22 December - National forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there, the transition from very wet and mild to much drier but colder is now starting
00:07to take place. Not everywhere is less wet but certainly less rain around and the key
00:14areas for further rain are the north-west of Scotland and the south-west of England
00:19during the next couple of days. Also some patchy rain for Northern Ireland during Monday
00:23afternoon but the more persistent and heavier stuff across the north-west of Scotland tending
00:27to become more showery and fizzle away. A few showers still possible for parts of Cornwall.
00:31Some bright spells breaking out across western England, west Wales, otherwise a lot of cloud
00:36cover affecting the UK. That cloud is low and so it's going to be covering the hills extensively
00:42especially for the north and across eastern parts of the UK. Temperatures 10 to 12 celsius
00:50generally so it's still technically mild but not quite as mild as it has been. The temperatures
00:56are going to slip away over the next few days. Having said that, because of the extensive
01:02cloud overnights, those temperatures aren't going to fall very far and will keep a keen
01:07breeze as well. Further showers to come for parts of the south-west, perhaps pushing into
01:12Pembrokeshire and some showery rain in the north and north-west of Scotland. Drizzly outbreaks
01:17of rain with that low cloud over higher parts of central Scotland, northern England for example,
01:23a lot of cloud around. So like I say, temperatures only dipping to 6 to 8 celsius, although where
01:29we get some clear spells in the north-west of Scotland are a touch lower than that.
01:34We start off with gloomy skies for most, with some showery rain affecting Cornwall as well
01:40as Devon, perhaps Dorset for a time. That tending to peter away into the afternoon. Further
01:46showery outbreaks of rain also for the far north and north-west of Scotland, becoming more persistent
01:51perhaps for Lewis and Harris later. Drizzly spots for higher parts of central and eastern
01:57Scotland, northern England where we've got that extensive low cloud and hill fog. And
02:02you can see widespread grey skies for most. But where we've got some shelter with the easterly
02:08breeze setting in, brighter spells will break out for west Wales, parts of western England for
02:13example. But that easterly breeze, as it sets in, is going to make it feel colder. Temperatures
02:19still not far from average, but 7 to 9 celsius with that breeze, obviously not going to feel
02:25as mild as it has done recently. And that easterly breeze, the theme as we go into the next few
02:31days, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dominated by it, but mostly dry weather. Having said that,
02:38outbreaks of rain will affect the north of Scotland as we end Tuesday and go into Christmas
02:42Eve. And here's the high pressure responsible for the easterly wind. It's going to set up shop to the
02:48north of the UK, so we keep an easterly for southern parts. That's going to make it feel cold with the
02:54tightly packed isobars for Christmas Day. It's going to be a very blustery day, but it is going to be
03:01mostly dry, albeit with a fair amount of cloud around and that cold feel. So, yeah, gloomy skies next few days,
03:09but much less wet compared with December so far.
