AI agents are now helping run the search for alien signals. 👽📡
On October 30, 2026, NVIDIA said in a blog post that Breakthrough Listen and the SETI Institute have brought agentic AI into the daily search for extraterrestrial intelligence at the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California.
What NVIDIA says the system does:
• From a single natural-language request, AI agents can steer the telescope's antennas, calibrate and focus the instrument, catch and fix data errors and plot the results.
• NVIDIA's Holoscan platform pulls sensor data straight into GPU memory, so observations are processed as they happen instead of filling hard drives.
• According to NVIDIA, the system can handle 2.4 terabits per second on NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs, with inference running on site, next to the instrument.
• The pipeline achieved what NVIDIA calls the first real-time AI detection of a pulsar, in the Crab Nebula. No alien signal has been reported.
• The team is also evaluating open models, including NVIDIA Nemotron, for observatories that may one day run offline.
Andrew Siemion of the SETI Institute, principal investigator of Breakthrough Listen, said what these agentic observatories find may have more in common with them than with the humans who built them, and called it "a breakthrough in translation" (quoted by NVIDIA).
