00:22Let us pray.
00:50Let us pray.
00:54And through your mercy be introduced as an adopted son into the heavenly inheritance.
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who in the midst of reproach and injury bore your cross
01:07with excessive pain on your sacred and cut shoulders.
01:13Wearied and panting for breath, you toiled exceedingly under its heavy weight.
01:19Give me grace to take hold of the cross of self-denial with ardent devotion and to imitate with the
01:25most fervent of charity the example of your virtues and to follow you in humility even unto death.
01:38Let us pray.
01:49Draw me after you that I may quickly follow. Grant that for your sake I may entirely deny, forsake and
01:57go out of myself.
01:59Give me grace to think of you alone and to find no joy except in you, my Redeemer.
02:07Grant that I may love you alone and may return love for love. May I earnestly seek after you and
02:14live to you alone.
02:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who when bowed down by the weight of your cross, at
02:24length reached the place of punishment, where, quite exhausted, they offered you wine mingled with gall.
02:34May you, O God, may you, and may you, my God, for your love.
02:35May you extinguish in me all gluttonous and carnal desire, giving me grace never to consent to any impure or
02:43unlawful pleasure.
02:45But may I take my food in moderation to the glory of your name and may hunger and thirst after
02:51you alone, and find no pleasure or gladness except in you.
02:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who was stripped before the gaze of all people on Mount
03:04Calvary, and the soreness of your wounds being increased by the removal of your clothing.
03:11You did not refuse to undergo for my sake the most dreadful pain.
03:17Grant that I may love the spirit of poverty and never be disturbed by want or scarcity.
03:24Give me grace to bear patiently any difficulties or troubles in this life for the glory of your name.
03:31Strip my heart of every vain fancy and affection, and grant me a holy intent with pious desires, renewing within
03:41me daily a most pure love for yourself.
03:45Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who gave himself up to be extended naked upon the wood
03:53of the cross, and the joints of your most holy limbs to be wrenched apart, most cruelly nailed and fastened
04:00thereto.
04:02Then, for my sake, you suffered your most delicate hands and feet to be most deeply wounded.
04:10Grant, O Lord, that I might remember, with a faithful and grateful heart, this your unspeakable charity, when you did
04:20of your own accord stretch out your hands to be bored, and your feet to be pierced through.
04:26O Lord, enlarge and extend my heart by perfect love of you, pierce it, and fix it to yourself with
04:34the nail of your sweetest love, and shut up within yourself alone all my senses, all my thoughts, and all
04:42my affections.
04:44Amen.
04:48O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
04:59O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:18O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.

13:05Listen to what the unrighteous judge says
13:09Won't God give justice to his chosen ones
13:11Who cry out to him day and night
13:14Will he delay long to help them
13:17I tell you, he will give them justice speedily
13:21Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes
13:24Will he find faith on earth
13:29Jesus also told this parable
13:32To some who were confident
13:33That they were righteous and looked down on everyone else
13:38Two men went up to the temple to pray
13:40One a Pharisee and the other a tax collector
13:44The Pharisee stood and prayed about himself like this
13:49God, I thank you that I am not like other people
13:53Extortionists, unrighteous people, adulterers
13:56Or even like this tax collector
14:00I fast twice a week
14:01I give a tenth of everything I get
14:06The tax collector, however, stood far off
14:09And could not even look up to heaven
14:11But beat his breast and said
14:14O God, be merciful to me, a sinner that I am
14:18I tell you, that this man went down to his home justified
14:22Rather than the Pharisee
14:24For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled
14:27But he who humbles himself will be exalted
14:34They were also bringing their babies to him
14:37That he might touch them
14:39But when the disciples saw it
14:41They rebuked them
14:43Jesus summoned them, saying
14:44Allow the little children to come to me
14:47Do not hinder them
14:48For God's kingdom belongs to such as these
14:52Most certainly, I tell you
14:53Whoever doesn't receive God's kingdom
14:56Like a little child
14:57He will in no way enter into it
15:04A certain ruler asked him, saying
15:06Good teacher
15:08What should I do to inherit eternal life?
15:15Jesus asked him
15:17Why do you call me good?
15:19No one is good except one
15:21God
15:23You know the commandments
15:26Don't commit adultery
15:27Don't murder
15:28Don't steal
15:29Don't give false testimony
15:32Honor your father and mother
15:36The man said
15:37I have observed all these things from my youth on
15:42When Jesus heard these things
15:44He said to him
15:45You still lack one thing
15:47Sell all that you have
15:49And distribute it to the poor
15:52You will have treasure in heaven
15:54Come
15:55And follow me
15:58When he heard these things
16:00He became very sad
16:01For he was very rich
16:04Jesus
16:05Seeing that he had become very sad
16:07Said
16:07How hard it is
16:09For those who have riches
16:10To enter into God's kingdom
16:13For it is easier for a camel
16:15To enter in through a needle's eye
16:17Than for a rich man
16:19To enter into God's kingdom
16:22Those who heard it said
16:24Then who can be saved?
16:27But Jesus said
16:28The things which are impossible with men
16:31Are possible with God
16:35Peter said
16:36Look
16:37We have left everything
16:39And followed you
16:41Jesus replied
16:43Most certainly I tell you
16:44There is no one
16:45Who has left house
16:47Or wife
16:47Or brothers
16:48Or parents
16:48Or children
16:49For God's kingdom's sake
16:52Who will not receive
16:53Many times more
16:54In this life
16:55And in the world to come
16:57Eternal life
17:01Then he took the twelve aside
17:02And said to them
17:04Behold
17:04We are going up to Jerusalem
17:06And all the things
17:07That are written
17:08Through the prophets
17:09Concerning the Son of Man
17:10Will be completed
17:14This is the word of the Lord
17:17Thanks be to God
17:25There are several aspects
17:27To consider
17:27In today's passage
17:30First of all
17:31In terms of prayer in general
17:32It is both our right
17:34And our duty
17:35To make prayer
17:36An essential part of our lives
17:39Prayer should be as natural
17:40As drawing breath
17:41And as constant
17:43I am not just talking here
17:45About the times
17:46We get on our knees
17:46Before God
17:47And pour out our heart
17:49To him
17:50But also in terms of
17:51Keeping up and running
17:53Conversation with him
17:54As we go about
17:55Our daily business
17:58Let us remember
17:59That he is there
18:00Right next to us
18:02Watching
18:03And ready to help
18:04The moment we ask
18:06Not only this
18:08But if we are
18:09Constantly talking with him
18:10We are unlikely
18:12To forget him
18:13And much less likely
18:14To fall into sin
18:19Many years ago
18:20I remember preparing
18:21For my advanced driving test
18:24My instructor told me
18:26That a good driver
18:26Is constantly talking
18:28To himself
18:29About the potential hazards
18:30On the road
18:31So that they remain
18:33Alive in front of our minds
18:34And we remain
18:35In a state of alertness
18:39I was told
18:40That I should always
18:40Have an emergency plan
18:43Where is my escape route
18:44If someone pulls it
18:45In front of me
18:46For instance
18:48Yes
18:49It was indeed
18:50Hard work
18:51Mentally
18:52But then so is
18:53Prayer
18:53And prayer
18:54In so many ways
18:55Is exactly the same
18:57As this
18:59Talk to God
19:00As you walk down the road
19:01As you prepare for work
19:03As you go to a meeting
19:04As you dig the garden
19:07And you will be surprised
19:08How often you will hear him
19:09Talking with you
19:15There is a lesson here
19:16In human nature
19:18If even the unjust judge
19:20Could be prevailed upon
19:21To give justice
19:23And he could be
19:24Grand dead
19:26By constant petitioning
19:29Even if he cannot
19:30Stand the petitioner
19:31Eventually
19:32He is going to
19:34Listen to the case
19:35And deal properly
19:36With it
19:37If even
19:38To be sure
19:40He never hears
19:41From the petitioner
19:42Again
19:45Let it not be said
19:47That God is unjust
19:48For he is absolutely not
19:50But if the unjust
19:52Can dispense justice
19:53Think of the justice
19:55As our Lord
19:55Can give to us
19:57He too
19:58He hears all our petitions
20:00And will give us
20:02The relief we need
20:06What we are told
20:07Though
20:07Through this parable
20:09Is that we must not
20:10Be reluctant in prayer
20:12But unhesitating
20:13In our plea
20:16So let us pray
20:17In earnest
20:17Day and night
20:18For the needs of each other
20:20For the needs of the world
20:21And for the crises
20:22In our lives each day
20:25Show God
20:26In the way in which we pray
20:29Not his talking
20:30But pleading
20:31To the point of tears
20:32How much we love him
20:34And trust him
20:34How the world
20:36Is in dire straits
20:37How desperate
20:38We need his help
20:39What a mess
20:40We have made
20:41Of our lives
20:42And prepare to be surprised
20:44When things start
20:45To slowly turn around
20:49We learn all that
20:50We need to know
20:51For a few of the parables
20:52Of Jesus
20:53Were so precisely
20:54Targeted in advance
20:58With the parable
20:59Of the Pharisee
21:00And the tax collector
21:01We have a clear
21:02And potent warning
21:03To all of us
21:04Regardless of who we are
21:07Because we all have
21:08A little of the Pharisee
21:09In us
21:09Even though we are
21:11All tax collectors
21:15The Pharisee
21:16Was the symbol
21:17Of propriety
21:18In the Jewish establishment
21:20A quantum step up
21:22From the more humble
21:23Village Rabbi
21:24One to whom
21:25Deference was paid
21:26And to whom
21:28Were looked
21:28For moral leadership
21:32Of course
21:33There was a huge difference
21:34Between one Pharisee
21:35And another
21:36And it is wrong
21:37To generalise
21:38And we indeed
21:40We know
21:41Of several
21:43Genuine
21:44Good
21:46Loyal
21:47Christian Pharisees
21:50But at the time
21:51Of Jesus
21:52It seems to have
21:53Been the case
21:54That the majority
21:55Were impious
21:56And conceited
21:57Or revelling
21:59In the social status
22:00They enjoyed
22:03The tax collector
22:05On the other hand
22:05Was truly
22:06The most reviled
22:07Of all characters
22:08Being a symbol
22:10Of the Roman occupation
22:11Whose taxes
22:12They collected
22:14Rather than being
22:15Employees
22:16Of the Roman government
22:17They were given
22:18A franchise
22:19And took a slice
22:21Of what they received
22:23In taxes
22:23Before passing them
22:24On to the government
22:29This unfortunate
22:30Arrangement
22:31Was open to abuse
22:34And it would seem
22:35The majority
22:37Were in the habit
22:37Of charging
22:38Far more tax
22:39Than they needed
22:39So that their
22:41Cut
22:41Their slice
22:43Was that much
22:43The greater
22:45While many
22:46Were dishonest
22:47And extortionist
22:48We have to accept
22:49That like the Pharisees
22:50There were some
22:52Who were
22:53Relatively honest
22:56And the warning
22:57That Jesus gave
22:58Was simple
23:00We are all sinners
23:01And therefore
23:02We should never
23:02Under any circumstances
23:04Judge or accuse
23:05Others of their sin
23:07By extension
23:08This includes
23:09All form of gossip
23:10And any form
23:11Of conversation
23:12Regarding other people
23:15When we consider
23:16Ourselves
23:17We should not
23:18Be contented
23:19And smugged
23:20In our security
23:21But humble
23:22And seeking penitence
23:23For the things
23:24We have done
23:25Which have not
23:26Honoured
23:27Our Lord
23:29In the example
23:30Of the parable
23:31The tax collector
23:32Knew that he
23:33Was a sinful man
23:34And relied
23:35On God's mercy
23:37He knew
23:38He was unworthy
23:39Of God's love
23:40And humbled himself
23:42Before him
23:45Sadly
23:46The church
23:47Is today
23:49And probably
23:49Always has been
23:50Full of Pharisees
23:53Those who are
23:54Satisfied in their
23:55Position
23:55And think themselves
23:57Better than some
23:57Of the others
24:00They seek
24:00To sit in judgment
24:01Of those
24:02Who do not
24:02Come up
24:03To their standards
24:05Failing to realise
24:06That their standards
24:07Are not the ones
24:09That God applies
24:10And that we all
24:11Fail
24:11In front of God
24:14Let us remember
24:15That the church
24:16Is not for perfect people
24:18But it is for
24:19The sinner
24:21Christ came to
24:22Save sinners
24:23Not the perfect
24:25If we think
24:26Ourselves perfect
24:26Then we do not
24:28Need the church
24:28And have no place
24:29Within it
24:32The great company
24:33Of those who are
24:35Indeed the saviour's people
24:36Is made up of those
24:39Who resemble
24:39Little children
24:41In distinctive features
24:42Of their character
24:44The church militant
24:46And far more
24:47The church triumphant
24:48Consists of such
24:50As these
24:51Unsophisticated ones
24:53Fresh from God
24:54Who is our home
24:56Their birth
24:57Perhaps for all
24:58That we know
24:58Asleep and forgetting
25:01And the heaven
25:02They came from
25:02Still around them
25:04In their infancy
25:05As a poet
25:06Of the purest
25:07Inspiration
25:07Has sung
25:09Such in temper
25:10In disposition
25:11And in character
25:14Of all things
25:15You could point to
25:16In this world
25:17The thing that
25:18Could give you
25:20The best idea
25:20Of the essential spirit
25:22That is most charmed
25:23Though
25:23Is the spirit
25:25Of an innocent
25:26And happy little child
25:28Like teachable
25:29Like humble
25:30Like gentle
25:31Like affectionate
25:32Like confiding
25:33Should all true
25:35Christians be
25:38Even worldly genius
25:39Has shown us
25:40How beautiful it is
25:41To see something
25:42Get of the child's
25:43Warm heart
25:44In the man
25:45With the hoary hair
25:47Something of the
25:48Unspoiled freshness
25:49Of infancy
25:50And its home
25:52Great simplicity
25:53Abiding still
25:54With one who
25:56Has seen the great world
25:57And borne an honoured
25:58Part in its
25:59Toil and conflict
26:01One of those
26:02Who as St Paul
26:03Would have it
26:04In malice
26:05Are children
26:06But in understanding
26:08Are men
26:12There is an
26:13Other sense
26:14In which these
26:15Words may be
26:15Taken
26:16Which may well
26:17Be cherished
26:18By our most
26:18Firesides
26:22I believe
26:23That we may
26:23Take the words
26:24Of our saviour
26:25And then
26:25Dethrone him
26:26As implying
26:27That the kingdom
26:28Of God
26:29In the assembly
26:30Of redeemed
26:30Souls in heaven
26:32Is in great measure
26:33Made up
26:34Of little children
26:36All that die
26:37In infancy
26:38Are saved
26:38And half the
26:39Human beings
26:40Born into this
26:41World die
26:42In infancy
26:44If the entire
26:45Human race
26:45Should be gathered
26:46Sanctified and
26:47Forgiven
26:48Before the throne
26:49Above
26:50Still each
26:51Second one
26:52There
26:53Would never
26:54Have known more
26:55Of this sinful
26:55And sorrowful
26:56World
26:56Than comes
26:58Within their
26:58Brief experience
26:59Of early childhood
27:04Jesus went on
27:06To explain
27:07That they were
27:08Setting off
27:09For Jerusalem
27:10And pointed
27:11To the suffering
27:12Ahead
27:14Why did
27:15Christ suffer
27:18The answer
27:18To this question
27:19Is simple
27:20He suffered
27:21As a sacrifice
27:22For the sin
27:22Of the world
27:23It was the ultimate
27:24And perfecting act
27:26Of his obedience
27:27To his father
27:28To carry down
27:29Into death
27:30That death sentence
27:31Nature
27:31Which he had
27:32Taken into the
27:33Godhead
27:34To subject
27:36His divine
27:36Person to the
27:37Dark
27:38And utterly
27:39Mysterious to us
27:40Contact
27:41With the reality
27:42Of death
27:43And to put
27:44By his almighty
27:45Power of casting
27:46Off from himself
27:47The sentence
27:48Of death
27:49Which he
27:50Bore about him
27:52This is why
27:53Christ died
27:54That he might
27:55In his own body
27:56As the second
27:57Head
27:57And including
27:59Representative
27:59Of mankind
28:02Pay the penalty
28:03Of death
28:04Which rested
28:05On that manhood
28:06Which was summed
28:06Up in him
28:08The Godhead
28:09Of our blessed
28:10Lord
28:10Is an element
28:11Absolutely necessary
28:12To the belief
28:13Of even the least
28:15Portion
28:15Of the benefits
28:16And effects
28:17Of his death
28:19If man
28:20Does not firmly
28:21And clearly
28:21Hope that
28:22He does not
28:23Have a notion
28:23Of what is meant
28:24By the doctrine
28:25Of Christ's
28:26Atonement
28:26For sin
28:27His entire
28:28Oneness
28:29With the Father
28:30Lies at the very
28:31Root of all
28:35If it was necessary
28:37For Christ
28:37To submit to death
28:38In order to
28:39Take away
28:40The sin of the world
28:42Why did he die
28:43In the way he did
28:47We cannot tell
28:48How much of
28:49Deep humiliation
28:50And desertion
28:51And anguish
28:52Was absolutely
28:52Necessary
28:53In the covenant
28:54Which infinite
28:55Wisdom arranged
28:56To make that death
28:58The full and
28:59Sufficient sacrifice
29:00Oblation and
29:01Satisfaction
29:02For the sin
29:03Of the whole world
29:06The analogy
29:07Of the Redeemer's
29:08Whole life
29:08Leads us to
29:09The humble
29:09Inference
29:11That nothing
29:11Less than
29:12Such an amount
29:12Of self-denial
29:13And endurance
29:15Of pain
29:16Contradiction
29:17Of sinners
29:17Was enough
29:19For the accomplishment
29:20Of his mighty
29:21Purpose
29:24Even in its
29:25Hidden
29:25And unfathomable
29:27Recesses
29:27Where it
29:28Flowed forth
29:29From unity
29:30With the
29:30Father's will
29:32But if we
29:33Look at this
29:34Same matter
29:34From another
29:35And from a
29:36Human point of
29:37View
29:37Even to us
29:38There may be
29:39Made plain and
29:40Full and
29:41Sufficient reason
29:41Why these
29:43Sufferings
29:43Should have
29:43Been
29:44Undertaken
29:47Our blessed
29:48Lord sums
29:48It up for
29:49Us in a
29:49Few simple
29:50Words
29:51I
29:52If I
29:52Be lifted
29:53Up
29:53Will draw
29:54All men
29:55To me
29:57These
29:57Stupendous
29:58Sufferings
29:59Of the
29:59Son of
29:59God
29:59Were undertaken
30:00To put away
30:01Sin
30:01The sin
30:03Of the
30:03World
30:03The sin
30:03Of each
30:04And every
30:04One of
30:05Us
30:05And they
30:06Were undertaken
30:07That each
30:08Man might be
30:08Mightily
30:09Constrained
30:09By the
30:10Power of
30:10Divine
30:11Love
30:11Shown
30:12In them
30:12To take
30:13Up the
30:14Freedom
30:14Purchased
30:15For him
30:15To see
30:17Himself
30:17Complete
30:17In Christ
30:18His
30:19Satisfaction
30:19Before God
30:20To live
30:21As Christ
30:22Free man
30:23Prevailing
30:24Over and
30:24Conquering
30:25Sin
30:25And daily
30:26Renewed
30:27With God
30:33Let us
30:34Pray
30:36Lord of
30:37All power
30:37And might
30:38Who is
30:39The author
30:39And giver
30:40Of all
30:41Good things
30:43Graft
30:43In our
30:44Hearts
30:44The love
30:45Of your
30:45Name
30:47Increase
30:47In us
30:48True
30:48Religion
30:49Nourish
30:50Us
30:50With all
30:51Goodness
30:51And of
30:52Your
30:53Great
30:53Mercy
30:53Keep us
30:54In the
30:55Same
30:55Through
30:56Jesus
30:56Christ
30:57Our
30:57Lord
30:58Amen
31:04May the
31:05Lord bless
31:05Us
31:06And keep
31:06Us
31:07From all
31:07Evil
31:08Bringing us
31:09To everlasting
31:10Life
31:11Amen
