15:25Jesus had spoken on many occasions
15:27about the hypocrisy of those
15:30to whom the teaching of the Jewish flock
15:31had been entrusted.
15:34He started this particular dialogue
15:36with a list of complaints against them.
15:39How they gave themselves airs and graces
15:42in their fancy dress.
15:43and secured for themselves
15:45the best seats in the synagogues
15:47and at banquets.
15:49Instead of practicing humility
15:51and being aware of their own sinful nature,
15:55they were interested in status
15:57and showing off,
15:58pretending to be something special
16:00when they were not and never could be.
16:06We are then told of one of their worst excesses,
16:09that of praying on the vulnerable,
16:12persuading them to pass their property
16:14over to the temple,
16:16while making personal gain from the transaction
16:19for themselves.
16:22having done this,
16:24they would stand on the corner of the street
16:25and bow and nod their heads in prayer
16:27for eternities.
16:30Not because they were repenting of their wickedness,
16:33but because they wanted to be admired as holy
16:36and men of God.
16:42So let us take a look at the giver,
16:44the widow and a poor widow at that.
16:48Sorrow often makes people selfish,
16:51but the benevolent donor in the case before us here
16:54was a widow.
16:58Look at the next at the gift.
17:02Two small mites.
17:05Wealth called the offering small.
17:07Commerce accounted it nothing.
17:10Religious custom reckoned it contemptuous.
17:13But in relation to the means of the donor
17:16and to the heart of the donor
17:18and in the judgment of God,
17:20this was a gift of exceedingly great proportions.
17:27The interest attaching to it is greatly increased
17:31by the place or the scene of the gift.
17:34It was given in the temple of God.
17:37It was deposited in one of the thirteen boxes
17:40in the women's court.
17:43It is meet right that we give where we receive.
17:47And what a place of blessing is a true house of the Lord.
17:52It is Bethel and Holy Graeme.

17:59A house of light and love,
18:01of healing and salvation and redemption.
18:07What then was the object of this gift?
18:12These two mites were given as a free will offering
18:15to the support of the temple,
18:17its institutions and its services.
18:20And the offering of them with this intent
18:24constituted this poor widow,
18:26a contributor to all that the temple yielded,
18:30to all that it offered to heaven
18:32and to all that it gave to the children of men.
18:38We should take note of the spirit of this offering.
18:41The spirit of the offering was the spirit of true piety
18:44and proper, real godliness.
18:49It may be that in her worship she had been saying,
18:52I will love you, O Lord, my strength.
18:56And that love increased by worship carried these two mites
19:01from her house to her hand
19:03and from her hand to the treasury of the Lord.
19:11Let us also notice the divine recognition of the gift.
19:16Jesus Christ saw the gift,
19:20estimated it, approved it and commended the giver.
19:27There is something to be learnt from the fact
19:30that Jesus Christ calls attention to this gift.
19:34Such lessons as these,
19:36that the greatness of a gift
19:38depends on the possessions of the individual.
19:43After the gift has been made,
19:45that gift does not hinder giving.
19:49That we may learn well-doing from each other,
19:52to act as under our great Master's eye.
19:57The spirit that led the disciples
19:59to admire the stones of the temple
20:01while Christ pointed them to the widow's offering
20:05is a spirit natural to us all.
20:08And by considering it in the passage before us,
20:11we shall reach certain facts which will guide and help us
20:15in our daily Christian life.
20:18The truths suggested by this contrast are twofold.
20:24We have the true measure of the sacrifice.
20:27Not the greatness of the outward act,
20:29but the perfection of the inward motive.
20:32We judge men's acts by their outward forms
20:36rather than by the spirit which impelled them.
20:39And we are so apt to regard only the great temple stones.
20:44In the light of the judgment day,
20:46many of the world's nations will be altered.
20:49There are unknown heroes and silent martyrs about us now,
20:54whom the world passes by.
20:57It is not the great outward act,
20:59but the perfect yielding of the soul,
21:01which constitutes the sacrifice which God will not despise.
21:09And we have the true idea of a temple.
21:13The disciples saw God's dwelling place in the house of stone,
21:17with its holy of holies and the altars of sacrifice.
21:22Christ saw it in the broken heart of the widow.
21:28This idea characterised all his teachings.
21:32It is the inner motive and the heart,
21:34as he constantly proclaimed,
21:36that God regards.
21:38And in that spirit,
21:40he must be served.
21:44So from all this arise three practical lessons.
21:48Firstly, we have a lesson of duty.
21:52Every man may become a spiritual hero.
21:56Believe that the work you are appointed to do is God's work,
21:59and you will always find scope for the heavenly spirit,
22:02and for living out the principle which Christ indicated
22:05when he pointed to the widow's mite.
22:11A lesson is a lesson of encouragement.
22:14Love God in all things.
22:17Consider no sacrifice too great or too small.
22:20So do your best in everything as in his sight,
22:23and you will find him there with you.
22:28And there is also a lesson of warning.
22:31The Jews had come to see God as only existing in the temple of Jerusalem.
22:37As a result, they became formalists,
22:40and the surrender of their soul was forgotten.
22:45And the splendid temple fell.
22:48So now and ever.
22:50Forget the divinity of all life,
22:53and the temple of your soul will become desolation.
23:00In conclusion, we read the comments of Jesus to the disciples
23:03as he sat by the offertory.
23:08The well-to-do were passing by and making sure everyone saw how much they put in,
23:13and then came this old widow with the two coins.
23:19Jesus showed his followers the true meaning of devotion to God.
23:23For the widow had put in all that she had,
23:26whereas the others with plenty kept back far more than enough for their own purposes.
23:34Again, there are things which it is good to do from time to time,
23:39such as fasting.
23:42But the one thing that we should do all the time is practice charity,
23:47showing kindness, love and compassion for our fellow human being,
23:53regardless of who or what they might be.
24:02Let us pray.
24:05Grant to us, Lord, we beseech you,
24:08the spirit to think and do always such things as be right,
24:14that we who cannot do anything that is good without you,
24:18may by you be enabled to live according to your will.
24:22Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
24:31May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil,
24:34bringing us to everlasting life.
