03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, you, the greatest lover of the human race, who, when you
03:58were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close, brought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar
04:05of the cross for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works, namely, to seek your

13:27A reading from the Gospel according to St. John, chapter 6.
13:34Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus began complaining about him,
13:37Because he said,
13:39I am the bread that came down from heaven.
13:42And they said,
13:44Isn't this Jesus, the son of Joseph,
13:46Whose father and mother we know?
13:49How can he say,
13:51I have come down from heaven?
13:55Jesus replied,
13:57Do not complain about me to one another.
14:00No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him,
14:04And I will raise him up at the last day.
14:09It is written in the prophets.
14:11And they will all be taught by God.
14:15Everyone who hears and learns from the Father comes to me.
14:20Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God.
14:24He has seen the Father.
14:27I tell you the solemn truth.
14:29The one who believes has eternal life.
14:32I am the bread of life.
14:35Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness and they died.
14:39This is the bread that has come down from heaven,
14:42So that a person may eat from it and not die.
14:46I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
14:49If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever.
14:54The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.
15:00Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus began to argue with one another, saying,
15:05How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
15:12Jesus said to them,
15:13I tell you the solemn truth.
15:16Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
15:19You have no life in yourselves.
15:22The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.
15:26And I will raise him up on the last day.
15:30For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.
15:34The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood resides in me and I in him.
15:41Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father,
15:45So the one who consumes me will live because of me.
15:50This is the bread that came down from heaven.
15:53It is not like the bread your ancestors ate, but then later done.
15:57The one who eats this bread will live forever.
16:04Jesus said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
16:11Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, said,
16:15This is a difficult saying.
16:17Who can understand it?
16:22When Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining about this,
16:26He said to them,
16:28Does this cause you to be offended?
16:31Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?
16:35The Spirit is the one who gives life.
16:38Human nature is of no help.
16:41The words that I have spoken to you are Spirit and are life.
16:45But there are some of you who do not believe.
16:49For Jesus had already known from the beginning,
16:52Who those were who did not believe,
16:54And who it was who would betray him.
16:58So Jesus added,
17:00Because of this I told you that no man could come to me,
17:04Unless the Father had allowed him to come.
17:09After this many of the disciples quit following him,
17:12And no longer accompanied him.
17:16So Jesus said to the twelve,
17:18You don't want to go away too, do you?
17:23Simon Peter answered him,
17:25Lord, to whom would we go?
17:28You have the words of eternal life.
17:30We have come to believe,
17:32And to know that you are the Holy One of God.
17:37Jesus replied,
17:39Didn't I choose you, the twelve?
17:41And yet one of you is the devil.
17:45Now he said this about Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.
17:49For Judas, one of the twelve,
17:51Was going to betray him.
17:55This is the word of the Lord.
17:58Thanks be to God.
18:07The Greek word used here in verse 44,
18:11That is translated draws,
18:13Is enlightening in the context of today's passage,
18:17As the original word suggests,
18:19Pulling something that is offering resistance,
18:22Rather than an invitation.
18:28John uses the same word in chapter 21,
18:33Verses 6 and 11,
18:35Where he refers to the nets,
18:37Being dragged to the shore when full of fish.
18:41Luke also used it in Acts 16, 19,
18:45To describe the way that Paul and Silas,
18:48Were taken before the magistrates in Philippi.
18:52And this perhaps,
18:53Is the best context to think of,
18:55For the current passage.
18:59If we are honest,
19:00Were we all not,
19:02Dragged, kicking and screaming,
19:04To conversion.
19:06Furthermore,
19:07After our conversion,
19:08How much resistance did we put up,
19:10To renouncing the things of the world,
19:12And of our past,
19:13And to accept only Christ.
19:17Indeed,
19:18For many of us,
19:19The battle is still continuing,
19:21For buried deep inside,
19:23There still lurks a little pride,
19:25Perhaps.
19:26Or maybe,
19:28There is a tendency to judge people,
19:30And to think ourselves better than they are,
19:33Instead of thinking how bad we are.
19:38Perhaps, even,
19:39We still think more about our bank account,
19:42Than we do of Jesus.
19:45These things are all quite natural,
19:47But we need to pray about them,
19:49So that we may have the final victory over them,
19:53And learn to be totally immersed in Christ.
19:59Jesus was continuing here,
20:01His discourse,
20:02Explaining that the one who believes in him,
20:04Will have eternal life.
20:07Today,
20:08He expands on this,
20:09To give the example,
20:10Of the Israelites in the desert.
20:13Manna was sent by God as food for them,
20:16When there was nothing else for them to eat,
20:18In order that they might reach the promised land.
20:24However,
20:25There was going to be a problem,
20:26For when they saw the promised land in the distance,
20:30Their belief evaporated,
20:31And God in his anger,
20:33Vowed that generation,
20:34Would not cross over into the land,
20:37But spend another 40 years wandering,
20:39Before they die.
20:43Today,
20:44We find ourselves as wanderers,
20:46In the desert of the world.
20:49Jesus has offered us,
20:50His body as food for us,
20:52A spiritual food,
20:53That will allow us to enter,
20:55Into the kingdom of heaven,
20:56And find eternal life.
20:59But unlike the Jews in the desert,
21:01We have to believe.
21:04The Jews who sat around the feet of Jesus,
21:06Had gone to listen to what he had to say,
21:09But then to ridicule him,
21:11Or make arguments with him.
21:14When we read the word,
21:16We need to listen,
21:17And also learn to obey.
21:22Many years ago,
21:23I came across a good example,
21:25Of what this passage means.
21:28A speaker was telling us,
21:30To imagine a man,
21:31With a study.
21:33And in that study,
21:34Was a large bookcase,
21:36And on the shelves,
21:37One of the shelves of that bookcase,
21:39Was a complete set,
21:41Of the works of William Shakespeare.
21:44For many years,
21:45Those books looked dry,
21:47And uninteresting,
21:48And the man never even opened,
21:50One of them.
21:52Then one day,
21:53Out of boredom,
21:54He reached for one of the books,
21:56And read it.
21:58From cover to cover,
22:00And fell in love with it,
22:02Immediately reading,
22:03The remaining volumes,
22:04Of the set.
22:08In many ways,
22:09Jesus is like that set of books,
22:11And we are like the man,
22:12In this story.
22:14We might know,
22:15That he exists,
22:16In the same way,
22:16That the man knew,
22:17He had the books,
22:18Of Shakespeare on the shelf.
22:21But as long as they remained on the shelf,
22:23The contents of them,
22:24Remained there also.
22:28When the man read,
22:30And took the contents into his heart,
22:32He found them so moving,
22:33He had to read on,
22:34And on,
22:36Until it was complete.
22:38For us,
22:39When we invite Jesus into our heart,
22:41And truly get to know him,
22:44He goes from merely someone,
22:45We know of,
22:47To being our Lord,
22:48Our master,
22:49Our best and ever friend,
22:52Our help,
22:54The one we can truly rely on,
22:56And trust in all things,
22:58The one that we wish to dedicate,
23:00Our lives wholeheartedly to.
23:06This passage is also of course,
23:08A preface to the commandment,
23:10Given by Jesus at the last supper,
23:13To take the bread and the wine,
23:14In remembrance of him,
23:16Feeding on him with thanksgiving.
23:20It is also a speech by Jesus,
23:23That would not have been totally alien,
23:25To his Jewish listeners,
23:27Had they actually stopped,
23:29And thought about what he had told them,
23:31Rather than being indignant,
23:33About the mere words.
23:36When sacrifices were made in the temple,
23:39The animals sacrificed,
23:40Were divided up.
23:42A part was sacrificed and burnt,
23:45And a part was given to the priest.
23:48The remainder was eaten,
23:50By the family and friends,
23:51In the courtyard.
23:55However,
23:56It was believed by the Jews,
23:57That at the point that the sacrifice,
23:59Was burnt,
24:00And accepted by God.
24:02A little bit of God,
24:03Entered into the rest of the meat.
24:09However,
24:10The Jews had largely decided,
24:11That they did not like the messenger,
24:13And so they would ignore the message.
24:17They had decided,
24:18That this was just a lonely carpenter's son,
24:20From the backwoods of Galilee.
24:22And so he could not possibly,
24:24Be a true prophet,
24:25Or indeed anything to do with God.
24:28They saw him as a spectacle,
24:31Entertainment,
24:32And not anything to be taken seriously,
24:35Or even considered.
24:40The closing verses,
24:41Mark one of the great turning points,
24:43In the ministry of our Lord.
24:46In a few verses,
24:47We have a microcosm of life,
24:49And the people we pass by,
24:51While we sojourn in it.
24:54Over the past few days,
24:56We have been reading,
24:57Some very strong teaching from Jesus,
24:59And it was seen,
25:00That it had struck hard,
25:01With the people who had heard it.
25:04It has been said,
25:06That there were three possible reactions,
25:08To Jesus at this point.
25:10And we can see how the disciples,
25:12Were sorted by how they reacted.
25:15First of all,
25:16There were those who had come along,
25:18For the ride.
25:19Those who had been impressed,
25:21By the miracles,
25:22And perhaps,
25:23Having nothing better to do,
25:25Had been making up the crowd,
25:27That had been following Jesus,
25:28For some time.
25:31Now that they had been given,
25:33Some adult food,
25:34To digest in his teaching,
25:36They balked at the idea.
25:40Perhaps they had already been,
25:42Growing a little uncomfortable,
25:43With some of the things,
25:44That they had heard.
25:46But today,
25:47They were given their excuse.
25:50Verse 66,
25:51Tells us that many of the disciples,
25:53Went home at this point,
25:54And did not come back again.
26:01Secondly,
26:02There is a pointed reference,
26:03By John to Judas.
26:07Perhaps this was the point,
26:09Where John detected,
26:10A change in the relationship,
26:12Between betrayer and betrayed.
26:16We will never know,
26:17But it is quite possible,
26:19That a disillusionment,
26:20Was already beginning to grow,
26:22In the heart of Judas.
26:27Thirdly,
26:27There are those who,
26:29Even though they did not,
26:30Fully understand,
26:31Realised that Jesus,
26:33Was something very special,
26:34Was for real,
26:36And we have that wonderful,
26:37Profession of faith,
26:38By Peter,
26:39In verses 68 and 69.
26:43Perhaps,
26:44It would be good for us,
26:46To repeat these words,
26:47From time to time,
26:49As we kneel before Jesus,
26:51In perfect humility.
26:57Let us pray,
27:00Almighty and everlasting God,
27:02Who is always more ready to hear,
27:04Than we are to pray,
27:06Who is willing to give more,
27:08Than either we desire,
27:09Nor deserve,
27:11Pour upon us,
27:12The abundance of your mercy,
27:14Forgive us,
27:15Those things of which,
27:16Our conscience is afraid,
27:19And giving us,
27:20Those good things,
27:21Which we are not worthy to ask,
27:24But through the merit,
27:25And mediation of Jesus Christ,
27:28Your Son,
27:28Our Lord,
27:30Amen.
27:35May the Lord bless us,
27:37And keep us from all evil,
27:40Bringing us to everlasting life,
