00:00Good morning, Jerry. How are you?
00:02John, RJ, Bobby, good morning to all of you.
00:06Thanks for joining us with your time as always, Jerry.
00:08The number one question I think I have is,
00:11after all the changes, new coordinator, new pieces,
00:15we're all feeling great about the offseason,
00:17and I'm sure it could be your number one question as well, Jerry.
00:20How could the defense on Sunday night look just as bad as last year's?
00:28The last time that I was involved in as much change as we have made this year,
00:36the very last time that I had that experience was the first year
00:40I bought the Dallas Cowboys, and we won one game.
00:45We had 10 coaching staff.
00:50We had, obviously, that's a long time ago.
00:53The game has changed.
00:54You should expect a lot more than what we expected then,
01:00but we changed our scheme out, we changed our coaches out,
01:04and we had a real turnover in players that year.
01:07I think that's a great explanation, really, and a valid one.
01:14There have been a lot of changes made on that side of the ball.
01:17We're very optimistic that we can play better than what we played now,
01:24right now, than we played their Sunday night.
01:28So we will be right back on the field.
01:35We frankly, as you well know, in training camp and in the really preseason games,
01:44we really didn't test out in a game-type situation a real combination of all of our numbers,
01:52if you put the offense, defense, special teams out there.
01:56And so this game was really very much in the air as to what we would have if we walked
02:07out there.
02:07And we caught a giant team that's much improved, that's well-coached,
02:15that basically played us the way that was as effective as we all saw.
02:25They brought the ball away from us.
02:27And we had, frankly, we all saw it, but we had a very successful, if you will,
02:34when we got possession of the ball we scored.
02:38The problem was a lack.
02:40We didn't get the ball they kept from us.
02:43That goes directly to the defense didn't get us the ball back.
02:46Well, we will have our, do have our head down, do have in place, have had it in place our
02:57past year,
02:59the offseason as well as all this fall, the anecdote.
03:03We will practice to it.
03:07We will play to it.
03:08So what we have in mind that this defense will do is what you do after you've had it until
03:16you're right.
03:17And so we won't have to change one thing about what we've got to do, communicate better.
03:24Linebackers have to fill their assigned areas on the defense.
03:31And we had, obviously, that sustained drive.
03:35The other thing that happened was that we all, again, everybody saw it,
03:40is that you had turnover opportunities that dramatically up your chances of possession of the ball.
03:50Be tried.
03:51And we couldn't get those turnover opportunities to go our way.
03:55We got one at least there early, and that resulted in a score.
04:00And then, of course, we made our own turnovers at the bad times.
04:04So we all, you guys saw it, but we have our head down.
04:10We will do some things differently as we line up here this week as far as practice is concerned
04:16than maybe we had anticipated.
04:18But we've got to stay right on, stay with our head down on what we had planned to address this
04:24year
04:24when we change this defense out.
04:27Jerry, you know, I mean, you mentioned, you know, the turnover and the coaches and the players.
04:31You know, the Giants had a lot of the same turnover, right?
04:35They have an entirely new coaching staff, some new players.
04:38Why did they not seem to have the same growing pains in Week 1?
04:44Well, that's how they won the game.
04:47They were able to execute without the effects of turnovers.
04:52They were able to keep the ball away from our offense, and that's how you win the games.
04:59So they won the game.
05:03And again, we yesterday spent a lot of time looking at one-on-ones, how we played individually,
05:13where we made mistakes in our fronts, let's say.
05:18We were able to have a kind of play out of our front line, the front on defense
05:23that we've worked so hard to implement.
05:26The answer is we had some good things happen in there, not good enough,
05:29but we did have some good things.
05:31We had our linebacker and core made some mistakes.
05:35We had some mistakes in the secondary.
05:38And we let some guys get wide, let their offense get wide on us a lot.
05:45So those were just breakdowns on the defense.
05:48So I sound like that we're sitting here looking at the tape.
05:53We don't need to look at the tape to say that overall we have got to bring to the table
05:59a lot more of what we have worked on to change out during the offseason.
06:05We've got to execute on what we were trying to change out.
06:09Now, it's pretty obvious that you don't just go out there, put it on a drawing board,
06:13and have meetings.
06:15You've got to really go out and fundamentally execute what you're trying to get the players
06:21to recognize and execute when they get on the field.
06:24So anyway, the bottom line is that we did not play well,
06:28and they effectively executed a keep-away plan, kept the ball, kept the ball for long duration.
06:37That second half was unbelievable that they were able to have that ball in control
06:44as much as they are.
06:45A lot of that, you've got to take advantage of those turnovers,
06:47and you've got to get that ball back so your offense can get it.

06:53Jerry, what was more disturbing to you?
06:56Because you guys talked about communication a ton this offseason.
06:59The communication issues or the physicality of the Giants winning the line of scrimmage?
07:06Which one kind of bothers you more about the defensive performance?
07:10Communication.
07:11The communication aspects of it.
07:14Just being out of position fundamentally between the two.
07:22Communication.
07:25I recognized, frankly, I was taken back that the physicalness of it wasn't more obvious.
07:36We had some guys play hard, and we had some guys do some good things on both sides of the
07:41ball,
07:41offense and defense.
07:44But I was really surprised and dismayed, as all fans were,
07:53that we couldn't basically stop some of that outside stuff.
07:58I was frustrated that we didn't get more out of our running game,
08:02which would have helped us more in our passing game.

08:34This is a hand line I'm on, but a clad land line this morning, and that was bad, too.
08:40So, communication problem, man.
08:42Communication.
08:44Hey, Jerry, I hear you talk about expected growing pains with the new defense,
08:49but you guys and the fan base, Schottenheimer specifically,
08:53has not been shy about talking about championship aspirations.
08:56Can the two go together, these early growing pains,
09:00how long it's going to take along with championship aspirations?
09:03Can they go together this year?
09:06I'll go to the two teams that played in the Super Bowl last year.
09:11They both lost their opening game.
09:16Both teams were put together, actually, from the crackdown.
09:21They were surprisingly didn't have the continuity that you might expect a Super Bowl to have.
09:29But both those teams lost the opening game.
09:31Both of them evolved as the season went along.
09:35So, very much, it's important.
09:40I've lost the first game and won the Super Bowl.
09:44So, the first game for this team was unquestionably important.
09:51Don't get it wrong.
09:52And we all needed the excitement of a plan executed and in place and have had the kind of game
10:01the Giants had.
10:02But, again, we basically got here to keep in place where we're trying to go with this group.
10:10So, I saw nothing on review all day yesterday.
10:14I saw nothing that tells us we should depart away from the plan we've got of getting better on defense
10:20that we've been on since last year.
10:24Jerry, how much do you think Christian Parker's first time calling a defense
10:28factored into the inability to slow down the Giants?
10:32And what did Christian have to say about why he thought things went sideways?
10:36Well, again, what you're hearing is a summation and an interpretation on my part of what was
10:46basically said throughout the coaching staff from the head coach down, which included Christian.
10:51So, you're fundamentally hearing, summed up in Jones' language, the communication that I had since the ballgame.
11:02Jerry, how early in a season do you normally make a determination on whether or not you need to go
11:10find outside help for the roster?
11:14Well, you temper that with availability of making moves on outside help for the roster.
11:25But that's, if you wanted to, this is a narrow window of making changes on the roster at this date.
11:37You don't have a lot of moving around relative to where you were at other parts of the year.
11:42So, it's not something that you'd plan and say, we're going to reshuffle this deck after your first game.
11:50That's not practical.
11:53Jerry, Overshown gets hurt again.
11:56Are you confident that you can count on him health-wise to be out on the field long-term?
12:04Availability.
12:05I'll use that word again.
12:07But that's being available to play.
12:11That's his Achilles heel, so if I can have a pun a little bit.
12:17But the point is that he does have, has had.
12:25Now, I've seen players that like that they've been a part of their careers and never look back.
12:35And we hope that for him as well.
12:37But this isn't the highest grade of injury with his hamstring.
12:46We're fortunate there that he's not looking at longer time.
12:51But it looks like he'll miss this week.
12:55Jerry, last year after you guys traded Micah, you talked about how pass rush can be schemed
13:00and that was going to be a big part of your plan.
13:02What have the pass rush struggles of the last year done to shape your view on being able to generate
13:07pressure
13:07without a top-tier edge?
13:10Well, everybody wants as much pressure on the quarterback as you can get.
13:18And so there's nothing that has changed my mind on having pressure on the quarterback.
13:24And in the particular case, what you've got to look at is if you can get it, you give up
13:34to get it.
13:35And so that's shaped, if you will, our decisions regarding what we're trying to do to stop the run.
13:46Jerry Vaughn Miller played 11 snaps on Sunday night.
13:50Would you like to have him out there more often?
13:53Well, we ideally would like to be in a situation where, yeah, he could be out there more.
14:00But I look for him, and we look at him, and have looked as though that he will have more
14:08snaps than that.
14:09But we don't look at him.
14:14We look at our entire defensive front as one that will benefit from rotation.
14:20And we've got some depth there.
14:21We had some guys play pretty good out there the other night.
14:24Jared Jones on us here.

14:40Jerry, do you think the plan for the preseason, the lack of playing time that the starters get,
14:47do you think that is the right move?
14:49Do you envision any kind of altering moving forward?
14:54Oh, I think you've got to worry about leaving your game on the field in August, if you will,
15:06the latter part of July.
15:08I think you've got to worry about getting injuries during that time.
15:14And I think where we are right now in preparing these teams, limiting the amount of physical
15:20activity relative to contact, limiting that early on is the right way to go.

15:34It's something that Dak probably could pick up.
15:36What was going through your thought, your mind, when you decided to punt?
15:40Were you in favor of punting on fourth and one, or did you want to go for it?
15:45Well, I could make that decision either way.
15:52I thought we had time to get back if we could get that offense rolling.
15:59I thought we had left ourselves time by putting.
16:03So I'm okay with the decision.
16:05Jerry, you know, Dak had a bad interception in this game.
16:08Javante Williams had a taunting penalty.
16:10George Pickens had struggled with some drops.
16:12Why do you think your offense was so uncharacteristically out of sorts on Sunday?
16:17Well, I think New York, New York, the way they were playing us, let's give them some credit.
16:25Let's give them some credit.
16:26But I don't anticipate the three plays that you're referring to right here and the people
16:33involved in them.
16:34I don't anticipate that to be the case as we go forward.
16:37So I think those plays, those players, are very capable of nine out of ten times.
16:43And maybe that was the one time that we'll see all year, hopefully.
16:48We'll not make those plays and have that result.
16:52Jerry, do you feel like the Dak interception just before the half, was that when the game
16:56kind of turned?
16:59Yes, yes.
17:00But we all know you can't make it on a play.
17:05But a play, sometimes the decisive point.
17:08And there's no question that that was impactful for the entire game, what happened to us.
17:13But again, when they came back out that second half, the way that they were able to control
17:20that clock and eat up that part of the clock, they had to, I think they probably had the
17:26ball, I think, two-thirds time in the second half.
17:30The fact that that resulted in a score right before the half and then turn around and then
17:35make the long drive at the first start of the second half, that definitely was the turn
17:40important again.
17:42Jerry, I'm going to say this next one as a fan.

17:48I'm just going to vent to you, and I'm sure you do the same thing, but the penalties.
17:52Every year, we seem to talk about the penalties, whether it's Garrett, McCarthy, Schottenheimer
17:58shooting themselves in the foot at the wrong time, led the league last year almost in double
18:04digits.
18:05How does this ever get fixed with the penalties?
18:10Well, first of all, if you want to analyze, probably the key penalty that we're talking
18:17about was the one that we have to move forward.
18:21We were going to go for two on the ensuing play.
18:25No matter what, we're going to go for two.
18:30That's a character for that play.
18:34He is the opposite of that in every step of the way.
18:37And if you were going to bet on somebody getting an unsportsmanlike conduct, you would bet
18:43on every player we've got.

19:23Jerry, different from Steven yesterday on with K&C, where Steven said,
19:29I think we had some unrealistic expectations, and we were thinking too much too early.
19:35Jerry, this morning, having a growing pains, expectancy-type delivery.
19:43Right.
19:43I think that is the entrepreneurial spirit in him.
19:49Or the I'm-going-to-keep-selling-it spirit.
19:51Could be.

19:53But that entrepreneur is, that spirit, it's tough to crack.
20:00And it's what makes them billionaires, right?
20:02It's like you're always positive.
20:04You're always thinking, hey, this can get better, this can do this, this can do that.
20:07And I do think that bleeds in.
20:09Because it's hard to watch that first game and not come away with it thinking that,
20:15you know what, maybe we did get a little ahead of our skis here.
20:19But you can't have both, in my opinion.
20:22Brian Schoenheimer, everyone is talking about championship aspirations.
20:26Right.
20:27Okay, and we're also now going to start hearing about some growing pains,
20:31which do make sense.
20:32Yeah.
20:32But which one is it, and where's the balance?
20:36Right, because the Patriots last year started all-in-one, right?
20:40And they wind up winning like 10 straight or something.
20:42They win at the Super Bowl.

21:04And having said that, though, the question is, okay, what are we going to do about it?
21:10What is there to do about it?
21:11Well, the real world is that we're where we thought we were relative to continually working
21:19on the things that you saw kick us in the butt.
21:22And we're going to continue that.
21:24Really, the very things that, frankly, caused us to not win that ball game are the things
21:31that we should be working on and what we were working on going into the game.
21:35The facts are we've got a lot of new people, not necessarily young players, but we've got
21:41a lot of new people on defense doing different things that they've been doing.
21:46So that's got to come together.
21:48If we will keep our head down and keep working on it, it will be better than it was Sunday
21:52night.
21:53Jerry, last one for you.
21:55We were guilty of it.
21:56You know the Christian Parker hype.
21:58He got out of control.
21:59We anointed him.
22:00We're hoping you guys found the next whiz kid young defensive coordinator.
22:05Any part of you wonder whether too much was thrown at him too early?
22:10Was he a little bit overwhelmed at any point leading up to this or during the game?
22:16No.
22:16He's obviously doesn't have the experience that some guys that have been out there 20
22:22years, I don't think you can throw too much at Schottenheimer because of the amount of
22:27experience that he's had.
22:30But Christian will have his head down.
22:35He will be, for instance, in meetings.
22:38Rather than sit there and going over it in meetings, you'll see Christian out there walking
22:44through during the day, walking through of each player, not in the classroom, but walking
22:52through.
22:52So the kind of addressing it that you want to hear is what can we physically do to help
23:00these players more and more recognizing what they need to be communicating with each other,
23:08recognize it, and making it go.
23:10It literally was and is the same problem that we're dealing with, and that is those guys
23:16coordinating who's got who.
23:20That can get better.
23:22That does get better.
23:23But we've got to look for ways to make it get better.
