00:00 A hot shell hero isn't hiding anymore.
00:03 Here's a look at the NECATOYS Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Last Ronin Unarmed Version.
00:08 [intro]
00:15 Who is the last Ronin?
00:40 In a future battle ravaged New York City, a lone surviving turtle embarks on a seemingly
00:44 hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost.
00:48 From legendary TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird comes the final story of the
00:52 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, three decades in the making.
00:55 What terrible events destroyed his family and left New York City a crumbling post-apocalyptic
01:00 nightmare?
01:01 All will be revealed in this climactic turtle's tale that sees longtime friends becoming enemies
01:06 and new allies emerging in the most unexpected places.
01:09 Can the surviving turtle triumph?
01:12 Now before we get this review underway for the last Ronin Unarmored version, I'd like
01:16 to first thank the folks over at NECATOYS that did provide this sample that we're about
01:19 to have a look at.
01:20 I'll also bring in the other earlier look at Ronin for comparison's sake, but first
01:23 let's grab the old tape measure as we always do to see how tall the figure stands.
01:27 With this head in place, this version of Ronin stands six and a half inches in height, or
01:31 the figure's going to be about 16 and a half centimeters tall.
01:36 And as promised, we're going to slide over the unarmored version of Ronin and bring in
01:40 the earlier Ronin that we've already had a look at here on this channel.
01:43 I'll tell you right off the bat, I actually like this version of Ronin a little bit more.
01:48 Just seems a little more personality going for him.
01:51 But I do appreciate the fact that in this case NECATOYS did give us in fact two versions
01:55 of Ronin that we could put on the shelf.
01:58 As for accessories, once again Ronin does pretty good for himself with the amount of
02:01 stuff that NECA packs along with the figure.
02:04 Next let's have a look at Splinter's Journal.
02:06 And while it's not a book that I can actually open up, I like the way it's been sculpted
02:10 and bound nicely in burgundy with a back spine of course here in gold.
02:16 Again it doesn't open up, you can open up and reveal the pages inside, but I do appreciate
02:19 the fact they took the time to include Splinter's Journal to go along with the journey here
02:24 for The Last Turtle.
02:26 Even though I did give it away at the other review I did of Ronin, I'm not going to tell
02:29 anybody who The Last Ronin is, although I'm sure many of you will mention it down below
02:32 in the comments section.
02:33 It's not the turtle if you haven't read it that you would expect.
02:36 I'm going to put that to the side, everybody's going to say it down below in the comments
02:39 section, please don't.
02:41 Okay the comic's been around for a while.
02:43 The other thing that the figure also comes included with as well, and I'm not a big fan
02:46 of these, the figure comes with these throwing knives and you get four of them which is fine
02:51 and good and they do have the means to attach into at least one of the hands that I can
02:55 see.
02:56 With the defaulted hand, or I think this may have been one of the hands I swapped out to
02:59 close the face, you can see or maybe see that there's a little slot here to the top that
03:03 you can then take one of the throwing knives and plug it in place.
03:07 You're not so much plugging in place, you're basically just forcing it into that slot and
03:11 he does have the means to hold it, but I would almost just say I would have enjoyed rather
03:16 if they included a hand that already had the knife built in.
03:18 So just because these are the things that I'm most likely to lose.
03:21 I mean, let's face facts, there's four of these.
03:23 They're tiny, they're small, they're silver so at least they'll stand out if you drop
03:26 them on a dark carpet, but still I'm sure you're going to be losing these.
03:30 I would have rather if they could have found a way to actually put little slots in between
03:34 the fingers so he could have actually looked like he was holding a couple of knives that
03:37 way instead.
03:38 We're going to slide those out of the way because I know I'm going to lose them.
03:42 Take that out of his hand.
03:44 While we're certainly on the topic of hands, the figure also comes included with a series
03:47 of interchangeable ones.
03:49 Now he does have again just closed fists for right now, but you can easily then swap them
03:52 out with gripping hands for holding again the broken sword, for holding the scythe,
03:56 for holding the nunchuck.
03:58 Choose which weapon you'd like to wield with Ronan's hands.
04:00 Again, he comes with gripping hands for that.
04:02 The figure also comes with a pair of, well again, meditation hands or relaxed hands.
04:07 Again, nicely sculpted in the case in both.
04:10 And the figure also comes included with this hand as well, which actually at the beginning
04:12 of the review for a segue then into the scythe, I ended up having the scythe resting against
04:18 this.
04:19 And you know, I got to say like it works well for the scythe to hold it with this hand here
04:22 if that's an option you wanted to go with.
04:23 I guess while we're certainly on the topic of that, the figure also comes included with
04:26 the scythe.
04:27 Only one scythe.
04:28 In fact, he actually only just has one weapon from each of the respected turtles.
04:32 And in Raph's case, he only has one single scythe.
04:36 There's compartment space, at least on the Ronan, that you can store these away if you
04:39 don't decide to put them into his hands.
04:40 But that aside, the figure also comes included with a broken katana.
04:43 Unfortunately, broken on the end, not sharp at least to the touch and I can draw blood.
04:48 It's nicely painted, at least what's left of the blade in silver.
04:50 I got a little bit of silver here around the gold area of the guard, but other than that,
04:55 it's okay.
04:56 The hilt itself nicely handled here in brown and a gold on the end of the hilt matches
04:59 that of the guard.
05:00 It's a nice looking sword, what's left of it at least.
05:03 The figure also comes included with nunchuck or a single nunchuck connected at least by
05:07 the two with a chain in the middle, a real chain.
05:09 I'm glad to see they did that.
05:11 Again, nicely colored here in the dark, more chestnut brown.
05:14 Got some more gunmetal kind of gray at the top there.
05:16 And again, a real chain connecting the two together.
05:19 Nice touch.
05:20 The figure also comes included with a metal futuristic tomfa.
05:24 Not really the tomfas that we're used to seeing, but again, the original Ronin that we also
05:28 had a look at, I think also came included with the same tomfa.
05:33 One nice touch as a reference to the comic, the figure also comes included with a mauser.
05:38 Different of a mauser of course than we're used to seeing and it doesn't have any posability
05:41 or roll to it.
05:42 I thought for example, like the head may have rotated, but not the case.
05:46 Even while it's nicely painted, you can see on the side, it does say, was that M112 panel
05:50 lined well.
05:51 It's got a little bit of color there also in the sides.
05:53 It's a nice looking mauser.
05:54 I just wish something could have moved on it.
05:57 It's just a staction piece.
05:59 The figure then finally comes included.
06:01 Oh, I guess one thing we can do before we get down to the head sculpt, because I want
06:04 to talk a little bit about that.
06:06 There are compartment spaces located around the belt area of the Ronin.
06:10 So again, like depending on where you want to put it, I like to put the sword, the broken
06:13 sword at least holstered from the front.
06:15 Then there's a large enough section here to the back to store the nunchuck.
06:19 So you can put that also in the back.
06:20 And then there's also a section here to of course store the sai.
06:23 The only place that really isn't having a storage place is the tomfa.
06:26 They're really, I mean, I guess you could try to fit it in here, but it's too, it's
06:30 too big almost to hold the nunchuck, but it's too small to hold the tomfa.
06:34 So you sort of have to display it in the figure's hands.
06:37 Let's just remove these for right now, because I want, I want these to get in the way of
06:40 things.
06:41 The last thing we'll talk about obviously is the alternate head sculpt.
06:44 And it isn't so much an alternate head sculpt, it's sort of the head sculpt that we started
06:47 things with.
06:48 If you first take, took the figure out of this plastic prison, it's more of a closed
06:52 somber looking face with just a very, a very unexpression face.
06:57 In fact, he actually kind of looks like he's in meditation or just really sad.
07:00 Instead, I decided to swap it out with the more aggressive one, one at least that would
07:07 show at least the teeth area of the Ronin.
07:10 But again, it's the difference between the two.
07:11 The one thing also with this head sculpt is it does have the part of the bandana actually
07:15 sticks up.
07:16 Whereas this one actually does have the more relaxed.
07:18 Unfortunately, though, here's the problem I had with the figure.
07:22 When you are removing the head, for example, you remove it first from the ball joint, obviously,
07:27 but I do want to draw your attention to the ball joint itself, that they used a very large
07:31 joystick ball joint.
07:32 I feel in a case like this, they probably should have used just a stem socket, like
07:36 just like one of those little posts, as that would have been a lot easier to remove it.
07:40 You can already see ended up what ended up happening here.
07:42 Even though I did end up heating this when I initially changed the head out on this one,
07:47 what ended up happening though was when I went to change the head back, unfortunately,
07:51 the socket gave way and this ball joint then popped out of the neck.
07:55 Now I'm going to have to probably now heat this up both in this area.
07:59 Well, maybe I may not heat the socket of the neck, but I'll try to heat it again, the head
08:02 and hope that that's enough to free the peg because now the dumbbell ball joint, which
08:06 again, we've got a ball joint in this side of ball joint on this side, it's just now
08:10 won't come.
08:11 I can't remove the head without essentially removing the joint from the neck.
08:16 And again, just to pop this back into place, you kind of have to rest this against this.
08:19 I really wish honestly that they had not used a ball joint this big again, because it's
08:24 just so much hassle.
08:25 It seems to pop this back into place.
08:27 Again, you can heat this with hot water, but I didn't think once I had this in place, the
08:32 problem was going to be with the one that attaches to the neck.
08:34 There we go.
08:35 Pop that back into place.
08:36 Now, I mean, while this may be the head I end up settling with, I actually do like this
08:40 one is the better of the two.
08:41 I just wish it was a lot easier to remove the heads.
08:43 And I do wish that they've used a post instead of a large ball joint.
08:46 I don't think a ball joint needed to be that big to change the heads up for Ronin.
08:50 Again, this is what you would have normally started with.
08:52 And again, for nicely detailed, it is a really good looking head sculpt.
08:56 Gives it a little more of an aged turtle here with the wrinkles here on the side and the
08:59 wrinkles on the bottom.
09:00 And again, then there's this option, but I'm going to have to heat this head again so I
09:04 can actually get rid of, well, remove it from the post.
09:07 Looking at the rest of the figure's body, once again, we'll bring back in the original
09:10 Ronin so you can see.
09:11 Well, this one would have worn the robe and again, like all the detail and done to this,
09:15 this one sort of does away with all of it, at least from the waist up.
09:18 The waist down is pretty consistent.
09:20 So you'll see it.
09:21 It looks like they probably would have used the same mold for at least the belt side down.
09:25 You've got what left, what is left behind of the jacket.
09:28 But I guess this isn't so much a jacket because then of course you would have had to remove
09:31 the top half of it.
09:33 And you can see in this case, they would have had to tool a brand new body with some really
09:36 cool looking details done to it.
09:37 I like the darker color that they would have used.
09:39 Admittingly though, the area here of his torso isn't quite the same color that they use for
09:44 the arms.
09:45 I don't know if you can actually maybe tell this or not, but it looks like the head and
09:48 the arms are one shade lighter than the color that he has for his torso.
09:52 Still it's nicely detailed.
09:53 You can see the more darker color of gold that they've used for the front of the shell
09:57 and well also that they've sculpted the back of the shell in a really dark, rich color
10:01 of chestnut.
10:02 They've got the darker color airbrushed in there as well.
10:04 It does really make for a super detailed looking shell, something that you don't really get
10:08 the chance to see if you have the original Ronin only.
10:12 For the figure's articulation, it's going to be exactly the same as the one that we
10:14 looked at before.
10:15 Looking again at the head sculpt, which once again is unfortunately stuck to the ball joint
10:19 I've attached it now onto.
10:21 Head does look up, it looks down.
10:22 You can also rock it back and forth and of course you can rotate all the way around.
10:26 As for the shoulders, again the shoulders do rotate.
10:29 They seem to be on hinge joints but yet the joints don't really allow me to move it any
10:33 further past it seems like this point here.
10:35 So about 45 degrees.
10:38 The figure does also have a double hinge on the elbow which is nice to see.
10:41 The hands rotate also all the way around.
10:43 That's also nice to see.
10:44 And the figure has an upper torso ball joint, which I think also as well when we looked
10:48 at the original Ronin, the original Ronin also had the same thing working for him other
10:51 than again he just would have had the jacket over top of it.
10:55 As for the figure's legs, because again these are softer plastic, at least the skirting
10:59 that he has allows at least the legs a little bit more clearance, a little more leeway.
11:03 So you can move the legs forward, you can move them back and out.
11:06 He has a swivel at the top of the thigh.
11:07 The figure possesses a single hinge only on the knee.
11:11 The lower leg does not rotate but at least the feet rotate all the way around as you
11:15 can see some nice detailing with the sandals that he's wearing.
11:18 Hinging up and down on the feet, he also does have an ankle rocker and he does have pegs
11:22 on the undersides of his sandals.
11:24 All in all, not a bad looking Ronin.
11:25 I'm a little unfortunately bummed out by the fact that they had to use such a large ball
11:28 joint.
11:29 Why did they have to use such a large ball joint?
11:30 I think easily you could accomplish the same goal by just using a single, those more narrow
11:35 posts that they seem to be using a lot with their neck of figure releases.
11:38 I don't know why they couldn't have just done the exact same.
11:40 Like what's the rule of thumb as to why they have to use a post over a ball joint?
11:44 Is it because the figure's body is bigger?
11:46 I don't know.
11:47 Either way though, I think it would have been a lot easier from a standpoint of changing
11:51 out the heads, waving my hands in front of the camera, that they would have just used
11:54 a post rather than a ball joint.
11:56 I have successfully changed out the heads, but now I'm going to have a harder time to
12:00 put the head back in place.
12:02 Though I do like this one.
12:03 I think this is my favorite of the two.
12:05 Of the two figures though, I still prefer I think Armored Ronin because he just has
12:09 a lot more detailing done to him, but I like the idea that at least NECA did give us options.
12:14 Two ways of displaying the last turtle for his last hurrah on the shelf in our collection
12:18 space.
12:19 As always is the case when it comes to these Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles releases from
12:22 the folks over at NECA Toys, I think you get a lot of bang for your buck.
12:25 I mean, you look at the size of this turtle, the last turtle, and you look at the amount
12:28 of detail and articulation that they managed to pack into such a large framed turtle.
12:34 Not to mention once again, all the accessories that they pack along with him for the journey.
12:38 You get all the souvenirs left behind of the turtle fallen brothers, like the nunchuck
12:41 beside, the broken katana, and a tomfa.
12:45 The tomfa is the only thing that really unfortunately doesn't fit anywhere on the turtle.
12:48 You can't store away all the weapons of the turtles except for the tomfa.
12:52 But I think when it comes to displaying him, I may have even displayed it also with the
12:55 armored version, the tomfa is going to find its way into the grip of this version also
12:59 as well.
13:00 The thing that I don't like necessarily is the fact that they included these tiny little
13:04 bladed knives.
13:06 Throwing knives for all intents and purposes, but there really isn't a place to properly
13:09 store it on the turtle's hands.
13:11 And I think I would have much rather if they just included a hand that already has the
13:14 knives built into the fingers, not only built in between the thumb and the pointer finger,
13:19 but I think they also could have added slots in between the fingers and just put those
13:22 knives automatically in there.
13:23 Because I know without that, these things are going to go right back into the tray.
13:26 Because I know if I don't and I leave them out, they're going to go missing the next
13:30 time I come back to the studio table here.
13:33 The other thing of course I also would have mentioned, as mentioned already in this review,
13:36 is changing out the heads.
13:38 I think when it comes to any turtle release or any NECA release across the board, if they
13:42 ever have a figure that has an interchangeable head sculpt where the head is included with
13:45 the figure, I think right away do away with the idea of using the ball joint, those larger
13:50 ball joints, and instead rather just use the cylinder posts.
13:53 The cylinder posts give you just as much postability, I feel at least, and it's a lot easier when
13:57 it comes to any collector trying to change the head sculpts out.
14:01 I managed to change the head out at least to the more angry or more expression face
14:05 that we have here in Final Looks, but now trying to get that head back into place, because
14:10 every single time I remove the head, it ends up popping the ball joint out, not from the
14:13 head, but actually the neck cavity, where I didn't think that that was going to be an
14:17 issue at all.
14:18 I'm going to still try to heat this up, see if I have a better success to do it.
14:22 At the end of the day, I'm only ultimately going to be displaying the figure with this
14:25 head sculpt anyways, I might just leave it.
14:28 What do you guys think of the unarmored version of Ronin?
14:30 And if given the choice between this one and the armored version that we looked at before,
14:34 which do you think is a better looking Ronin?
14:37 Let me know down below in the comments section.
14:39 Also as well, I'd like to thank the folks over at NECA toys that did provide this sample
14:41 of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the last Ronin unarmored version, that we could have
14:45 a look at in this review.
14:46 If you guys enjoyed the video, you just finished watching, why not hit it like?
14:49 If you guys are enjoying the content you guys are seeing and certainly on board to see more
14:52 TMNT from NECA toys, make sure you hit that subscribe button down below and you're also
14:56 turning on the bell notification.
14:57 Definitely going to be a lot more videos coming your way guys, so as always, thanks
15:00 for watching.
