00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when standing before Pilate, kept silent at all the unjust
00:34accusations and slanders of the Jews, and as a gentle lamb that did not open its mouth, did not contradict
00:42them when they brought forward their charges against you.
00:46Give me grace never to be disturbed by the false accusations of others, but may I overcome every injury by
00:53silence and meekness.
00:55Give me the grace of perfect humility, so that I may never desire praise nor refuse any measure of contempt.
01:04Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, you, lamb without spot, against whom the pious Pharisees and scribes
01:14raged with obstinate hatred.
01:17For although Pilate testified that he found no cause of death in you, yet they would not be satisfied with
01:24anything except your death.
01:28Grant me grace to imitate your innocence and patience, that I may both lead a godly life, and for so
01:36doing, if I am spoken of evenly, that I may remain at rest in you, giving way to no indignation,
01:45but giving thanks to you in all adversity.
01:50Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who will lead in the greatest of indignity, in the manner
01:59of a wicked criminal, through the middle of the city, from one judgment seat to another, and from Pilate to
02:06Herod and back again, amidst the noise and shouts of the people.
02:11Give me grace never, nor to be exasperated by slander, nor to be exasperated by slander, may I never feel
02:20any false shame at being despised, but may I receive everything in meekness, and endure all things in silence for
02:28your honor, that, by the assistance of your grace, I may in patience possess my soul.
02:36Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when Herod asked you many vain and foolish questions, and
02:44when you were falsely wounded in different ways by priest and scribe, humbly kept a meet and becoming silence, give
02:54me grace to restrain my tongue in a manner well-pleasing to you.
02:58Do not permit me to utter hurtful words, do not permit me to be taken up with fruitless stories, but
03:05give me grace to say what is right, profitable, and honest, according to your will.
03:13May I abhor the sin of evil speaking, and be always glad to think and speak well of any man.
03:23Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who condemned by your silence the foolish curiosity of Herod, and
03:31who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of any miracle, because he did not have his own
03:39salvation at heart,
03:41and did there in this way teach us to avoid all ostentation before the great ones of this world.
03:49Pour into my heart a spirit of deep humility, mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory.
03:58Grant that I may never do anything in order to gain praise of man, but may always act with a
04:04single eye upon the glory of your most holy name,
04:07and may come before you day by day in a true spirit of humility and meekness.
04:18Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who didn't refuse to be set to nothing by Herod and
04:24his men of war,
04:26nor to be clothed in a white garment and to be mocked and laughed at as though a fool and
04:31a madman.
04:32Give me grace, O Lord, to choose rather to be an outcast with you than to be glorious in the
04:38world.
04:39May I think it better and more honorable to suffer reproach for your name than to prosper in the vain
04:46honors of the world.
04:49Give me grace that, truly acknowledging my own sins and my own unworthiness,
04:54I may be as nothing in my own sight, but may always despise and accuse myself and daily lament over
05:03my own weakness and wretchedness.
05:06Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who was sent back with shame, clothed in a false garment,
05:12from Herod the Pilate,
05:13and in all things obeyed your enemies going backwards and forwards according to their pleasure.
05:20Grant that I may not shrink from being despised, nor refuse obedience even to those who wish nothing but bad
05:29for me.
05:31Give me grace to have no feelings for the things of this world, but to think of and care for
05:36and love you alone.
05:39May you alone be my honor, my delight, my love, my glory, and my joy.
05:46Amen.
05:49O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:02O be joyful in the Lord, holy man, serve the Lord with gladness, and come in all these prayers and
06:16thrillers home.
06:18O be joyful in the Lord, holy man, serve the Lord with gladness, and come in all these prayers andidelers
06:43home.
06:43And in truth is God's great praise
06:49Be thankful unto him and speak full of his name
06:57For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting
07:06And his truth endures from generation to generation
07:20Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost
07:31As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be
07:41World without end, Amen
07:58Sing with mercy unto God, O strength
08:04Make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob
08:11Take the suffering, feel the first reference
08:17The merry heart with the loose
08:22Love of the trumpets in the new womb
08:28Even in the time appointed
08:32And upon a sudden facing
08:38For this was made a statue of Israel
08:44And the law of the God of Jacob
08:52This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony
08:59When he came out of the land of Egypt
09:04And his hands were delivered from making the most
09:24Thou callest upon me in trouble
09:39I proved thee also as the waters of strife
09:48Hear, O my people, and I will not show thee
09:54For this heaven, thou wilt thou come
10:00For this heaven, thou wilt thou come
10:01To me
10:03There shall no strange God be in thee
10:09I am not shalt thou worship any other God
10:17I am the Lord thy God
10:21Who brought the hearts of the land of Egypt
10:27Open thy mouth wide and I shall fill it
10:34But my people would not hear my voice
10:41And Israel would not obey me
10:46So I gave them up unto them, O God's lost
10:55And let them follow their lonely mighty nations
11:04All that my people would have held unto thee
11:10For Israel had walked in my ways
11:18I should soon have pushed on their enemies
11:25And start my hand against their adversaries
11:34For his hands of the Lord should have been found
11:40But their time should have been to forever
11:49He should have fed them also with the finest reason
11:57And with honey out of the snow
12:01And watch for thy heart satisfied me
12:09Glory be to the Father
12:13And to the Son
12:16And to the Holy Ghost
12:20As it was in the beginning
12:24It's now and ever shall be
12:29But without end
12:34Amen
12:46A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke chapter 12
12:52Meanwhile, when a multitude of many thousands had gathered together
12:56So much so that they trampled on each other
12:59He began to tell his disciples first of all
13:04Beware the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy
13:08For there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed
13:11Nor hidden that will not be known
13:14Therefore whatever you have said in darkness
13:16Will be heard in the light
13:19What you have spoken in the ear
13:21In the inner room
13:22Will be proclaimed from the housetop
13:26I tell you, my friends
13:27Do not be afraid of those who kill the body
13:29And after that they have nothing more that they can do
13:33But I warn you
13:34Whom you should fear
13:35Fear him who, after he has killed
13:38Has the power to cast into Gehenna
13:42Yes, I tell you, fear him
13:44Aren't five sparrows sold for two coins
13:47Not one of them is forgotten by God
13:51But the very hairs of your head are all counted
13:53Therefore do not be afraid
13:55You are of more value than many sparrows
13:59I tell you
14:00Everyone who confesses me before men
14:03Him will the Son of Man also confess before the angels of God
14:08But he who denies me in the presence of men
14:11Will be denied in the presence of the angels of God
14:15Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man
14:18Will be forgiven
14:19But those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit
14:22Will not be forgiven
14:25When they bring you before the synagogues
14:27The rulers and the authorities
14:29Do not be anxious how or what you will answer
14:32Or what he will say
14:34For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that same hour
14:37What you must say
14:41One of the multitude said to him
14:43Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me
14:48But he said to him
14:50Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?
14:54He said to them
14:56Beware, keep yourselves from covetousness
14:58For a man's life does not consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses
15:04He spoke a parable to them saying
15:07The ground of a certain rich man produced abundantly
15:11He reasoned within himself saying
15:13What will I do because I don't have room to store my crops
15:18This is what I will do
15:20I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones
15:23And there I will store all my grain and my goods
15:28I will tell my soul
15:30Soul, you have goods laid up for many years
15:33Take your ease, eat, drink and be merry
15:37But God said to him
15:38You foolish one
15:40For tonight your soul is required of you
15:43The things which you have prepared
15:45Whose will they be?
15:48So is he who lays up treasure for himself
15:50And is not rich toward God
15:55He said to his disciples
15:57Therefore I tell you
15:58Do not be anxious for your life
16:00What you will eat
16:01Nor yet for your body what you will wear
16:04Life is more than food
16:05And the body is more than clothing
16:09Consider the bravents
16:10They don't sow
16:11They don't reap
16:12They have no warehouse or barn
16:14And God feeds them
16:16How much more valuable are you than the birds?
16:20Which of you by being anxious
16:21Can add a cubit to its height?
16:26If then you aren't able to do the very least of these things
16:29Why are you anxious about the rest?
16:33Consider the lilies and how they grow
16:34They don't toil
16:35Neither do they spin
16:37And yet I tell you
16:38Even Solomon in all his glory
16:40Was not arrayed like one of them
16:43If this is how God clothes the grass in the field
16:46Which exists today and tomorrow is cast into the oven
16:49How much more will he clothe you?
16:52O you of little faith
16:55Don't seek what you will eat
16:57Or what you will drink
16:58Do not be anxious
16:59For the nations of the world
17:01Seek after all these things
17:03But your father knows
17:04That you need these things
17:07But seek the kingdom of God
17:09And all these things will be added to you
17:12Do not be afraid little flock
17:14For it is your father's good pleasure
17:16To give you the kingdom
17:18Sell that which you have
17:19And give gifts to the needy
17:21Make for yourselves purses
17:23Which don't grow old
17:24A treasure in the heavens
17:26That doesn't fail
17:27Where no thief approaches
17:29Neither moth destroys
17:32For well your treasure is
17:34There will your heart also be
17:36Let your waist be dress
17:38And your lumps burning
17:42This is the word of the Lord
17:45Thanks be to God
17:51For many of us it is easy
17:53For us to be a Christian
17:56But for some others
17:57It could be very different
18:00There are an increasing number of countries
18:03Where it is illegal to be a Christian
18:07Illegal to go to church
18:08And illegal to be in possession
18:10Of any Christian book
18:12Or other material
18:14Not only can it be illegal
18:16But the punishment can be severe
18:21There are several places
18:22Where you can expect execution
18:25But many more where
18:26In definite prison terms
18:28Are the norm
18:31There are any number of cases
18:33Right now where Christian priests
18:35And members of churches
18:36Have spent ten or more years in prison
18:39Not allowed contact
18:41From friends or family
18:43And without any pretense of trial
18:46I personally know people
18:48Who are followed home from church
18:50On a Sunday
18:50By the police
18:52In an act of intimidation
18:55Despite the fact that
18:56They live in a country
18:57Which claims to be tolerant
19:00Of all religions
19:03If these people can endure
19:05These things for Christ
19:07Surely we can put up
19:08With the occasional sarcastic comments
19:10Or ridicule
19:12After all
19:13What is a short span
19:14Of endurance in this world
19:16Compared with an eternity
19:18In the next
19:20Better by far
19:21To be true to our Lord
19:23In this world
19:23Than to be denied access
19:26To paradise forever
19:31Most surely
19:32The one who blasphemes
19:34Against the Holy Spirit
19:35The one who blasphemes
19:37Against Christ's church
19:38Who maliciously opposes
19:40Or persecutes it
19:41Can never find forgiveness
19:45The reason for this
19:46Is quite simple
19:47If we make up the church
19:49Our enemy
19:50If we turn our back
19:51To the love
19:52That Jesus wants to give us
19:54How can we possibly
19:56Ever find forgiveness
19:57In God's grace
19:59It is simply not possible
20:03However that is not to say
20:04That we cannot
20:05Reverse the process
20:06And make a change
20:08Consider St. Paul
20:10Once there was a time
20:11When he blasphemed
20:12Against the Holy Spirit
20:14He frustrated
20:15The Spirit working
20:16He persecuted the church
20:18With all his vigor
20:21But Christ revealed
20:22Himself to him
20:23That he made
20:24A life-saving change
20:28So it is
20:29That we hear
20:30That captives
20:30Pray for their tormentors
20:32And from time to time
20:33The tormentors
20:34Give up their lives
20:35To become tormented
20:40Jesus left us
20:41With a wonderful promise
20:43If and when
20:44We are called upon
20:45To stand up for him
20:47The Holy Spirit
20:48Will reveal to us
20:49Exactly what we should say
20:51As happened to Stephen
20:52When he faced trial
20:57The man in the crowd
20:59In today's reading
21:00Had a grievance
21:00With his brother
21:01Over an inheritance
21:03And how true it is
21:05That inheritances
21:06Cause so much hostility
21:10Either the brother
21:11Had seized the part
21:12Of the estate
21:12Due to this man
21:13For himself
21:14Or as is more likely
21:16Suggested by the Greek
21:17The man wanted more
21:19Than the portion
21:20That had fallen to him
21:23To set this in context
21:24An elder brother
21:26Automatically inherited
21:27A double portion
21:30As in the law of Moses
21:32In Deuteronomy 21
21:3416 and 17
21:36And it is likely
21:37That the younger
21:38Wanted Jesus to intervene
21:40And rule that the brothers
21:41Should inherit equally
21:45To support this contention
21:47Jesus remarked
21:48That the man should be aware
21:49Of greed
21:50Or wanting more
21:51As the Greek translation
21:53Would have it
21:53And it is the man's
21:55Natural tendency to this
21:56That is so often
21:57His undoing
22:00To make his point
22:01Jesus provided a parable
22:03Which reveals
22:04That we can become
22:05So wrapped up
22:06In our wealth
22:07And our business affairs
22:08That we forget
22:09That the things
22:10We have to do
22:12And the things
22:13That we have
22:13Are not of our own
22:15But are merely
22:16On temporary load
22:17From God
22:20In truth
22:21We need to remember
22:22A couple of important
22:23Things in our lives
22:24To make sure
22:24We do not stray
22:25Too far down this path
22:29First of all
22:29That the earth
22:30Belongs to the Lord
22:31And all that is in it
22:33It does not belong to us
22:35We are here
22:36To look after the earth
22:37For God
22:39As trustees
22:41For him
22:41And for our descendants
22:45This might come
22:46As a bit of a shock
22:46To some
22:48But we only have
22:49What the Lord
22:50Chooses to allow us
22:51And what he gives us
22:52He can
22:53And often does
22:54Take away
22:57Secondly
22:58That our time
22:59On earth
22:59Is limited
23:00And it is something
23:01That we can
23:02And all be agreed upon
23:04For every single
23:05One of us
23:06Accepts
23:07That one day
23:07We will die
23:08And that our time
23:09Here will be
23:10Brought to an end
23:14The ancients
23:15Used to believe
23:16That in the
23:16Afterlife
23:17We had a use
23:18For our wealth
23:19And so kings
23:19And princes
23:20Were buried
23:21With their treasure
23:23Today though
23:23We tend not
23:24To believe this
23:25And we leave
23:26Our possessions
23:27To our children
23:29The bible teaches
23:30Us quite clearly
23:31That worldly possessions
23:33Are of no use
23:33To us
23:34In the next life
23:35And that the
23:36Accumulation of wealth
23:38Over and above
23:39Our proper needs
23:41Serves no purpose
23:43At all
23:47In the passage
23:48Jesus makes the point
23:49As strongly as he can
23:50That only spiritual wealth
23:52Counts for anything
23:54The only concern
23:55We should have
23:56Is the well being
23:56Of our soul
23:57For the bank
23:58Cannot transfer money
24:00To heaven
24:06Let us pray
24:09O God who has prepared
24:10For those who love you
24:11Such good things
24:13As past man's understanding
24:15Pour into our hearts
24:17Such love toward you
24:18That we loving you
24:20Above all things
24:22May obtain your promises
24:23Which exceed all
24:26That we can desire
24:27Through Jesus Christ
24:29Praise our Lord
24:30Amen
24:36May the Lord bless us
24:38And keep us
24:39From all evil
24:40Bringing us
24:41To everlasting life
24:44Amen
