14 August - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there. Most parts of the UK will be warm or very warm with no rain during Thursday.
00:07But where it does rain, it's likely to pour down and specifically that's across parts of central and eastern Scotland,
00:14eastern parts of Northern Ireland where there is the risk of thunderstorms.
00:17The thunderstorms especially across central and eastern Scotland, really quite intense, frequent lightning, gusty winds
00:22and rainfall rates amounting to 60 to 80 millimetres in some spots.
00:28But they'll be highly localised, very hit and miss.
00:31Likewise, across parts of eastern Northern Ireland, we're likely to see 30 to 50 millimetres, again, in very localised areas.
00:39One or two showers across northern England and north Wales.
00:41But actually for many parts of the UK, it's dry, it's sunny spells and it's still very warm, but not quite as hot as previous days.
00:50More like mid to high 20s, 29 Celsius, the most likely hot spot in the south east.
00:59Now heading into the evening, those thunderstorms where they do occur will rumble on for a time before eventually fading away.
01:06And then most places dry overnight with some patchy cloud here and there, but a lot of clear spells.
01:11The most likely cloudy areas, northern Scotland into the North Sea coast where there'll be some low cloud and mist,
01:17about a few mist patches elsewhere. Temperatures again on the relatively high side overnight.
01:23We start off Friday with areas of cloud, especially across these northern and eastern areas of the UK.
01:31The cloud tending to push into parts of the east of England for a time.
01:36Elsewhere across the country, it's sunny spells and the heat is beginning to build once again.
01:42It's a hotter day across southern parts of the country.
01:45Cooler further north and northeast, especially where we've got that low cloud rolling in for the North Sea.
01:49But, yes, certainly high 20s, perhaps even 30 or 31 Celsius across some southern and southeastern parts of England, for example.
01:59Like I say, temperatures closer to the low 20s across the north and more like the mid to high teens where we've got the cloudier areas.
02:06And that cloud tending to creep back into the east on Friday night.
02:10And I think that cloud will be a notable aspect of the forecast heading into the weekend because we've got high pressure re-establishing itself,
02:17but sitting just to the north and northwest of the UK.
02:20So we've got this easterly airflow and quite a brisk breeze, actually, on Saturday across parts of Wales and the southwest.
02:26And those areas of low cloud affecting eastern parts.
02:30In between, still some warmth, still some sunshine, and it's going to be mostly dry through the weekend for the vast majority.
