10:50Blessed are those slaves whom their master finds alert when he returns.
10:54I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, have them take their place at the
11:00table and will come and wait upon them.
11:03Even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night and finds them alert.

11:13Understand this, if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he
11:17would not have let his house be broken into.
11:20You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect

12:20That servant who knew his master's will but did not get ready, nor do what his master asked,
12:25will receive a severe beating.
12:28But the one who did not know his master's will and did things worthy of punishment will
12:33receive a light beating.
12:35From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, and from the one who has been entrusted
12:42with much, even more will be asked.
12:47I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled.
12:52I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is finished.
12:58Do you think I have come to bring peace on earth?
13:01No, I tell you, but rather division.
13:05For from now on there will be five in one household divided, three against two, and two against three.

13:27Jesus said to the crowds, when you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once,

13:36When you see the south wind blowing, you say, there will be scorching heat, and there is.
13:41You hypocrites!
13:43You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky.
13:48But how can you not know as we interpret the present time?
13:52Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?
13:57As you are going with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way,
14:02so that he will not drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer,
14:08and the officer throw you in prison.
14:10I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the very last cent.
14:17This is the word of the Lord.
14:20Thanks be to God.
14:27In one of his clearest warnings of the final judgment,
14:31Jesus provides us with the example of the slaves or servants who are waiting for the bridegroom to return from
14:37the wedding celebration.
14:39Just as they were expected to be ready and waiting regardless of the time of day or night of his
14:44arrival,
14:45so we are also called to be alert, ready and waiting.
14:51Just as the servants did not know the hour of the master's return,
14:55we also are unaware of the hour of the master's return.
14:59Just as the servants knew he would return,
15:02we have also been retold repeatedly that he will come.
15:07The time is a secret of heaven that only the Father himself knows.
15:14Let us beware then of falling into complacency,
15:17for every moment of the day or of the night could be our last.
15:22Let no sin ever pass unconfessed and unforgiven.
15:26But let us continually examine ourselves for the things that cause us trouble.
15:31If we find ourselves falling into a particular sin on a regular basis,
15:36pray and meditate on our behaviour that we might find a way to avoid the circumstances that give rise to
15:42that sin.
15:45Suppose, for example, that when we are tired, we tend to become irritable.
15:51Let us try and order our lives so that we can be more certain of getting sufficient sleep or rest.
15:58Above all, let us use the weapons in our armoury to fight off indifference,
16:03the thought that it will not be today or tonight.
16:07There are those who are terminally ill, who are determined to live life to the max while they can.
16:13And while not following in their example exactly, we can adopt that sentiment and live our lives to the max,
16:21cleansing and nurturing our soul to the very best possible health as all times.
16:30Having given the general warning about keeping alert, in response to the question posed by Peter,
16:36Jesus issued an even stronger warning to those called to leadership in the church.
16:42As we have already considered, we know that Jesus is returning, but we do not know the hour.
16:48It is our duty to be in a constant state of preparation.
16:53Those of us who are shepherds to his flock carry a special burden, for they have been especially
16:59warmed to be watchful and to ensure that the flock is properly prepared.
17:05In the words of Jesus, the servant who knew the master was coming, but failed in his preparation, will get
17:12a severe beating.
17:16Jesus will not return unexpectedly, for time and time again he has told us he is coming, and therefore he
17:23is expected.
17:26As I have pointed out though, it is easy for us to backslide in our preparation.
17:32When we first become Christians, we are busy with the broom, clearing out the old and replacing with the new,
17:38trimming our lamps and keeping vigil.
17:41However, every day that passes, we are tempted more and more to think that he will not come today.
17:49How dangerous this is, and how totally illogical.
17:52With every day that passes, his return becomes more likely, not less likely.
17:58Unless, of course, we call him a liar, and say that he will not ever come.
18:05No, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, he is coming, and his arrival is 2,000 years nearer than
18:12it was before.
18:14Every day we must heighten our vigilance, our preparation and our prayerfulness.
18:20Those of us in positions of leadership must continually inspect the troops, to make sure that they are ready and
18:27fit for purpose, spiritually.
18:30Or risk our punishment for incompetence.
18:37We conclude with a passage which seems to be counter to what Jesus had taught previously.
18:43He said he wanted to set the earth on fire, and bring division within families.
18:49For someone who preached love and peace, this seems to be a little strange.
18:53But let us take two ideas in order.
18:59First of all, Jesus said he had come to bring fire to the earth.
19:05Again, there are two aspects to this.
19:09In the Holy Land, it is customary to regularly burn the undergrowth in the spring,
19:15before it becomes too dangerous, so that the trees and the crops are not swallowed up and starved of the
19:21precious water.
19:24So we can see that to his audience, there was this concept of cleansing.
19:29As the land was periodically cleansed of its undesirable elements,
19:34so should we be cleansed of our sins, our impurities, and made perfect in his sight.
19:41And then we have the fire of the Holy Spirit, that which we encountered at the Pentecost,
19:46the Comforter, the Motivator, the Inspiration, and the Protector.
19:52When the Holy Spirit descended at first Pentecost,
19:55it was as a flame that settled on the faithful, gathered in their room.
20:01In this way, and filled with the Holy Spirit,
20:05the followers of Christ went out to the four corners of the earth,
20:08and spread the Gospel to any who would listen,
20:10and continue to do so to this very day.
20:14If we say that someone is burning or on fire,
20:17we do not normally mean that he has flames coming from his body.
20:22No, we mean he is burning with passion.
20:25In our case, a passion for Jesus,
20:27and a desire to tell others what we know of him.
20:34And then we come to the problem of Jesus telling us
20:36that he came to set members of families against each other.
20:41This is not intentional upon his part,
20:44but is a by-product of his very being and coming,
20:48because some will believe and others will refuse even to listen.
20:52A conflict between those who are for Christ and those who are not.
20:59For Jesus told us that if you are not for him,
21:02you must therefore be against him.
21:07Matthew 12.30 says,
21:10Whoever is not with me is against me,
21:12and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
21:17It follows therefore that in every family,
21:19we are warned that for each that gathers in the name of the Lord,
21:22there will be one who destroys.
21:26If we have a family that is united in its faith,
21:29we are exceptionally blessed.
21:31For it seems even in Christian families,
21:34there can be those whose faith is lukewarm or nominal.
21:38Those who resent going to church,
21:41who consider going to church of burden,
21:43and who seek excuses for not going.
21:48So, we are warned.
21:49Let us pray that we can indeed stand united as families,
21:53firm in our faith,
21:55and on fire with the zeal of the Holy Spirit.
22:02Having taught the disciples
22:04their grave responsibility in keeping their flock in a state of preparation,
22:09Jesus turned to the people at large,
22:11the crowd attending,
22:12and had strong words for them.
22:15He used the example of the weather,
22:17which is one that we can all understand.
22:21We see clouds blowing up on the mountains on the horizon,
22:24and our experience of life tells us that we will expect a storm.
22:30Those Jews to whom he was speaking would have heard the words taught by the prophets in their synagogues,
22:37and so they would have known very well what to expect from the Messiah.
22:41But even so, they failed to grasp the significance of what they saw and heard for themselves.
22:48This is a warning for all of us.
22:50We are all going to be presented before God's judgment bar.
22:55We do not know the date or the time,
22:57but we know that we are going,
22:59that one day his bailiffs will come and take us away.
23:03However,
23:04we have one opportunity through Jesus to settle out of court,
23:08our differences with God.
23:11To have our debts forgiven and wiped away,
23:14so that when we are presented in court,
23:16our charge sheet is clean and we have no debts.
23:22There is not one single person in the world
23:24who would want to spend eternity in the prison
23:27where the devil is the jailer.
23:34Let us pray.
23:37O God,
23:38who has prepared for those who love you
23:40such good things as past man's understanding,
23:44pour into our hearts
23:45such love toward you
23:47that we, loving you above all things,
23:50may obtain your promises
23:52which exceed all
23:54that we can desire.
23:56Through Jesus Christ,
