00:34grief and tears, and so truly took compassion on her sorrow, commending her to the care of your disciple John,

02:40Grant that no love of any transitory object may possess my soul, that I may never attach myself to any
02:47creature, and that even when I am bound to love, I may love only in you.

03:09permitted a sponge filled with vinegar to be offered to you, and that by tasting of this, you might make

03:29and may I use with moderation and thanksgiving whatever you do give me for the support of my poor body.

03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, you, the greatest lover of the human race, who, when you
03:58were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close, wrought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar
04:05of the cross for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works, namely, to seek your
04:17honour with an upright and sincere heart, and to desire nothing save you alone.
04:24Grant that I may never grow weary or lukewarm in your service, but a fervent spirit, always be ever renewed
04:31within me, that I may daily be more and more inflamed to love and praise you.

14:28A reading from the Gospel according to St. Matthew chapter 22.
14:37Then the Pharisees went and had a meeting to see how they might make use of his words and to
14:43take him.
14:44They sent to him their disciples with the Herodians saying,
14:49Master, we see that you are true and that you are teaching the true way of God and have no
14:54fear of anyone,
14:55because you have no respect for a man's position.
15:00Give us then your opinion of this.
15:02Is it right to give tax to Caesar or not?
15:08But Jesus saw through them and saw their trick and said,
15:13You false ones, why are you attempting to put me in the wrong?
15:18Show me the tax money.
15:20So they gave him a penny.
15:22He said to them,
15:23Whose is this image and name on it?
15:27They said to him,
15:28Caesar's.
15:30Then he said to them,
15:32Give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's and to God the things which are God's.
15:38Hearing it they were full of wonder and went away from them.
15:44On the same day there came to him the Sadducees who say that there is no coming back from the
15:49dead.
15:50And they put a question to him saying,
15:52Master, Moses said if a man at the time of his death had no children, let his brother take his
15:58wife and get a family for his brother.
16:02Now there were among us seven brothers, and his first was married and at his death having no seed, gave
16:08his wife to his brother.
16:11In the same way the second and the third up to and including the seventh.
16:16Last of all the woman herself came to her end.
16:20When they came back from the dead, whose wife shall she be if the seventh, because they all had her.
16:28But Jesus said to them in answer,
16:31You are in error, not having any knowledge of the writings or of the power of God.
16:38For when they come back from the dead there are no wives or husbands, but they are as angels in
16:43heaven.
16:45But as far as the dead are concerned and coming back to life,
16:48have you no knowledge of what was said to you by God in the writings?
16:53I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.
16:59The God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
17:07The people, hearing it, were surprised at this teaching.
17:13But the Pharisees, hearing how the males of the Sadducees had been stopped,
17:17came together and one of them a teacher of the law,
17:19for the question to him, testing him and saying,
17:23Master, which is the chief rule of the law?
17:27Jesus said to him,
17:29Have love for the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
17:34mind.
17:35This is the first and the greatest rule.
17:38And the second is like it.
17:41Have love for your neighbour as yourself.
17:43On these two rules all the law and the prophets are faced.
17:50This is the word of the Lord.
17:53Thanks be to God.
17:59These words have two aspects.
18:01As they had, we must believe, two purposes.
18:05In the first place they were an answer to the Herodians and the Pharisees.
18:09But their question had not been an honest one.
18:14The answer was an escape from a skiltly lame trap.
18:17A path formed where his enemies fondly hoped that all pathway was cut off.
18:24But there must also be another aspect.
18:27It cannot have been related by the evangelists among the great sayings of that most solemn week,
18:32as an instance only of the adroitness in earthly human wit and malignity.
18:38It was an answer in the first place to a question asked with malicious purpose.
18:45But that question might have been asked, would have been asked in after days by some in one form or
18:51another.
18:52By some humble souls eager for guidance in real difficulty.
18:57And the answer must have been meant for them too.
19:01Should tributes be given to Caesar or not?
19:06The world as they lived in it was in the hands of heathen rulers,
19:10who had crucified the Lord of glory and who despised or persecuted his disciples.
19:16How could Christians live with such a society?
19:19Were they to submit to such rulers?
19:23And in so submitting, were they to do so cheerfully or under protest?
19:30Christ's answer may seem to us hardly to solve such difficulties.
19:34It is an answer which has often been misunderstood,
19:37and even made to teach the lesson which it was meant to unteach.
19:43The difficulty may seem to us in any particular case
19:46to be precisely the one that it does not meet.
19:50The question, what is Caesar's and what is God's?
19:55The question does not meet, the answer does not meet the difficulty directly,
20:00and yet it takes the sting from it.
20:03The sting of the question lay in the false views which men have taken of the meaning of our Lord's
20:09words,
20:10as though he had meant to distinguish two provinces,
20:13to claims, to set them as rivals fronting against one another, limited by one another.
20:21But the point of our Lord's answer was to heal and to reconcile.
20:25It is possible, indeed it is a duty to satisfy both.
20:33What is Caesar's really is what God has given to Caesar.
20:38And in satisfying that claim to the very fullest extent,
20:41we are satisfying, so far, that larger claim which exists in all our heart and life.
20:49Consider the law of love as a natural force of humanity.
20:53It will help us to understand this principle, if first we distinguish it from other principles of our nature.
21:01It is to be distinguished from the principle of will,
21:04and in some regards it is indeed to be opposed to it.
21:09Human life and the law of human life must give us personality in man,
21:13but also a being of God.
21:16The law must give us distinction without the isolation in which human life is impossible.
21:22And the law must give us union, from which all human life is a craving,
21:28without the confusion from which it shrinks.
21:31All human lives that are following the law of will and of self and of individualism
21:37are breaking life's true law and missing life's true aim.
21:44The law of love is to be distinguished from the principle of knowledge.
21:49Knowledge is not a primary factor and can never become the ultimate law of life.
21:56Knowledge shall fade away, but love never fails.
22:04The law of love is wholly opposed to the spirit of fear.
22:08Fear is not natural to man.
22:11Fear and he came to man when tempted by knowledge.
22:16He transgressed the obedience of love and having transgressed,
22:19he hid himself from the presence of God.
22:23And Adam represents us all.
22:26We hide from God because we have sinned.
22:30When we kneel at the foot of the cross and feel that because God loves us,
22:35we must love God.
22:37We learn again the law of life, the law of being.
22:40You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart
22:43and with all your mind and with all your strength
22:45and your neighbour as yourself.
22:49That is the law of God.
22:51An unbroken actual principle.
22:54It is the law of your being.
22:56Do you live it?
22:58You cannot rest without it.
23:00You cannot because it is the law of your being.
23:05God has made you to love him, to have communion with him.
23:09And in that perfect communion, the law of God is not broken.
23:13And that law is that with all your heart, with all your being,
23:17with all the powers that you have, shall you love God.
23:22Then the reason shall be linked to heaven
23:25and affection linked to heaven
23:27and conscience linked to heaven
23:29and idea, imagination and all the powers of mind and soul linked to heaven
23:34by the eternal principle of God.
23:40We also see here an exhibition of the rivalry between Pharisee and Sadducee
23:45and the stupidities that they tied themselves up in.
23:49For we read that when the Pharisees learnt that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees,
23:54instead of being glad in the silence of their mutual enemy,
23:58they tried to better their enemy by scoring a point from Jesus themselves.
24:05Do they seriously think that Jesus would allow them the comfort of falling for one of their tricks?
24:11And so they challenged Jesus on the law.
24:13Which commandment is the greatest?
24:17The reply when it came was very simple.
24:20The greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and soul.
24:27Note that this was not an actual commandment as given by Moses,
24:31but it is a sure and certain summary of the first part of that law.
24:37However, Jesus went on giving the Pharisees a second commandment,
24:43that we should love our neighbours as ourselves.
24:47Thus summarising all the rest of the law in respect of our feelings with others.
24:53And so we have two great laws.
24:56One law to concern our relationship with God,
24:59and one to concern our relationship with our fellow man.
25:05First, concerning God is simple to understand.
25:08They both are hard to put into practice.
25:12We are taught to put God at the centre of our lives.
25:17He should be the one whose word we listen to every day.
25:20The one whose will we seek out every day.
25:23The one for whose glory we work at every day.
25:27The one who we trust absolutely in all things every day.
25:32And the one we put first in our lives before all else.
25:38The second is more complicated.
25:41Love our neighbour as ourselves.
25:44Ok, so we have the parable of the Good Samaritan to show us who our neighbour is.
25:50Not just the person who lives next door,
25:53but the people we come into contact with every day.
25:58Smile at the people we meet.
26:00Help the widow who has dispelt her shopping on the gren.
26:04Offer help to the needy.
26:07The list goes on, but the key in the second part of the law is,
26:11house your soul.
26:15Is Jesus truly telling us that we must love ourselves?
26:20Is that right?
26:22Absolutely.
26:23Of course we must love ourselves.
26:27Not above others, or at the expense of others, of course.
26:30But as equals.
26:32This means that we have to look after ourselves and to have self-respect.
26:37After all, we have to be examples to others.
26:41If we have no self-respect,
26:44Jesus suggests that we simply cannot respect others by virtue of these words.
26:51Simply put, we are here to love and care for others,
26:54but not at the expense of being a doormat.
26:58Jesus does not tell us to lay ourselves down in the street
27:01that others can walk on us to cross the street without getting their feet wet.
27:08No, he calls upon us to take our neighbour's hand
27:11and to cross the street together.
27:16All too often, I come across good Christian people
27:20who allow themselves to be treated miserably by others.
27:26We are not here to be slaves of others,
27:28and we all have rights to privacy and self-respect,
27:32regardless of who we might be.
27:36But before God we are all equal.
27:39He loves us all, and so we should love each other,
27:43and that includes ourselves.
27:50Let us pray.
27:53O God, whose never-failing providence orders all things,
27:57both in heaven and on earth,
27:59we humbly beseech you to put away from us all hurtful things,
28:05and to give us those things which are profitable for us.
28:09Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
