03:04Welcome to Beyond the Tape, I'm your host Mark Basant.
03:17Of course it's Monday and we certainly have a lot to speak about over the weekend.
03:23One of the major headlines of course was the kidnapping of Suresh Ram Narain who was taken
03:30by allegedly fake police officers on Saturday night while sitting in a bar.
03:37Obviously the footage that has been on social media as well as on the television shows officers
03:45in tactical gear, all dressed in blue of course, walking into the premises with firearms, claiming
03:55that they are police officers escorting Mr. Ram Narain off the premises into a waiting
04:02SUV and of course his Prado was also taken which police discovered sometime yesterday
04:13and it was reminiscent of course of that case involving Sashel Kunjibihari who unfortunately
04:21was murdered after he was picked up by two police officers in a marked police vehicle
04:27on September 25th and of course we know how that ended.
04:32His body was found on October 4th and later on police officers Akhten Corporal Ashraf
04:40Mohammed and the Constable Jason Dan Michael were later charged with his murder.
04:47Also we had some sad news over the weekend, another woman attacked and killed Laura Sanka
04:56at a new grant home by a relative and what we can tell you based on information we got
05:03this afternoon that the Deputy DPP Jaglal in South has given orders to charge a particular
05:11male individual in that killing.
05:15Of course he has not been charged yet so we cannot reveal his identity nor his relation
05:21to Mrs. Sanka and then we, today of course we have Captain Valence Rambarat with us from
05:29the Hunter's Search and Rescue Team and of course we had that incident on Friday I do
05:36believe with a 12-year-old, thank God he's alive and back safe.
05:41Welcome.
05:42Sir, it's a pleasure, good evening to each and every one of you, those who locked on
05:46to TV6 and 11 News.
05:48We also had an action-packed week from when we left off on Monday but I think the issue
05:55of missing persons continues to be in the news.
05:59We've had some good news and some bad news, I think we will discuss this further but if
06:04we come back to what happened on Friday at about 5.22am I got the distress call from
06:11a relative stating that the young man was abducted and he was nowhere in sight.
06:25They were still trying to piece together what happened with his mother, Anna Ellis, and
06:31I said to her, listen, we will drop what we're doing and we will come up because I don't
06:35think, on Tuesday we had a sad incident down in Pinal, Barrackport to be exact, where we
06:43lost a one-year-old child and I don't think this nation could have taken on another child.
06:50And her mother of course, Tara Ransom.
06:54But I'm specifying the children because in this case it was a child being abducted and
07:00I did not think that the nation could have stomached that so we had to get up and get
07:05out there and join the militia.
07:10Now the 12-year-old boy, thankfully he found his way home but what was the terrain like
07:16because I know that area is usually very hilly, it's forested and so on and you all would
07:21have gone in there, of course there were several hours that would have elapsed until he found
07:26his way to his grandfather's home late in the night.
07:29If you can, for the viewers, walk us through what was the terrain like for you all and
07:35how difficult it was to search in that particular area.
07:39Well the thing is, we were contacted by the police to come immediately as well and we
07:45attended the briefing, however at the briefing it was determined that it was too risky for
07:52us to join the police officers and the defence force in that exercise.
07:57But from where we were placed, we had a good vantage view of the terrain, it's very steep,
08:06the vegetation is harsh, you're talking about lots of coconut trees and palm trees and rivers
08:13and steep terrain and what they did was they sought our advice as hunters to see, to share
08:23with them where we thought the gentleman would have taken the boy.
08:26We did so and I think eventually we were on point in terms of where to search and what
08:33to look for and where to look for him.
08:35But all in all I think we have to praise the efforts of the police in responding quickly
08:42because I am told that by 5.20 they were at the home and that's a good response time.
08:52The gentleman did come to the home at 5.10 when the alarm was raised and then I think
09:00the police responded quickly.
09:02But we were there and we were always willing to share our information and our skills with
09:07the police and defence force officers.
09:10I spent a long time speaking with them and indicating to them where they should search,
09:16which again was precise.
09:19Well done, of course you all never dull moment of course and just bringing us up to speed
09:25on what's your involvement with the present case involving Suresh Ramnira and how have
09:33you all been assisting the police in that realm?
09:36Well we did receive a distress call from the family, in fact two close members of the family
09:44but with respect to kidnapping for ransom because there is a life at stake we do not
09:52really speak about our involvement in these cases.
09:58Again our partners in the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service remain the anti-kidnapping
10:04unit and there exists a platform to share information and that is active as we speak
10:13and so we have been mum thus far on our involvement or anything we do with respect to cases like these.
10:23Well I know that just before the issue I spoke with a very senior officer in Central Division
10:28and he would have indicated that they have certain things that they are looking into
10:31and working on and they are very optimistic that it will yield some kind of result hopefully
10:37as we say with the rescue of him alive of course and brought back to his family members
10:43we can only hope that that will play out and we'll be monitoring that of course and I also
10:49want to just touch on you know this spate of killings that happened in the Dago-Martin
10:55area between Friday and Sunday of concern of course and we will hear of course later
11:02from the senior superintendent of that division about these upsurge in killings in that particular
11:09area but for now we'll go to our headlines.
11:39So
11:54when I called her phone after
11:56um the husband answer I said where Laura and he said that how was she dead
12:05Some of the headlines of course a lot of crimes and one of the things of course we were talking
12:23about earlier is the kidnapping of Suresh Ram Narain from a police station in Dago-Martin
12:32and the kidnapping of Suresh Ram Narain from a bar in Kunupia on Saturday night and I mean
12:41you're looking here Mr. Ambarat at a SUV with strobe lights police strobe lights pulling up
12:49and officers or alleged officers or fake police officers sorry with what appears to be you know
12:56police uniforms you know coming in walking into the premises quite calmly all armed of course
13:03this is just one angle of that CCC TV footage you know they're walking in calmly and a couple
13:10seconds will elapse of course and here is Mr. Ram Narain sitting there on his phone of course
13:17and then you would see the officer points to him or the person sorry who is posing to be an officer
13:24speaking to him of course and saying hey will police come with us he doesn't resist of course
13:31he has his phone with him and I imagine this is something quite worrying to the to the TTPS of
13:37course and I know you would be talking to a lot of people too about the access to police uniforms
13:42that these criminals now have. Yeah Mark I think Trinidad and Tobago was shocked when it was
13:50discovered that two police officers were involved in the Sashel Kunj Bihari case and and I think
13:58that really speaks to the distrust of the police service with respect to how the public how they
14:05engage with the public. I am a supporter of the Trinidad and Tobago police service and that one
14:11rocked me it shocked me and shocked members of my team to the extent that they were asking me
14:17who should we trust and nevertheless I just want to go back to the Kunj Bihari case a little bit
14:25because if you look at 2024 so far I think there have been six or eight reports of kidnapping for
14:31ransom or all those were resolved with the exception of Sashel Kunj Bihari so I think
14:40something out of the ordinary happened for him not to come out of the the kidnapping alive given
14:47the fact that a ransom was paid for his release and somebody didn't keep their end of the bargain
14:53and so you had asked me about this one was what I think what you were mentioning that central
15:01police is saying that they aren't the things and things will work out. I am extremely hopeful as
15:06well I am hoping it doesn't go the way of Kunj Bihari but it follows the norm. For the year thus
15:12far we had some kidnappings for ransom Anisha Budu, Otorama Aranguez, we had Anisha Hussein
15:23and source doubles, we had Parusuram, Shivam Parusuram from central Trinidad they were all
15:34released and you know in the Anisha Hussein's case the police waited they waited they ensured
15:43that she was safely released and the next day they were able to allegedly shoot four suspects
15:51to the kidnapping. In addition to that you have over the last five years you have had
15:5816 reports of kidnapping for ransom and then you had I believe 21 persons being arrested so
16:07we've we've seen some improvement that's why I say the anti-kidnapping unit is not a unit you play
16:12with. They're a specialized unit they know what they're about and I'm sure on this on this
16:21Subish Ramnaranski's case they aren't it and they will they will be successful and I'm
16:27very very hopeful for his mother's sake sister and brother's sake that and he has a young baby
16:34that these things will work out well I'm very very hopeful. Well we certainly hope that
16:41Ramdas and his team at the AKU and others who are assisting in central will obviously
16:47retain Mr Ramnarayan safely. So we're going to take a short break and we'll be back after this

19:14Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Marc Bessant, of course, joined today by Captain
19:19Valence Rambarat from the Hunter's Search and Rescue Team. And we want to go quickly to
19:27an incident that occurred in Newgrant on Saturday of last year.
19:35We just want to listen a little bit to what her sister had to say about her sister's passing and
19:42what she had to say about her brother's passing.
19:49So, Captain Valence Rambarat from the Hunter's Search and Rescue Team from Newgrant,
19:56what her sister had to say about her sister's passing and what was the call that she received
20:06from the alleged suspect in that matter? Yesterday I received a call that
20:16that she, if anybody called me and tell me what was going on, what happened, I said no.
20:25So, then I called her phone and when I called her phone after,
20:32the husband answered. I said, where's Laura? And he said that how is she dead? I said that he fell
20:41up. And when I left, I come in from Chaguanas, I come up here immediately.
20:49When I come up here, well, my son, whatever, I think was here already.
20:54So, I wasn't allowed to view the body inside in the bathroom area.
21:03What I heard is that he was drinking. They had an argument. She was sitting in her working shed
21:13here outside. He was getting dressed to go somewhere. So, she went inside. And when she
21:20went inside, he came behind her with the cutlass. And they chopped her to death. They all come on
21:31law for at least 18 years or so. In the beginning, everything has been nice, you know.
21:40And everybody does have a problem. But I don't mean to say if you stress out, tell yourself.
21:53If you were stressed out and fed up, not my sister. She did not have anything to do with you.
21:58I had other instances where he would have done other things.
22:04Some years back, he drank poison. All the time, he had an altercation with my brother where he hit him with a hammer.
22:16But all the time, when I came up here, they had a fight. And she probably grabbed some knife or
22:27something and grabbed. So, she got cut on her hand and whatever. She had a little blood on her cheek.
22:35And this is where it reached to now. Has she ever reported any of these incidents to the police?
22:41Not to my knowledge.
22:45We obviously want to thank our ex-best photojournalist, Dexter Philip, for that interview there.
22:50I sit in a very sad situation. And I do recall hearing Dr. Varma Dyal saying today
22:57on the Express newspaper, saying that women need to kind of see these signs when you're with a
23:05male person. And of course, you know, I do believe we have a lot of vociferous women's
23:13groups out there. But nobody has really come forward and really spoken out, I guess, over the
23:17last week about what has been happening, these attacks on women. And we are hopeful that we'll
23:24be hearing from them in the very near future. Of course, this is a serious situation, as we know,
23:30domestic violence. And we have been speaking about it time and time again here on this program.
23:38And we are hopeful that the suspect in that matter will be charged and appear before a magistrate
23:46for that offence. So, let me just come in on this. And this week gone, we celebrated Mental Health Day
23:552024. And I think we've got to look at our men and the issue of depression. Randall Fields,
24:04the president of the Single Fathers Association, sent me a breakdown of the suicides for 2024.
24:11And I was really alarmed. I can't pick it up on my phone right now. But the number of men
24:18who have committed suicide has been on the increase and the numbers are startling. So,
24:23and I think we've got to look at men, the issue of alcohol, and how they fit into relationship
24:29with women. Yes, of course. And as I said, mental health, as you pointed out, is extremely important.
24:35And that kind of, you know, making sure that you're being your brother's keeper, as the case
24:41may be, when people are really facing some tough times, we have to kind of speak to them. We don't
24:48know what's going through people's minds. We have to be good role models too, both mark yourself
24:52and I, so that when we speak to people, you know, they follow the way we think, talk,
24:59and our habits and behaviours, which are positive. Most definitely, most definitely. I know we are
25:05hopeful that in the future, you know, a lot more people will listen and seek advice from people
25:12and seek help. Yeah. We want to talk about a little bit about some of the missing persons.
25:17Of course, Captain, you would be, you know, I think it's 24 people were missing for up to October
25:25today, the 14th, but 22 has been accounted for. 20, 20, 20. Yeah. So I think you would probably
25:34want to walk us through some of these. Yeah, sure. And before I do that, Mark, you would have attended
25:39one of our family days, Deep in the Forest. So you know how important family is to this team.
25:44And last Wednesday, one of our teammates, Christopher Shigobin, he got married in a very
25:50simple ceremony to Annette, and I want to take this opportunity to wish Christopher and Annette
25:57all the best. We are a family of families. We celebrate births, deaths, marriages, everything
26:03together. Yeah, so October has been running a little above the national average. The average
26:11we've been working with for the last three years is about 1.5 missing, persons missing per day in
26:18Trinidad and Tobago in October has been running at about 1.7. And so we had 24 thus far for October
26:27and 20 accounted for. The four persons not accounted for so far would have been Edward Farrell.
26:36He's from the Guapo area and Guapo. It has had this last week into this week. We had four missing
26:43persons. The only one who not accounted thus far for is Edward Farrell. We still have Aaliyah
26:51Frazer outstanding. We have Suvish Ramnarine outstanding. And the last one we have, the last
27:01person we have outstanding would be Dominic Duveson. I'm not sure if you remember this story.
27:07He's the Coast Guard guy whose vehicle has been packed up at Stowers Bay for going into four
27:12weeks now and we can't seem to locate him. But some effort has been made in this regard by our
27:18team and hopefully we should make some, we should get on top of it by time I get back here next
27:27Monday. For October, for September we had, we were able to account for three persons. This girl,
27:36Deja, Emily, Peter. We were absolutely worried about her. So to her mother and father. She
27:45was missing for a month and two days. With one month ago we reposted her and thankfully a member
27:54of the public came forward. They were able to supply information to us. That information was
28:01relayed to the Arima police and she was safely located. We were so happy, the entire team, I
28:08think the entire country was happy that we found Deja. Because remember the last program continued
28:13to tell the nation that yes we are accounting for the teens but the day will come when we can't
28:19account for one and Deja was giving us some real, real, real heartache. We had Chinna Singh, a
28:28carryover from September. She was located as well as Ariana Chavol who the Princess Town Police
28:37again stepped in to assist us in locating her. We had a carryover from August. We were now able to
28:45account for Jubril, Jubril Charles. We spent an entire day in Arima. This guy does not have a
28:56criminal record. He was found murdered in Karapu. He sold vegetables, probably had a bit of his
29:07mental health would have been a bit compromised but an extremely nice guy from talking to the
29:13witnesses in Arima and it's so unfortunate that he was found murdered. From last Monday when we
29:23left off, you know remember I told you I was going to the vigil. I was diverted by the Marabella
29:28Police Station. We were looking for Anthony Phillip who was reported missing, Alzheimer's
29:35patient from Guapo and we were diverted to Marabella and I just threw off my jacket,
29:42kept on my shirt and pants and we hit the streets in Marabella with the Marabella Police there and
29:50we searched into the night. We were back on the scene early morning and I think we have some
29:57videos to show the reward for our efforts.
30:03We say thank you so much to the Hunter Search and Rescue Team for bringing my husband home,
30:08Anthony Phillip. I want to say thank you for the Marabella Police Station. I wanted to thank you
30:13for Point and Guapo who has been calling consistently to find out if there was any
30:18change. I want to say thank you for my Facebook family who shared the message and the pictures
30:24and everything. I want to thank everybody for their kind support in this time of my need and I
30:30wanted to just say I am so happy that he is home and thank God for everything and everybody that
30:37assisted to make this day a productive one. Thank you. So some really good news there,
30:43feel good news there for that family and we are happy that Mr. Phillip is back with his
30:48family and on that note, we're going to be taking a short break and we'll be back. Stay with us.

33:06Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Mark Besson of course joined today by Captain
33:16Valence Rambarat from the Hunter Search and Rescue Team and we want to talk about something that's
33:22been happening in the last couple of days. Very serious of course. At least four people have been
33:27murdered in the Diggle Martin area from Friday to Sunday and I was able to speak with the senior
33:36superintendent of that division earlier today. I asked him about some of the happenings and
33:42what they were trying to do to kind of curb it. So we just want to listen to Senior Superintendent
33:46Sean Henry. Over the past three days there have been four murders in the western division
33:55more specifically in the west end police district. According to our information the first murder is
34:01suspected to be drug related. The following two murders that were committed are suspected
34:10to both be gun related. The third is also suspected to be gun related but unrelated to any of the
34:17others. Even before these murders we have been focusing on certain areas in the west end police
34:25district. Since the murders we have increased our direct exercises targeting certain
34:31individuals and locations that we suspect to be connected to several of the murders and these
34:37exercises will continue so as to reassure the public that we are in control. It should be noted
34:45that for the year thus far notwithstanding these recent murders we have been able to seize and
34:52remove 50 firearms from the streets of the western division. They include pistols and
35:01high-powered assault rifles. The community in the western division can rest assured that my officers
35:11or our officers are committed to this fight and reducing the amount of guns on the street
35:20and shootings in the division. We hope by our commitment that we will be able to enhance the
35:29trust and confidence that the public has in the western division and by extension
35:37the Triantafego police service. We are committed, we are fighting and we are in control.
35:44So there you have it, Senior Superintendent Sean Henry speaking about the recent speed of
35:50killings in the Digger Martin area and certainly up to last night there was a incident, a shooting
35:58incident I should say, where this video of course from a CCC TV footage in the Digger Martin area,
36:07I believe it's Melissa Street. We just want to take a look here.
36:10Somebody, it seems these guys are, their faces are covered, armed with firearms, somebody's running
36:16down the street of course and another man is shooting at that group of men there. My understanding
36:23is that a 17 year old boy was shot in that melee or that exchange of gunfire, quite bruised of course
36:31on the street and I think the Senior Superintendent spoke about ridding the streets of firearms,
36:38you know, you have automatic weapons, you have handguns and so on and they were able to so far
36:45retrieve 50 firearms in the western division and I know it's people always criticize the police at
36:52times but I think it's a very good thing that they're able to do that. I think it's a very good
36:58to police at times but certainly they're trying in the western division, according to Senior
37:05Superintendent Henry to of course stem that flow of shootings and killings that is happening,
37:13that has been happening sorry in the last couple of days there. So there you have it,
37:18so we, we wanna, Oh we do have a call on the line. Caller, good afternoon.
37:22Good afternoon.
37:26Good afternoon caller.
37:26Hi, good evening. Okay, so there was a missing person, his name is Oriel Gomez. He went missing last year, so I'm not sure if there's any clarification or closure that the gentleman from the, you know, on the search and rescue, if he did anything, you know, that.
37:52We can't give info in regards to that. That's one point. And my next point, it is apparent that there's a case where folks from Trinidad are going into Tobago to hide out.
38:09And they basically are not hiding out because whoever needs to find them is finding them. So, Tobago needs to be, you know, Tobago needs to be sorted out in that regard.
38:25But my main point is Oriel Gomez. I'm not sure if he has any new info. If not, no problem, I'll listen. But he has been missing for a year now. And the search and rescue team has been, you know, looking for him a lot.
38:47So, I'm just calling to see if there was, you know, any closure, if possible, in that regard.
38:55Kola, can you say exactly where Mr. Gomez went missing, the last location, at least the job?
39:02You know, I would remember, and I'll tell you why I would remember Oriel's dad is a hunter. And when a hunter's child is involved, we make an extra effort.
39:12Oriel Gomez was from Mon La Croix in Blanchiches. And he came down to Arima, supposedly to meet a girl on her first date. And this would have been the first time they were meeting. And the meeting point was in Arima.
39:29They were spotted at River Ranch the night. And that was the last known sighting of Oriel Gomez. Now, the anti-kidnapping unit was working on several theories with respect to Oriel's disappearance.
39:46And I'm thankful that Kola called, because sometimes we spend three, four days on a case. We've not made any headway. We search certain areas. And we will always rely on the anti-kidnapping unit to provide us with further guidance.
40:04So, Kola, I know the anti-kidnapping unit is busy right now on this particular case, but I will remember to give them a call to see what new information has come in for Oriel Gomez. But that's a hunter's son. We took that, we really went out of our way to help him.
40:25Kola, I certainly hope that Mr. Ambright has answered your question thus far. So, we've got to take a short break, but we'll be back after this. Stay with us.
