03:46A message from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
04:01Welcome to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Bassan.
04:06Welcome, Trinidad, and Tobago, and of course, our viewers across the globe.
04:10It's Friday. It's the last day of the week, and I know a lot of people are breathing a sigh of relief.
04:15And of course, on Sunday, we're going to be celebrating Mother's Day,
04:20potentially the biggest commercial shopping experience people have outside of Christmas, they say,
04:28where a lot of sales are generated across the world.
04:32So we want to wish all those hardworking mothers out there, regardless of your profession,
04:38the best, all the best on Sunday.
04:40I know you will be pampered, you will be treated by your children.
04:44Of course, for those who have fathers that fulfill that role,
04:48we also want to extend those greetings to you.
04:51And today, of course, with me is the founder of the St. James Police Youth Club,
04:58Corporal Derek Shabody. Welcome to you, sir.
05:00How are you, and how are things?
05:01Fantastic Friday to you and yours, and to your listenership.
05:05You know, I'm glad that you mentioned the commercial component of Mother's Day.
05:11Our mothers are well-loved.
05:13Indeed.
05:13And the fact that, you know, you're seeing men and all different kinds making an effort to present a gift or two,
05:22a token of appreciation to the love of the mom, that speaks volume.
05:27I don't know what happens on Father's Day, but we will talk about that sometime in June.
05:30Yes, we will.
05:32But I, too, would like to, a little down, we will do a little more on the mothers,
05:36but I would like to wish every mother a happy Mother's Day,
05:40and I really trust that God continue to bless them,
05:43and because they play a pivotal role in this family life,
05:47and we just want to send blessings to them on that very special day.
05:51And Mother's Day should be every day.
05:53Of course.
05:53Every day we should celebrate our mother.
05:56But as you say, it's a special day looking at moments,
06:01a selling appreciation, and we too want to, as a member of the TTPS, the Commissioner of Police,
06:06we want to say happy Mother's Day to all our mothers, all around the world,
06:10and by extension, within the service.
06:12And of course, your mother as well, eh?
06:14Well, my mom died many months ago, and God rest her soul, she has been a good woman.
06:19She has been very good to me, and in fact, that's the first love of my life.
06:24You know, at the age of 14, my mom died.
06:26And when she died, it was five minutes after 15 hours.
06:30So we left the hospital, and on our way, we got a call saying that we need to return.
06:36And she had a last meet with us before she passed away.
06:41And, you know, I still remember my mom.
06:42I still remember the hard work that she do,
06:44the schools that she ain't up and down trying to make ends meet, you know.
06:49Her loud voice, Derek, where are you?
06:51You know, sometimes I go and play football.
06:54You know, the food and the smell of the food, you know, the hug.
06:58These are things you cherish.
06:59Well, certainly, you know, your mother would be very proud of you,
07:03what you're doing now, and what you've become with your life.
07:09And certainly, I also would like to extend greetings to my mother.
07:13She lives abroad.
07:14Of course, at some point, she will probably view the show.
07:17And like you, I recall, you know, the days that she would get up and cook food for me
07:21for school up to college days.
07:24And, of course, a very special mention to a mother in the Arima district, Debbie Rahman.
07:31Happy Mother's Day to you in advance as well.
07:34Apart from that, of course, we also have the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Sports Day tomorrow.
07:41A rather big day.
07:43And, of course, in preparation for that big day, they had some heats.
07:48And guess who was profiling one of the heats?
07:52We have the Commissioner of Police alongside several other competitors.
07:58Here's ACP Collis Hazel, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Social and Welfare Association.
08:04Gideon Dixon, Senior Superintendent of the Southwestern Division.
08:07My good friend, Colvin Thompson, and Sergeant Andrews and others.
08:12So, I think we need to catch that race.
08:15And let's see what happened in that race and who would have qualified for the finals tomorrow.
08:20Let's take a look.
08:25Yes, yes, yes!
08:28Good job, good job!
08:30Good job, chicken job!
08:31That's the Commissioner.
08:32Junior Bolt Benjamin.
08:34Oh, Junior Bolt, I tried.
08:35Junior Bolt Benjamin, yes.
08:36Unbelievable.
08:37Yes.
08:37Leaving in his wake, that's the Acting Commissioner of Police there.
08:41And Donning is all black outfit, it is black.
08:45He's first, followed by Sergeant Andrews on the podium there.
08:50And, of course, third, you have ASP Gideon Dixon there.
08:54They're all sharing a very proud moment.
08:58One, two, three.
09:00You know, Sidney, I didn't know, I didn't realize the Commissioner was that fast.
09:03Yeah, the Commissioner was speed.
09:05I'm going to say, does that even have photo finish?
09:07You know, he was way in front.
09:09And that speaks, you know, the type of atmosphere and environment that we want to create.
09:15You know, the Commissioner can take his time off and look back and tell you, you know, too slow, gentlemen, too slow.
09:22Well, I think the Commissioner can give some lessons when it comes to chasing bandits, those chain snatchers in Port of Spain.
09:30You know, beware, because I'm sure if the Acting Commissioner sees you in an act, I'm sure he can chase and catch you.
09:37Be one, be one.
09:38The Commissioner have speed.
09:40You'll get top of the uniform.
09:41Yes, indeed.
09:42I was, you know, so that's a very big event tomorrow, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Sports Day at the St. James Barracks.
09:52It's the 102nd anniversary of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Sports Day.
09:57There you go.
09:58Yes.
09:58Police Academy Grounds from 9 a.m., March past, children in the area, tug of war, children in the area, sorry, novelty events, club invitational events, youth club events.
10:10And I'm certain you are going to be there.
10:11Yes, I'll take part in the adult race, the adult race.
10:17I trust that I reach on time, you know, because I've won it so many times, I don't think I want to.
10:22Which race is this?
10:23Which race is this?
10:24The adult race.
10:25Oh, okay.
10:26The special race for you club.
10:27Do you have any evidence of you winning this race over a period of time?
10:31I'm just asking for the public, of course.
10:33Well, at this moment, no, but I will try to produce some later, John, during the course of the week.
10:36All right.
10:37Okay.
10:38Fair enough.
10:38Fair enough.
10:39I think the highlight of the Sports Day 2 is the magnificent drill, spectacular drill.
10:45People remain 530.
10:47I mean, the city atmosphere is there, the children and all that stuff, but when you wait and see the drill, it's excellent.
10:53So I want to invite, it's free of charge.
10:55The public is invited, it's an excellent atmosphere, and it's one way to put it, it's embracing members of the public.
11:01Yes.
11:02You know, and you all can come down and see me run a little after 4.30.
11:06I want to put you up against the acting commissioner.
11:08Hello.
11:09Acting commissioner, he's throwing out a challenge to you, a one-on-ones.
11:12I will be the person shooting off the gun.
11:16Well, boy, I don't know.
11:17I hope they have no cameras there.
11:19I think, I don't want you to pull up like people in that race who say, they pull up before the rigid line and say,
11:25I would have beat them if I didn't have this injury, yeah?
11:28It's a fellow like that.
11:29Yeah, reverse psychology, that's a good thing.
11:30You know that, huh?
11:31I pull a muscle.
11:32Yes.
11:33All right, we're going to take a look now at your headlines.
11:56So those are some of the headlines within the last 24 hours.
11:59And, of course, we had the unfortunate incident of a homicide early this morning.
12:03The number now, 135 for the year.
12:07In the San Juan area, you know, the person was stabbed to death, of course.
12:12Not a lot of information as to the motive surrounding this killing, but really sad.
12:18It looks like he might have been killed in another area, a work area of some sort.
12:22Yeah, and it continues to remind people that the fight, you know, at any level, whether it's at the community level, on the streets,
12:33these men and them are bracing out.
12:35You know, it's no longer night day coming for you.
12:38Broad daylight.
12:39And, therefore, say something, see something remains part of our mantra that we ask members of the public to be very tactful, to be very innovative.
12:47You know, you go about, even, I'm reporting these cases, but a life is a life.
12:53You know, I don't know the brother, I don't know the circumstances behind it, but that's a life.
12:57That's a father, probably an uncle, you know, and we have to see that as that.
13:01And we shouldn't become numb, but always saying, wow, and continue to put on a good fight to ensure that we reduce,
13:10at a management level, in terms of the crime situation in Trinidad.
13:13Yes, certainly.
13:15And we talk about brazenness, of course, and we talk about home invasions and robberies and so on.
13:21And this video we're about to share, we're not sure if it's local, but this is how a proprietor dealt with a suspect who came onto the compound.
13:31Take a look.
13:32So it seems that the suspect was intent and, well, the roles became reversed because I think he had some kind of intention towards the proprietor, allegedly,
13:54and he was advancing to him, and, of course, the proprietor used an unconventional way of ensuring that the suspect fled hastily.
14:08Yes.
14:09That should be on every 7 o'clock news.
14:10Excellent.
14:11Well done.
14:12Very innovative.
14:13Well, I'm not saying if it's local.
14:15Well, you know, I mean, they say we already go international and take all the different wrong things.
14:19So if we could go international and, you know, look at this proprietor and say, wow, you know, that was very innovative.
14:27And it tells you that people are taking it outside the box.
14:31You know, protection is paramount.
14:33He may not have a gun, he may not have a licensed firearm, but here it is.
14:37You know, he must be applauded.
14:39Yes.
14:39Must be applauded.
14:40Well, I hope that person learned the lesson.
14:43Of course, you know, it's very important that, you know, we safeguard ourselves,
14:46and we'll talk a lot more about that after this break.
14:49So stay with us.

16:07This concludes our weekly press briefing.
16:09As the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service continues to protect
16:15and serve with pride, we are calling on all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago
16:20to get on board with us to ensure that everyone is able to live
16:25in a crime-free society.
16:29Are you on board?
16:31This is my country, and I am on board.
16:36I am on board with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
16:40Let us save the youth of the nation.
16:42Get on board.
16:43Crime affects all of us.
16:45Children, communities, and the country as a whole.
16:48Supporting crime victims and working with the police service, I am on board.
16:54This is my country, and I am on board.
16:56My name is Nikolai Blackmon, and I am on board with the TTPS.
17:02Vision on Mission is proud to partner with the TTPS because crime prevention is everybody's business.
17:10We are the National Congress of Incorporated Spiritual Baptist Organizations of Trinidad and Tobago,
17:16and we are on board with the TTPS in its fight against crime.
17:19I am a farmer, this is my country, and I am on board.
17:24I am Charles Jason Gordon, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Port of Spain.
17:29I am on board in the TTPS fight against crime.
17:33We are all on board.
17:49Welcome back to Beyond the TTPS, my host, Mark Bassan,
17:54today with the founder and manager of the St. James Police Youth Club,
17:59Corporal Derek Shabody, and I know I think you had something to say before we continue.
18:04Brother Bassan, it would be remiss of me not to recognize us.
18:09Former Senior Superintendent Roger Alexander,
18:12who is now the Minister of Home Affairs, Homeland Security.
18:17Yes.
18:17Quote-unquote.
18:19Mr. Roger and myself, we go way back.
18:21In fact, he was very instrumental as a co-host on this program.
18:26He invited me to share some of my expertise in the area of youth,
18:31and I'm always grateful.
18:33You know, he called me and he said he would like me to come.
18:35So I just want to wish Mr. Alexander the very best.
18:40I used to salute him as a senior, so I have to salute him now as the Minister,
18:43so the salute him continues.
18:45Yes.
18:46But knowing the individual, I want to wish him the very best because his heart is in the right place.
18:52You know, he loves the police service.
18:53And it's good when you have law enforcement personnel, you know, involved in, at the highest level,
18:59Mr. Grenda Smith was there once upon a time, and then you had the Minister of Utilities.
19:09So that is good.
19:10And then you had also officials from the regiment, and when you see people like that grow and rise,
19:18it speaks volumes.
19:18So I just want to wish Mr. Alexander the very best, and I trust that, you know, it goes on from strength to strength.
19:25Yes.
19:25Yes.
19:26We wish him all the best here from beyond the tip as well.
19:29And on a very serious matter now, we spoke about home invasions.
19:35I have been speaking about this for quite a while.
19:38And, you know, there was an incident on May 3rd in the Faisabad district in the midst of the Bower Day celebrations
19:46where a 68-year-old woman and a 68-year-old husband was attacked by armed suspects, beaten, robbed,
19:57and the woman assaulted, $5,000 in cash taken, jewelry, approximately worth $44,000,
20:05a quantity of U.S. travel documents, et cetera.
20:09Now, in a press release sent out today by ACP Wayne Meister,
20:13they indicated that the suspects in that matter were caught yesterday,
20:20both very young male adults, ages 18, from the Palo Seco and the Faisabad area.
20:29And what, in their inquiries, they discovered Corporal Shabody was that,
20:34based on this intelligence-driven operation,
20:36they suspect that these gentlemen may be linked to a series of other violent home invasions,
20:43hence they understand there's a kind of ring that has been formed in the last couple of, I guess, months.
20:51And the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wayne Meister, for the South Central Region,
20:57indicated this was a cowardly act committed against vulnerable citizens.
21:03I want to ensure the public that we are treating this matter with the highest priority.
21:09We believe we have made a major breakthrough by disrupting an organized home invasion ring operating in southwest Trinidad,
21:19and we will dismantle their operations one cell at a time, according to ACP Meister.
21:25Yeah, and for those who know Mr. Meister, he's not too much into talking, he's into action.
21:32And we have to, again, congratulate and really appeal to members of the public for providing intelligence.
21:40Let me tell you something, 90% of the crime, especially home invasion and deals with invading communities,
21:47have to do with members of the public.
21:48People see something, and we must tell them thank you.
21:52We cannot go public with the name, we cannot go public with the information,
21:55and that is not smart, it's not intelligent, but we have to say thank you.
22:00Home invasion is not a good thing.
22:02That's why we continue to encourage neighborhood watch groups.
22:06We encourage the people to be alert, make sure your areas are well-led,
22:09you know, have some kind of alarm system, you have a WhatsApp group,
22:13you know, you have a special way that you can communicate.
22:15You can invite the inspector in charge of the invasion to come and set up.
22:20The Crime Stoppers do very good work in terms of coming and speaking and upgrading technology.
22:27So home invasion is not a nice thing.
22:29It's not nice.
22:29It's not nice to have your home invaded.
22:32It's one thing coming out of your vehicle, it's the next thing going in the grocery.
22:36But when you're home, you're a place where you're feeling safe.
22:39Yes.
22:40You know, you have to make this for another example.
22:41And I'm thankful that ACP and my son's team, and I like the word dismantle,
22:48make a statement that these fellows know are not here.
22:51It will not be allowed, it will not be encouraged,
22:53and we want to salute members of the public who continue to partner with the police service
22:58to ensure that home invasion is no more in every community.
23:02And while that might be so, of course, you know, what is very troubling about this Corporal Shabadi
23:07is that they're two young males, right?
23:10The question is, where are their parents?
23:13And secondly, I mean, even if, is this the best you can do if you want to get a job?
23:18At the age of 18, you have already committed a crime and you have been held
23:23and you're now going to be charged for various offences emanating from that human vision.
23:30I'm not a betting person, but because of my work with young people,
23:33like I tell you, there's an adult involved in that.
23:36Once you see young people involved in crime, there's adult, nurturing, procuring, eating on a betting.
23:41Then, you know, there's an arrangement, and as you said, it has to be dismantled.
23:46It has to start from the top.
23:47And this is what they're doing, you know.
23:49They recruit these young people, and then they pay them.
23:52They give them incentives in terms of how good you are, unfortunately.
23:57And therefore, the parents must be held accountable.
24:00You can't have 14 and 15-year-old being involved in home invasion.
24:03And when they go before the court, that's it.
24:05The magistrate must make the parents to answer in terms of what type of supervision the probation
24:12or the social worker must also visit the home to have a greater appreciation of what's going on in the home.
24:17That is unbecoming.
24:18It cannot be.
24:19I'm encouraged that you have minors involving serious offences like that, and, okay, they'll charge.
24:25We need to go further.
24:26Yeah, they're now 200 adults, you know, at the age of 18, legally.
24:29And it would be interesting, you know, to find out, you know, where they went wrong, you know.
24:35Was it a matter of circumstances?
24:37Their parents are not around, they're single parents.
24:39Or they just fell into the wrong crowd despite the best attempts of their parents.
24:44You know, it's sad that, yes, we call the perpetrators, but understanding, you know,
24:49from the social aspect, of course, and the psychological and mental impact it has on these young men
24:54now facing, you know, jail time.
24:57And, of course, you know, you're going to jail for the first time, even, if it's their first time.
25:02And you come out, you know, you mix in with all these other persons.
25:05And, you know, it's difficult then to come out and reform yourself, even though there are programs,
25:10a lot of people tend to repeat.
25:12And they're very young.
25:13Yeah, and, you know, I am not a prophet of doom, and that is not my business, because I will mean this.
25:17But there are, it is a case of sometimes, even when young people go into jail when they come out,
25:24they are more professional.
25:26They are more recruited, because of the people who were inside, would have noted them, you know,
25:31and allowed them to come back out, because they now have a stripe, they now have a rank.
25:35I make jail already.
25:35It is a backward, ignorant, stupid type of lifestyle that, to be negative, is to be seen.
25:42And we need to change that.
25:44And if you look at some of the unfortunate news that we carry with young people,
25:50sometimes we make the statement that, okay, look at the age of this young man.
25:55But there is a flip-sided where young people are crying out for help.
25:59And therefore, help is paramount.
26:02And it is important that even after they are incarcerated, that they are finding necessary help
26:07and they are finding necessary support.
26:09So when they come out, they become good citizens.
26:12And that should be the focus.
26:13What kind of help are we providing for young people who are lost, who are misguided,
26:18and who are crying out, you know, for that kind of love?
26:22Thanks a lot for that.
26:23All right, we're going to take a short break, and we'll be back.
26:25Stay with us.
26:29Stay with us.

28:17Mary has bills to pay and takes a chance parking in front of the building at the no parking sign.
28:25Mary returns to her car, and this is what happens.
28:29Mary decides to call when she's five minutes away to let her daughter know that she is close by.
28:42But Mary forgot one thing.
28:45But Mary forgot one thing.
28:45Second ticket for the day.
28:48I don't know now.
28:49I really don't know.
28:50Well, I tell you.
28:51After two tickets, Mary just isn't paying attention to her speed.
28:56Don't be like Mary.
29:13Obey the laws of the road.
29:16A message from the TTPS.
29:26Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
29:32I'm your host, Mark Gossan, joined today by founder and manager of the St. James Youth Club,
29:38Corporal Derek Shabody.
29:40And we're going to quickly go to one of our segments,
29:43Voice of the People in the Northeastern Settlement.
29:45Let's take a look.
29:46I've been living up here since 1998.
30:11Life was really enjoyable.
30:13You could feel really comfortable in the area.
30:16Take a lot of lima, you know, enjoy yourself and things.
30:18But now with, you don't feel comfortable anymore.
30:21Well, I have to watch myself.
30:23Because I am, I know crime thing, but, you know,
30:28Just, just prevention better than cure.
30:31You know, while going from work to come,
30:34You have to be watching your surroundings and things.
30:36Because, you know, you know, I don't know what to be expected
30:38In any crime situation like that.
30:41What measures do you take to protect yourself from becoming a victim of crime,
30:46And by extension, your family?
30:47One major mistake, one major mistake for sure, is my own business.
30:53I don't, I, and, um, make sure that my family is safe at home,
30:57And make sure all doors close at a certain time, in the night time.
31:00Don't matter with nobody, because, you know how it is going.
31:03So, you have to be on your guards now, you know.
31:07Do you, do you believe or think your community is actively trying to prevent crime within your area?
31:13Yes, they're trying to prevent crime right now,
31:15Because, it doesn't make any sense.
31:17The people in the area have heard about the, the crime,
31:20How, how, how it, how it high right now,
31:21And the, the, the deaths and, whatever, what, whatsoever.
31:25So, they're trying the best to, to make the crime, the crime, go down now.
31:30Are you satisfied with the level of engagement of police in this area,
31:35In terms of patrols, walkabouts, engagements with, with, with the community,
31:42And the people that live here?
31:43Well, so far, um, uh, I, I, I should say I have fun now,
31:47Because they should do more work in the area,
31:49To, to decrease the rate of the crime in this area.
31:53You know, but, so far they've been doing a good job,
31:56But, it, it, it should be more active.
31:59Especially in the night time.
32:01Right.
32:01So, what would you like to see,
32:03Happen in your community, to turn things around generally?
32:07Well, to turn things generally in this area,
32:10They should, we'll do more, um,
32:12Police community,
32:14Talking, you know, um,
32:16Going house to house.
32:18Like one, they should, um,
32:20They should keep more, like, more surveillance around the area.
32:23Like two, they should keep, they should, the, the, the, um,
32:27The, the government should come and do more talking in the area,
32:31And trying to find how many youths were going on,
32:33You know, them kind of thing now.
32:34You know, so, try their best to,
32:36Come, communicate with the people in the area.
32:39What are your thoughts on stiffer penalties
32:41For, for people that commit certain crimes,
32:44And should it be harsher to deter individuals from a life of crime?
32:49I find they should bring back, um,
32:51Uh, like you say, like,
32:53They should, um,
32:54Be, be more harsh.
32:56Like, for instance, like, um,
32:58If they find out a, a, a fire or some kind of thing,
33:02And you know that it's a criminal,
33:04Deal them to suit.
33:05Don't let them come outside and,
33:07Get them, be them kind of thing.
33:08Because it's just like, you know, you can never see a spoiler on them.
33:11And some kind of continue doing the same thing over and over.
33:14And some.
33:19Voice of the people, comments?
33:21That cry is, is understood.
33:23It's a cry where, where people say,
33:25Listen, let me mind my business.
33:27You know, and it's understood.
33:28And this is why the, the, the, the vision of heads
33:31Has a responsibility of going into the communities.
33:34When, that's why we have town meetings,
33:35To really educate and to keep people informed,
33:38Community policing, knocking on doors.
33:40The gentleman said it.
33:41He said the more, the police interact and the more police.
33:44This thing about gun men locking on communities,
33:47We're not locked that.
33:48No gun man, right, locking on the community.
33:50You follow?
33:51Having people in the fair, they jump in,
33:52They don't know what to do.
33:54It, it, it is not a good state of mind.
33:56And we want to ensure people,
33:58That you have a responsibility to invite the police,
34:00Invite the original head.
34:02You know, set up, if it's just outside the yard,
34:05At the community center,
34:06Where you'll be able to give,
34:08Provide with tips and be familiar with,
34:10With who is now in charge.
34:11I'm the inspector,
34:13I'm the officers on the ground working.
34:15It is your responsibility.
34:15We are to serve the community.
34:17As incumbent on the community,
34:18To access that service.
34:21It's one of the many services,
34:23That the police service provide.
34:24So I want to applaud the gentleman.
34:26It's a statement.
34:27It's something that we hear often.
34:29But then we say, then what?
34:30And we encourage them, you know,
34:32To be a part of the solution.
34:33And it comes naturally, eventually.
34:36When people see good things going on,
34:38Basketball, football,
34:39The city committee sort of flourish.
34:41And they say, ah,
34:42This is a step in the right direction.
34:44And no gunman, no gang,
34:47Should have any committee under lock.
34:49That is madness.
34:52Yes, certainly.
34:52And you talk about safety.
34:54And, of course,
34:54We did indicate to you about the home invasions.
34:58And the arrest of two young individuals.
35:01And, of course,
35:02For those who are out there
35:04And have concerns about home invasions,
35:06ACP Meister outlined several tips.
35:10You know, safety tips.
35:11For those of you, you know,
35:13When you're going to your homes.
35:14And when you arrive.
35:15And what you should do.
35:16And a couple of them,
35:17He says,
35:18Secure all entry points.
35:19Use dead bowls,
35:20Metal bars,
35:21And reinforce doors and windows.
35:23Install motion sensor lights
35:26And CCTV
35:27Around your property.
35:29Don't overlook the back and side entrances.
35:31They are often where
35:33They're used by the intruders.
35:36Avoid sharing travel plans
35:37Or valuables on social media.
35:41Join a former neighborhood
35:42Watch group community.
35:44Vigilance is key.
35:46Install a personal safety
35:47Or panic alarm app.
35:49Link to the TTPS
35:50Or trusted emergency contact.
35:52And lastly,
35:54Report any suspicious persons
35:56Or vehicles in your area
35:58Immediately by calling 999
35:59Or your local police station.
36:02So just some tips.
36:03Because we know home invasions
36:04Is of a significant concern
36:06Over the last year or two.
36:08And I know that the government
36:10The new government
36:11Has already indicated
36:12Their intentions
36:13To handle that problem
36:14Going forward.
36:16Yeah, I know that
36:17There has to do
36:17With some amendments
36:18To the laws
36:19And redefining
36:20Home invasion.
36:21It's too vague.
36:22And you know,
36:23It's a step in the right direction
36:24Because people need to know
36:25That once you enter
36:26A man's property
36:27A man's home
36:28These are the stiff penalties.
36:31These are the consequences.
36:32And it must be applauded.
36:33And I want to applaud
36:34ACP Meister
36:36So we're not only
36:37Looking at the question
36:39Of the role of the police
36:40But you're also
36:41Empowering members
36:42Of the committee
36:42For them to understand
36:43What is my role
36:45In terms of home invasion?
36:46Or what do I do?
36:48And those tips
36:48Are absolutely excellent tips
36:49It should be
36:50You know,
36:51In every household
36:52It should be on every phone
36:52Every group chat
36:54So that people
36:55Remind themselves
36:56Over and over
36:56Those are very important tips
36:58Technology is paramount
37:00If we are to address
37:01The question
37:02Hopefully the TTPS
37:03Will, you know
37:03We can get these tips up
37:05At the TTPS
37:05Will, we can put them up
37:06Hopefully next week
37:08Certainly, certainly
37:08So that at least
37:09Everybody will be

40:32Welcome back to
40:46Beyond the Tape
40:46I'm your host Mark Bassan
40:47Joined today by
40:48Corporal Derek Chabody
40:49Manager and founder
40:50Of the St. James
40:51Police Youth Club
40:52We go directly
40:53To the phone lines
40:54Caller good evening
40:56Good evening
40:58Mr. Bassan
40:59Good evening sir
41:00I'm calling to give you
41:03A job
41:03Okay
41:06I would like you
41:09To investigate
41:10Why
41:13Police Commissioner
41:16Or the police
41:19Executive
41:20Are not making
41:23An attempt
41:24To pay
41:27Retired officers
41:29Their back pay
41:31I have called
41:33A couple weeks ago
41:34Commissioner of police
41:35Is very disrespectful
41:36I'm going to say that
41:38No one in the executive
41:41Is coming on your program
41:43To state
41:44What is the problem
41:46It's 20 months now
41:49And no definitive
41:52Act on it
41:53When you call the office
41:55A set of fancy talk
41:57As usual
42:00So I want you
42:01With your
42:02Investigative skills
42:04Investigate
42:06Why
42:08And the
42:09Retired
42:09Officers
42:10Being paid
42:11Why
42:12The commissioner
42:12Have a word
42:14Use regular
42:15Assyriously
42:16But if that is
42:18Assyrious
42:18After 20 months
42:19Well I would
42:20I wouldn't want
42:21To see something
42:21That is not
42:22Assyrious
42:22And maybe
42:24Just maybe
42:25We may need to
42:28Retired officers
42:29May need to
42:29Go at the police
42:30Administration
42:32Building
42:33With placards
42:34So placard
42:35The commissioner
42:36Of police
42:36It is getting
42:37Very disturbing
42:38And the commissioner
42:39Is a Christian man
42:40He is not showing
42:43Any sympathy
42:44For retired officers
42:46Thank you
42:47Very
42:47Very much
42:48Kola
42:49Thanks for your
42:50Comments
42:51Well
42:53You are doing
42:54Inquiries
42:55As I cry
42:57And I trust
42:58That the commissioner
42:58Is listening
42:59And
43:00It is unfortunate
43:02But there is a platform
43:03Where you can
43:04Either write
43:04You can seek
43:05An audience
43:06With the commissioner
43:07And as the gentleman
43:08Said probably
43:08They can get themselves
43:09Into a group
43:10And have an audience
43:11I know the commissioner
43:12Has an open door policy
43:14And I understand
43:15You retire
43:17And you are waiting
43:18And you are waiting
43:18And you are looking
43:20For this
43:21What
43:22Is Julie yours
43:24Yes
43:24I agree
43:26I really trust
43:26That you use
43:28Your good office
43:28To share
43:30And I know
43:30That the commissioner
43:30Looks at the program
43:31So
43:32I trust
43:34That this particular matter
43:35Will be addressed
43:36And expedited
43:37So people
43:38Know after
43:39They have given
43:39Of their service
43:40To the police service
43:42That we too
43:43Will be of service
43:43To them
43:44And I agree with you
43:46I think it's very important
43:47And I had a conversation
43:48With another retired officer
43:50About three or four weeks ago
43:52And he says
43:53You know
43:53I'm waiting
43:54But I've been
43:55Forced to dip
43:56Into my savings
43:57And it's difficult
43:58So I know
43:59They are sitting
44:00You know
44:00You know
44:01Protocols must be observed
44:03Red tape
44:04And so on
44:04But
44:05Cole
44:06I hear your call
44:07I hear your cry
44:08Sorry
44:08And I obviously
44:09Will try to make
44:10Some kind of inquiries
44:11As to what
44:13Might be the key back
44:14I know we just had
44:15A change in administration
44:16In the government
44:18So
44:18I don't know
44:19They will have to
44:20Certain things
44:20Have to be done
44:21Before
44:21We can
44:22Probably address that
44:23As well
44:23But I'm not making
44:25That an excuse
44:25But I will definitely
44:26Try to find out
44:27More
44:27Next week
44:29For you
44:29And perhaps
44:30Give an update
44:31Or get something
44:32Ventilated in the public
44:33For
44:34All right
44:35So
44:36Unfortunately
44:37We had the drowning
44:38Of
44:38The young
44:4014 year old boy
44:41Samir
44:42Ragbear
44:44In Mayara
44:45A couple days ago
44:46And
44:47You know
44:48His mother spoke
44:49To
44:50The express
44:51Reporter
44:52Suzanne
44:52Mohamed
44:53And
44:53She had a
44:53A message
44:54For parents
44:54Let's take a listen
44:55I was daring
44:59He said
45:01Tell him not to do
45:01Something
45:01He's still
45:02Go and do it
45:02Tell him that morning
45:05I told him not to go
45:06He want to go
45:06So
45:07He going
45:07I don't know
45:10What to say
45:10My son was
45:12Amazing
45:13He was
45:15Amazing
45:16He
45:16Had nothing
45:18He asked
45:19Somebody to know
45:19He would not do it
45:20For him
45:20I was six
45:21And still
45:22Somebody do
45:22Everything
45:23For me
45:23Every single
45:24Thing
45:24Straight down
45:26Until Monday
45:27Morning
45:27He asked
45:29To go
45:29I told him
45:29No
45:29I stay
45:30In home
45:30Choosing
45:30From work
45:31We can stay
45:32Together
45:32But it was
45:33A sister
45:33But there
45:33He wanted
45:34To go
45:34We did
45:35Had a little
45:36Curl
45:36And online
45:37We did
45:37Had a little
45:37Curl
45:38I said
45:39You know
45:39What do
45:39We want
45:40And he
45:40Did
45:40Go on
45:41He called
45:42At half
45:42Two
45:42I was
45:43In work
45:44We didn't
45:44Answer
45:45Answer
45:45Phone
45:45In work

53:01Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Bassan, joined today by Corporal Derek Shabody,
53:09manager and founder of the St. James Police Youth Club.
53:12And we talked about safety in the seas and, of course, there's also safety on the roadways.
53:17And, you know, we've seen these accidents popping up quite often now,
53:22earlier today along the southbound lane after the presale flyover.
53:26Now, the Children's Hospital, you know, there was this accident here.
53:34You know, two vehicles involved, of course.
53:37And we are hopeful that those and those vehicles, that the persons in those vehicles, sorry,
53:44escaped without any major injuries.
53:48The SUV looked a bit more banged up than the other vehicle.
53:53And that is the number one concern, you know, if you had any children there, you know, was life saved,
53:59what was the level of injuries, you know, some people, the type of tires they're using.
54:04Yeah.
54:04You know, they care for the tire, the driving, and if you see the driving, there's no distance to maneuver,
54:11no distance to, you know, in case there is an unfortunate, you know, driving situation in front,
54:18you're unable to take a turn because you're driving so close to the next driver that there's no sufficient space.
54:25And that's why we have to introduce something called defensive driving.
54:29And defensive driving, both virtually, where people can see on TV what is a safe space between a car and how many cars in front.
54:38And we need to continue to educate people.
54:40And some people feel new roads means more speed.
54:44You know, they have more road now, so more speed.
54:47And they have to be reminded that they're sharing the road with other persons and other like persons.
54:53And it's our souls that we need to make sure that people reach one place to the next.
54:58It is an education, but also people need to be held accountable for their recklessness.
55:02People just are discourteous.
55:04Sometimes you give away for a vehicle and you pop in.
55:09You have vehicles sometimes and you're allowing somebody cross because you're already in a vehicle
55:13and people are too happy about that.
55:15So you can know there are some discourteous people on the road and we see that over and over.
55:20And therefore, they must be made to pay and also understand.
55:24This is not the culture.
55:25It's not an environment that is conducive for driving and it's not helpful.
55:29Yes, and as we go into the weekend, we want to remind everybody, please exercise safety on the road.
55:35We as motorists and pedestrians alike, those who are trying to cross the highway rather than use the flyovers.
55:41And of course, please do not drink and drive.
55:45And we know we could talk about the scrapping up the merit points, but there's a conversation for another day, of course.
55:53But all these things are taken into consideration and into plea.
55:56But I know we just have a couple of minutes left, so I know you want to just touch on two things quickly.
56:01Yes, certainly I want to commend ACP Sudin and the team, Inspector Pierre, Corporal Glasgow, Secretary Valentine.
56:10They are the ones who are putting the gallery spots.
56:12Excellent team.
56:13I'm sure there will be much more.
56:14Yes.
56:15But then we're going wrong.
56:15I also want to ask and appeal to those who are listening.
56:20If you want to wish a mother happy Mother's Day, I think it is equally important that you find a mother who is in need.
56:27A mother who has nothing to eat.
56:29How can I come and wish you a happy Mother's Day and there's nothing on the table?
56:32Find a mother who is in need.
56:33Find a mother that you can go to a home and provide.
56:36And that, it speaks, it has more value when you tell that person happy Mother's Day.
56:42Some people go and they flash where they went and, you know, they'd be thankful.
56:47But when you could find a home with a mother who certainly would offer a smile on her face and say,
56:55this is for you, happy Mother's Day, God bless you, and that is the Christian thing to do.
57:00And for all serving Catholics, I want to congratulate you on selecting your new Pope.
57:06Understand, he's an American.
57:09That speaks for the first time ever.
57:12But we want to wish, I want to congratulate all Christians and all Catholics on the selection of the new Pope.
57:17All right, and on that note as well, we want to wish all the mothers across Trinidad and Tobago a happy Mother's Day.
57:27And we are hopeful that, as Papa probably said, those mothers that are in need, reach out and give a helping hand to those mothers.
57:36You know, that will be even a light up their face with a smile, you know, giving rather than getting in this instance.
57:44Remember, repeat tonight at 11.30, no rerun tomorrow.
57:49Have a safe weekend.
