20:26to what then should I compare the people of this generation
20:30what are they like
20:33they are like the children sitting in the marketplace
20:36and calling out to one another
20:38we played the flute for you
20:40yet you did not dance
20:42we wailed in the morning
20:45and yet you did not weep
20:49for John the Baptist has come
20:51eating no bread and drinking no wine
20:53and you say
20:53he is a demon
20:57and the son of man has come eating and drinking
20:59and you say to him
21:00look at him
21:02a glutton and a drunk
21:03a friend of tax collectors and sinners
21:08but wisdom is vindicated by all her children
21:14now one of the Pharisees had asked Jesus
21:16to have dinner with him
21:18and so he went into the Pharisee's house
21:21and took his place at the table
21:24and when a woman of that town
21:26who was a sinner
21:27learnt that Jesus was dining at the Pharisee's house
21:30she brought an alabaster jar of perfumed oil
21:35as she stood behind him at his feet weeping
21:37she began to wet his feet with her tears
21:41and she wiped them with her hair
21:43kissing them
21:44and anointing them with the perfumed oil
21:49now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this
21:52he said to himself
21:53now if this man were a prophet
21:55he would know
21:56who and what kind of woman
21:58this is who touches him
21:59that she is a sinner
22:03so Jesus answered him
22:05Simon I have something to say to you
22:09he replied
22:10say it teacher
22:13a certain creditor had two debtors
22:16one who owed him 500 coins
22:18and the other 50
22:21when they could not pay
22:22he cancelled the debts of both
22:25now which of them will love him more
22:29Simon answered
22:30I suppose the one
22:32who had the bigger debt cancelled
22:35Jesus said to him
22:36you have judged rightly
22:40then he turned toward the woman
22:42and said to Simon
22:43do you see this woman
22:45I entered your house
22:47you gave me no water for my feet
22:49but she has wet my feet with her tears
22:52and wiped them with her hair
22:55you gave me no kiss of greeting
22:57but from the moment I entered
22:59she has not stopped kissing my feet
23:03you did not anoint my head with oil
23:05but she has anointed my feet with perfumed oil

23:16are forgiven

23:31but those who were at the table with him
23:33began to say amongst themselves

24:00as we come to chapter 7
24:02in St Luke's Gospel
24:03we find him giving us
24:05a series of events
24:07miracles that took place
24:09in the life of Jesus
24:14the Roman centurions
24:15were special men
24:16they are mentioned
24:18several times
24:19in the scriptures
24:20and always in a favourable light
24:24they were always
24:25it seems
24:26outstanding men
24:28we remember the Roman centurion
24:30in Cornelius
24:31in Caesarea
24:33it was while he was in prayer
24:35that the Lord spoke to him
24:37and commanded
24:38he sent his servants
24:40to Joppa
24:41in order to fetch Peter
24:43and to teach them
24:44the way of the Lord
24:45more completely
24:47and so it was
24:49in the Roman centurion's house
24:51in Caesarea
24:52that the gospel was first preached
24:54to the Gentiles
24:55and the outpouring
24:57of the Holy Spirit upon him
24:59his house
25:00and all those
25:01who were with him
25:03as God began
25:05his work among
25:05the Gentiles
25:06actually in the house
25:08of a Roman centurion
25:12and so they are mentioned
25:14several times
25:14in the scriptures
25:15in a kind
25:16and favourable light
25:21our centurion of today
25:22in Capernaum
25:24was declared
25:24to be a worthy person
25:26by the Jewish leaders
25:27who came to Jesus
25:29on his behalf
25:32they said that
25:33he was worthy
25:33for whom
25:34he should do this
25:37this is interesting
25:38because the Jewish people
25:39even to this day
25:40and I am certain
25:42that it doesn't have
25:43its roots
25:44in the New Testament
25:45but to the present day
25:47they have awards
25:48that they give
25:49to worthy people
25:50and it is a phrase
25:51that they use
25:52today
25:55I haven't yet
25:57found out
25:59exactly what it is
26:00but I think
26:01it is good
26:03but it is a title
26:04they still give
26:05for people
26:05who have
26:06and I suppose
26:08it's for a person
26:09outside the Jewish faith
26:10who has shown
26:11kindness
26:12and consideration
26:13to the Jews
26:15and such was the case
26:16with the Roman centurion
26:19he had built
26:20a synagogue
26:21for them
26:21and he loved
26:22their nation
26:23and having this
26:24as his credentials
26:25the Jewish leaders
26:26came and asked
26:27Jesus to do
26:28the favour for him
26:29by healing
26:31his servant
26:33it was unusual
26:35for a master
26:36to have a close
26:37relationship
26:37with his servant
26:39servants
26:40in the Roman Empire
26:41had no rights
26:42whatsoever
26:44there was
26:45a Roman writer
26:46who said
26:46that every year
26:47a man should
26:48take stock
26:49of his possessions
26:49and hold on
26:51to that which
26:52still produced
26:52and was of benefit
26:53and get rid
26:55of that which
26:55was no longer
26:56productive
26:58and including
26:59in that getting
27:00rid of
27:00was that
27:02of a slave
27:04who was no longer
27:05capable of doing
27:06a full day's work
27:08and so when he
27:09got to that point
27:10he would be put
27:11out into the street
27:12and left to die
27:13for he had
27:15no other recourse
27:17the slave
27:18was such a part
27:19of possession
27:21of his master
27:22that in the
27:23Roman Empire
27:23a master
27:25could put his
27:25slave to death
27:26and not face
27:27any charges
27:27for it
27:29after all
27:30you were merely
27:31destroying
27:32your own property
27:34so for him
27:35to have this
27:36attitude to a
27:36slave was
27:37most unusual
27:39and it does
27:40show that he
27:41is one of those
27:41men above
27:42the ordinary
27:44he loved the
27:45slave very much
27:46and was concerned
27:47because he was
27:48almost dead
27:51now the
27:52commendation
27:53that the Jewish
27:53leaders had given
27:54to Jesus
27:55is this
27:56the man
27:57is worthy
28:00as he answers
28:01or responds
28:02when he finds out
28:03that Jesus
28:03is getting close
28:04to his house
28:05sending his
28:06friends saying
28:07I am not
28:08worthy that
28:09you should
28:09come under
28:10my roof
28:16neither
28:16do I think
28:17myself worthy
28:18to come
28:19to you
28:22in those
28:22days
28:23it was
28:25unlawful
28:25for a Jew
28:26to enter
28:26the house
28:27of a Gentile
28:29he knew
28:30that for
28:30Jesus to
28:31come into
28:32his house
28:32would put
28:33a strain
28:34upon Jesus
28:37when Peter
28:38entered the
28:39house of
28:39Cornelius
28:40he apologized
28:41for so doing
28:43he had taken
28:44some Jewish
28:44friends with him
28:45from Joppa
28:45and he apologized
28:48he said
28:49you know
28:49it isn't
28:50lawful
28:50for me
28:51to assemble
28:51with you
28:52to come
28:52to this
28:53house
28:53but the
28:54Lord told
28:54me not
28:54to ask
28:55questions
28:55so here
28:56I am
28:57what may
28:58I do

29:05because it
29:06was forbidden
29:07to the Jew

29:29to Jesus
29:30concerning
29:30her daughter
29:32who said
29:33that she
29:33was vexed
29:34by a devil
29:35and Jesus
29:36did not
29:36answer
29:40the disciples
29:41had said
29:42Lord
29:42do something
29:43for her
29:44for she's
29:44bugging us
29:45she's driving
29:46us crazy
29:48and Jesus
29:49had replied
29:49it isn't
29:51right to
29:51give the
29:52children's

31:54dig for

31:58they uncover
31:59them and

32:00leave them

32:01on their
32:01sides
32:01and you
32:02can find
32:03them
32:03everywhere
32:06with the
32:07limestone
32:07the flesh
32:09is eaten
32:09very rapidly
32:12in fact

32:14so and
32:14so the
32:15name
32:15sarcophagus
32:16flesh eater
32:17is appropriate
32:21they would
32:22usually place

36:47was probably
36:48wondering
36:48to himself
36:49from time
36:50to time
36:51how much
36:52longer
36:52am I
36:53going to
36:54sit in
36:55this

38:44of the

38:45to him

38:48the poor

40:46no greater

40:51privileges
40:52that you
40:53have as a
40:53child of
40:54God living
40:54in this
40:55age
40:55are superior
40:56to the
40:57highest
40:57position
40:58under the
40:58old
40:58dispensation
