00:00And we had a couple times where we start to back up,
00:02and we just try to do our best to get out of those zones
00:06so we can help our defense and flip the field.
00:09Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson on just how bad the offense was today.
00:1417-12 loss to the New York Jets.
00:16You fall to 3-2.
00:18I think one of the real frustrating things was watching this game.
00:23Your defense would have an amazing play.
00:26They get the ball.
00:26Carson Swechinger has a strip sack of Geno Smith,
00:30and then Aiden Huntington picks it up, and you go,
00:32okay, this is your opportunity.
00:34Build on that momentum a little bit.
00:36Get something going on offense, and then they immediately go three and out.
00:40And it's like, dude, we all know this defense is really, really good
00:43and that they have the potential to even be better because, again,
00:47today, no Mason Graham, no Mike Hall Jr.
00:49You still are trying to figure out if Miles Harden is a good cornerback
00:53that you can rely on opposite Denzel Ward.
00:57So there's so much excitement here, and you're not rewarding them whatsoever.
01:02You know, the second they get back on the sidelines, it's already second and long,
01:06and you're like, oh, my God, here we go.
01:08I'm going to have to put the oxygen tank down and get the hell back out there
01:11because my offense cannot do anything consistently.
01:14Unfortunately, the defense was great.
01:18There's no qualms whatsoever with the defensive side of the ball.
01:21And again, I understand that it was raining.
01:25First of all, if they couldn't play well in that rain,
01:29if they couldn't run the ball in that weather today,
01:32they're not moving to Brook Park until 2029, guys.
01:35They still got to figure out how to run the ball on whatever weather is coming
01:38when they're in Huntington Bank Field at the end of December and early January.
01:42The weather is only going to get worse.
01:45And if today was too much for them, then they've got a rough thing coming.
01:50This cannot be a team that only plays good in fair weather
01:55or only is able to run the ball when things are already going well for them.
01:59You've got to figure out how to adjust when things are not going well for you.
02:03So Todd Munkin, as a head coach, is clearly a good motivator.
02:07He's clearly put Deshaun Watson in the best position to succeed that he's been in
02:12in a Browns uniform because he's had the most success this year
02:16that he's ever had since coming to Cleveland in 2022.
02:19He's clearly got something there that is good as a head coach.
02:23How do you adjust?
02:25How do you do when things are not going well?
02:29Again, you had 10 days to prepare for this game.
02:31You had 10 days to figure out, yeah, the run game's not looking too great,
02:36but we did a lot of good things against the Steelers.
02:39Let's try and continue to do that.
02:40You got 10 days to put Deshaun Watson in a good position
02:44to get your young playmakers going and putting them in good spots
02:48to move the ball down the field.
02:51You had plenty of time, and you had all of the things going your way
02:55heading into this game.
02:57So, okay, yeah, it was only a five-point loss,
03:00and those are losses that could, you know, two things go your way.
03:06That didn't go your way today, and maybe we're sitting here
03:08celebrating a 17-12 win instead of a 17-12 loss.
03:12But I thought, maybe I was just wrong, that after we started 3-1,
03:16we had removed ourselves from the conversation of being with the Jets
03:21and the Dolphins and the Cardinals.
03:23Excuse me.
03:24I get very choked up.
03:26I thought that we were a little bit better than that.
03:28And so, again, as Browns fans, this has been such a weird year to navigate
03:33throughout all of the success early on, because we're constantly looking at it
03:38like, how am I supposed to see this team?
03:40Is this a young team overperforming expectations,
03:43or do we really truly have actual talent here?
03:46And those guys prior to the year that were predicting us to have eight,
03:50seven wins, they were closer to being right than people like me that thought,
03:54no, this team is just right there with the Jets and the Dolphins.
03:56They're going to win three, four games maybe this season.
03:59I thought that we were a little bit better than that.
04:02So is today just a reality check?
04:03Is today just a one-off, hopefully, that we're going to course correct next week
04:08and we'll be set and sail from there.
04:10And, you know, obviously you have a very difficult game against the Ravens team
04:14that's had your number since they were created as your sort of get-right game.
04:20But I thought that we were better than that.
04:23You know what I mean?
04:23So to grind it out in a game against the New York Jets team
04:27that none of us think is all that good because they're not,
04:29and they were missing guys like Brees Hall and A.D. Mitchell.
04:32So they were, you know, working with a hand tied behind their back.
04:36I thought that we didn't have to grind things out like this anymore.
04:39But the offense was so bad in every single aspect that we did.
04:44So maybe, yes, maybe I do get to the end of tonight
04:47and I say that I need to readjust how I think about this team.
04:50And maybe the 3-1 was a little bit playing over their skis
04:53and luck was going our way a little bit more.
04:56I don't want to do that because I want to be excited that this team
04:59is better than all of us expected.
05:01These last three weeks in Cleveland as a Browns fan coming in here,
05:04talking about wins, it's been some of the most fun I've ever had
05:07working at the station and being a Browns fan.
05:10I don't want to just immediately go back to, well, they're just not that good, right?
05:14And all of that was a little bit fool's gold.
05:17But today it's hard to come out of a game like today
05:19and think that maybe it is a little bit of that.
05:23I think that Todd Munkin's welcome to the NFL game
05:25was getting the doors blown off of him in week one
05:28against the Jacksonville Jaguars when your defense
05:30that was supposed to be the top unit of the team is allowing 34 points
05:34and Deshaun Watson looks incompetent and nothing is going well.
05:38That is your welcome to the NFL game.
05:40But like, yeah, today there were a lot of points
05:42where it felt like he was getting outcoached by Aaron Glenn.
05:45And I like Aaron Glenn.
05:46I hope that it works out with him and with the Jets.
05:49But so far he has looked like Adam Gase.
05:53He's looked like Robert Sala.
05:54He's looked like some of the terrible head coaches
05:56that we've had in the past throughout these last couple of years in New York.
06:01He looked like he had a better hold on things than Todd Munkin did today.
06:05And again, I don't know, like Todd Munkin can't go out there
06:07and block David Bailey for 90 snaps or however much it was.
06:11Todd Munkin can't go out there and catch the ball for Isaiah Bond,
06:14nor can he try and throw the ball to Isaiah Bond.
06:17So at the end of the day, it might just be that the players were not executing.
06:20But I just felt at no point today like he was putting Deshaun Watson
06:25in a good spot to succeed.
06:28Like you have to know what you're working with at that point in time.
06:31And with no KC, with no right tackle, with all the rain that's going on,
06:36I just felt like I needed more from it.
06:39And the offense just continued to press on with this weird fascination
06:45with trying to move the ball downfield in chunk plates.
06:48Like guys, it was so odd because that hasn't been this offense at all this season,
06:53let alone when you have KC Concepcion and Sonny Weather.
06:57Honestly, if you're looking at Jerry Judy or you're trying to see anything from him,
07:03I would just totally throw out any expectation that you have for him.
07:06I honestly am looking at Jerry Judy the rest of this season as the same as like Isaiah Bond,
07:13Malachi Corley.
07:14Like he's a back-end rotational receiver.
07:16And he's clearly like lost his spot as a consistent starter.
07:21This is Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion's team.
07:25This is Quinchon Junkins and Harold Fannin's team.
07:27Jerry Judy has not performed at all these last two years.
07:31And look, that first season here was fun.
07:34We thought that we had really found a diamond in the rough and pulled something out of him.
07:38But whether it's the fact that he's just pissed off or he's, you know, I know at certain points
07:42he hasn't been the best locker room guy or he's just not that good of a wide receiver.
07:46I just wouldn't look to him as somebody that is reliable at all.
07:51And it sucks because he's the guy that has the most rapport with Deshaun Watson.
07:55But I would be totally fine dumping him off for a conditional six-round pick or whatever it is.
08:01Anything to get him off the team because he's just a non-factor.
08:04And it's just frustrating to watch him drop passes, not run routes, not finish routes.
08:09You know, the near interception that Deshaun Watson almost threw that the Jets defender
08:13ended up dropping.
08:13It kind of looked like Jerry Judy just like gave up on the route and he didn't adjust.
08:17So I don't, it's just in order to not get so worked up about him, I've just lowered my
08:24expectations to the floor with Jerry Judy.
08:262-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
08:28And also like, I know that they didn't end up getting Marvin Harrison Jr.
08:31And maybe they tried.
08:32Maybe they weren't even in the sweepstakes at all.
08:35If all it took was a six-round pick and then a late-round pick swap, I mean, I would
08:40have
08:40done that yesterday.
08:41I would have done that 100 times out of 100 times, especially with the extra picks that
08:45you get.
08:45You send the Rams pick over to Arizona, I would 100% take in Marvin Harrison Jr.
08:50here.
08:50And now then you have just a plethora of wide receiving options, young players that match
08:58up more so with your timeline as opposed to Jerry Judy's.
09:01I know he's young-ish, but I mean, man, he's just been awful.
09:05Let's go to Jackie in Strongsville.
09:10Yes.
09:11I think we need to discuss the penalties, the amount of penalties the Browns are getting.
09:16They say they're the most penalized team in the NFL.
09:19Yeah, well, and what's funny, Jackie, is that today they actually somewhat improved their
09:24penalties.
09:25Like, Andrew and Nathan were talking about it on the broadcast that they're playing technically
09:28cleaner football than they had over the last four weeks.
09:32They still, I mean, they still are making, I think, a lot of mistakes for, at this point,
09:37they shouldn't be.
09:40Yep.
09:40I totally agree with you, Jackie.
09:42And it's not just, you know, again, I've talked with high school coaches and it's a
09:47different level.
09:47But if it's a situation where it's like, hey, you, you know, you grabbed onto his face mask
09:54a little bit at the end, or you tugged his jersey and you got popped for defensive pass
09:59interference like that, you can teach that away.
10:02You can coach that out of players.
10:04But again, we saw it today.
10:06It was the 12 men on the field, the procedural penalties.
10:09How many delay of games did we almost have today?
10:12And then we actually got popped for a couple of them illegal formation when DeJuan Jones
10:16was not lined up in the right place.
10:18That's day one stuff.
10:19That's really, really rudimentary stuff.
10:22And I know that Todd Munkin has been working his ass off, trying to figure out how they
10:26mitigate the penalties because it is ridiculous.
10:28And it has been ridiculous.
10:30Hopefully they'll take some positive away from today that they lowered the number of penalties.
10:35Like the jets look like the more undisciplined team team today.
10:38That's why I thought eventually we're going to end up pulling this one out because I mean,
10:42the jets were playing awfully and that's why they were getting penalized so much.
10:45But yeah, I mean, I agree.
10:47There's, there's way too many penalties going on and it's, it's again, it's not just holding
10:52here in a defensive pass interference.
10:54It's the delay game.
10:55It's the operation stuff that Todd Munkin told us at the beginning of the season was much
10:59better with Deshaun Watson than short Sanders.
11:01Not we're still seeing it five weeks into the season.
