10:12A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Mark, chapter 13.
10:20When you see the unclean thing which makes destruction, in the place where it has no right to be,
10:27let this be clear to the reader, that let those who are in Judea go quickly to the mountains.
10:34Let him who is on the housetop not go down or go in, to take anything out of his house.
10:42Let not him who is in the field go back to take his coat.
10:46It will be hard for women who are with child, and for her who has a baby at the breast
10:52in those days.
10:54Say a prayer that it may not be in the winter, for in those days there will be sorrow,
10:59such as has not been seen from the time God made the world until now, and will never be seen
11:05again.
11:08If the Lord had not made the time short, no flesh would have been kept from destruction.
11:13But because of the saints he has made the time short.
11:17If any man says to you, see, here is Christ, or see there, have no faith in it,
11:23because there will be false Christs and false prophets.
11:27They will give signs and wonders in the hope of turning even the saints from the true way.
11:33But take care.
11:34See, I have made all things clear to you before the time.
11:39In those days, after that time of trouble, the sun will be made dark, and the moon will not give
11:44her light.
11:46The stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers which are in the heavens will be moved.
11:51Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.
11:56He will send out the angels, and will get together his saints from the four winds,
12:01from the farthest part of the earth to the farthest part of heaven.
12:07This is the word of the Lord.
12:09Thanks be to God.
12:19Jesus continues with his warning here of the times to come and of his return.
12:25And the pictures he painted are of a truly terrible time,
12:29with the destruction of everything to be taken for granted.
12:34It is not for us to try and speculate as to how and when this will happen.
12:39For we are told that we are to remain alert and not to sleep.
12:43Not literally, of course, but not to live a life of complacency and self-comfort.
12:49When it happens, we will know.
12:53In practical terms, this means that we must live every day as though it were to be our last.
13:00Not in a worldly, pleasure-seeking way, but with a desire to make sure we have no loose ends.
13:07Let us strive to put our relationship with God on the right footing,
13:11and the relationships we have with those around us on a proper basis.
13:16Make sure there are no bad feelings between us and our fellow brothers and sisters,
13:20so that we can truly say we have no unfinished business here or there.
13:27Very clearly did our Lord see and very clearly did he explain
13:32the consequences which the Jews were bringing upon themselves
13:36by their rejection of God's Messiah.
13:39The language we see here is in itself sufficient to convince a candid mind
13:45of the justice of the claims of Jesus to be the prophet and son of the Most High.
13:51He sets us an example of the propriety of uttering truthful warnings,
13:57even though they may be painful to the speaker and unwelcome to the hearer.
14:04The severity and variety of these afflictions render the predictions
14:08one of the most awful to be met with in the whole compass of scripture.
14:16We have national disaster.
14:18It would be upon the whole nation,
14:20and especially upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
14:23the upper and the ruling classes in particular,
14:26that the retribution would fall.
14:30The temple would be desecrated.
14:34This is probably what is designated the abomination of desolation.
14:37The fanatical polluting of the temple by the zealots
14:41was doubtless one of the most distressing accompaniments
14:44of the awful siege.
14:51In times of general excitement,
14:53enthusiastic pretenders are safe to make their appearance.
14:58It was so during the utter calamity of Israel,
15:00and there is no age
15:02when the warnings of Mark 13, 21 and 22
15:07are not timely and appropriate.
15:13Several circumstances have been predicted,
15:16especially the distress in which measurable mothers
15:19could be involved,
15:20which served to deepen and darken the tone
15:23of this picture of calamity.
15:28Christ was not a mere prophet of evil.
15:32He exhibited the approaching dangers,
15:34but he provided for the safety
15:36and deliverance of those who,
15:38amidst general unfaithfulness,
15:40should be faithful to him.
15:43He directed flight from the scene of this distress.
15:46Just as Noah had been sent to the ark,
15:48and Lot had been bundled out of Sodom,
15:51so the primitive Christians were directed,
15:53when Jerusalem should be besieged,
15:57to forsake the guilty city,
15:59and take refuge as far away as possible
16:01in the mountains.
16:04There are times when flight is prudence,
16:06when life should be preserved for future service.
16:14Jesus advised disregard of impostors,
16:17for to hold to Christ alone
16:19is sufficient motive to reject the Antichrist.
16:24It is condemnation enough of any pretender
16:26that he professes to be
16:28what we know the Son of God alone can be.
16:33He cancelled general preparation and watchfulness.
16:37Take heed, he called,
16:39Christians as he used their end powers of observation,
16:42to exercise vigilance,
16:43to meet all circumstances
16:45with preparation and discretion.
16:48No piety,
16:49no attachment to the Saviour,
16:50can absolve us from our duty
16:52of using our faculties,
16:54of being upon the alert.
16:56Watch and pray.
16:58These are admissions,
17:00which are never obsolete,
17:01for the need of them is never,
17:04whilst we are here on earth,
17:06to be left behind.
17:10It is difficult exactly to discriminate
17:12between the words of Christ
17:14which refer to the destruction of Jerusalem
17:16and others which refer to our Lord's coming
17:19to judge all mankind.
17:22There seems to be a desired blending
17:24of the references to these events.
17:27We are thus taught to remember
17:28that we are called to be as men
17:30that wait for the Lord.
17:33If the words of Christ are to be accepted,
17:36this great event of the future
17:38is not to be denied or questioned.
17:40In the fulfilment of the special prediction
17:42regarding the downfall of Jerusalem,
17:45in the lifetime of the generation then living,
17:48we have the pledge
17:49of the ultimate accomplishment
17:51of the larger prophecy.
17:54At his trial,
17:55Jesus reported the assurance
17:57and his inspired apostles
17:59that foretold that he will come again
18:01the second time without sin
18:03unto salvation.
18:08The date of our Lord's return
18:10is known only to the Father.
18:12If neither the angels
18:14nor the Son himself
18:15could communicate this knowledge,
18:16how ridiculous and presumptuous
18:18is the conduct of those
18:20who, treating the Scriptures
18:22as a riddle,
18:23profess to have discovered the secret
18:25and perforged their own
18:26fanciful ideas and follies
18:28as to the declaration
18:30of the oracles of God.
18:32It is wisely hidden from us
18:34and we show our wisdom
18:36by consenting acquiescence
18:39in ignorance.
18:43Changes on earth and in heaven
18:45are indications of the approaching day.
18:48As the leaves of the fig tree
18:50tell us that summer is with us,
18:52so events will occur
18:53which to the understanding mind
18:55will herald our Lord's return.
18:58Yet even these events
19:00do not tell us
19:00when our Saviour shall appear.
19:03But since they remind us
19:04that he is nearby,
19:06they answer the purpose,
19:08for they put us on our guard
19:09and admonish us
19:11and admonish us
19:12to be prepared.
19:16Heedfulness and observation,
19:19watchfulness and prayer
19:21are essential for us
19:23in preparation for his coming.
19:28There can be no doubt
19:30as to the impression
19:31made by these
19:31and similar instructions
19:33and admonitions
19:34uttered by the Lord Jesus
19:35toward the close
19:36of his ministry.
19:39It was understood
19:40by all his disciples
19:41that the Master
19:42in leaving the world
19:43retained his hold
19:45upon the world's
19:45heart and conscience.
19:48It was currently believed
19:50in the early church
19:50as it has been believed
19:52ever since by all Christians
19:54that the Lord will come again
19:55and take account of his servants
19:57and especially will inquire
19:59into the way they have acted
20:00as his representatives
20:02and ministers amongst men.
20:04Hence the stress
20:06which has always been laid
20:07upon the duty to watch.
20:10The apostles not only obeyed,
20:12they repeated the commandments
20:14of their Lord.
20:16Peter admonished his readers
20:18be therefore sober
20:20and watch in prayer.
20:23John tells us
20:24blessed is he that watches.
20:28Paul exhorted
20:29watch, stand fast in your faith,
20:32be strong.
20:34The very names
20:35which the early Christians
20:36gave to themselves
20:37and their children
20:38may be taken
20:39as an indication
20:40of the prevailing tone of being.
20:44Gregory amongst the Greeks
20:46and Vigilantius
20:47amongst the Latins
20:48both signify
20:50simply
20:50watcher.
20:54We are to consider
20:55from whom this charge
20:57proceeds.
20:59It is the word
21:00of the all-wise
21:01and of the one
21:02of unique authority.
21:04Coming from Christ
21:05this is not counsel
21:06but a command.
21:08the general
21:09has the right
21:09to station a guard
21:10a sentry
21:11and to expect
21:12vigilance
21:13and fidelity.
21:16The occasion
21:17of the charge
21:17here
21:18gives it a peculiar
21:19power of sacredness.
21:22It was when
21:23the Lord Jesus
21:24was leaving his house
21:25to use the figurative
21:27language of the text
21:28to go and live
21:29in another country
21:31while I was with them
21:32were his words
21:33in prayer
21:34I kept them
21:35in your name
21:36now I come
21:37to you.
21:39How can we do otherwise
21:41than attach
21:41a special force
21:42of obligation
21:43to what our Master
21:44said when he was
21:45about to leave
21:46this world
21:46for the salvation
21:48of whose inhabitants
21:49he had lived
21:50and was a bed
21:50to die.
21:54Look at the charge
21:55itself.
21:56He gives to each
21:57one of us
21:57his work
21:58all his people
21:59are his servants
22:00all have a task
22:01to accomplish

22:03to render
22:03an office
22:04to fill
22:05and everyone
22:06has his own work
22:07for which he is
22:08individually qualified
22:10and which is committed
22:11to him
22:12and to no other.
22:14It is a practical
22:15and elevating view
22:16of the Christian life
22:17this which is here
22:19given to us
22:21all whom Christ
22:22saves and redeems
22:23he commissions
22:24and consecrates
22:26and so long as
22:27we live here
22:28on earth
22:28we have a duty
22:29to fulfill
22:30a work
22:31to do.
22:32He invests
22:33each of us
22:34with the appropriate
22:35authority.
22:36There must be
22:37in every community
22:38a source of power
22:39a ruling mind
22:41the father
22:42in a family
22:43the magistrate
22:44or the king
22:44in a state.
22:46In the church
22:47of the Lord Jesus
22:48he himself is paid
22:49the lawgiver
22:50the fountain of honour
22:52the judge
22:53and yet he gives
22:55authority
22:55not making
22:56an order of men
22:57lords over his heritage
22:58but authorising
23:00every servant
23:01to fulfil
23:01his own duties.
23:03The bishop rules
23:05the teacher teaches
23:06the evangelist
23:07preaches
23:07every member
23:09of the congregation
23:10fulfils his duties
23:11at the bidding
23:13and by the authority
23:14of the Lord.
23:16This conviction
23:17should give dignity
23:18and devotedness
23:19to our daily toil.
23:21We are where
23:22the Lord has placed us
23:23we are doing
23:24what he commands
23:25and he requires
23:27each one
23:27to watch.
23:29Working and watching
23:30go together
23:31for Christians
23:32are like the Jews
23:33in the time of Nehemiah
23:35who built the walls
23:36of Jerusalem
23:37while they were armed
23:38and not their guard
23:39against the foe.
23:41Our master
23:42has left us
23:43in the midst of dangers
23:44not to depress
23:45our courage
23:46but to quicken
23:47our vigilance.
23:49This duty devolves
23:51especially upon
23:51the porter
23:52and the janitor.
23:53The house contains
23:55precious treasures
23:56and it must not be allowed
23:57to every stranger
23:58to enter
23:59lest the master's property
24:01be stolen
24:01and the careless keepers
24:03dispossessed
24:04and the house
24:05occupied by the foe.
24:06All must watch
24:08that at the Lord's return
24:09it may appear
24:10that his charge
24:12has been kept
24:12and his possessions
24:14have been faithfully guarded.
24:18And while we look back
24:19to the Lord's departure
24:20and his solemn injunctions
24:22and his sacred trust
24:23we also look forward
24:25to his return
24:26according to his prophet.
24:29Our Lord's second coming
24:30was declared by him
24:32under many figures
24:33each having its own shade
24:34of spiritual meaning
24:35and practical prophet.
24:38He is a householder
24:40who will come
24:40to take account
24:41of his servants
24:42a proprietor
24:43who will come
24:44to learn
24:45how his agents
24:46have traded
24:46and what they have
24:47gained on his behalf
24:49a king
24:50who will come
24:50to make inquiry
24:51into the conduct
24:52of his citizens
24:53and the great
24:54and great officers
24:55of state
24:57and lastly
24:58he is judge
24:59who will come
25:00to summon
25:01the people
25:01before his tribune.
25:05At the same time
25:06the timing
25:07of the Lord's return
25:08is hidden from us
25:09and we are informed
25:11that to the unprepared
25:12it will be sudden
25:13and unexpected.
25:15Men have been
25:16presumptuous enough
25:17to foretell
25:18with foolish confidence
25:19what neither angel
25:20nor the very son
25:22of God himself
25:23could communicate.
25:25Again and again
25:26in the course
25:26of history
25:27there have been
25:28outbreaks
25:28of millennial
25:29fanaticism
25:31but it is easy
25:32to see
25:32why the clothes
25:33of the
25:34should be reserved
25:37as a secret
25:38in the father's mind.
25:41Had the church
25:42been told
25:43that the advent
25:43was near
25:44Christians
25:45would have been
25:46unfitted
25:46for the sober
25:47discharge
25:47of the duties
25:48of life
25:49and the church
25:50been assured
25:51that it would
25:51remote
25:52such an assurance
25:53would have prompted
25:54both sloth
25:54and negligence.
25:58And yet
25:59we all live
25:59under a sense
26:00of the nearness
26:01of the Lord's return.
26:03The personal interest
26:04to us
26:04of that return
26:05lies in the glory
26:07of Christ's kingdom
26:08and in the acknowledgement
26:09of our own faithfulness.
26:11This life
26:12we know
26:12is short
26:13and the day
26:14of our account
26:14is not far off
26:16and Christ
26:17would have us live
26:18as though he had
26:19but gone from us
26:20for a season
26:21and were about
26:22again
26:23to come to us.
26:27We have spoken
26:28of the past
26:28and of the future
26:29of the charge
26:30given by our Lord
26:31whilst yet on earth
26:33and of the prospect
26:34of our Lord's
26:34return from heaven
26:36but those aspects
26:38of our faith
26:38bear upon the life
26:40and duty
26:40of today.
26:43Work
26:44whatever your hand
26:45finds to do
26:46do it with all
26:47your might.
26:48Now while the strength
26:50of body
26:50and mind
26:50are continued
26:51labour for the Lord
26:52who lived
26:53and died for you.
26:54Now
26:55while you have
26:56control of your property
26:57rise it as stewards
26:59of God.

27:01while you have
27:02influence over your
27:03domestic and social circle
27:04use that influence
27:05for Christ.
27:07Ministers of the gospel
27:08parents
27:09and teachers
27:10of youth
27:10officers of congregation
27:12followers of Jesus
27:14in every position
27:15of life
27:15be it yours
27:16to work
27:17for the Lord
27:17you love
27:18and honour.
27:19Today is yours
27:21tomorrow
27:21may be too late.
27:26Pray
27:26this you will do
27:27if you realise
27:29your dependence
27:29for spiritual impulse
27:30and power
27:31upon the great source
27:32of spiritual grace
27:34and blessing.
27:36So far
27:37from there being
27:37any inconsistency
27:38between work
27:39and prayer
27:40the two
27:40blame
27:41in perfect harmony.
27:42Prayer without work
27:43is mockery
27:44work without prayer
27:45is mechanical
27:46and powerless.
27:49Watch
27:50that is
27:51keep guard
27:51over yourself

27:53an attitude
27:54of expectation
27:55and the feeling
