00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, whom your faithless disciple Judas sold
00:32for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were persecuting you and conspiring against your
00:37life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart all evil love of any creature. Grant that I may
00:45never prefer anything to you. May I always show the most perfect charity towards all
00:53men, especially those who trouble me. Pardon me, my holy Redeemer, for having so often prepared
01:01vain and perishable things to you, and for having, for the sake of vile pleasures, turned
01:07myself from you.
01:10Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who ate the Passover with your disciples at
01:16Jerusalem, according to the commandments of the law, giving them an example of humility
01:21and holy love, by kneeling down on the ground and washing their feet, wiping them with a
01:27linen cloth.
01:29I pray that this your example may penetrate my soul, destroying thoroughly any haughtiness
01:36and pride within me.
01:38Give me, O Lord, the deepest humility, that I may, without delay, perform the lowest ministry
01:44to all men. Give me perfect obedience, that I may, with complete diligence, observe as your
01:51commandments, whatever your appointed representatives may decide. Give me the most fervent charity,
02:00that I may sincerely love all mankind.
02:05Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who out of your unspeakable love gave us the
02:12sacrament of the Eucharist, and in it given yourself to us with wondrous liberality, so that
02:19you might remain with us even bodily unto the end of the world.
02:25Grant me, I beg you, O Lord, an earnest longing and enkindle in my innermost soul an intense
02:33hunger for this adorable sacrament. Grant that when I go to the table of life I may receive
02:39you with chaste affection, complete humility and perfect purity of heart. May my soul so
02:47thirst for you now, and so languish in your love, that I may one day be found suitable to enjoy
02:54the delights of your eternal kingdom, to the glory everlasting of your name.
03:00Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were about to leave the world,
03:06commanded and comforted with words of unspeakable sweetness your disciples, and most earnestly
03:14commended them in prayer to your Father, most plainly showing how tenderly you loved them
03:21and us who were to believe through their word. Grant that my heart may evermore relish your
03:29word, and that I may find your words sweeter than honey to my taste. O that the spirit of
03:37that burning exhortation may so glide into my heart, that I may be wholly transformed into
03:43your love. So direct all my ways, O Lord my God, that your holy will may be done in and
03:51by me
03:51for ever and ever.
03:55Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who went out with your disciples across the
04:00Kedron brook, and came into the garden which you knew would be where you would be taken.
04:08May I entirely give up my will and always follow and love yours. May I, for your honour and for
04:15the salvation of my brothers and sisters, boldly endure any adversity and be willing even to
04:22lay down my life, if your divine providence should so ordain it.
04:28Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who as your passion drew nigh, began to be
04:34sorrowful and sad, with a heavy heart, and so that by transferring the weakness of all
04:41your members to yourself, you might be able to console and strengthen them when they were
04:46in their time of fear at the approach of death. By this, your own weakness which you
04:52had willingly taken upon you. Preserve me, I beg you, both from the immoderate sorrow
05:00and from foolish gladness. Grant that the grief which I have thus far endured may be for your
05:07glory and for the remission of my sins. Remove mercifully from me all distrust and unnecessary
05:15weakness and confirm and establish my soul whole in you.
05:22Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who fell prostrate on the ground and prayed to
05:28your Holy Father, humbly offering your whole self to him, saying, Your will be done. Give
05:36me grace in every necessity and trouble to fly to you in prayer and freely to resign and myself,
05:44give myself up to your will. May I never unduly endeavour to escape from trouble, but receive
05:53all things from your hand with a quiet mind, and may I endure everything in meekness of
05:59spirit for your love. Amen.
06:05O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:17O be joyful in the Lord, holy lands, serve the Lord with gladness, and come in foolish presence
06:31with your song. Be sure that the Lord needs God. It is He that has made us and not be
06:44ourselves. We are His people and the Sheep of His Master.
06:52And come into His hosts with praise. Be thankful unto Him and speak His could hear, and sing to
07:09thanks to the Lord of His name. For the Lord is gracious, His mercy is everlasting.
07:21and his truth and joy from generation to generation.
07:35Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
07:46as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be
07:56world without end. Amen.
08:05Amen.
08:14I will cry unto God with my voice.
08:20Even unto God will I cry with my voice,
08:28and he shall walk unto me.
08:35In the time of my trouble I sought my Lord.
08:43My sore balance is not in the night season.
08:50My sore refuge and comfort.
08:58When I am in heaviness, I will think upon God.
09:07When my heart is next, I will complain.
09:16Thou holdest mine eyes waiting.
09:23I am so feeble that I cannot speak.
09:33I have considered the days of old,
09:40and I lay it at our cross.
09:47I draw to the remembrance my soul,
09:55and in the night I commune with my Lord God,
10:01and search out my spirits.
10:09Will the Lord have sent itself forever?
10:16And will he be no more entreated?
10:24Is his mercy kingdom for ever?
10:31And is his promise come out on his world
10:37and forever more?
10:43Hath not forgotten to be gracious?
10:50And when he shut up his loving kindness in displeasure?
11:01And I said,
11:03It is thine, Lord, infanity.
11:10But I will remember the years of the night and of the most highest.
11:21I will remember the years of the night and of the night and of the night and of the night
11:33and of the night.
11:38I will be so proud of all.
11:42I will think my soul of all my works,
11:46And my strong name shall be of my doings,
11:52My way, O God, is holy
12:01Who is so great, O God, O God
12:10Thou art the God that's new and gorgeous
12:17And has declared thy power among the people
12:27Darkest night in it, in it, my people
12:35Even the sons of Jacob and Joseph
12:43The waters saw the above
12:46The waters saw the end of our fate
12:52And entered all the trouble
12:56The droughts for that was and the end of our death
13:03And the devil's ransom, God
13:08The waters left on the walls that had been wrought
13:15The light which shone upon the ground
13:19The air was blown and shone with all
13:27My way is in the sea
13:30But I pass in the gravest waters
13:38And I, the steps, are not low
14:00Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
14:11Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
14:12as it was in the beginning
14:16is not ever shall be
14:21only God's name
14:25Amen
14:39A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke
14:43Chapter 9
14:47Now when the days drew near for him to be taken up
14:50Jesus set out resolutely to go to Jerusalem
14:55He sent messengers on ahead of him
14:57and as they went along
14:59they entered a Samaritan village
15:01to make things ready in advance for him
15:04but the villagers refused to welcome him
15:07because he was determined to go to Jerusalem
15:13Now when his disciples James and John saw this
15:17they said
15:17Lord do you want us to call fire
15:20to come down from heaven and consume them
15:23but Jesus rebuked them
15:26and they went on to another village
15:30and as they were walking along the road
15:31someone said to him
15:33I will follow you wherever you go
15:37Jesus said to him
15:39Foxes have dens
15:40and the birds in the sky have nests
15:44but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head
15:49Jesus said to another
15:51follow me
15:53but he replied
15:55Lord let me first go and bury my father
16:00but Jesus said to him
16:01let the dead bury their own dead
16:04but as for you
16:06go and proclaim the kingdom of God
16:10and yet another said
16:12I will follow you Lord
16:14but first let me say goodbye to my family
16:19Jesus said to him
16:21no one who puts his hand to the plough
16:24and looks back
16:25is fit for the kingdom of God
16:30this is the word of the Lord
16:33thanks be to God
16:41we have in today's gospel reading
16:43some of the more memorable incidents
16:45of our Lord's last journey to Jerusalem
16:52very solemnly and very sweetly
16:55does Saint Luke introduce the reference
16:58to his passion
17:01when the time was come
17:03that he should be received up
17:07it mitigates the bitterness
17:09of his Lord's sufferings and death
17:11looking on as it thus does
17:14to the issue and the end
17:17to the taking up of Christ into heaven
17:20to his reception in his heavenly home
17:23and into his father's glory
17:30we begin with an insult
17:33he sent messengers before his face
17:36as harbingers
17:38to see that word in its most proper sense
17:41and they went
17:42and entered into a village of the Samaritans
17:45to make ready for him
17:48and they did not receive him
17:50because his face
17:52was as though he would go to Jerusalem
17:57this refusal of theirs
17:59was no piece of ordinary inhospitality
18:02such as Samaritans were wont to show
18:05to Galilean pilgrims
18:06on their way to the feasts at Jerusalem
18:11it was not merely as such a pilgrim
18:14that they shut their doors against him
18:15for this is what we must remember
18:21was Christ's solemn progress
18:23from Galilee to Judea
18:25as Messiah
18:27with these messengers everywhere
18:29announcing him as such
18:33but as the Samaritans considered it
18:36a messiah going to Jerusalem
18:38to observe the feasts there
18:39did by his very act proclaim
18:42that he was no messiah
18:45for on Gerizim
18:47they believed
18:48the patriarchs of old had worshipped
18:52consecrating it
18:53to be the holy mountain of God
18:54which therefore
18:56and not Jerusalem
18:58the Christ when he came
19:00would recognise and honour
19:02as the central point
19:03of all true religion
19:09the sons of Zebedee
19:10were probably with the Lord
19:11when the tidings were brought back
19:13from the village
19:14which
19:15refusing to receive him
19:17had missed the opportunity
19:19of entertaining
19:20not merely angels
19:22but the Lord of angels
19:23himself
19:25unawares
19:27upon this provocation
19:29all their suppressed
19:31and smouldering indignation
19:32against the schismatics
19:35through whose territory
19:37they were journeying
19:38broke out
19:40at this insistence
19:42of contempt
19:44shown to their Lord
19:46and to themselves
19:47for no doubt
19:48a feeling of personal slight
19:50mingled with their indignation
19:52however little
19:53they may have been aware
19:55of it themselves
19:57the sons of thunder
19:58would play
19:59old testament parts
20:02they feel
20:03that a greater man
20:04than Elias
20:05is here
20:05for they are fresh
20:07from the mount
20:08of the transfiguration
20:09where they had seen
20:11the glory of Moses
20:12and Elias
20:13paled
20:14before the brighter glory
20:15of him
20:15whom they served
20:17this day
20:19an outrage
20:20against him
20:21and a rejection
20:22of him
20:22should therefore
20:24not be less
20:24terribly avenged
20:28with all
20:29of carnal
20:30and sinful
20:30which mingled
20:32with this proposal
20:33of theirs
20:34yet what insight
20:35into the dignity
20:36of the Lord
20:37and the greatness
20:38of the outrage
20:39directed against him
20:40it reveals
20:42the faith
20:43in the mighty powers
20:45which he was able
20:46to equip his servants
20:48and yet it might
20:49almost seem
20:50as though
20:51with all this confidence
20:52of theirs
20:52there was a latent
20:54and lurking sense
20:55upon their part
20:57of a certain
20:58unfitness
20:59in this their proposal
21:01in this their proposal
21:02and thus
21:03out of no desire
21:05to intrude
21:06into their Lord's office
21:07but only out of a feeling
21:09that this avenging act
21:10might not only
21:12become him
21:13they proffer themselves
21:15as the executor
21:16of this judgment
21:19it would become
21:20the servants
21:22though it might not
21:23perfectly become
21:25the Lord
21:27Jesus turned
21:28and rebuked
21:29the disciples
21:30saying
21:32you do not know
21:33what manner of spirit
21:34you are of
21:37you are missing
21:38Christ would say
21:38your true position
21:39which is
21:41having been born
21:42of the spirit
21:43of forgiving love
21:44to be ruled
21:45by that spirit
21:46and not by the spirit
21:48of avenging righteousness
21:50you are losing sight
21:52of the distinction
21:52between the old covenant
21:54and the new
21:55missing the greater glory
21:57of the latter
21:57and that it is
21:59the higher blessedness
22:01to belong to it
22:05it is necessary
22:06for us
22:06to see clearly
22:07that there is
22:08no slight cast
22:09here
22:09of the spirit
22:10of Elias
22:12both spirits
22:13that which are breed
22:15through
22:15and informed
22:16of the prophets
22:17and saints
22:18of the old covenant
22:19as well as that
22:20which should inform
22:21the disciples
22:22of the new
22:24are all
22:25divine
22:27the difference
22:28between them
22:29is not one
22:29of opposition
22:30but one of time
22:31and degree
22:33the spirits
22:34of the old testament
22:35were spirits
22:36of avenging righteousness
22:38God was teaching
22:39men his holiness
22:40by terrible things
22:42in righteousness
22:45but within
22:46the new covenant
22:48not contrary
22:49but brighter
22:50is that
22:51of forgiving
22:52love
22:54in it
22:55he is overcoming
22:56man's evil
22:57with his good
22:58each economy
23:00has one
23:01predominating
23:02tone
23:02from which
23:04it takes
23:04its character
23:07the two apostles
23:08were for the moment
23:09failing to
23:10recognise this
23:11in a confusion
23:13of old and new
23:14and not knowing
23:15of what manner
23:16of spirit
23:17they were
23:17they had fallen
23:19back on the
23:19rudiments
23:20of God's
23:20education
23:21of his people
23:21when it was
23:23their privilege
23:23to go on
23:25into perfection
23:26and to teach
23:27the world
23:28the far greater
23:29might
23:29of meekness
23:31humility
23:32and love
23:35in their
23:36missing of all
23:37this there was
23:37a fault
23:38and matter
23:38of blame
23:40and yet the
23:40blame by no
23:41means so severe
23:42as some are
23:43inclined to find
23:45they were
23:46rebuked
23:46for choosing
23:47that which
23:48whilst perfectly
23:49good in its
23:49own time
23:51was only
23:52not good
23:52now
23:53because a
23:54better had
23:54come
23:55for returning
23:56to the lower
23:57level of the
23:58old covenant
23:58when Christ
23:59had lifted
24:00them up
24:01if only
24:02they had
24:03understood
24:03this
24:03to the
24:04higher
24:05level
24:05of the
24:06new
24:09the
24:10manifold
24:10wisdom
24:11of Christ
24:11which
24:12displayed
24:12itself
24:13in his
24:13drawing
24:14and detaching
24:14of souls
24:15to himself
24:15by ways
24:17the most
24:17different
24:18most often
24:19fell us
24:20with devout
24:21admiration
24:24perhaps it
24:25may never
24:25fill us
24:26more
24:26than with
24:27this
24:29instance
24:29when there
24:30are brought
24:31before us
24:31in quick
24:32succession
24:32moral and
24:33spiritual
24:34conditions
24:35with much
24:36apparent
24:36similarity
24:38which yet
24:39are most
24:39diversely
24:40treated by
24:40him
24:41such as
24:42we have
24:43in today's
24:44reading
24:45there were
24:46here three
24:47who either
24:48in their
24:48own
24:48interpretation
24:49or in
24:50the Lord's
24:50are candidates
24:52for admission
24:52into the
24:53inner circle
24:54of disciples
24:57that is
24:58into the
24:59circle
25:00not of
25:02those who
25:02would receive
25:03the truth
25:04merely
25:05but as
25:06Christ's
25:06actual
25:07witnesses
25:07who should
25:08be actively
25:09employed
25:10in imparting
25:11the knowledge
25:12of what
25:13that truth
25:13had
25:13to others
25:19there came
25:20a scribe
25:21and his
25:21words
25:21sounded
25:22fairly
25:22master
25:24I will
25:24follow thee
25:25wherever
25:25you go
25:29they remind
25:30us a little
25:30of the
25:31great-hearted
25:31words
25:32of
25:32iti
25:33to
25:33David
25:35surely
25:36in what
25:36place
25:37my lord
25:37the king
25:37shall be
25:38whether in
25:39life or
25:39death
25:40even there
25:41also
25:41will your
25:42servant
25:42be
25:43to
25:44Samuel
25:4515
25:4521
25:47nor is
25:48there any
25:49reason to
25:49suppose that
25:50this hope
25:51for hopeful
25:52of discipleship
25:54and to which
25:55all discipleship
25:56might involve
25:56meant at
25:58the time
25:58otherwise
25:59than he
25:59spoke
26:01and yet
26:02there is
26:03not in
26:04him
26:04that true
26:05devotion to
26:06Christ
26:06which would
26:07otherwise
26:08lead him
26:08to follow
26:09that lord
26:10in this
26:11world
26:12that is
26:13in the
26:13world
26:13to come
26:15he shall
26:16be free
26:16to follow
26:16him

26:17he goes

26:23these words
26:24have more
26:24in them
26:25of Peter's
26:26confident
26:26assertion
26:28lord i am
26:29ready to go
26:29with thee

27:24nor does
27:25this answer
27:25of christ
27:26come out
27:27to us
27:27in all
27:28its depths
27:28of meaning
27:29until we
27:30realise
27:30that hour
27:31when upon

27:33he bowed
27:33his head
27:34not having

27:56meant
27:56merely
27:57and only
27:57to repel
