00:00I want the unfiltered truth.
00:04Were you ripping, or do you rip the Browns coaching staff
00:09when you're watching the games the way T.J. Watt
00:12ripped his defensive coordinator Thursday night?
00:15I do not, because here's why.
00:17And it's amazing, I didn't really like that by T.J. Watt,
00:19because you know the plan that you have going in.
00:22And once again, I'm not about not changing the plan
00:25or going away from the plan,
00:27but you have a plan that you've worked really hard on
00:29and you kind of stick with that as much as possible.
00:31Now, sometimes the other coaches, their plans are better,
00:34and then you've got to adjust, and then you've got to do that.
00:36But the idea of sticking with what you did and how you, you know,
00:40and obviously you know how I feel about the quarterback position.
00:43I've been saying it for a long time,
00:44but the bottom line is the quarterback from the Browns
00:46has not played very well in a long time.
00:48And even though he's had a couple of good games,
00:50I think the Steelers did a great job of saying,
00:52you know what, we're going to make you beat us.
00:54And he did some good things,
00:56but I thought the plan was good for the Steelers.
00:58Browns just executed better.
00:59But yeah, I don't, I'm not big on yelling at the coaches.
01:02I'm not big on that.
01:03I've always, I'm always almost too biased in helping them
01:07because I feel for the work they put in.
01:09And sometimes when we say it stinks, they know it stinks too.
01:12In fact, they're, they'll tell you it stinks.
01:14So yeah, no, I don't, I stay away from the coaches.
01:17It's a tough gig.
01:19And keep working with me.
01:21You'll be cussing out the coaches in no time.
01:24I'm sure.
01:24We'll see what happens moving forward.
01:25But I mean, I got Padone doing it.
01:28No way.
01:29I, I, this, this, I, I really think guys that this three in one start,
01:34as we're talking about coaches, come on,
01:36you were over Stefanski quickly last year.
01:39I was over Stefanski.
01:39Come on now.
01:40What I was getting ready to say is,
01:42I really think that this is a young team that believes in Todd Munkin.
01:45And I saw that when I was out there, even in voluntary OTAs,
01:49just the way that guys kind of were repeating his messaging.
01:53I was like, this is a young team that just believes in this guy.
01:56And I honestly think to Todd's credit,
02:01that really a young team was probably going to buy into any coach's new message,
02:05just because Stefanski's last year ran out.
02:07It was so obvious to me that his message ran out.
02:11It wasn't hitting with the players and that they were eager to buy into whoever was next.
02:16They thought it was Jim Schwartz.
02:17It wasn't.
02:18They really open, you know, accepted Todd Munkin with open arms.
02:23But I said all off season and all throughout the training camp that I was curious to see
02:28how that buy-in would look when adversity hits.
02:31And adversity hit in the face with the brick week one against Jacksonville
02:38when you go down there and get boat raced the way that they did,
02:41where offensively it was a joke.
02:43You threw an interception on the first drive,
02:45almost threw a second one on the second drive,
02:47and the game was just out of hand before halftime even came around.
02:51You want adversity.
02:52And I was kind of curiously looking for it throughout training camp.
02:57Holy smokes, you got a big batch of adversity out of the gate.
03:02And then they win three straight.
03:04And the young players are part of the reason why you've won three straight.
03:08Guys, I think they got this coaching hire right.
03:11When we spent so much time talking about Udinski and Sheilhaus
03:15and these young up-and-coming offensive minds,
03:19I think you really found out that the whole leader of men thing
03:23really does matter because this is a team that is far from perfect.
03:27And we're going to get into some of the realistic ways
03:30that the Browns can still improve this season
03:32and use this mini-buy to kind of fix a bunch of the things
03:36that has hurt them throughout the first four weeks.
03:38But they are able to overcome those mistakes
03:41because I genuinely believe they fight like hell in the fourth quarter
03:44for this head coach and for this quarterback.
03:47Let's talk about this, though.
03:48And you guys, tell me what you think of this.
03:50So after the Jaguars game, leading up to this,
03:55this is what I like about Todd Munkin.
03:58You're a one-and-done.
03:59You made a poor choice at quarterback.
04:02You're not going to be around for 29 with a new dome.
04:0612 quarters late, your quarterback is getting booed.
04:08We can't play him when he comes back to the Browns in week three.
04:12We can't play him at home.
04:13I'd like to thank you for listening to me when we do our YouTube shows.
04:16But all of us, right?
04:17And I try to keep it – you guys know I always say want to know.
04:21But think about what winning does.
04:23You're 12 quarters later.
04:25Your quarterback has played solid.
04:26But more importantly, the team has played solid.
04:29Now your quarterback is – everybody's the longer leash.
04:33For me, he's playing better.
04:35He got introduced last, and they cheered him.
04:38It's 12 quarters.
04:39That's what winning does.
04:40And for me, it's the idea that Todd Munkin stuck to his guns because you're right.
04:44That's as a coach, you look at it, if they're terrible against the Jets, the conversation changes.
04:50And that's what you sign up for as a football coach.
04:52That's what I love about him is he sticks to his guns through the bad, but now you've got to
04:56see it through the good too
04:57because now everybody's telling you how good you are.
04:59Well, I think that Todd did a brilliant job of managing the Deshaun situation, and this is what I mean
05:06by it.
05:08But going back to the preseason Buffalo game where leading up to the game, Deshaun has asked about the potential
05:15for fans to boo him
05:17because, number one, he hasn't been available to play.
05:20When he has been available to play, he's not been very good.
05:24And also, two, fans were really asked to set aside their moral compass to cheer for this guy and embrace
05:32him.
05:35And there's been no payback on that.
05:38There's been no return on that particular investment.
05:41And Deshaun got up there and said, I don't care.
05:44And all that did was light the match and give the fans the reason to boo.
05:48And then when he went out in that third quarter and he was just, in my view, unplayable, unwatchable, it
05:55was awful.
05:55It was what I was seeing in training camp.
05:58I didn't think he was ready.
05:59And I know we're going to talk about it this morning, how you felt he was better in camp than
06:03I did and a lot of other people.
06:05And I respect that.
06:06But I got four eyes.
06:09Three of them work really well.
06:12And I've seen so many awful quarterbacks come through here that I just know what it looks like.
06:16I don't know what elite quarterback play.
06:18Well, I did when the Buffalo Bills were here for the one practice and I saw Josh Allen play.
06:22I was like, oh, that's what an NFL quarterback is supposed to look like in a practice.
06:27But I thought Munkin handled it brilliantly because then after that game, Deshaun does the, hey, you know, can't believe,
06:35you know, the fans are booing me and that's just so wrong.
06:38You know, cheering when I get hurt.
06:40Plays out his flamethrower.
06:40I remember you and I sat here that next Sunday.
06:43We spent four hours saying you can't, after those comments, you can't put that guy on the field.
06:48But Munkin had other plans and the plans were to put him on the field.
06:52Well, no, but what Munkin did is he sat him down and he said, listen, Deshaun, this is the way
06:56it works.
06:57When you play well, the fans will cheer you.
07:01But when you play like you just did against Buffalo, you're going to get booed.
07:07That's why you're making $46 million this year.
07:11Okay?
07:12Nobody cares that you worked so hard for 18 months or however long that was for you to come back
07:19from the multiple ruptured Achilles.
07:21I care as your coach, but the fans, they don't care.
07:25And you came here with all the stuff that you came here with and they were asked to embrace.
07:30Like, I give Todd Munkin credit.
07:32I think he handled that situation with Deshaun brilliantly.
07:37And, again, this goes to, like, the candor with which Todd expresses himself.
07:41He's told us that.
07:43He told us that Friday on Zoom again.
07:46I think one of the last questions he was asked, he's been asked many times, but he got asked again
07:51about the whole, you know, Deshaun thing or whatever.
07:53And he said, yeah, I had to sit him down and say, hey, like, this is what it is.
07:56You play well, you get cheers.
07:58You don't play well, they're going to boo you.
07:59This is what we sign up for.
08:01If I win, the fans love me.
08:03If I lose as the head coach, the fans want me fired.
08:06That's what I signed up for.
08:08That's exactly right.
08:09Okay?
08:09And I think that that message, and I'm going to get, this is where I give Deshaun credit, it appears
08:17he listened to the message.
08:19Okay?
08:20It appears, because he is mentally fragile.
08:25We have seen that here.
08:27And I'm not, that's not me, again, taking a cheap shot.
08:31Like, we've seen it.
08:32He is affected by how the fans treat him.
08:38It does affect him.
08:40If they're cheering for him, that energizes him, and I think it really does help him on the field.
08:46When it's the other side, when they're booing him, I think it affects him on the field.
08:50And things snowball on him.
08:52Okay?
08:54And it's easy for me to sit in this chair with you two guys in the room, and Jack's on
08:58the other side of the glass, and talk about how he can't do that, how he has to have the
09:03blinders on, or the earplugs in, or the what, right?
09:05Like, it's easy for me to sit here and say that, but he is a human being.
09:10I mean, I lost, my AirPods disappeared yesterday.
09:13Well, they didn't disappear.
09:14I know where they are.
09:15But, like, half the people are like, oh, that stinks.
09:18I'm sorry to hear that.
09:19The other half the people are like, good, I'm glad.
09:21You're a bleepity, bleepity, bleep, and you deserve it.
09:24And it's that and the other.
09:25Well, I'm a public figure.
09:28Like, that's what I signed up for as well.
09:31I'm in the public sphere.
09:32Some people are going to like what I have to say.
09:35Some people are not going to like what they have to say.
09:38And they have no problems expressing that.
09:41But, and I will admit, 10, 15 years ago, it really bothered me.
09:48The mentions really bothered me.
09:51And, you know, because now, I admit, I'm not always sunshine to be around, and I have my moments.
10:00But I do feel like I treat people well.
10:03I feel like I help people out.
10:05I feel like I look after colleagues and friends, and I'm there for folks that matter to me, and things
10:12like that.
10:13And I recognize that there are times in my life where I do fall short of that.
10:19And I feel bad about it.
10:20It's not intentional.
10:22But, like, I've learned that, yeah, I mean, people are people.
10:27They're going to feel and say and express themselves, how they're going to do it.
10:31And, you know, I can't let the negative mentions get at me.
10:40Because I should be happy, even if they're telling me to go fly a kite with a bunch of expletives.
10:48They're taking the time out of their day to express that to me.
10:55So, you know, okay, that is what it is.
10:59And it's their right to feel that way.
11:01And it took me, and the reason I'm telling this story is just to kind of, like, it took me
11:06a while to understand that.
11:09Now, it's like I look at the mentions, and I saw this stuff yesterday.
11:12I chuckled at some of it.
11:13I wanted to respond to some of it because there were some pretty hilarious things said to me in a
11:18very negative sense.
11:20But, like, that's the place.
11:23Deshaun needs to get to the place that I, it took me years upon years upon years to get to,
11:30okay?
11:30Like, it took a long, long time for me to get to that accepting of everybody has an opinion.
11:37Everybody has a keyboard and a microphone and a camera and whatever to say and express themselves how they want.
11:43There ain't nothing I can do about it.
11:45I'm not going to change their opinion of me as a person or even professionally.
11:48It is what it is.
11:50I just try and do my job to the best of my ability, work as hard as I can work,
11:56be as genuine with my opinion as I can, call it the way I see it.
12:03When I'm wrong, I'll say I'm wrong.
12:05I was wrong.
12:06I think I'll admit I was wrong about Todd Munkin.
12:09Didn't think it was going to work.
12:10Thought he was a one and done.
12:11Thought he was a placeholder.
12:13Guess what?
12:14He's doing a hell of a job.
12:15Teams 3-1, they're listening to him.
12:17Deshaun's listening to him.
12:19Offense listening to him.
12:19Defense listening to him.
12:20Special teams listening to him.
12:21So he's a fan.
12:23This is what you want.
12:24It ain't always going to be pretty.
12:26You're going to have ebbs and flows in games.
12:28You're going to have three straight touchdown drives and then three straight punts.
12:31That's football for you.
12:32Let's go.
12:32Let's go.
