00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
00:28who your faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews
00:34who were persecuting you and conspiring against your life.
00:39Root out, I beg you, from my heart, all evil love of any creature.
00:44Grant that I may never prefer anything to you.
00:48May I always show the most perfect charity towards all men,
00:54especially those who trouble me.
00:57Pardon me, my holy Redeemer, for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you,
01:03and for having, for the sake of vile pleasures, turned myself from you.
01:10Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:12who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem,
01:17according to the commandments of the law,
01:19giving them an example of humility and holy love
01:22by kneeling down on the ground and washing their feet,
01:26wiping them with a linen cloth.
01:29I pray that this your example may penetrate my soul,
01:33destroying thoroughly any haughtiness and pride within me.
01:38Give me, O Lord, the deepest humility,
01:40that I may, without delay,
01:42perform the lowest ministry to all men.
01:46Give me perfect obedience,
01:48that I may, with complete diligence,
01:50observe as your commandments,
01:52whatever your appointed representatives may decide.
01:57Give me the most fervent charity,
02:00that I may sincerely love all mankind.
02:05Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
02:08who out of your unspeakable love
02:10gave us the sacrament of the Eucharist,
02:13and in it given yourself to us
02:16with wondrous liberality,
02:18so that you might remain with us
02:20even bodily unto the end of the world.
02:25Grant me, I beg you, O Lord,
02:27an earnest longing
02:28and inkindle in my innermost soul
02:31an intense hunger
02:33for this adorable sacrament.
02:36Grant that when I go to the table of life
02:38I may receive you
02:39with chaste affection,
02:41complete humility
02:42and perfect purity of heart.
02:45May my soul so thirst for you now
02:48and so languish in your love
02:50that I may one day
02:52be found suitable
02:53to enjoy the delights
02:54of your eternal kingdom
02:56to the glory everlasting of your name.
03:00Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:03who, when you were about to leave the world,
03:06commanded and comforted
03:08with words of unspeakable sweetness
03:10your disciples
03:12and most earnestly commended them
03:15in prayer to your Father,
03:17most plainly showing
03:19how tenderly you loved them
03:21and us
03:22who were to believe
03:23through their word.
03:25Grant that my heart
03:27may evermore relish
03:28your word
03:29and that I may find
03:31your words sweeter
03:32than honey to my taste.
03:35O that the spirit
03:37of that burning exhortation
03:38may so glide into my heart
03:40that I may be
03:42wholly transformed
03:43into your love.
03:45So direct all my ways,
03:46O Lord my God,
03:48that your holy will
03:49may be done
03:50in and by me
03:51for ever and ever.
03:55Praise and honour
03:56and glory be to you,
03:57O Christ,
03:58who went out
03:59with your disciples
04:00across the Kedron brook
04:01and came into the garden
04:03which you knew
04:04would be
04:05where you would be taken.
04:08May I entirely
04:09give up my will
04:10and always follow
04:12and love yours.
04:13May I,
04:14for your honour
04:15and for the salvation
04:16of my brothers and sisters,
04:18boldly endure
04:19any adversity
04:20and be willing
04:21even to lay down
04:22my life
04:23if your divine providence
04:25should so ordain it.
04:28Praise, honour
04:29and glory be to you,
04:30O Christ,
04:31who,
04:32as your passion
04:33drew nigh,
04:33began to be
04:34sorrowful
04:35and sad
04:36with a heavy heart
04:37and so that
04:39by transferring
04:39the weakness
04:40of all your members
04:41to yourself
04:42you might be able
04:43to console
04:44and strengthen them
04:45when they were
04:46in their time of fear
04:48at the approach of death
04:49by this
04:50your own weakness
04:52which you have
04:52willingly taken upon you.
04:56Preserve me,
04:57I beg you,
04:58both from the
04:59immoderate sorrow
05:00and from foolish
05:01gladness.
05:03Grant that the grief
05:04which I have thus far
05:06endured
05:06may be for your glory
05:08and for the remission
05:09of my sins.
05:11Remove
05:12mercifully from me
05:13all distrust
05:14and unnecessary
05:15weakness
05:16and confirm
05:17and establish
05:18my soul
05:19whole
05:19in you.
05:22Praise
05:22and honour
05:23and glory
05:23be to you,
05:24O Christ,
05:25who fell prostrate
05:26on the ground
05:27and prayed
05:27to your Holy Father,
05:29humbly offering
05:30your whole self
05:31to him,
05:32saying,
05:33Your will
05:34be done.
05:35Give me grace
05:36in every necessity
05:38and trouble
05:38to fly to you
05:40in prayer
05:40and freely
05:42to resign
05:42and myself
05:43give myself up
05:45to your will.
05:47May I never
05:49unduly endeavour
05:50to escape
05:50from trouble
05:51but receive
05:52all things
05:53from your hand
05:54with a quiet mind
05:55and may I
05:57endure everything
05:58in meekness
05:59of spirit
06:00for your love.

15:00angels
15:00of god
15:01ascending
15:02and descending
15:02on the
15:03son of man
15:05this is the
15:06word of the
15:07lord
15:08thanks be
15:08to god
15:19we read here the
15:20testimony of john
15:21the baptist
15:22concerning jesus
15:24it is interesting
15:25that john
15:25by his own
15:26admission
15:27did not
15:27immediately
15:28recognize
15:28jesus
15:29for who
15:29who he
15:30was
15:31however
15:32by divine
15:33revelation
15:33jesus
15:34was revealed
15:35to him
15:37we are
15:38told that
15:38john was
15:39told the
15:39one on
15:39whom the
15:40spirit
15:40settled
15:41was the
15:42messiah
15:45things are
15:45not always
15:46immediately
15:46obvious to
15:47us
15:48and we
15:49should draw
15:49comfort from
15:50this account
15:50for although
15:52john was
15:52sent by
15:52god ahead
15:53of his
15:53son
15:53to prepare
15:54a way
15:54for him
15:55it was not
15:56immediately
15:57clear to him
15:58who this
15:58man was
15:59that was
15:59walking
16:00toward him
16:02sometimes
16:02like john
16:03we need a
16:04sign or
16:05confirmation
16:05of some
16:06kind to be
16:07certain
16:07of what our
16:07heart is
16:08telling us
16:10this is not
16:11wrong
16:11and if we
16:13ask in
16:13faith for
16:14confirmation
16:14we will
16:16most surely
16:16receive it
16:21so what is
16:22the most
16:22characteristic
16:23account of
16:24christianity
16:25by which
16:26its supporters
16:27may demand
16:27that its
16:28pretensions
16:29be tried
16:32john
16:33supplies us
16:33with sufficient
16:34answer in
16:35the passages
16:35which i have
16:36joined together
16:37as the text
16:39it is a
16:40system which
16:40aims at the
16:41remission of
16:41sin through
16:42the means of
16:43faith in
16:44jesus christ
16:44the son of
16:45god as
16:46preparation for
16:47the life of
16:48eternity
16:49it is a
16:50method designed
16:51by the divine
16:52wisdom and
16:53carried out
16:54through supreme
16:54divine sacrifice
16:56to bring all
16:57men back
16:58under the
16:59moral standard
17:00of exalted
17:00purity
17:01brightened by
17:02heavenly hope
17:04though its
17:05progress is
17:06always retarded
17:07by the
17:08opposition of
17:08a greater
17:09antagonistic
17:10force
17:11which struggles
17:12to retain
17:13men under
17:13the bondage
17:14of its
17:15worldly power
17:18power
17:19when christianity
17:19was first
17:20proclaimed
17:20the world
17:22was well
17:22nigh lost
17:23in sin
17:24the noblest
17:25cultivation
17:26and the most
17:27perfect art
17:28and the skill
17:29in law and
17:29government
17:30which has never
17:30been surpassed
17:32were unhappily
17:33found to be
17:34compatible
17:35with a
17:36baseness
17:37of moral
17:37degradation
17:38the very
17:39language of
17:40which by
17:40God's mercy
17:41has now
17:42become obsolete
17:43and unknown
17:45now the
17:46gospel revelation
17:47rests upon the
17:48principle
17:48that the
17:49removal of the
17:50weight and stain
17:51of moral evil
17:52was the first
17:53requisite for the
17:54restoration of a
17:55higher life
17:56and that no
17:57cure could be
17:58fend for the
17:59deep-seated
17:59mischief
18:00except through
18:01the renewed
18:02contact of God
18:03himself with
18:04human nature
18:05God himself
18:06condescending to
18:07assume that
18:08nature
18:08with the express
18:10purpose of
18:10winning back the
18:11world to purity
18:12and holiness
18:16Christ came
18:17not only to
18:18take up man's
18:18nature
18:19and to show
18:20forth the
18:20noblest examples
18:21of its capacities
18:23but much more
18:24than this
18:25by a still more
18:26marvellous
18:26condescension
18:27he came to
18:29die for our
18:29sins
18:30that thus
18:31the blood of
18:32Christ
18:33who runs
18:34through with
18:35the Holy Spirit
18:36offered himself
18:37without spot
18:38to God
18:40that might purge
18:41our consciences
18:42from dead works
18:43and to serve
18:44the living God
18:47this is the
18:48concise summary
18:49of the whole thing
18:49and the Christian
18:51argument must
18:52always remain
18:53weak and
18:53defective
18:54if it ever
18:55swerves from
18:56preaching its
18:57most important
18:57practical results
19:00the remission
19:01of sin
19:01through faith
19:02in Christ
19:05we must never
19:06rest satisfied
19:07then with
19:08the negative
19:09position that
19:10the power of
19:10sin has been
19:11destroyed
19:13it was the
19:14further object
19:14of the work
19:15of Christ
19:15that our
19:16higher life
19:17might be
19:17created through
19:18faith in his
19:18name
19:20we must pass
19:21on from the
19:22removal of
19:22hindrances
19:23by which man
19:24was fettered
19:24to recognise
19:26the larger
19:26capabilities
19:27that were
19:28infused
19:29through the
19:30regenerate
19:30life
19:32by the
19:33atonement
19:33of Christ
19:34the strength
19:34of sin
19:35was virtually
19:36broken
19:37but the way
19:38was thereby
19:39opened for
19:40the development
19:40of a
19:41nobler freedom
19:43the new man
19:44was to be
19:45created afresh
19:46in knowledge
19:46righteousness
19:47and holiness
19:48and so
19:50he was to be
19:50brought back
19:51to the likeness
19:52of God's image
19:53which he had
19:54all but lost
19:55through centuries
19:56of alienation
19:57and sin
20:00made free
20:01from sin
20:02he was now
20:03to become
20:03the servant
20:03of righteousness
20:06there is not
20:07a single talent
20:08or endowment
20:08which may not
20:09be raised
20:10to a higher level
20:11and invested
20:12with a nobler
20:13character
20:13if it is
20:15cultivated
20:16in a religious
20:16temper
20:17or religious
20:18ends
20:20our estimate
20:21of the measure
20:22in which
20:23this deal
20:24is fulfilled
20:25must be formed
20:26with the completeness
20:28with which
20:28these various duties
20:29are acknowledged
20:30and provided for
20:33completeness
20:33being a fair
20:34and reasonable
20:35test of any
20:36theory of life
20:37and conduct
20:39if we turn
20:40to the motives
20:41which influence
20:42the will
20:42we can find
20:44none so pure
20:44and lofty
20:45as those
20:45which are inspired
20:47by faith
20:47through the prospect
20:49of eternity
20:51if we judge
20:52by the extension
20:53of the intellectual
20:54horizon
20:56revelation teaches
20:57us to embrace
20:57the spiritual
20:58as well as the material
21:00within the range
21:01of our knowledge
21:04finally
21:05if we are questioned
21:06on the claims
21:07of science
21:07the true religious
21:09temper would welcome
21:10to the full
21:11its great discoveries
21:12and be thankful
21:13for the means
21:14with which it has
21:15reached the families
21:16of men
21:17but it would assign
21:18them their true
21:19position in the range
21:20of nature
21:20and demand an equal
21:22admission for the
21:23principles of religion
21:24and morality
21:25to the circles
21:26of recognised
21:28knowledge
21:32when Jesus met
21:33Philip
21:33he said just two
21:35simple words
21:36follow me
21:38that was all it took
21:39no long discourse
21:41on theology
21:42no persuasion
21:43just two simple
21:45words
21:48how is it then
21:49that we need
21:50so much more
21:51if two simple words
21:52were enough
21:53to get Philip
21:53to leave the home
21:54he grew up in
21:55and take a really
21:56big chance
21:58why can it not be
21:59that simple
22:00for us
22:03the truth is
22:04that we have become
22:05too complicated
22:06perhaps too cynical
22:08and less willing
22:09to trust other people
22:11we hide behind
22:12the complexity
22:13of our lives
22:14by telling ourselves
22:15that Philip
22:16did not have a mortgage
22:17to pay
22:17did not have bills
22:19outstanding
22:19work to do
22:20and a family
22:21to support
22:23but perhaps
22:23we should try
22:24to be more like
22:25Philip
22:28one day
22:29it could be you
22:30who is being called
22:31what would you do
22:35and then
22:36we find ourselves
22:37confronted by the
22:38account of
22:39Nathaniel's meeting
22:40with Jesus
22:42sceptical at first
22:43he doubted anything
22:44good could possibly
22:45come out of Nazareth
22:48but
22:49and this is the most
22:50important bit
22:51he did not hesitate
22:52to go and see
22:53for himself
22:56meeting Jesus
22:57he was confronted
22:58by the truth
22:59and immediately
23:00believed
23:04Nathaniel is
23:04for us
23:05the ideal model
23:07because although
23:08he had his debts
23:10he went
23:11with an open mind
23:12and having seen
23:15unquestioningly
23:15believed
23:16absolutely
23:21for his part
23:22the reaction of Jesus
23:23to the meeting
23:24with Nathaniel
23:25is equally instructive
23:26and revealingly
23:27unique
23:30in fact
23:30Jesus went out
23:31of his way
23:32to flatter Nathaniel
23:34perhaps
23:35because Nathaniel
23:36was himself
23:36somewhat prone
23:38to self-criticism
23:39and was also
23:40aware of his
23:41own weaknesses
23:45if this was
23:46the case
23:46and we should
23:48really assume
23:49that it was
23:49then he presents
23:51himself as a man
23:52who had a
23:53spiritual awareness
23:54and curiosity
23:56and a willingness
23:57to learn
23:58at the same time
23:59as having little
24:00regard for his
24:01own self
24:04in turn
24:05Jesus presented
24:06two sides
24:07of himself
24:07the first
24:09to equally
24:10belittle
24:10his own status
24:12he referred to
24:13himself as
24:14the son of man
24:15as opposed
24:15to the son of God
24:18but also
24:18revealing a little
24:19of his heavenly glory
24:20with the vision
24:21of the angels
24:22coming to
24:23and from heaven
24:28let us pray
24:31O God
24:32who declares
24:33your almighty power
24:34most chiefly
24:35in showing mercy
24:36and pity
24:38mercifully grant
24:39to us
24:40such a measure
24:41of your grace
24:42that we
24:42running the way
24:43of your commandments
24:44may obtain
24:46your gracious promises
24:47and be made
24:49sharers
24:49in your heavenly
24:50treasure
24:51through Jesus
24:52Christ
24:53our Lord
24:54Amen
25:00May the Lord
25:01bless us
25:02and keep us
25:03from all evil
25:04bringing us
25:05to everlasting life
25:07to everlasting life
25:08Amen
