07:47Jesus answered if you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you
07:52give me some water to drink you would have asked him and he would have given
07:57you living water sir the woman said to him you have no bucket and the well is
08:04deep from where will you get this living water surely you're not greater than our
08:10ancestor Jacob are you for he gave us this well and drank from it himself along
08:17with his sons and his livestock Jesus replied everyone who drinks some of this
08:25water will be thirsty again but whoever drinks some of the water that I will
08:29give him will never be thirsty again but the water that I will give him will
08:35become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life the woman said
08:43to him sir give me this water so that I will not be thirsty you'll have to come
08:48back here to draw water he said to her go call your husband and come back here the
08:58woman replied I have no husband Jesus said to her you are right when you said I
09:05have no husband for you have had five husbands and the man you are living with
09:10now is not your husband this you have said truthfully the woman said to him sir I
09:19see that you are a prophet our fathers worshipped on this mountain and you
09:25people say that the place where people must worship is Jerusalem Jesus said to
09:30her believe me woman a time is coming when you will worship the father neither on
09:35this mountain nor in Jerusalem you people worship what you do not know we
09:42worship what we know because salvation is from the Jews but the time is coming
09:48and is now here when true worshippers will worship the father in spirit and
09:53truth for the father seeks such people to be his worshippers God is spirit and the
10:00people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth the woman said to him I
10:08know that Messiah is coming the one called Christ whenever he comes he will tell us
10:14everything Jesus said to her I the one speaking to you I'm he at that very moment
10:24the disciples came back and they were shocked because he was speaking with a
10:28woman however no one said what do you want or why are you speaking with him then
10:37the woman left her water jar went off into the town and said to the people see
10:42come and see a man who told me everything I ever did surely he can't be the
10:48Messiah can he and so they left the town and came out to him this is the word of the
10:55Lord thanks be to God the story of the woman in Samaria is the history of one whom Christ
11:09found a bitter ignorant sinner unless the large-hearted devoted missionary it is the
11:17experience of a soul which Christ took in hand and treated by himself it was just the center of a
11:25day's heat when there came a woman of Samaria to draw water Jesus said to her give me
11:32something to drink it was also very simple so insignificant so casual and yet to what
11:41vast results did Christ bring out that ordinary response let us notice that upon a thing so small
11:51Christ built up the salvation not only of one but of many it was the quick perception
11:58and holy use of an opportunity now here lies a great sin at the door the neglect of our
12:06opportunities and of our usefulness they are laid at our feet everywhere and if we
12:12had but taken them up we had only seen in common events the openings for influence what a different thing
12:20life
12:20would have been and what sad retrospective wasted time and of useless existence might some of
12:27us have been spared this day this is the way that Christ went to work he began with what might
12:36be
12:37called the commonplace but immediately he took it beyond the commonplace and raised it to a
12:42truer tone and a higher level that is a holy art which every follower of Christ in this world will
12:51do
12:51well to learn from his master's lips it will be a true and good resolve to determine I will try

12:59conversation worthier of my own and others being in his remark Christ took the lower ground he placed himself as

13:52consecrating motive give me to drink and see the result it is evident that Christ's method with the Samaritan was
14:03first to awaken an interest a desire a
14:07consciousness at first vague but glowing growing clearer and clearer that there was a condition beyond her which whether she
14:16had known it before or not she really required to make her happy and which if she liked she could
14:24attain
14:26well be assured of this there is some measure of hope essential to all true repentance and conversion
14:35there is a gift there is a giver a gift for the giver to give who gave them the giver
14:40to give a gift it might have been otherwise the best part of the gift is that the giver put
14:48himself into the game it is all free all to be had for the asking it is all the new
14:54And therefore, if anyone is not happy, it is either because he does not know the gift, or because he
15:00does not know the giver.
15:03The real fountain of a Christian's being is at the throne of God.
15:09It is a once crucified, but now ascendant, Jesus, for whom in glory flow all the life streams.
15:18Into the man's inmost heart come those life streams from all the wounds of the glorified Jesus.
15:25And there, like some deep reservoir, that grace of God, in communication with Christ in the heavens, is treasured above.
15:33And from there, happy thoughts, holy, purifying thoughts, thoughts of strength and wisdom, thoughts of love and self-sacrifice at
15:42heaven, thoughts of Jesus, every drop redolent of its fountain, springing up in the man.
15:53The man, the woman knew enough of this to be aware, just slightly aware, that there was something to which
16:00she was a stranger, which Jesus had to give.
16:04And which would be far better to her than all she was now working and slaving for.
16:11And hence her response, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not and neither have to come down to
16:18draw.
16:22Let us see how she stood at that boat.
16:27She had lost, or at least she was losing her confidence in her own resources.
16:33The well was no longer to her what it once was.
16:37She was thinking less, if she did not think meanly of it.
16:42And she was conscious of and was expecting, and she was longing for what she was told,
16:48and that she believed and would be satisfied.
16:53All she looked for, she saw, at the hand of him who could give it.
17:03There is advice from Jesus.
17:06God wants people to worship him in their hearts and spirits, and not in ways that can be seen.
17:13He wants total trust, not just in respect of the things we can see, but also in respect of the
17:19unseen, too.
17:22Some may call this blind faith, but I would prefer the term total faith as being more appropriate.
17:31However, it is clear that the woman was impressed with Jesus.
17:35He had told her that although at that time only the Jews could be saved under the old covenant,
17:41under the new covenant, the door would be opened to all.
17:47The woman was clearly at the cusp of belief, and rushed off to tell her friends.
17:53We should never be put off talking to someone, because of who or what we may think or know them
17:58to be.
18:04Let us pray.
18:07O God, who declares your almighty power most chiefly, in showing mercy and pity,
18:14mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace that we, running the way of your commandments,
18:20may obtain your gracious promises, and be made sharers in your heavenly treasure.
18:27Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
