13:34gave him an account of how the blood of St. Galileans
13:36had been mixed by Pilate with their offerings.
13:41Jesus in answer said to them,
13:43Are you of the opinion that these Galileans
13:46were worse than all other Galileans
13:48because of the things that were done to them?
13:51I say to you, it is not so.
13:53But if your hearts are not changed,
13:56you will all come to the same end.
13:59Or those eighteen men who were crushed
14:01by the fall of the Tower of Siloam,
14:03were they worse than all the other men
14:05living in Jerusalem?
14:08I say to you, it is not so.
14:10But if your hearts are not changed,
14:13you will all come to an end in the same way.
14:17He made up this story for them.
14:20A certain man had a fig tree in the garden
14:23and he came to get fruit from it
14:25and there was no fruit.
14:27He said to the gardener,
14:28See, for three years I have been looking for fruit
14:31from this tree and I have not had any.
14:34Let it be cut down.
14:36Why does it take up space?
14:39The guard said,
14:42Lord, let it be for this year
14:44and I will have the earth turned up around it
14:46and put animal waste on it to make it fertile.
14:50If after that it has fruit, it is well.
14:53If not, let it be cut down.
15:00He was teaching in one of the synagogues
15:02on the Sabbath day.
15:03Behold, there was a woman
15:05who had a period of infirmity for 18 years
15:11and she was bent over
15:12and in no way could she straighten herself up.
15:16When Jesus saw her,
15:18he called to her and said,
15:20Woman, you are free from your infirmity.
15:23He laid his hands upon her
15:24and immediately she stood up straight
15:27and gave glory to God.
15:31The ruler of the synagogue,
15:33being indignant because Jesus had healed
15:35on the Sabbath,
15:36said to the multitude,
15:38There are six days in which men ought to work.
15:41Therefore come on those days and be healed,
15:43but not on the Sabbath.
15:46The Lord answered him,
15:48You hypocrites!
15:50Doesn't each one of you free his ox
15:52or his donkey from the stall on the Sabbath
15:54and lead him away to water?
15:57Ought not this woman,
15:59being a daughter of Abraham,
16:01whom Satan had burned 18 years long,
16:04be freed from this bondage on the Sabbath day?
16:08As he said these things,
16:10all his adversaries were disappointed
16:12and the multitude rejoiced
16:14for all the glorious things
16:15that were being done by them.
16:18This is the word of the Lord.
16:21Thanks be to God.
16:27Jesus gives us an interesting insight
16:29into the workings of God's justice.
16:33He referred to 18 men who were killed
16:35when the tower fell upon them.
16:37Were they more guilty than any others?
16:41No, we are told.
16:43But the other guilty men had better watch out,
16:46because God is after them too
16:48and will catch up with them on another occasion.
16:52The problem for us is that we have a confusion about death,
16:56mixing the concept of a long life
16:58with one of righteousness.
17:01There is no link.
17:03God will send for us when it pleases him.
17:07Let us consider for a moment
17:09the example of the great patriarchs of Genesis,
17:13in particular, Enoch and his son Methuselah.
17:18Enoch lived to be 365 years old before he died,
17:23whereas his son went on to be 969 when he died.
17:28We are told that Enoch walked with God,
17:32so we can assume that he led
17:34an almost perfect and righteous life.
17:39If we do the maths,
17:40we can propose that the son Methuselah died in the flood,
17:45and we are told nothing about him
17:47to suggest he led anything approaching a righteous life.
17:52Consider also how many of the greatest saints
17:55died at a young age.
17:57Truly, there is no correlation
17:59between age and righteousness.
18:03The point is that we all have a defined period
18:06in which we can prove our worth to God.
18:09We do not know ourselves how long this will be,
18:12but right now we have an opportunity
18:15to produce fruit,
18:17to be righteous in his sight,
18:18before our hourglass runs out.
18:24Repent, says Jesus,
18:25for God's justice will surely catch up with you sooner or later,
18:29and deal with you accordingly.
18:32Our time might run out suddenly,
18:35like those killed by the falling tower,
18:37so we need to make sure we are always in place,
18:41and acceptable before God.
18:48Jesus found himself on the Sabbath day in a synagogue,
18:52and being in the right place at the right time,
18:55he found something more than he presumably were to seek.
19:00We have our minds directed to our Lord's opportunity
19:04at the use he made of it.
19:07He found this in the presence of human infirmity.
19:11He saw a woman who had been afflicted in body for eighteen years.
19:14She was bowed together.
19:17Not only was she subjected
19:19to very considerable proliferation,
19:22but as one whose figure was uncomely,
19:24she was exposed to the ridicule
19:26of the flippant and the heartless.
19:29And this without break,
19:30for a very large proportion of human life.
19:34Here was a most fitting object of tender pity,
19:37and if the way were clear of divine help.
19:42We mark the ready exhibition of his sympathy.
19:47Lie instantly.
19:48He instantly spoke to her words of cheer and kindliness,
19:53awaking such hopes as she had not cherished
19:56for many a long year.
19:57And then he laid upon her a healing touch.
20:00He laid his hands upon her.
20:04It means much when God lays his hands upon us.
20:08It meant everything to this woman
20:09with a new hope in her heart
20:11that this kind, strong prophet
20:13laid his hand of love and power upon her body.
20:17Then she felt how near he had come to her.
20:20How close at hand was the delivering power.
20:25Then came the exercise of his benign power.
20:29A great, as well as a good work, was wrought.
20:34The injury done by long disease
20:36was undone at a single moment.
20:39The rigidity of eighteen years
20:41was immediately removed.
20:44The great header, raised to the false stature
20:48and to the dignity and capacity
20:50of perfect woodenhood,
20:51one who had been helplessly
20:53and hopelessly disfigured and crippled.
20:58He called forth from her
20:59and from all who witnessed his work
21:02reverent and grateful joy.
21:04She and they rejoiced and glorified God.
21:09We see also an opportunity for ourselves
21:15in the presence of human wrong
21:17and its manifold consequences.
21:20Around us are ignorance,
21:22unbelief,
21:24vice, crime and sin.
21:26Around us therefore are poverty,
21:28want,
21:28suffering,
21:29shame,
21:30degradation
21:30and death.
21:33No man who has eyes to see
21:35for the condition of his kind
21:37can fail to see day by day
21:39some pitiful object
21:40that may well excite
21:41his deepest and tenderest compassion.
21:44Men and women all too many
21:46whom sin has bowed down
21:48and who can in no way
21:50lift themselves up.
21:54How do we show our sympathy?
21:57How shall we show our feeling
21:58of regret and of desire?
22:00By our voice.
22:02By speaking the kind,
22:04true,
22:05enlightening,
22:06hope-giving word.
22:08By our touch.
22:10We shall not succeed without this.
22:13To take a man by the hand
22:14or to lay a brotherly hand
22:16upon his shoulder
22:17is to come into
22:18healing contact
22:19with him.
22:21It is to come near
22:22to the one we are seeking
22:23to bless.
22:24It is to give him the sense
22:26that instead of
22:27standing aloof
22:28we feel and own
22:29and claim our brotherhood
22:30with him.
22:32It is to stand
22:33on the same level with him.
22:35The level of our
22:36common humanity.
22:37Our erring,
22:38striving,
22:39suffering,
22:40aspiring humanity.
22:42It is to be
22:43where the healing
22:43and restoring power
22:45can be exercised
22:46and received.
22:50Then we have the results
22:52of our healing touch.
22:53We exert the influence
22:55that elevates.
22:56The first result
22:57is enlightenment
22:58concerning himself.
23:00Then faith
23:00in the divine saviour.
23:02Then uprightness
23:03of character
23:04and erectness
23:05of spirit.
23:06The man is made straight.
23:08He is no longer
23:09bowed down
23:10in spiritual bondage
23:11with eyes directed
23:12to the earth.
23:13He stands erect
23:15in spiritual freedom,
23:16in purity of heart,
23:18in a large
23:19and blessed hopefulness.
23:21He has attained
23:22through the influence
23:23of Christian love
23:24a noble elevation.
23:26From now on
23:27he will walk
23:28in the way of life
23:29with true dignity
23:30in gladness of soul,
23:32giving glory
23:33glory to the great healer.
23:49the Lord.
