00:12There are, like, five interceptions were thrown during yesterday's practice, three of those from Deshaun Watson.
00:18And, look, my opinion on the Browns quarterback situation is unchanged.
00:26First, I'm completely unimpressed by it.
00:29Okay, I'm completely unimpressed by the Browns quarterback room as a whole.
00:35But one of these guys has to play.
00:37So I've come to terms with that.
00:41We're going to have to watch one of these guys this year.
00:44What's crazy, though, to me, Daryl, is look at what they did these last two offseasons.
00:50There's so much young talent on this roster.
00:53There's actually so much to be excited about when it comes to Browns football.
00:58They have a big wide receiver for the first time in a decade.
01:02They have a really fast wide receiver that can catch the ball and make plays in multiple different facets of
01:09the game.
01:09They've got a good run game with a young back.
01:11They've got a good, big, tight end.
01:14They've got a top-ranked defense that lost Myles Garrett but found a pretty suitable replacement in Jared Verse.
01:20Other than the most important position in sports and the position that they've obsessed over since they returned to Cleveland
01:30in 1999.
01:30I can't believe, as this has gone on, that there's so much blue-chip young talent.
01:38I'm not afraid to call it that.
01:41I think Denzel Boston could be a thousand-yard receiver in this league if he continues to ascend the way
01:46that he appears to.
01:48I'm talking this year.
01:49I think Quinshawn could be the same kind of player out of the backfield.
01:53So it's like you've got now some real blue-chip pieces on this offense.
02:00How didn't you address the most important position in pro sports?
02:04Well, here's why.

02:07We said it throughout the all-season.
02:07We were debating Ty Simpson.
02:09We were debating Malik Willis.
02:11There were so many opportunities where it felt like you could have gotten off this ride.

02:20One, you're still paying Deshawn $46 million this year.
02:23And that's the reason.

02:27Shador got thrown into an untenable situation last year.
02:32No real meaningful reps.
02:33And then they're like, oh, yeah, by the way, you can start the final seven games of the season.

02:37Or, well, you can start this week, and then we'll see.
02:40And then it became, okay, you can start the rest of the way.

02:42So he got baptism by fire last year with no real meaningful assistance from the coaching staff
02:49on the practice field.

02:52I know Kevin did the 7 a.m. meetings or whatever that was to go over the playbook with him
02:58and go over his film.
02:59But this time last year, he was throwing to ball boys.

03:02So, got to see what you have there because there is something there with Shador.
03:07I don't know what it is right now, but I do feel like there's something there.
03:11The thing that I like most about Shador right now when I watch him is the bailing from the
03:18pocket, or I should say the retreating from the line of scrimmage.
03:22That's what I was going for because he still rolls the pocket left and right.
03:25But the retreating from the line of scrimmage where he was conceding 10, 15, 20 yards,
03:31trying to – he's not doing that stuff anymore.
03:34Okay?
03:34That's huge.
03:36One of the biggest criticisms in his game coming out of Colorado, he has corrected that.

03:43So, let's – so, give him credit for that.
03:46He has made tremendous strides when it comes to pocket presence.
03:50The next thing, and from my standpoint, he needs to do – he's got to get the ball out
03:54faster.
03:54He's got to get through the progressions faster.
03:56He's got to – the processing has to get faster for him.
04:01And I think with experience, that can happen.
04:04So, there's something with him.
04:06Dylan Gabriel.
04:07Well, you spent a third-round pick on this kid last year.
04:10You made him your number two starter on the season once you got rid of Joe Flacco.
04:15You turned the keys over to him.
04:16It was an abject failure despite the fact that you were giving him the meaningful reps
04:22during off-season program and training camp last year.
04:28Then started the season with Joe Flacco, who got no meaningful reps in training camp for
04:33the off-season.
04:33That was so mismanaged.
04:35So, of course it was.
04:36It was a clown show.
04:38It was a joke.
04:39It was a waste of all of our times.
04:41We can't get that time back.
04:43Listen, when I go to the pearly gates, the good Lord doesn't say, hey, Daryl, you had
04:47to waste this amount of time during this training camp or doing this.
04:50I don't get bonus time.
04:52This ain't soccer.
04:53Okay?
04:54I'm not going to get the bonus time for that.
04:56But that's what that was last year.
04:58It was a complete waste of our time.
04:59It was a farce.
05:00And then you've got Green in the mix.
05:03He's a six-round pick.
05:05He's got the physical tools you're looking for.
05:09He's got the size.
05:10He's got the arm talent.
05:12But the game is very, very raw for him.
05:15So that's – I understand your frustration, and I understand why you sit there and you
05:19say, why didn't you address the position?
05:21Well, in their mind, they're like, listen.
05:25Okay, I'll turn – what was out there that the Browns could have gone after that would
05:34have made them a playoff team this year?
05:36It's a good question.
05:36There isn't one.
05:37We don't know anything for sure.
05:39That's fair.
05:40So we might as well see what we already have in the building.

05:44I just – my only pushback on that.
05:46The supporting cast offensively is better.

05:51So we're going to get – and this is why I asked Andrew Barry.

05:59So that's why I asked Andrew Barry about, you know, their evaluation processes, what
06:08goes into that, okay, independent of just charting completions and completions and all
06:13that.
06:13But like – and also, too, I asked him about the fairness of the competition because I
06:19think of the many, many quarterback competitions that the Browns have held in the last 27 years
06:27since coming back into the league, this might be one of the more balanced and fair competitions
06:32from a rep distribution standpoint, from a supporting cast able to help the quarterback
06:40standpoint.
06:42And the supporting cast isn't mature yet.
06:44It's still very young.
06:45You got Harold Fannin Jr. in his second year, Quinshawn Judkins and Dylan Sampson entering
06:49year two.
06:49You got rookies Denzel Boston and Casey Concepcion.
06:53You got the veteran Jerry Judy, who doesn't seem to be pouting as much as he pouted last
06:58year.
06:58Okay?
06:59So, like, it just – it felt – now, Barry disagreed with me and he – well, didn't
07:06disagree, but he didn't want to get into, like, you know, previous competitions and
07:09trying to compare and contrast and all that, which I get being in his shoes.
07:13But, like, they got to see what they have in that room because guess what?
07:17Next year, when you have two first-round picks and maybe you throw in your 2028 first-round
07:21pick as well to make a deal to move up the draft board so you can draft somebody who might
07:26be your long-lost franchise quarterback that you think – you think is going to be your
07:33franchise quarterback, right?
07:34You're positioned to be able to go attack that spot next year.
07:38So, let's spend this year.
07:39We've got good pieces on the defensive side of the ball, okay?
07:43Same system, pretty much the same guys, been a top-10 defense each of the last three
07:48years.
07:48We're going to expect we'll be top-10 this year.
07:50We're going to be in a lot of ballgames because of our defense.
07:53We've got a much – we've got an improved offensive supporting cast.
07:56We know.
07:57And, look, I've talked to people in the organization.
07:59They know it's the elephant in the room.
08:03They know they're spinning their wheels in quicksand until they get that position fixed
08:09and solved, okay?
08:11But we can sit here and cry about it until, you know, we're just completely exhausted.
08:18Or we can just sit back and have a rational discussion about what they're doing this
08:23year, why they're doing it, understanding it.
08:25Doesn't mean we have to like it.
08:27And, yes, will it prevent them maybe from winning some games that they could win?

08:33But we – listen, that's the cost of doing business this year.

08:40I'm watching this video that Dan Lobby put out on Axe, dude, of Deshaun Watson, the
08:45interception that he threw to Jack Stoll.

08:47And I get Coach Riz would be mad that I'm getting ready to do this.
08:50He'll be mad because I don't know the full context.
08:53I don't know the read.
08:54I don't know what they were working on, all that.
08:58It looks like he was attempting a no-look pass.

09:04And the ball had no spin, no zip, none of it.

09:11Stoll had no chance of catching it.
09:13It was really a pass intended for the defensive back.
09:16And it looks like passes that I've seen Deshaun Watson throw on the field for the Browns on
09:22Sundays, and I just don't like that feeling.
09:26I don't like that a guy that could seriously start at quarterback this year, Deshaun Watson,
09:32continues to throw these mind-blowing interceptions.
09:38And they still might just play them because, Daryl, you said it, it's the cost of doing business.

09:44And that's the piece of this that's just a tough pill to swallow because the cost of doing business
09:50has costed you games ever since you made that business transaction in 2022.
09:56Here's the thing.
09:57They look at, this is how the Browns, the Browns and I actually, this will shock you,
10:02we actually see eye-to-eye on this one.

10:06Because I have said this repeatedly, even with that offense last year, which was unwatchable,
10:14it was one of the top five worst that this franchise has put on the field since coming
10:22back.

10:29They, despite that, they won five games.
10:33Despite that, if I don't know, maybe, maybe have Bubba Ventron go out there and try and
10:38tackle someone on special teams against the Jets.

10:44Your top 10 defense that we laud and praise all the time, right?
10:49I don't know if they could stop Carson Wentz on that final drive in London.
10:55That's a win.
10:56They let that game get away.
10:57Now, on the flip side of the coin, you say, well, you should have lost the Green Bay game.
11:00You got, you got a little lucky there, but I'm no, you executed down the stretch.
11:05I'm not going to say that's luck.
11:06They executed down the stretch, which is something like a Miami game.
11:10You know, people say if the weather was different, okay, but the weather was what it was.
11:13You're going to have weather games this year.
11:15Look at, look at, look at last year, the games they lost.
11:18Look at the year before the games they won.
11:19And they, they did get to the playoffs, right?
11:22If the field goal, if the 49ers kicker makes the field goal, they don't make the playoffs.
11:26You know, there's, there was a couple other games in there, right?
11:28If, you know, a couple other things happened in a few other games.
11:33It's such a fine line between winning and losing in the National Football League.
11:36Unfortunately, the Browns are always on the worst end of it because they don't do the little things in games
11:41to win.
11:43This year, you could have won seven games last year with that god-awful, unwatchable offense.

11:49They didn't.
11:50They're, they're a five-win team.
11:51They are what they are.
11:52But they could have.
11:53Right.
11:53So this year, how about you go win the games you should have won last year?
11:58Now that gets you to seven wins.
12:00That gets you a step closer to, to, to respectability and contention.
12:04And I think that that's why Jimmy Haslam said what he said on Friday when he said, hey, in, in
12:1027, our expectation is that we're going to be a playoff contender.
12:14I like that.
12:15Not, not so much this year.
12:16I think that's great with a rookie quarterback.
12:18Like, like, like, again, like, I just, well, because they're looking at it as if the quarterback is the final
12:23piece to the puzzle.
12:24I get that.
12:25And you're making a very, very, very big assumption that the guy you pick is going to be the savior.
12:35It's going to be the guy.
12:36Like, that's a lot of pressure.
12:37To be the missing piece, there's a lot of inherited pressure with that.
12:40And I just don't know that the right way to get back to that point is putting Deshaun Watson on
12:47the field this year.
12:48I know.
12:48I just, I'm having such a difficult time with that, especially because he has not come out this training camp
12:55guns a blazing.
12:56And I'm, I'm, I'm factoring in, I'm digesting all the information that we have, all the context about all of
13:02these interceptions that he's throwing.

13:05I don't have to like it.
13:06I don't have any interest in watching Deshaun Watson this year.
13:11My opinion has not changed.
13:14I would prefer to give Shador Sanders a chance to do this.
13:19It's, and that's so easy.
13:21That's such an easy decision to make.

13:24But is it, is it really that easy?
13:27Shador has to go out and earn it.
13:30That's the thing.
