00:06We've got high pressure close to the UK once again bringing widespread sunny skies for England and Wales
00:11and some parts of Scotland. The heat has been building through the week and it peaks on Thursday.
00:16But we also have a weather front moving into the north and west of Scotland, Northern Ireland.
00:19That's going to introduce more instability into the atmosphere and by the afternoon some very lively
00:25thunderstorms developing through Northern Ireland with the risk of torrential rain, frequent lightning,
00:30large hail, gusty winds where they occur. But of course as is always the case with thunderstorms
00:35they'll be hit and miss highly variable from place to place. Also this area of heavy rain for the north
00:40and west of Scotland always the possibility of some rumbles of thunder associated with this and
00:43some isolated thundery showers are possible through southern and eastern parts of Scotland,
00:49northwest England. Elsewhere across England and Wales another widespread sunny and very hot day.
00:54We're talking about temperatures reaching the high 20s through parts of Northern Ireland into central,
01:00southern and eastern Scotland and perhaps 30 Celsius or a touch higher for some parts of the warmer
01:06spots in Scotland. A humid day expected here further south across England and Wales widely up into the
01:13mid-30s from East Wales into the Midlands parts of Northern England and in one or two spots 37 or
01:2038
01:21Celsius possible most likely through central and western parts of England. Now we've gotten used to
01:27temperatures in excess of 35 Celsius this summer but it's worth emphasising how exceptional these kinds
01:33of temperatures are. 37, 38 Celsius really quite rare in our climate and we don't have the infrastructure
01:39to deal with them so infrastructure impacts and also widespread health impacts are possible. Here are
01:45the warning areas, the yellow warning for thunderstorm there for Northern Ireland, the amber warning for
01:50extreme heat has been extended a little further westwards this morning because of the increased risk of
01:55those 37, 38 Celsius temperatures pushing into parts of western and central England and if 38 Celsius or at least
02:06above 38
02:07Celsius is recorded then that would make it the hottest day of the year. So far the August record
02:12is 38.5 Celsius. Now the heat does lessen overnight for the north and the west of the UK. It's
02:22going to be a very warm
02:23night in the east and southeast with temperatures staying above 20 Celsius in places but with these
02:28thundery showers continuing and pushing at times into western Scotland certainly going to feel a little
02:34fresher, fresher air coming in from the west, high teens or mid-teens in places across western England and
02:40Wales. It's not quite as warm in the north and the west overnight but certainly a warm start to the
02:45day for
02:46eastern and southeastern parts of the country. Temperatures rising quickly through the morning, another hot day for many
02:51parts of England but not so hot for Wales or indeed for Scotland and Northern Ireland where temperatures are going
02:58to reach in
03:00Scotland and Northern Ireland high teens, low 20s. England and Wales more likely widely than mid to high 20s but
03:07we're still above 30
03:08Celsius through the Midlands, East Anglia, the south and southeast of England. Top temperature on Friday 33, 34 Celsius towards
03:16the
03:16southeast so yeah still really quite hot but nowhere near as hot as Thursday. Some showers are developing across even
03:25southern parts of England and into
03:27Wales on Friday but nowhere near enough of course not anywhere near what we need.
03:34Showers also continuing into the northwest of Scotland parts of Northern Ireland through the day
03:39and we're going to see some heavy rain at times across northern parts of the UK
03:44through the latter part of the weekend and into early next week but at least over the next seven days
03:49some parts of the south
