27 May - National morning weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there.
00:01Following the truly unprecedented May temperatures of the last couple of days, some of you might
00:07appreciate the different feel across the east and southeast of England.
00:11On Wednesday, with high pressure relocating towards the north of the UK, we're going
00:16to see more of an east-to-northeasterly airflow, pushing the heat further west and southwest.
00:22That means that for many parts of the UK, it's a significantly cooler day.
00:26For some areas, it's actually a hotter day.
00:30But for much of Scotland, particularly towards the east, as well as northeast England, we'll
00:34see areas of cloud continuing into the afternoon.
00:36That's certainly going to make things feel much cooler.
00:38And with this North Sea breeze setting in across many central and eastern parts of the UK, that's
00:45going to deduce much lower temperatures.
00:47We're talking about the low to mid-20s for the East Midlands, East Anglia and the southeast,
00:52rather than the low to mid-30s.
00:55However, we are still likely to see some very high temperatures towards the southwest of
01:00England and parts of the south and west of Wales, 32 to 33 Celsius, the UK high, most
01:07likely towards the west country in the southwest.
01:10Meanwhile, it's a warmer day also across parts of Northern Ireland, the north and west of Scotland,
01:15with plenty of sunshine here and temperatures into the mid-20s, perhaps even approaching 27 Celsius
01:21in some parts of the north and northwest of Scotland and the north and northwest of Northern
01:26Ireland.
01:27Here's a map showing the temperature difference compared with Tuesday afternoon and the blue
01:31areas show where it's extensively cooler compared with the peak of the heat on Tuesday and significantly
01:37so across East Anglia and the southeast.
01:39Still plenty of strong sunshine but with a much, much cooler breeze.
01:43Meanwhile, West Wales, parts of the southwest and central southern England, about the same,
01:49if not hotter by a degree or so, and you can see that increase in temperatures across
01:53the northwest of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
01:56Now the heat, still enough to set off some heavy thundery showers through the day and more
02:01especially through the evening and overnight.
02:02These showers could occur anywhere across England and Wales, but they're going to move through,
02:07move their way northeastwards with some flashes of lightning, rumbles of thunder through the
02:11night.
02:11And then another very warm night in many places, not quite as warm as previous nights through
02:18the week, but 16, 17, perhaps 18 Celsius in places, uncomfortable once again for sleeping
02:23away from the north of Scotland.
02:25Here are the showers as we begin Thursday, moving their way swiftly northeastwards.
02:29And then another fine day for many, plenty of sunshine out there, mostly dry.
02:34A brisk breeze, that's going to make things feel cooler in itself, and that breeze coming
02:39in from the North Sea across eastern parts of the UK.
02:42So yeah, along that coast, a cool day once again, but inland, actually temperatures are
02:47a touch higher through the Midlands and the southeast of England once again, 30, 31 Celsius
02:52possible from London up to the east Midlands.
02:55A slightly cooler day towards the southwest, a bit more cloud and some showers appearing as
02:59well.
03:00And those showers once more moving through central parts as we end Thursday.
03:04And you'll see the winds coming more from the southwest across western parts of the UK.
03:09And actually, this marks a gradual change during the rest of the week and into the weekend.
03:13Westerlies begin to return.
03:15Initially, the weather stays mostly fine, but through the weekend, an increased chance of
03:19some Atlantic rain or showers.
03:21And those temperatures continuing their downward trend back towards average for the start of
03:26next week.
