12:11They led Jesus away to the high priest.
12:13All the chief priests, the elders and the scribes came together with him.
12:19Peter had followed him from a distance until he came into the court of the high priest.
12:24And he was sitting with the officers, warming himself in the light of the fire.
12:30Now the chief priests and the whole council sought witnesses against Jesus to put him to death and found none.
12:37Many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony did not agree with each other.
12:44Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying,
12:48We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands.
12:52And in three days I will build another without hands.
12:57Even so their testimony did not agree.
13:03The high priest stood up in the middle and asked Jesus,
13:07Have you no answer?
13:09What is it which these testify against you?
13:14But he stayed quiet and answering nothing.
13:18And again the high priest asked him,
13:21Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
13:26Jesus said, I am.
13:30And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power,
13:33and coming with the clothes of the scar.
13:38At this the high priest saw his clothes and said,
13:41What further need do we have of witnesses?
13:44You have heard the blasphemy.
13:46What do you think?
13:49They all condemned him to be worthy of death.
13:52Some began to spit on him and to cover his face,
13:55and beat him with fists,
13:57and tell him,
13:58Prophesy!
14:00And the officers struck him with the palms of their hands.
14:05As Peter was in the courtyard below,
14:08one of the maids of the high priest came,
14:09and seeing Peter warming himself,
14:12looked at him and said,
14:14You are also with the Nazarene, Jesus.
14:18But he denied it, saying,
14:20I neither know nor understand what it is that you say.
14:25He went out on the porch,
14:26and the rooster crowed.
14:30The maids saw him,
14:31and began again to tell those who stood by,
14:34This is one of them.
14:37But again he denied it.
14:40And after a little while again,
14:42those who stood by said to Peter,
14:44You truly are one of them,
14:46for you are a Galilean,
14:48and your speech shows it.
14:51But he began to curse and to swear,
14:54I do not know the man of whom you speak.
14:59And the rooster crowed a second time.
15:03Peter remembered the word,
15:05how that Jesus had said to him,
15:06Before the rooster crows twice,
15:09you will deny me three times.
15:12And when he thought about that,
15:14he wept.
15:17This is the word of the Lord.
15:20Thanks be to God.
15:29The painful declaration of the words of the prophet,
15:33I will smite the shepherd,
15:34and this sheep will be scattered abroad.
15:38We'll find their fulfillment in them.
15:41And in all you will be offended.
15:45Rose to Peter's spirit,
15:47and with a bold but mistaken estimate
15:49of his own courage and devotion,

16:37for testing his religious character,
16:40has made demand
16:41to cause all the disciples
16:43into his sin.
16:45Men sift wheat,
16:47to reveal and separate
16:48the useless from the valuable,
16:51from the bad,
16:51the bad from the good.
16:54Such is the good end of temptation.
16:58For all to bear upon
16:59the great master himself,
17:00it was powerless.
17:01He could say,
17:03the prince of the world comes,
17:05and he hath nothing in me.
17:08There was no chaff
17:09mingled with that pure brain.
17:14Assealing Judas,
17:16alas,
17:17how little of anything

17:20In Peter,
17:21what a strange mixture,
17:23in each of us,

17:36grew twice,

17:42with an emphasis.
17:44If I must die with you,
17:46I will not deny you.
17:49The safe is ready.
17:52Peter is accosted
17:53by a woman,
17:54one of the maids
17:54of the high priest.
17:57You are with the Nazarene,
17:59even Jesus.
18:02The story is well known,
18:04and does not need repeating.
18:07The word of Jesus
18:08found its exact fulfilment.
18:11Thrice he denied,
18:12and straight away,
18:13the second time,
18:14the cock groaned.
18:16And the Lord turned
18:17and looked upon Peter.
18:20It was enough,
18:21and with broken heart
18:23he went out
18:23and wept bitterly.
18:29Let us learn
18:30of our constant liability
18:31to be tempted by evil.
18:34Go where we will,
18:35temptation will always
18:37assault us.
18:39Amidst the blessedness
18:40of Eden
18:41or the sanctities
18:42of the temple,
18:43the tempter heights.
18:47The sweetness of home,
18:49the markets of trade,
18:50the seclusion
18:51of contemplation
18:52are all as open
18:53to the evil presence
18:54as to the air of heaven.
18:57Our steps,
18:58our dogs,
18:58our life is sailed.
19:01Surely for this,
19:02for such an exposure
19:03of the precious life,
19:05sufficient justification
19:07can be given.
19:10One end of temptation,
19:12is to search out
19:12existing evil
19:13for its exposure
19:14and destruction.
19:17On the elevated plateau,
19:19over the hardened
19:20and smooth floor,
19:22the wheat is shaken
19:23from the sin.
19:24The gentle wind
19:26blows away the chaff,
19:28for which the consuming fire
19:29is prepared
19:30and the pure grain
19:31falls to the ground.
19:35Peter little knew
19:36that cowardice and fear
19:37lay lurking beneath
19:38the folds of his clothes.
19:40But temptation
19:41revealed them.
19:45As men pass the magnet
19:47through the dust
19:48to discover and separate
19:49the particles of iron
19:50from more precious metals,
19:52and those particles respond,
19:55leaping up
19:55to the attractive force,
19:58and as men test
19:59the strength of iron beams
20:01by means of heavy weights
20:02or blows,
20:03so the wily temptation
20:05tests the purity
20:06of our hearts
20:07and the strength
20:08of our principles,
20:09and draws out
20:11the lurking evil
20:12that, being exposed,
20:14may be separated
20:15before it ruins
20:16the whole life.
20:20If by temptation
20:21a weakness
20:22or flaw
20:22is discovered,
20:23our wisdom
20:24is by penitence
20:25and contrition
20:26to return
20:27for recovery
20:28and healing.
20:30We may be sadder
20:31and humbler,
20:32but we shall be
20:33much wiser.
20:37Happy for us
20:38if we have the strength
20:39to do so,
20:40and not
20:41Judas-like,
20:42in blank self-despair
20:44and self-disgust,
20:45sink to rise
20:47no more.
20:50But a further lesson
20:51is to guard
20:52against those evils
20:53which are the special
20:54cause of danger
20:55to our spiritual life.
20:58Each
20:58has its own
20:59special liability.
21:03Peter's
21:03was not
21:05covetousness.
21:06Judas was not
21:08in danger
21:08from pride of power.
21:11Our danger
21:12is always
21:13as the amount
21:13of alloy
21:14in our character.
21:15the amount
21:16of chaff
21:16amongst the wheat.
21:19Again,
21:20let us seek
21:20the removal
21:21of our own
21:22peculiar pulse
21:22by the winnowing
21:23fan and the purging
21:24fire of the spirit
21:25that we may not
21:27be exposed
21:27to the destructive
21:28surprises
21:29of sudden temptation.
21:34An additional
21:35lesson
21:35is so to guard
21:37our spiritual life
21:38that the current
21:39of our thoughts
21:40be pure.
21:41How often
21:42the coloured stream
21:43or one holding
21:44earthly salts
21:45in solution
21:46gives its own
21:47tint to the banks
21:48or determines
21:49the growths
21:50on either side.
21:51So it is for us
21:53to separate
21:54from those habits
21:55of life
21:55which are condemned
21:56by any conviction
21:58of right.
22:01the great lesson
22:02on the surface
22:03of this incident
22:04is the necessity
22:05for humility
22:06that we
22:07boast
22:09not of our
22:11religion
22:12that we presume
22:13not on our power
22:14but in lonely
22:16dependence
22:16on the strength
22:17of divine grace
22:18walking warily
22:20watching
22:21lest we enter
22:22into temptation.
22:26And they led
22:27Jesus away
22:27to the high priest
22:29so he appears
22:30before the
22:31ecclesiastical
22:32tribunal
22:33whose duty
22:34it was
22:35to see that
22:36his own laws
22:36were obeyed.
22:38He who is
22:39the true judge
22:40is arraigned
22:41before one
22:41who will prove
22:42himself to be
22:43the culprit
22:44but the accusation
22:46must be brought
22:46even though the court
22:48is an unjust one.
22:50To this end
22:51the true priest
22:51said the whole council
22:52sought witness
22:53against Jesus
22:55but their efforts
22:56were in vain
22:57for though many
22:58bore false witness
22:59against him
23:00yet their witnesses
23:02did not agree.
23:05Then with directness
23:06the high priest
23:07questioned him
23:08asking the all
23:09important question
