00:22Let us pray.
00:50Let us pray.
00:54And through your mercy be introduced as an adopted son into the heavenly inheritance.
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who in the midst of reproach and injury bore your cross
01:07with excessive pain on your sacred and cut shoulders.
01:13Wearied and panting for breath, you toiled exceedingly under its heavy weight.
01:19Give me grace to take hold of the cross of self-denial with ardent devotion, and to imitate with the
01:25most fervent of charity the example of your virtues, and to follow you in humility even unto death.
01:38Let us pray.
01:47Let us pray.
01:49Draw me after you, that I may quickly follow. Grant that for your sake I may entirely deny, forsake, and
01:57go out of myself.
01:59Give me grace to think of you alone and to find no joy except in you, my Redeemer.
02:07Grant that I may love you alone, and may return love for love. May I earnestly seek after you, and
02:14live to you alone.
02:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who when bowed down by the weight of your cross, at
02:24length reached the place of punishment, where, quite exhausted, they offered you wine mingled with gall.
02:34May you extinguish in me all. May you extinguish in me all gluttonous and carnal desire, giving me grace never
02:40to consent to any impure or unlawful pleasure.
02:45But may I take my food in moderation, to the glory of your name, and may hunger and thirst after
02:51you alone, and find no pleasure or gladness except in you.
02:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who was stripped before the gaze of all people on Mount
03:04Calvary, and the soreness of your wounds being increased by the removal of your clothing.
03:11You did not refuse to undergo, for my sake, the most dreadful pain.
03:17Grant that I may love the spirit of poverty, and never be disturbed by want or scarcity.
03:24Give me grace to bear patiently any difficulties or troubles in this life, for the glory of your name.
03:31Strip my heart of every vain fancy and affection, and grant me a holy intent, with pious desires, renewing within
03:41me daily a most pure love for yourself.
03:45Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who gave himself up to be extended, naked, upon the wood
03:53of the cross, and the joints of your most holy limbs to be wrenched apart, most cruelly nailed and fastened
04:00thereto.
04:02Then, for my sake, you suffered your most delicate hands and feet, to be most deeply wounded.
04:10Grant, O Lord, that I might remember, with a faithful and grateful heart, this your unspeakable charity,
04:19when you did, of your own accord, stretch out your hands to be bald, and your feet to be pierced
04:25through.
04:26O Lord, enlarge and extend my heart by perfect love of you.
04:31Pierce it and fix it to yourself with the nail of your sweetest love,
04:36and shut up within yourself alone all my senses, all my thoughts, and all my affections.
04:44Amen.
04:48O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
04:59O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:12Present with us, let NOT olla in their heart,
05:16Be sure that a Lord, ele is God,
05:23It is He that can定 us, that God we ourselves,
05:28We are His people, and the sheep of His w bild.
05:34O joy, O lady, to this district and tree, and into this God's great place,
05:46be thankful unto him and speak to the Lord of his name.
05:54O the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endures from generation to generation.
06:17Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
06:29as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end,
06:42and ever shall be, world without end.
06:58O sing unto the Lord a new song, sing unto the Lord of the earth,
07:08sing unto the Lord and praise his name,
07:14be telling of his salvation from day to day.
07:19If there is honour unto the river, and is conquered unto the river.
07:29For the Lord is great, and cannot worthy be played.
07:37He is more to be paid than all ones.
07:42As for the Lord of the hills, they are but islands, but it is the Lord that made the end.
08:00she is no longer than enough for the Lord of the things,
08:12has that ever shall be addressed.
08:18He is the Father, true of them, and oneward of his breaking mois.
08:23Bring presents and come into his arms.
08:30Who worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness?
08:36Let the whole earth stand in love.
08:42Carry down upon the heathen that the Lord is faithful.
08:48And that it is he who hath made the love world so fast that it cannot be proved.
08:56And how that we shall judge the people rightously.
09:02Let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad.
09:07Let the sea be the noise and all that wherever it is.
09:13Let the field be joyful and all that is in it.
09:20Then shall all the trees of the world rejoice before the Lord.
09:28For he come, for he come to judge the earth.
09:35And with righteousness to judge the world and the people where he is true.
09:47Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
09:56As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shining.
10:05World without end.
10:11Amen.
10:23The Gospel according to St. Matthew, chapters 6 and 7
10:32Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth,
10:36where moth and devouring insect destroy,
10:40and where thieves break in and steal.
10:43Rather, accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven,
10:47where moth and devouring insect do not destroy,
10:50and thieves cannot break in and steal.
10:53For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.
11:00The eye is the lamp of your body.
11:04If then your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
11:08But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be full of darkness.
11:13If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness.
11:20No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other,
11:25or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
11:31You cannot serve God and money.
11:35Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life,
11:37what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear.
11:42Isn't there not more to life than food,
11:45and more to the body than its clothes?
11:49Look at the birds in the sky.
11:51They do not sow or reap or gather into barns,
11:54and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
11:58Are you not more valuable than they?
12:02And which of you, by worrying, can add even one hour to his life?
12:08So why do you worry about what you wear?
12:11Think of the flowers of the field.
12:14They do not work or spin.
12:16And yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory
12:19was not clothed like one of these.
12:22If this is how God clothes the wild grass,
12:26which is here today and tomorrow tossed into the fire to heat the oven,
12:34won't he clothe you even more, you people of little faith?
12:38So then don't worry, saying,
12:41what shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear?
12:46For the unconverted pursue these things,
12:50and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
12:53But above all, pursue his kingdom and the righteousness,
12:57and these things shall be given to you.
13:01So then do not worry about tomorrow,
13:04for tomorrow will worry about its sake.
13:08Today has enough trouble of its own.
13:13Do not judge, so that you will not be judged yourselves.
13:17For by the standard you judge,
13:20you also will be judged.
13:24And the measure you use will be the measure you receive.
13:31Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye,
13:34but fail to see the beam of wood in your own?
13:37How can you say to your brother,
13:39let me remove the speck from your eye,
13:42while there is a beam in your own?
13:45Hypocrite!
13:46First, remove the beam from your own eye,
13:49and then you will be able to see clearly
13:52to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
13:58This is the word of the Lord.
14:01Thanks be to God.
14:11From this point onwards,
14:14the plan of the discord of the Sermon on the Mount
14:16is not quite so apparent,
14:18and some have given up on the idea
14:21of finding any sort of orderly sequence in it.
14:25And yet there seems to be no insuperable difficulty
14:29when the right place of view is taken.
14:36The perplexity seems to have arisen
14:39from supposing that at this point
14:41an entirely new subject begins,
14:45whereas all that follows on,
14:47as far as Matthew 7, verse 12,
14:50arranges itself under the same general heading,
14:53the righteousness of the kingdom.
14:58According to this arrangement of the discourse,
15:01there is an introduction of 14 verses,
15:05chapter 5, verses 3 to 16,
15:07and a concluding passage of almost exactly the same length,
15:11chapter 7, 13 to 27.
15:14While the main discourse occupies nearly three chapters,
15:18the subject throughout being the righteousness of the kingdom,
15:22dealt with first as morality,
15:25the second as religion,
15:27and finally as spirituality,
15:30beginning and ending with a general reference to the law and the prophets.
15:37The first of these divisions had to do with righteousness as between man and man,
15:43the second with righteousness before God alone,
15:48and the third,
15:49on the consideration of which we are entering today,
15:53deals with righteousness as between the children of the kingdom
15:57and the world in the midst of which it is set up.
16:02And just as in the paragraphs already considered,
16:05we have shown that our Lord came
16:07not to destroy but to fulfil the code of ethics,
16:13the rules for divine service in the law and the prophets.
16:18And so in this it will be made equally apparent
16:21that he came not to destroy but to fulfil the principles involved in the political code
16:27by which Israel was separated from the nations of the world
16:31to be the Lord's peculiar people.
16:38It is true that under the head of oaths
16:41comes the duty of reverence
16:43which scarcely seems to fall under this head.
16:47But it will be remembered
16:48that this point comes in by way of a very natural suggestion
16:52in dealing with falsehood
16:54and the regulation of conversation
16:56which evidently belongs to righteousness
16:59as between man and man.
17:04The subject before us, therefore,
17:07is the relationship of the children of the kingdom
17:09to the world
17:11and it is dealt with in this way.
17:15Firstly, as regard the good things of the world
17:19from the Beatitudes
17:21we have already learnt
17:22that the blessedness of the children
17:24of the kingdom
17:25is to consist not in the abundance
17:28of the things they possess
17:29but in the qualities of soul
17:31possessions
17:33in the realms
17:34of the unseen.
17:37And yet, the children of the kingdom
17:39cannot do without the good things of this world.
17:42What then has the law of the kingdom to say
17:45in regard to their acquisition and use?
17:49This is a large and difficult subject
17:52but with amazing clearness and force
17:55comprehensive and simple practical utility
17:59it is set out in a single paragraph
18:02which is characterised by a surprising beauty of language.
18:09As before
18:10the straight and narrow path
18:12is marked by cautions
18:14to the right and to the left
18:16on the one side
18:18must be shunned
18:19to the scylla of greed
18:20and on the other
18:22the cherybdis of care.
18:26The one is the real danger
18:28of seeking too much
18:29on the other
18:30the supposed danger
18:32of having too little
18:33of the good things of life.
18:37But it is not, however
18:39a question of quantity
18:41as before
18:42it is a question
18:43of the heart.
18:44On the one hand
18:46it is not the danger
18:47of having too much
18:48but of seeking too much.
18:50On the other
18:51it is not the danger
18:53of having too little
18:54but of fearing
18:55there will not be enough.
18:58It is a mistake, therefore
19:00to say that the one caution
19:02is for the rich
19:03and the other for the poor.
19:06True, indeed
19:08the rich are in greater danger
19:09of the scylla
19:10than of the cherybdis
19:12and the poor
19:13in more peril
19:15from the pool
19:16than of the rock.
19:18And still a rich man
19:20may often be
19:21a victim of care
19:23while a poor man
19:24may have his heart
19:26set too much
19:27on the yearly
19:28or weekly increase
19:29of his little store.
19:32It may seem better then
19:34to make no distinction
19:35of classes
19:36but to look at each caution
19:38as needed by all.
19:45Again
19:46we should look
19:48at the dangers
19:49of seeking the good things
19:51of the world
19:51too earnestly.
19:53It is important
19:55to notice
19:55the strong emphasis
19:57on the word
19:57treasure.
19:59This is evident
20:00not only
20:01from the reduplication
20:02of it
20:03for the literal
20:05translation
20:05would be
20:07treasure not
20:08for yourselves
20:08treasures upon the earth
20:10but also
20:11for the reason
20:12it is assigned
20:13in
20:14verse 21
20:16where the treasure
20:18is
20:18there your heart
20:20will be also.
20:25It is clear then
20:26that there is no
20:27pre-prohibition
20:29of wealth
20:29but only
20:31of making it
20:31treasure
20:33but against this
20:35the law
20:36of the kingdom
20:36is in the highest
20:38degree decided
20:39and uncompromising.
20:42The language
20:43is exceedingly
20:45forcible
20:45and the reasons
20:47marshaled
20:47are terribly strong
20:49with all
20:50the faithfulness
20:51and with
20:52growing earnestness
20:53the master
20:55shows that
20:55to disobey
20:56this law
20:57is foolish
20:58pernicious
20:59and fatal.
21:01It is foolish
21:03for all
21:04earthly treasures
21:05are perishable
21:06eaten
21:07by moth
21:08consumed
21:08by rust
21:10stolen
21:11by thieves
21:12while the heavenly
21:13treasures
21:14of the spiritually
21:15minded
21:15are incorruptible
21:17and safe
21:18forevermore.
21:21It is not only
21:22foolish
21:22but pernicious
21:24in extreme
21:26injurious
21:26to that
21:27which is the
21:28most sensitive
21:29and most precious
21:30in this life
21:31that
21:32which is to the soul
21:34what the eye
21:35is to the body
21:36the darkening
21:37of which
21:38means the darkening
21:39of the whole body
21:40not the mere
21:42clouding
21:42of the vision
21:43but the condition
21:45suggested
21:46by the awful words
21:47full of darkness
21:49while the corresponding
21:51deterioration
21:52in the lower
21:53ranges of life
21:54is indicated
21:55by what follows
21:58if therefore
21:59the light
21:59that is in you
22:00be darkness
22:00how great
22:02is that darkness
22:05it is therefore
22:06not only foolish
22:07and most pernicious
22:08but fatal
22:09for no man
22:10can serve
22:11two masters
22:13so that
22:14to set the heart
22:15on the world
22:15means to give up
22:17the kingdom
22:19it is indeed
22:20vain to try
22:21to satisfy
22:22two claimants
22:23of the heart
22:23for one
22:25or the other
22:25must be chosen
22:26you cannot
22:28serve God
22:29and none
22:35but then again
22:37we are warned
22:39about anxiety
22:39of the things
22:40of the world
22:42take no thought
22:44of these things
22:45to modern ears
22:47these words
22:48seem to encourage
22:49thoughtlessness
22:50and to bless
22:52improvidence
22:54however
22:55it contains
22:56no such idea
22:59to take thought
23:00meant to be anxious
23:02as will appear
23:04from a passage
23:04such as that
23:05in the first book
23:06of Samuel
23:07chapter 9
23:08verse 5
23:09where Saul
23:10says to his servant
23:12come
23:13let us return
23:14lest our father
23:16leave caring
23:16for the asses
23:17and take thought
23:18for us
23:20evidently
23:21the sense
23:22of this
23:22is to be
23:23anxious
23:24about us
23:26it is then
23:27manifestly
23:29not against
23:29thoughtfulness
23:30and providence
23:32but against
23:33anxious care
23:34that caution
23:36is directed
23:39although this
23:40evil seems
23:41to lie
23:41in the opposite
23:42direction
23:42from that
23:43of avarice
23:44it is really
23:45the same
23:45both in root
23:46and fruit
23:47for it is due
23:49to the estrangement
23:50of the heart
23:51from our father
23:51in heaven
23:53amounting
23:54in so far
23:54as it prevails
23:55to enslavement
23:57to the things
23:57of the world
24:00the covetous
24:01man is enslaved
24:02in one way
24:02the anxious
24:03in another
24:05for does not
24:06our common
24:06language
24:07betray it
24:08every time
24:09we speak
24:09of freedom
24:10from care
24:14we do not
24:14wonder then
24:15that our lord
24:16should connect
24:16what he is
24:17about to say
24:18on this evil
24:19so closely
24:20with what he
24:21has said
24:22on the other
24:24as he says
24:25by using
24:26the word
24:26therefore
24:27I say to you
24:28do not be
24:29anxious
24:30for your life
24:33but though
24:34like the other
24:35it is a form
24:36of slavery
24:36the sin of it
24:37is not nearly
24:38so great
24:39and hence
24:40the difference
24:41of tone
24:42which we cannot
24:43help observe
24:44as this new
24:46caution is given
24:47it is no longer
24:48strong condemnation
24:50but a gentle
24:52expostulation
24:53not dark
24:54threatening now
24:55but tender
24:56pleading
24:57as before
24:59reason
24:59after reason
25:00is given
25:01against yielding
25:03to the all
25:03too natural
25:04weaknesses
25:05of the human
25:06part
25:06we are encouraged
25:08to remember
25:09what god
25:10has already
25:10given
25:11the life
25:12with such
25:13amazing
25:13powers
25:14and capabilities
25:15the body
25:16with all
25:17its marvellous
25:18intricacies
25:19and adaption
25:20and can it
25:22be supposed
25:22that he is
25:23likely to
25:24withhold
25:24the food
25:25to maintain
25:26the life
25:26or the raiment
25:28to clothe
25:29the body
25:29to remember
25:31how the little
25:31birds of the air
25:32and the modest
25:33lilies of the field
25:34are not forgotten
25:36how then
25:37can we think
25:38that our own
25:38father would
25:39forget us
25:40who are of so
25:41much value
25:42more than they
25:45to remember
25:46that the very
25:47fact that we
25:47know him
25:48as our father
25:49should be
25:49guarantee enough
25:51preventing us
25:52from any
25:53anxious
25:54solicitude
25:54pardonable
25:55in the
25:56heathen
25:56who have
25:57no such
25:58knowledge
25:58of a father
25:59in heaven
25:59who knows
26:00exactly
26:01what his
26:01children
26:02need
26:03to remember
26:04how vain
26:04also
26:05and fruitless
26:06is our
26:07care
26:07saying that
26:08we cannot
26:09in the very
26:10smallest way
26:11lengthen
26:12the very
26:12life
26:13for which
26:13we fret
26:14while our
26:15times
26:15are wholly
26:16in the
26:17hand
26:17of him
26:18who gave
26:19it to us
26:19first
26:20and daily
26:21satisfies
26:22its wants
26:24such
26:25is a
26:26bare
26:26outline
26:26of the
26:27thought
26:27in this
26:27passage
26:28to attempt
26:29to expound
26:30or illustrate
26:30which would
26:31be to
26:32spoil it
26:34the best
26:35way to deal
26:35with such
26:36a passage
26:36is first
26:37to study
26:38it
26:38and then
26:39carefully
26:40to see
26:40its meaning
26:41and the
26:42point
26:42that all
26:43its parts
26:44are clearly
26:44understood
26:46and then
26:47quietly
26:47slowly
26:48and lovingly
26:49read it
26:50over
26:50and let
26:51its heavenly
26:51music
26:52enter the
26:53soul
26:54then
26:54when the
26:55reading
26:55is finished
26:56and the
26:56great lesson
26:57has filled
26:58the heart
26:58with trusting
26:59love
26:59we may
27:00look back
27:01upon it
27:01and observe
27:02that not only
27:03is a great
27:04spiritual lesson
27:05being taught
27:06but incidentally
27:08we are encouraged
27:09and directed
27:10to interrogate
27:11nature
27:12and learn
27:13what she has
27:14to teach us
27:14to gaze
27:16on her
27:16beauty
27:16and lovingly
27:18look at what
27:18she has to
27:19show
27:21what we find
27:22as it were
27:23by the way
27:24in the simple
27:24words of our
27:25king
27:25the germ
27:26principles
27:27of science
27:28and of art
27:31but
27:32these are
27:33mere
27:34wayside
27:35pearls
27:35and no special
27:37attention
27:37is called
27:38to them
27:40these glimpses
27:42of nature
27:42come so naturally
27:43from the
27:44lord of nature
27:44that nothing
27:45is made
27:46of them
27:46they flash
27:48along the
27:48cords
27:49and go
27:49and we
27:50return
27:51to the
27:52great lesson
27:52which
27:53now that
27:54the
27:54cautions
27:54have been
27:55given
27:55can be put
27:56in its
27:57positive
27:57form
27:59seek you
28:00first
28:00the kingdom
28:01of god
28:01and his
28:03righteousness
28:03and all
28:04these things
28:05shall be
28:05added to
28:06you
28:09seek first
28:10his kingdom
28:10and his
28:11righteousness
28:13already as we
28:14have seen
28:14this lesson
28:15has been
28:16implied in the
28:16lord's prayer
28:18but it
28:18is well
28:19that it
28:19should be
28:20expressly
28:20set down
28:21here
28:21as this
28:23will ensure
28:23that the
28:24treasure
28:24is proper
28:25and above
28:26that the
28:27eye is
28:27clear
28:28that the
28:28life is
28:29one
28:29and all
28:30these
28:30things
28:30shall be
28:31added
28:31so that
28:32tomorrow
28:32need not
28:33trouble you
28:34trouble
28:35there must
28:36and will
28:36be in the
28:37world
28:37but no one
28:39need have
28:39more
28:40than each
28:40day
28:41brings
28:43sufficient
28:43unto the
28:44day
28:44is the
28:45evil
28:46there
28:46all
28:49I
28:50disregard
28:50the
28:50evil
28:51in the
28:51world
28:51the
28:52transition
28:52from the
28:53good of
28:53the
28:54world
28:54to the
28:54evil
28:55that is
28:55in it
28:55comes
28:56quite
28:56naturally
28:57from the
28:58turn the
28:59master's
28:59thought
28:59has taken
29:00in the
29:01close of
29:01the
29:02previous
29:02paragraph
29:04it is
29:05important to
29:05observe
29:06however
29:07that the
29:08whole
29:08object
29:09of the
29:09evil
29:09in the
29:10world
29:10is not
29:10in view
29:11at this
29:11point
29:13has not
29:14the evil
29:14in the
29:14world
29:15in the
29:15large
29:15sense
29:15been in
29:16view
29:16from the
29:16very
29:17beginning
29:18has not
29:19the great
29:19subject of
29:20righteousness
29:20had all
29:21along as
29:22its
29:22background
29:23the dark
29:24drop
29:24of sin
29:27the one
29:27point here
29:28is this
29:29the attitude
29:30of the
29:31children of
29:32the kingdom
29:32to the
29:33evil
29:33which they
29:34cannot see
29:34but see
29:36in the
29:36people of
29:36the world
29:37by whom
29:38they are
29:39surrendered
29:42here as
29:43before we
29:43find two
29:44warnings
29:45each against
29:46the danger
29:47lying in
29:47the opposite
29:48directions
29:49the one
29:50the danger
29:50of taking
29:51too much
29:52of the
29:53evil we
29:54see
29:54or think
29:56we see
29:56in others
29:58the other
29:59that of
29:59making too
30:00little of
30:01it
30:04as
30:05against
