00:23Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who from the cross looked in upon your mother, overwhelmed with
00:34grief and tears, and so truly took compassion on her sorrow, commending her to the care of your disciple John,
00:43as also you commended John, and in him, all of us, to her maternal care.
00:50Grant me to love and honour your mother with the purest and most ardent love, that I may have her
00:57for my mother and be worthily acknowledged by her as her son.
01:02Grant that in every necessity, and especially at the hour of my death, I may find her ever present and
01:09at hand to help me.
01:13Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who with your wounds gaping and your head crowned with thorns,
01:21while hanging in misery upon the cross, declared that you were without any consolation.
01:29Grant that in all adversity and times of temptation and desolation, I may fly with faith to you, my most
01:37holy Father, and putting no confidence in myself, grant that I may place all my hopes in you alone, and
01:44entirely resign myself and trust in you.
01:48Wound my innermost soul with the remembrance of your wounds, write and imprint them upon my heart, satiate me wholly
01:57with your blood, that all my intentions may be fixed in you alone, and that I may seek and find
02:03and hold you fast, possessing you for ever and ever.
02:09Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when your body was exhausted from the loss of blood,
02:16gasped for breath, and cried out on the cross that you were tormented with thirst, while you burnt with unspeakable
02:23desire for our salvation.
02:27Give me grace to thirst most ardently after your honour and the salvation of souls, and be ready cheerfully to
02:35spend myself for them, according to your will.
02:40Grant that no love of any transitory object may possess my soul, that I may never attach myself to any
02:47creature, and that even when I am bound to love, I may love only in you.
02:53But give me grace to love you above all, and with my whole soul, and quietly to rest in you.
03:02Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were thirsty, even at the point of death,
03:09permitted a sponge filled with vinegar to be offered to you, and that by tasting this, you might make satisfaction
03:17for our gluttony, giving us an example of poverty.
03:22Grant me the grace to despise any unlawful pleasure and delight, and to avoid any excess in eating and drinking,
03:29and may I use with moderation and thanksgiving, whatever you do give me for the support of my poor body.
03:38So cleanse, I beg you, the taste of my heart, that it may relish nothing except that which is pleasing
03:44to you, and may find nothing but bitterness in whatever displeases you.
03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, you, the greatest lover of the human race, who, when you
03:58were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close, brought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar
04:05of the cross for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works, namely, to seek your
04:17honour with an upright and sincere heart, and to desire nothing save you alone.
04:23Grant that I may never grow weary or lukewarm in your service, but a fervent spirit always be ever renewed
04:31within me, that I may daily more be more and more inflamed to love and praise you.
04:38Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who willingly underwent death, when commending yourself to your Father,
04:46and bending your adorable head, you gave up the ghost, and thus, by laying down your life for your sheep,
04:54showed yourself to be the Good Shepherd.
05:00You are dead, only begotten Son of God, you are dead, my beloved one, that I may live for ever.
05:06What hope, what confidence is laid up for me in your death and in your blood.
05:11I glorify you, I give you thanks as far as in me lies.
05:15Give me grace to die entirely, to sin, and all evil desires, and to live to you alone.
05:23May I think of you alone, may my understanding exercise.
05:26Itself in nothing except you, that, clad in your grace and with holy charity, I may soon after the close
05:35of this life come to you, the true paradise.
05:39O good Jesus, by your bitter passion and death, grant to me the living pardon and grace, and to the
05:46faithful departed rest and everlasting light.
05:50For his honour and glory be to you, O Christ, at his death the sun withdrew its light, and the
05:58veil of the temple was divided in two.
06:01May the earth quaked, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were cut, and the graves opened.
06:07May the rays of your grace never leave me, I beg you, you son of righteousness.
06:14You that are my God, may they always lighten, even the very inmost recesses of my heart, that I may
06:22joyfully serve you for ever.
06:25Tear away from me the veil of hypocrisy.
06:27Make the ground of my soul quake with saving penitence.
06:32Rend in tomb this heart of stone of mine, that, being wholly renewed within, I may despise anything perishable, and
06:41love only the things that are of heaven.
06:45Amen.
06:49O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
07:01O be joyful in the Lord, holy land, serve the Lord with gladness, and come in all his prayers and
07:16triggers on.
07:18Be sure that the Lord, he is God.
07:24Be sure that the Lord, he is God.
07:30We are his people and the sheep of his past.
07:47ZANG EN MUZIEK
08:06and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
08:20Glory be to the Father, and to the Father, and to the Holy Ghost,
08:31as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
09:04Amen.
09:26Amen.
09:27Amen.
09:35Amen.
09:56Amen.
10:00Amen.
10:43A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke.
10:52Now when the days drew near for him to be taken up, Jesus set out resolutely to go to Jerusalem.
11:00He sent messengers on ahead of him, and as they went along, they entered a Samaritan village
11:07to make things ready in advance for him.
11:10But the villagers refused to welcome him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem.
11:19Now when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, do you want us to call fire
11:26to come down from heaven and consume them?
11:29But Jesus rebuked them, and they went on to another village.
11:35As they were walking along the road, someone said to him, I will follow you wherever you go.
11:43Jesus said to him, foxes have dens, and the birds in the sky have nests, but the Son of Man
11:51has no place to lay his head.
11:55Jesus said to another, follow me.
11:59But he replied, Lord, let me first go and bury my father.
12:05But Jesus said to him, let the dead bury their undead, but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom
12:13of God.
12:16And yet another said, I will follow you, Lord.
12:20But first, let me say goodbye to my family.
12:25Jesus said to him, no one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the
12:33kingdom of God.
12:35This is the word of the Lord.
12:39Thanks be to God.
12:46We have in today's Gospel reading some of the more memorable incidents of our Lord's last journey to Jerusalem.
12:58Very solemnly and very sweetly does St. Luke introduce the reference to his passion.
13:07When the time was come that he should be received up.
13:13It mitigates the bitterness of his Lord's sufferings and death, looking on, as it thus does, to the issue and
13:22the end,
13:22to the taking up of Christ into heaven, to his reception in his heavenly home and into his Father's glory.
13:35We begin with an insult.
13:39He sent messengers before his face as harbingers to see that word in its most proper sense.
13:47And they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him.
13:54And they did not receive him because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
14:02This refusal of theirs was no piece of ordinary inhospitality, such as Samaritans were wont to show to Galilean pilgrims
14:12on their way to the feasts at Jerusalem.
14:16It was not merely as such a pilgrim that they shut their doors against him.
14:22For this is what we must remember was Christ's solemn progress from Galilee to Judea as Messiah.
14:33With these messengers everywhere announcing him as such.
14:39But as the Samaritans considered it, a Messiah going to Jerusalem to observe the feasts there, did by his very
14:47act proclaim that he was no Messiah.
14:51For on Gerizim, they believed, the patriarchs of old had worshipped, consecrating it to be the holy mountain of God,
15:00which therefore and not Jerusalem, the Christ when he came, would recognise and honour as the central point of all
15:10true religion.
15:14The sons of Zebedee were probably with the Lord when the tidings were brought back from the village, which, refusing
15:22to receive him, had missed the opportunity of entertaining, not merely angels, but the Lord of angels himself, unawares.
15:33Upon this provocation, all their suppressed and smouldering indignation against the schismatics, through whose territory they were journeying, broke out.
15:46At this insistence of contempt, shown to their Lord and to themselves, for no doubt a feeling of personal slight,
15:56mingled with their indignation, however little they may have been aware of it themselves.
16:02The sons of thunder would play Old Testament parts.
16:08They feel that a greater man than Elias is here, for they are fresh from the Mount of the Transfiguration,
16:15where they had seen the glory of Moses and Elias paled before the brighter glory of him whom they served
16:22this day.
16:24And outrage against him and the rejection of him should therefore not be less terribly avenged.
16:34With all of carnal and sinful which mingled with this proposal of theirs, yet what insight into the dignity of
16:42the Lord and the greatness of the outrage directed against him, it reveals the faith in the mighty powers which
16:51he was able to equip his servants.
16:54And yet it might almost seem as though with all this confidence of theirs, there was a latent and lurking
17:00sense upon their part of a certain unfitness in this their proposal.
17:08And thus, out of no desire to intrude into their Lord's office, but only out of a feeling that this
17:15avenging act might not only become him, they proffered themselves as the executor of this judgment.
17:25It would become the servants, though it might not perfectly become the Lord.
17:39You are missing, Christ would say, your true position, which is, having been born of the spirit of forgiving love,
17:50to be ruled by that spirit, and not by the spirit of avenging righteousness.
17:56You are losing sight of the old covenant and the new, missing the greater glory of the latter, and that
18:04it is the higher blessedness to belong to it.
18:10It is necessary for us to see clearly that there is no slight cast here of the spirit of Elias.
18:18Both spirits, both spirits, that which are breed through and informed of the prophets and saints of the old covenant,
18:25as well as that which should inform the disciples of the new, are all divine.
18:33The difference between them is not one of opposition, but one of time and degree.
18:39The spirits of the Old Testament were spirits of avenging righteousness.
18:43God was teaching men his holiness by terrible things in righteousness.
18:51But within the new covenant, not contrary but brighter, is that of forgiving love.
19:00In it, he is overcoming man's evil with his good.
19:04Each economy has one predominating tone from which it takes its character.
19:12The two apostles were, for the moment, failing to recognise this, in a confusion of old and new, and not
19:20knowing of what manner of spirit they were.
19:24They had fallen back on the rudiments of God's education of his people, when it was their privilege to go
19:30on into perfection,
19:32and to teach the world the far greater might of meekness, humility and love.
19:41In their missing of all this, there was a fault and matter of blame, and yet the blame by no
19:47means so severe as some are inclined to find.
19:51They were rebuked for choosing that which, whilst perfectly good in its own time, was only not good now, because
19:59a better had come,
20:01for returning to the lower level of the old covenant when Christ had lifted them up,
20:07if only they had understood this, to the higher level of the new.
20:15The manifold wisdom of Christ, which displayed itself in his drawing and attaching of souls to himself,
20:21by ways the most different, most often fell us with devout admiration.
20:30Perhaps it may never fill us more than with this instance, when there are brought before us, in quick succession,
20:38moral and spiritual conditions, with much apparent similarity,
20:44which yet are most diversely treated by him, such as we have in today's reading.
20:51There were here three, who, either in their own interpretation or in the Lord's,
20:56are candidates for admission into the inner circle of disciples.
21:03That is, into the circle, not of those who would receive the truth merely,
21:10but as Christ's actual witnesses, who should be actively employed in imparting the knowledge of what that truth had to
21:20others.
21:25There came a scribe, and his words sounded fairly,
21:29Master, I will follow thee wherever you go.
21:34They remind us a little of the great-hearted words of Ittai to David.
21:41Surely, in what place my Lord the King shall be, whether in life or death,
21:46even there also will your servant be.
21:492 Samuel 15, 21
21:53Nor is there any reason to suppose that this hopeful of discipleship,
22:00and to which all discipleship might involve,
22:03meant at the time otherwise than he spoke.
22:06And yet, there is not in him that true devotion to Christ,
22:12which would otherwise lead him to follow that Lord,
22:16in this world, that is, in the world to come.
22:20He shall be free to follow him wherever he goes.
22:25Revelation 14, 4
22:29These words have more in them of Peter's confident assertion.
22:34Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death.
22:38Chapter 22, verse 33
22:42At all events, they inspire him, who, knowing all things, knew what was in man.
22:47And no greater confidence than those other words of Peter hereafter should do,
22:53for not welcoming the volunteer, but rather repelling.
22:58For he answered,
22:59The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests,
23:04but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
23:09In other words, you look for worldly commodities through the following of me.
23:15In this, you will be disappointed.
23:18These, my followers cannot have, since they are not mine.
23:24The Son of Man is both homeless and houseless on this earth.
23:30Nor does this answer of Christ come out to us in all its depths of meaning,
23:34until we realise that hour, when upon the cross he bowed his head,
23:40not having where to lay it,
23:42and having bowed it, gave up the ghost.
23:47Whether this scribe withdrew and went away, we are not told.
23:52That we did withdraw is certainly the impression left upon our minds.
23:57But whatever was the outcome,
24:00the reply of Christ was not meant merely and only to repel.
24:05It was intended rather to throw back this candidate for the honours of discipleship
24:10on a deeper heart-searching.
24:13And that having made these, he might either fall off altogether,
24:17or else he might attach himself more securely to the Lord
24:21in quite a different spirit from that in which he made the offer we read of today.
24:29Having checked one, our Lord incited another.
24:33For he knew there was more truth in the backwardness of him
24:37to whom he addresses himself now,
24:40than in the forwardness of the previous man.
24:45He has for him that significant follow me,
24:49which he had also had for Philip,
24:52a Matthew, an Andrew, or a Peter.
24:57It is in answer to such a summons that this one replied,
25:00Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.
25:05This may mean,
25:07My father lies dead.
25:09Suffer me before I attach myself to you
25:12to render last offices of pity to him.
25:17And Christ's answer we may interpret as implying,
25:21The spiritually dead,
25:23those who are not quickened,
25:25as you have been with the spirit of a new life,
25:28are yet sufficient for the fulfilling of this office,
25:31which would now call you away from me,
25:34namely the burying of the naturally dead.
25:39They can perform it as well as you,
25:41and under the present circumstances,
25:43you should be contented to leave it to them.
25:49Where duties come into conflict,
25:51sacred duties,
25:53such as that which this man pleaded,
25:55must give way to those more sacred yet.
26:00Christ has said to this man,
26:02Follow me,
26:04so that now the old saying held good,
26:08Whoso loveth father or mother more than me,
26:11is not worthy of me.
26:15And then Christ justified his withdrawal of the man
26:18from attendance on the dead.
26:21He had a fitness for work,
26:24which, if not directly with the living,
26:26was as yet with those who were capable
26:28of being made alive.
26:31Go and preach the kingdom of God.
26:35As though he had said,
26:37Yours is another task,
26:39namely to spread far and wide
26:41the glad tidings of life,
26:43which, as many as shall hear,
26:46shall live.
26:47One of my royal priesthood,
26:49a Nazarite of mine,
26:51having fellowship with me,
26:53whom am the life.
26:56Thy occupation is henceforth
26:58with the living,
26:59and not with the dead.
27:05A third man offered himself for discipleship,
27:09and he had to this with conditions
27:11and craving time for farewells,
27:14which he would prefer to say first.
27:18He too would learn
27:20that there was no dallying
27:21with a heavenly vocation,
27:22that then,
27:24when this has reached a man,
27:26there is no room left in him
27:27for conferring with flesh and blood.
27:31As to the king's daughter of old,
27:34the word of that precept has come.
27:37Forget also your own people
27:39and your father's house.
27:40Psalm 45, 10
27:44While, as it may only too easily prove,
27:48his worst foes,
27:51those who will most effectively
27:53keep him back from God,
27:55may be those of his own household.
27:58Matthew 10, 36 and 37
28:02The Lord, therefore,
28:03will give no allowance to his request,
28:05shutting down once and for all
28:08dangerous delays and interludes
28:10between the offer of service
28:11and the actual undertaking of it.
28:15He who holds the plough
28:17must never look behind him,
28:18for if he does,
28:20he spoils the furrow
28:21and mars the work
28:23which he has undertaken.
28:26The discipleship of Christ
28:28is such a putting of the hands
28:30to the plough.
28:32For it is the breaking up
28:33of the hard soil in our hearts,
28:35for the breaking up
28:36of the hard soil
28:37in the hearts of others.
28:41This image gives us
28:42the laboriousness of the work
28:44better than the more usual
28:46image of sowing
28:48and, so to speak,
28:49carries us a step further back
28:51in the spiritual husbandry.
28:55But he who,
28:56having put his hand to the plough,
28:58began well,
29:00shall afterwards.
29:04Christ does not say
29:05turn back,
29:07but even so much as
29:09look back.
29:11In token,
29:13that his heart is
29:13other way
29:14than in the task
29:16in front.
29:17He may still have his hand
29:19on the plough,
29:20but having fallen away
29:22in heart and affection
29:23from his work,
29:24he will trace
29:26no straight furrow.
29:27He breaks not
29:29aright
29:29any fallow ground.
29:31He is not fit,
29:32or rather
29:33is of no service
29:34and profit
29:35for the kingdom of God.
29:40Indeed,
29:40unless kept
29:41to his work
29:42as a hireling servant,
29:44it is likely
29:45that he will presently
29:46leave the plough
29:47in the half-drawn
29:47furrow
29:48and be found
29:49to have exchanged
29:50toil and exposure
29:52abroad
29:52for the comforts
29:54and ease
29:55of his own hearth
29:56and home
29:57once more.
29:58the fright of God
30:06can be found
30:06in the long
30:07of his life.
30:17We praise you, O God,
30:20in our t ums
30:22to be our Lord,
30:25All year now worship to the Father ever I have seen
30:33Through all angels try out the gladness of God's glory
30:41Through his servant and his servant in a tenderly new pride
30:50Through yourselves and through all angels try out thecü things of God's glory
31:05Through his servant and his servant and his servant in a tenderly new pride
31:12Through his servant and his servant in a tenderly new pride
31:29ZANG EN MUZIEK
31:49In glory, O Christ, you are the everlasting Son of the Father.
32:00When you do want yourself to be delivered again,
32:07you want yourself to be born of a virgin.
32:12When you do want yourself to be delivered again,
32:19you are the everlasting Son of the Father.
32:26You stand the right hand of God in the glory of the Father.
32:36We believe that you will come to me, our God.
32:47We ever may use love for servants,
32:53would you ever be here in your precious blood?
32:59May death be of birth with all saints in glory everlasting.
33:11O Lord, Savior, we all have blessed your heritage.
33:18Our death will come up forever.
33:23May day by day we magnify you,
33:29and we worship your name forever and ever.
33:37As the Lord's peace is saved without sin,
33:44O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us.
33:52O Lord, have mercy upon us, as our trust is in you.
34:01O Lord, if you have mercy upon us,
34:04that we never be our God.
34:18Grant, O merciful God, that in the same way that your holy apostle St. James,
34:25leaving his father and all that he had without delay,
34:30was obedient to the calling of your son Jesus Christ and followed him.
34:35So we also, forsaking all worldly and carnal affection,
34:42may be ever more ready to follow your holy commandments.
34:46Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
34:49Amen.
34:55May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil,
34:59bringing us to everlasting life.
35:02Amen.
