00:00It's already been a success for the Guardians, not the Browns.
00:05The Browns have only played five games.
00:06The Browns it has been because we don't even care about the outcome of the games.
00:10Oh my God.
00:10Yeah, we're still doing seven and a half tomorrow.
00:12I'm not going to sit here and, no, I'm not going to fake it.
00:18You guys want me to fake it, find somebody else to fake it.
00:20They'll fake it for you.
00:22Or, the worst thing is, is that they'll tell the truth when it comes to some of those takes.
00:28Here's the thing.
00:29I'm not going to sit here and fake it for everybody.
00:31I don't think you're faking it, but my concern is that this is going to pent up
00:37and you're going to be more mad about this game at a later juncture in the season
00:42and it's going to make for the explosion even better.
00:45When you are eventually mad.
00:48So be it.
00:49So be it.
00:50I'm not upset that you're not mad.
00:53I'm more so worried on your behalf.
00:55I think it would be asinine of me to come in here with screaming and yelling and mad
01:02and red-faced and angry and sweaty over a loss.
01:07It was not a good loss.
01:08It was a bad loss.
01:10It was a bad loss.
01:11You could have been four and one.
01:12Okay.
01:13You could have been a lot of things.
01:14And the only thing that stood in your way from then was a bad Jets team.
01:18Yeah, and the only thing that stood in the way of a bad Jets team with you is that you're
01:22also not that great.
01:23And you made mistakes that cost you a football game.
01:26It was complete team loss.
01:28Like some people took the Deshaun Watson conversation.
01:30Some people try to take that as if I put it on Watson.
01:33No, absolutely not.
01:35He's part of the loss, but he's not the reason they lost.
01:37He just didn't help.
01:39And I think what you have is you went from a quarterback that was a net negative.
01:44See, this is the whole Watson conversation that people are getting mixed up here.
01:48And damn it, I wanted to talk about the Guardians.
01:50But let me just say this.
01:51They're good.
01:51I like them.
01:52This is what's lost in the whole Watson conversation.
01:55When he was on the field before, he was a net negative.
01:57He cost you chances to win football games.
02:01He cost you chances to put yourself in a position to win football games.
02:05He's not anymore.
02:06He is not a net negative.
02:07He's just not such a positive that he's going to be able to overcome the problems that you have.
02:12But it's still an improvement.
02:14And in this league, with so few good quarterbacks and so many bad quarterbacks, I will take that this year.
02:23He just isn't good enough to overcome the mistakes that you make, like the usual fare, like he was in
02:312020.
02:32Even then they were a four-win team.
02:33But he's just not good enough to overcome those mistakes.
02:36At least he's not good enough again yet.
02:38And I don't think that he's going back to that level of quarterbacking that he was in Houston.
02:43And anybody who's making those things either doesn't know what they're watching, is too much of a fanboy for him,
02:49or is holding him to such an absurd standard that they're not being realistic anymore.
02:55Padone's in for Lima.
02:56My standard for him this year was to be a vet quarterback that could help me develop some of these
03:01pups.
03:01And to give Watson credit, he is doing that.
03:04But what I start getting freaked out by is when I'm going into a fourth quarter against a bad Jets
03:10team and a Jets defense that wasn't playing well under Aaron Glenn prior to yesterday.
03:15How did Harold Fannin Jr. and Denzel Boston combine for four total targets?
03:21Harold didn't catch his first ball until that fourth quarter.
03:24He's going to throw to the open guy.
03:25You know, that's the shield that he's going to hide behind.
03:27When you don't have Casey Concepcion out there, it does make things a little easier.
03:31If you didn't have Denzel Boston out there, it would make things easier for the secondary that you're playing against.
03:36So now you go from Casey Concepcion and Denzel Boston, who can open up things underneath for Harold Fannin, to
03:42now you lose one of those guys.
03:43The other guy you don't need to take seriously because he can't hold on to anything.
03:47And then it makes it easier to bracket up on Harold Fannin Jr.
03:50Plus, you don't have much of a run game.
03:52So if you don't have much of a run game and they don't respect your run game, you're still going
03:55to get loaded up guys,
03:56but you're also going to be able to cover those guys better.
03:59It's still a lot that he would have to do to get you over that hump defensively or over that
04:05hump offensively.
04:06And it's just not realistic right now.
04:09But he wasn't the reason they lost.
04:10He's not a horrible quarterback anymore.
04:12I'm not trying to put it all on him.
04:14What I'm saying was I walked out of yesterday kind of with the reminder that, yeah, they still need one.
04:19They still need their long-term answer at the position.
04:22It's not going to be him.
04:24But I think a lot of people felt that way.
04:25I agree with you.
04:26I just don't know that it's even going to be him six weeks from now.
04:30Because when it starts getting cold, if you still can't run the ball and he's not going to be able
04:34to play well in the cold,
04:35how is this thing going to look?
04:36Listen, I'm open-minded to anything here.
04:38And I know it sounds like, well, Ken doesn't care about anything.
04:40No, I care about a lot of things.
04:41And I do care that they lost the football game.
04:43I'm not nearly as mad as I would be had the Guardians not won on Saturday.
04:48The Guardians won on Saturday.
04:49I'm sorry.
04:50I got a team going to the ALCS.
04:52That's the beauty of being a fan of all three teams here.
04:54Is that, yeah, my emotions do get covered up a little bit by the baseball team doing so well
04:59that I'm not going to be as mad at the football team.
05:02Just not.
05:03All right?
05:04Now, if the Guardians go out there and get swept, I may react a little bit different.
05:07I don't think they will.
05:08I think they're going to do well.
05:10So I might react a little bit different to the Baltimore game.
05:13But, you know, Baltimore is a team that you are not expected to beat by a lot of folks.
05:18It's explainable.
05:19But I still look at this as explainable.
05:22They didn't go out there and walk around.
05:25They didn't go out there and play so poorly.
05:28Yeah, they let the wind get away.
05:29But I'm not, I'm just not going to fake my emotions for anybody.
05:34And it wasn't going to happen at 6 and it ain't going to happen at 8.52.
05:37It's just when you spend all week talking about this not being a trap game, it's because you feel like
05:43you're the better team.
05:44And it feels like the Browns felt like they needed to go out there and beat the Jets because they're
05:48just a more talented football team at this juncture
05:51than a rebuilding Jets team that has three first-round picks in next year's draft.
05:55But the Jets know what it is.
05:56But we have two.
05:57Like, we have to understand this.
05:58Like, we are not that much better.
05:59Like, we lost a game we should have won.
06:01But we are not that much better to where it is unbelievable that you lose to a bad football team.
06:08You're still not that great.
06:10I'm still keeping the playoff conversation open.
06:12I think it would be ridiculous to have it one week and not do it again.
06:15I'm still going to keep it open.
06:16But ultimately, you're still not that much better than they are.
06:192-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
06:22No matter what happens from here, I still think that this has been a successful year for the Cleveland Guardians.
06:29After what they did on Saturday, they've made it to the ALCS.
06:33Do I consider this season a success?
06:36Yes.
06:37I want to know whether or not you agree with that coming up in 5 on the...
06:40I think the clock kind of hit midnight a little bit just because we had these, you know, fun runs.
06:46This really fun run of three straight game-winning drives.
06:49He gets the ball back with 90 seconds to go.
06:52I'm thinking, here we go again.
06:53Right?
06:54Four straight.
06:55But it felt like the magic kind of ran out there on that last drive.
06:59And I get it.
06:59You had no timeouts.
07:01It was pouring rain.
07:03Your offensive line was dreadful.
07:05Isaiah Bond couldn't catch a football all day.
07:07So I don't really understand why he was on the field and why he even go to him in that
07:10position.
07:10Well, this is the weird conversation we're having about Watson.
07:12All those things you just said are true.
07:14There are people who are like...
07:17The uberly defensive Watson people have come out of the woodwork here.
07:21Oh, yeah.
07:21And you won three in a row.
07:23They're going right...
07:24And they're going right at me.
07:25Well, I'm trying to go down the line here.
07:27Because, like, we had the caller in Cincinnati.
07:29I'm going, all you're giving me is excuses why he wasn't good.
07:32You're not giving me reasons why he was.
07:34And there's...
07:35Guys, there's a tremendous difference.
07:37I don't think that Watson is in the upper echelon of quarterbacks.
07:40I don't think that Watson is...
07:41I think he's probably somewhere in the meaty middle right now.
07:44I don't think that he's...
07:45But when you say the Magic runs out, like, you don't have...
07:48So if he gets the ball back with 90 seconds against the Ravens at home next week,
07:53you don't have any faith that he can lead him down the field?
07:54Because I still do.
07:55It's not that I don't have any faith, but my faith has certainly been shaken.
08:00Because I feel like...
08:01Over one game?
08:02I say this, that the Magic won three in a row.
08:04No, it's not the one game.
08:06It's not basically that way.
08:07It's that you lose that game when you had an opportunity to win it the same way that you had
08:11won the three before.
08:12Yeah, but he wasn't the reason they lost.
08:14He was part of the team reason that they lost.
08:17So I don't understand the reasoning here.
08:18Because I said coming into this game, the one thing that has alluded to Sean Watson is this complete game,
08:24right?
08:24He has put together a bunch of really fun fourth quarters and a bunch of really fun moments within these
08:29games.
08:29But he's yet to show, like, a complete performance.
08:32And yesterday was exactly that.
08:34Where it wasn't a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination, but he did enough to have them in
08:39position to make the end of the game pretty interesting.
08:42Where he had a chance to win the game.
08:43I still think he had them.
08:45Well, that's the whole point of it.
08:45I don't think that he would have been the reason they would have won.
08:49But I still think he did the baseline job of any quarterback.
08:52And for those reasons, he still has the other comebacks that would not stop me from thinking that he couldn't
08:59come back next Sunday against the Ravens.
09:02I said the magic ran out because I look at it like this.
09:05He's played five games.
09:06He's got seven touchdowns.
09:08He's only thrown two interceptions.
09:10Guys, he's fumbled the football six times in five games.
09:14That's a lot.
09:15That is a ton.
09:16But when you also have to have design runs with your quarterback, it is a bit explainable because your running
09:21game isn't that good.
09:22And your running back isn't as good as what we hoped he was going to be.
09:25And PFF is giving him seven turnover-worthy plays right now.
09:29So you've got as many turnover-worthy plays as you do touchdowns.
09:33Turnover-worthy versus actual turnovers are different things.
09:36I think if we sit there and we do turnover-worthy plays, we'll never get any sleep at night.
09:41Every quarterback, every single quarterback has got to put his team in a position where you might turn the ball
09:48over
09:48because you have to be able to be willing to make tough throws.
09:53And tough throws, by its definition, means that they could be picked off.
09:57So the turnover-worthy stuff doesn't hold much water for you.
10:00I just can't keep banking on this guy to pull a rabbit out of a hat in the last drive
10:05of a game
10:05because his first three quarters are oftentimes pitiful.
10:09The fact that he couldn't get the ball to Boston or Fannin until that fourth quarter
10:17was why you were hoping that he could have another heroic last drive.
10:22He's not that great in the rain.
10:23Now, he was good in the whole—I thought the entire second half against Tampa Bay,
10:26and maybe they'd have to go back and look.
10:27What was the second win that they had in a row?
10:30Against Carolina.
10:31Against Carolina.
10:32The home opener, which was a pretty bad game until the fourth quarter for him.
10:36It was until the fourth quarter.
10:38He was good in the first half against Pittsburgh.
10:39I thought the first—because he—I thought he had three really good quarters against Pittsburgh.
10:45I did.
10:46So I think he put his team in a—and there was a fumble in there in the fourth quarter
10:50that he still had, and I still thought he was solid.
10:52So I think his closest game to a complete game was against the Steelers.
10:56But, like, what he is, he's somewhere in the middle.
11:00And right now, I'll take somewhere in the middle because I don't think that they were in a position
11:03to lose because of him, solely because of him.
11:06He was not the net negative that he's been in the past.
11:08I still think—and, you know, Daryl said he had to go back and watch Y'all 22.
11:12I already went back and watched Y'all 22 myself.
11:14And I know—like, I'm not ripping on Daryl here.
11:16Daryl will give his own opinion later again.
11:18But he wanted to know whether or not Deshaun Watson was running himself into sacks.
11:22I didn't think he was running himself into sacks.
11:24No, especially in those last two drives.
11:27They were sending four most of the time.
11:29And he was getting sacked, but it wasn't because of him.
11:32And it was because you had linemen standing there looking at each other while the defenders ran around.
11:37The right side of the offensive line, I do wonder if they're going to make some changes this week.
11:41I only said that the magic ran out because when he had the football in his hands
11:44with an opportunity to do what he did for the previous three weeks, he was unable to do it.
11:49And I do have this distant fear, and maybe this is me just being a jaded Clevelander
11:53and a lifelong Browns fan, that there's another shoe that can drop on this Deshaun Watson thing.
12:00And then the bottom of the bag lights loose.
12:01Then let the shoe drop.
12:02I'm not going with the—so what do you want to do with the guy?
12:04You want to replace him?
12:05It kind of did drop.
12:06They're 3-2.
12:07How could the other shoe drop?
12:08In the fourth quarter yesterday when he had the football with an opportunity for a game-winning drive,
12:13he fumbled it away.
12:14But, Nick, you're saying the other shoe drop, like, that to me, to me,
12:19that sounds like the entire season's a loss with him, which is insane.
12:23You're 3-2.
12:24You're saying that the magic is gone.
12:26How has the magic gone?
12:28You're not going to win every single one of those comeback bids.
12:30And, again, he wasn't the reason that they lost the game.
12:33So if he wasn't the sole reason that they lost the game, which he wasn't,
12:36how on earth can I sit there with a straight face and tell everybody that I've lost faith in him
12:42to be able—if they get the ball back with 90 seconds and no timeouts left,
12:46they've got to go down the field.
12:47I feel the same way I did.
12:49Because I did.
12:49I had hope that he would be able to put it down the field and go down there and score.
12:53I did.
12:53It was the Jets.
12:54Maybe I'd feel differently because—a little bit differently because the Ravens are a better football team,
12:58even though the defense has struggled here and there for the Baltimore Ravens.
13:01But I don't lose all faith just based on the Jets game on the road.
13:04I don't.
13:05He's got more fumbles than games played right now.
13:09And, again, that's an exceeding amount.
13:12That needs to be addressed.
13:13And I addressed it with you on the reasonings why.
13:162-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
13:18Gregory in Bedford, you're next up on the fan.
13:20Hello, Gregory.
13:22How you doing, guys?
13:23I have a problem with Nick.
13:26Okay.
13:26Before the season started, he said he wasn't going to watch the Browns if Watson starts.
13:32Never said that.
13:32What did you say, Nick?
13:33Never said that.
13:34Gregory, find the audio.
13:37Gregory, find the audio.
13:39Hey, Gregory, find the audio and send it to me at Nick Padone 12 on X.
13:44I will gladly acknowledge it if you could find that audio because it does not exist.
13:49I thought you said there was no reason to watch if he could.
13:50Correct.
13:51I never said that I would not watch.
13:53So, Gregory, go find that audio before you call in when I'm on.
13:56You still don't have a reason to watch your 3-2?
13:58No, now I have a reason to watch.
14:01And I've said that.
14:01And, Gregory, I've said that.
14:03Hey, Gregory, I've given Watson his credit over the last three weeks.
14:07I have.
14:08In the last three weeks, put together three straight game-winning drives, and for that,
14:12he deserves credit.
14:13He was bad yesterday, guys.
14:15And he's lost six fumbles this year in five games.
14:18There's a reason to believe the clock could be striking midnight on this day.
14:21It's a lot.
14:22All right.
14:23We're back tomorrow, 6-10.
14:25Tone is back tomorrow, 6-10.
14:27And, Nick, thank you for stepping in.
14:28Thank you for having me.
14:29This was more fun than June 1st.
14:30Yes, it was.
14:31We can end this on this.
14:32Brown's down our crap, though, can we?
14:33Yeah, we got the Guardians.
14:36I'm not down about the Browns.
14:37Let's go.
14:38I'm excited for the Guardians.
14:40But I'm not down about the Browns.
14:42Let's go.
14:42Life's not bad right now, guys.
14:45Got Halloween right around the corner.
14:46I'm getting the big Fosters today after the show.
14:49I'm getting a bunch of Fosters.
14:50Going over to Little Italy.
14:52Going to watch the – I don't have football practice today.
14:55Going to watch John Gacy's biography from A&E from back in the day.
14:59Then we're going to watch Guardians Rays game one.
15:02We're going to bury the Rays under them.
15:05Who will be drunker by first pitch, me or John Gacy's late father?
15:12Find out tomorrow morning on The Fan.
15:15For Big Country, for Jeff, for John, for Nick Padone,
15:19for the Slippery Wizard, Anthony Lima, I'm Ken Carman.
15:21Have a wonderful day, my friends.
15:23Go Guards!
15:24Go Guards!
15:25Go Guards!
15:26Go Guards!
