00:00Hi there, welcome to the latest update from the Met Office.
00:03It's been a lively start for some parts of the United Kingdom on Thursday morning with
00:07some thundery rain moving north, the origins of which can be traced back to Wednesday evening.
00:13This is the picture, the radar and the lightning, 6pm Wednesday.
00:18And you can see isolated thunderstorms breaking out across central areas, very hit and miss
00:23storms, but this more organised area of really quite heavy rain pushing overnight into southern
00:29counties of England, then across Wales and the Midlands.
00:32All these flashes then appearing as it moved through the Midlands and that's still going
00:37on.
00:37It's continuing to move north at the time of recording.
00:40You can see it's positioned by 1pm across north Wales, clearing the Midlands into northern
00:46England, east Anglia.
00:47So the potential within this system to see some impacts, 30 to 50 millimetres in a few
00:54hours in some spots that could cause localised flooding, despite the fact that we need so
00:58much more rain after the summer so far.
01:00Behind that system, we've got further thunderstorms potentially developing, again, highly hit
01:05and miss, through parts of mid Wales into the Midlands, southwest peninsula for example,
01:10but also a lot of dry weather returning to southern parts of England and south Wales,
01:15some sunny spells, feeling humid, 25 to 27 Celsius.
01:19A little fresher further north, but for Northern Ireland, for much of Scotland, we've got cloudy
01:24skies, a few showers around, but the north-west of Scotland generally dry with sunny spells
01:29all day long.
01:30Now, this thundery rain plume moves north overnight.
01:34It's going to push into parts of Northern Ireland, southern Scotland.
01:37It eases and fragments a little, but still the potential for some lively rain rates and
01:41some rumbles of thunder.
01:43Outbreaks of rain also into the east of Scotland.
01:46Further showers or heavy thunderstorms further south, but we're also watching developments over
01:53France very carefully for the second half of Thursday because there's the risk of an organised
01:57cluster of thunderstorms moving out of France and brushing eastern parts of England, most
02:03likely east of the meridian, and there's the chance that this will remain entirely offshore.
02:09Its track is uncertain because this is going to actually form through the afternoon in part
02:15of France and move north.
02:17So, if it hits the east of England, there's the risk of 50, perhaps 75 millimetres of rain
02:22falling in a few hours and frequent lightning, gusty winds and so on, but there is that chance
02:28that it will stay offshore and not cause the kinds of impacts you'd expect from those kinds
02:33of rain rates.
02:34Either way, it's moving through to the North Sea overnight and elsewhere, we've got further
02:39showers wrapped around an area of low pressure which is centred over the UK.
02:42And as we begin Friday, well, it's a mild start for many, but an awful lot of showery rain
02:49around for parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Western England and Wales, drier to the south-east
02:53eventually as well as the far north-west.
02:56Here's the situation then as we begin Friday.
02:59This system moving north and fragmenting, low pressure sitting over the UK and a west and
03:06north-westerly airflow with an occluded front pushing back into western areas, bringing a focus
03:12for further showers and longer spells of rain.
03:14The heaviest rain most likely out into the North Sea, but could push back into Shetland
03:19and Orkney by the afternoon.
03:21Meanwhile, it's a day of bright spells, but also frequent showers for many.
03:26Again, heavy showers, perhaps a few rumbles of thunder, but less widely compared with Thursday.
03:32More likely these are just rain showers and in between there'll be some sunny spells with
03:38temperatures a little lower compared with Thursday.
03:41Low 20s more likely, widely, high teens across much of Scotland.
03:45That brings us on to the weekend and it looks like it's going to stay very mixed across the UK.
03:51Much needed rain, of course, for many areas, but it's certainly going to be highly changeable
03:56with spells of rain, showers, but also some brighter weather at times you can just make
04:01out there on the edge of the screen some of the rain coming in for Saturday.
04:05We'll keep it updated as always on our YouTube channel, but for now, that's all for me.
04:08Bye-bye.
