00:00Hi there.
00:01We need the rain, that's for sure, but we don't want it all to fall in one day.
00:04That's almost what happened across parts of the Midlands through Thursday as an area of
00:08thundery rain moved north, dropping more than 50 millimetres in some locations in a short
00:13space of time.
00:14That's now pushing into southern Scotland and Northern Ireland.
00:16Behind it, we've got showers and this area to watch out for, a developing storm system
00:21across northern France.
00:22Some uncertainty on its track at the time of recording, but it could well bring some
00:25very heavy rainfall, 50 millimetres again or more across eastern parts of England through
00:30the hours of darkness, along with thunderstorms, gusty winds, frequent lightning.
00:34So that's something we're watching closely, but there's every chance it'll just miss the
00:40far south east and largely stay offshore.
00:42It does push into the North Sea overnight.
00:45Elsewhere towards the far northwest, clear spells, south east England as well clearing up and
00:50wind temperatures staying reasonably high, 15, 16 Celsius, high humidities remaining, extensive
00:57cloud in between, showers or longer spells of rain for much of central and eastern Scotland
01:02as well as western and northern England.
01:04Wales seeing an unsettled start to the day, gusty winds, further showers and longer spells
01:10of rain moving through.
01:11You can see either side of that, it's drier for a time for east England in the south east
01:14before scattered showers arrive into the afternoon and it stays predominantly dry in western Scotland
01:19as well as Northern Ireland, but it goes downhill for Shetland and for Orkney with some heavy
01:23and prolonged rain arriving after lunch along with a gusty wind.
01:28So quite a mixed picture across the UK.
01:30It's cooler compared with much of the week so far, 22, 23 Celsius, lower humidities.
01:35It's not going to feel very warm when these showers move through either, but in between
01:39some sunny spells and of course the sun is still relatively strong at this time of year.
01:43The wettest weather moves to the east of England during the evening and then clearer skies for
01:49many overnights, clearest skies, Scotland, eastern England, but we do have further rain
01:56to come for Shetland.
01:57By the end of the night, heavy and at times prolonged rain pushes into Wales and the south
02:03west as well as Northern Ireland.
02:05Wherever you are, it's a relatively mild night, 15 or 16 Celsius.
02:09So as one low pressure departs, another turns up from the west and that's going to swing
02:14its weather fronts in from the south west for the start of the weekend.
02:18This system is very active indeed.
02:20It's going to lead to a wet start to the day for Wales and Western England.
02:24Northern Ireland seeing outbreaks of rain on and off.
02:27Then it pushes north eastward swiftly through Saturday morning.
02:30By lunchtime, much of England and Wales seeing heavy rain at times, followed by showers, gusty
02:35winds, especially towards the south west, some really quite strong winds developing.
02:38And in the north and north east of Scotland, it will be breezy, but here drying up and brightening
02:44up through the day.
02:45So we've got this area of rain straddling the country, lively showers following on, the
02:50odd thunderstorm as well, and with that strong breeze in the south and south west, certainly
02:54feeling much cooler, perhaps feeling more autumnal compared with much of the week so far.
03:02But we do end the weekend on Sunday and into Monday, of course, bank holiday for many,
03:07with further spells of rain and heavy showers.
