How the Browns' offensive line struggles have made grading Deshaun Watson's play more difficult

00:00to do. Like everything with Deshaun Watson, breaking down his performance from Sunday is
00:05complicated. There were a lot of people giving him the old Peterlin pass because he had 300 plus
00:10yards. The Peterlin pass. A fair amount of those were because there was garbage time and a fair
00:17amount of that's because you were down multiple touchdowns at the half. As bad as the offensive
00:24line was, I can't really let Deshaun get a passing grade for yesterday because one, when the pocket
00:32broke down, he didn't flip into run gear the way he has previously and bail out the offensive line
00:40with his legs. And two, I saw a lot of five, seven, and nine step drops, which I think exacerbated
00:46the
00:46issues on the offensive line yesterday. Yeah, no question about it. The Steelers defensive line
00:51wrecked house. We have to acknowledge that. Brown's offensive line was miserable. Eight
00:55sacks is miserable, but the fumble by Deshaun was awful. And you mentioned 200 passing yards in the
01:00fourth quarter alone. A lot of the garbage time stats that he's kind of been known for in his
01:05early days in Houston. That's what that was yesterday. It was not a good performance. And
01:08anybody that tells me putting up six points is something you're satisfied with at the end of
01:12the day, and that's a good quarterbacking performance. I just think you have it wrong.
01:16Yeah, we're stuck in this weird spot where I don't think behind this offensive line,
01:22I don't think Shador would do better because Shador holds onto the ball too long. It's one
01:26of his big problems. If Deshaun has this problem, Shador has it and then some. Yeah. And it's
01:31interesting, like when we've talked about this, Real Xavier P has commented back at us and been
01:35like, well, then why were Bill's players calling him a check down player in camp? It's like,
01:41because that's something he was working on. It doesn't mean he's ready to do it, especially
01:44like people that wanted to see Shador in the second half. Guys, if they put this kid in
01:49at any point this year, I want to put him in a position to succeed. Right. That was not a
01:53position to succeed with the defense pinning their ear back. And it was apparent that the
01:59Browns offensive line was not going to at any point get traction. Even when he came in for
02:04the couple plays when Deshaun had to go into the blue tent, I was sitting there being like,
02:09Deshaun, come out quicker than you need to. Okay. Like this, it was four minutes in the blue
02:12tent. And I'm like, I'm like, I don't need to see Shador play any more snaps. Like the game plan
02:17wasn't built for him. The Steelers defense is awesome. Nothing good was going to happen.
02:21But like to come back to Deshaun, we're in this weird spot of until you start to see to me
02:28that
02:28the offensive line, it's not just the blocking issues. It's the ridiculous penalties. It's the
02:33false starts. I do think some of the holding calls are starting to just be, that's your reputation.
02:39So you're going to get pinged on those, but like, okay, let's go to one other thing.
02:44The too many men downfield penalties that we saw yesterday, ineligible man downfield,
02:50those are on the quarterback. So like, I just continue to come back to every time I want to
02:55say, well, that was a bad game to Sean. I have to look at the offensive line. Every time I
02:59want
02:59to say there's a bad game out of the offensive line, I have to go back to Deshaun. Like one
03:04credit
03:05that I will give to Deshaun in other matchups is when it is mattered, he has pulled the rabbit
03:10from the hat and played respectable football when it mattered and overcome the offensive line.
03:17I'm not sure if it was just the offensive line was so overwhelmingly bad yesterday that there
03:21wasn't one thing he could trust and it just, the damn gave way. But we're just stuck in a weird
03:27spot where I'm, I mean, Deshaun definitely doesn't get a passing grade. No, but I still just don't
03:31know because the offensive, that is as bad as the offensive line has played all year.
03:35Yeah. But what's funny to me is we got a lot of people that last year when you and myself
03:40were like, I don't know how we judge Shador, like the worst offensive line in the sport is
03:44what he was dealing with. And then those same people that wouldn't give Shador that pass
03:48last year in any sort of way are the ones that are lining up to give Deshaun the pass after
03:52yesterday's game. And that's the part where I just, it just make it make sense. I go look at
03:56the pressure rates and go look at the pressure numbers. Uh, the Shador had as much more
04:00pressure in those games, those seven games than what Deshaun dealt with yesterday. But
04:04when it was Shador last year, people didn't want to hear it, but now all of a sudden they
04:08want to hear it. Like, again, just be consistent about it. If you feel like the offensive line
04:11made it an unacceptable thing for the quarterback to play in, then you got to call it both ways.
04:16Do you not? Sure. Did I lose you? A little bit. Okay. All right. Well, no, no, no. I don't
04:22mean that. Like, I don't know why we're drawing it back to Shador because I just, I'm just
04:26looking at Deshaun and like, and by the way, you and I agree on last year.
04:29It's how you think about, it's how you think about football is the overarching theme there.
04:33Do you feel like if you have an offensive line that cannot play, it excuses the quarterback
04:37completely? Not completely. No. Well, that's, that's the rub. Like if you, if you feel that
04:41way, and again, I'm bringing Shador into play the same way I could bring in Dylan Gabriel
04:45into play last year. What we saw last season wasn't acceptable enough offensive line play.
04:49And what I find interesting is the people that were saying to themselves, well, it doesn't
04:53matter. The quarterback's got to perform regardless and you got to be able to do it. Those same
04:57people today are coming out and saying, well, geez, Deshaun never had a chance. Deshaun
05:02never had a chance in that game. We got to give him a pass. You can't possibly grade him
05:06off of what you saw. Well, guys, you're not consistent then.
05:092-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-9-2.
05:12Anik Wilson says, at Jay Peterlin, what grade do you give Deshaun for his Steelers performance?
05:18I would say probably closer to a D because he, he at least had a one or two moments,
05:24but he's still failing, right?
05:27Well, no, it's passing.
05:28Okay. Then an F.
05:29An F is actually failing.
05:30I would say F plus then.
05:32An F plus. So a high F?
05:33Yeah. High F.
05:34You're still taking summer school, but it's not, it's not great.
05:37Yeah. Like you just forgot to turn in your homework.
05:39There's no summer school. If you get a D, you're good that way.
05:42Like you just got a little lazy with the homework during the year and the teachers making an
05:48example. I mean, everyone's grading was different, right? Some, for some people it was under a
05:5260. Some people was under a 70. Yeah. And I, by the way, trying to remember that in college
05:56was even tougher because I was drunk half the time. I would say, weren't you really comfortable
06:00with getting F's in college? Wasn't that like part of the reason why you didn't finish
06:03college? Yeah. It's not, it's not because you were passing with flying colors is why you
06:10left, right? The funny thing is, uh, the first year I was on the Dean's list.
06:14Yeah. But while you left, that makes it seem like you had a choice there. It was the second
06:17two years that I, well, no, I didn't get kicked off. So you did, you left on your own. Yeah,
06:20I left. So there could have been some passing grades in there. You know why? Was there passing
06:23grades in there? Yeah, there was. I didn't completely get F's. No, no, no. I was Dean's
06:27list for the first year. Don't look like you're insulted to me. And then I was, well,
06:30yeah, cause I did. I left before they could kick me out. Had I come back the next year and
06:35kept failing, they probably would have asked me to leave, but I didn't get in that chance. I want a
06:38transcript of
06:38your final, your final year GPA. Oh, not, not that final year. No, no. Was it your junior
06:43season? Junior year. Yeah. Junior season. I was, I was playing alcoholic. Now that being
06:52said, uh, what grade do you give Deshaun for a Steelers performance? 216-474-0092. Um, I also
07:00want to play Jaquan Brisker. We played him earlier. His comments about, and by the way, adding insult
07:06to injury is that that guy dressed up like Neo from the matrix while talking bleep about everyone
07:13that I, I didn't like that. I, when, when Cam Hayward did it, I was like, I respect you.
07:18When Mason McCormick did it, I'm like, you're dirty pirate hooker, but I respect you on some
07:22level. Cause you got the last laugh. Jaquan Brisker, this guy, this knob, like isn't he on
07:29like the third team? No, no, no. It's second team in two years. Anyways, he, uh, he called
07:34Deshaun a crybaby for soliciting the, uh, the, the roughing the passer call. Baby in
07:40the quarterback. Um, he laying there, you know, crying or whatever you're doing. It's
07:43what it is, what it is. And I hope I won't, I won't assume I'm gonna get fired. Cause
07:48if you watch it, I mean, I'm hitting with my chest and then I'm always going to the
07:51side, but he had his binky today. So they gave it, they threw it out there. It is what
07:55it is. That's a lot of talk for a guy. That's not one of the four best players on that
07:59defense. It's good use of binky. I mean, it's incredibly highly paid defense too.
08:04Yeah. Yeah. Well, that's fair. I mean, that's like, that's the, I mean, they've, they've
08:07been the number one paid defense for like five years in a row in the NFL. Uh, you
08:11can't, you, your helmet can't make contact with the quarterback's helmet. Yeah. You
08:15just can't do that. I don't know why that's tough for defensive players to
08:19understand why they get upset. Well, I always look at it like, all right, they, they
08:22don't mean to do it sometimes. And it just happens. That's kind of what it looked
08:25like. That was, you don't, but you don't have to try to explain it afterwards and be
08:27like, I clearly hit him helmet to helmet. And this is where he just cried about
08:31it too much. It's it's 2026 NFL. You're just not going to get that call. Also
08:351976. Sure. Not 2026. Every quarterback. Also, he had to leave the game and get, he
08:41was out for four minutes because of a concussion test. So it's not as if he
08:46stayed in the game or it's not as if like there wasn't palpable concern. Um, was
08:51there a little bit of acting on Deshaun's part? No embellishing. Yes. I think he
08:56embellished a little bit. You know how I know because Deshaun looked up at the
09:00ref and was like, what the heck? And then put his head back down. Like I got to sell
09:04this better. What's interesting is Kevin Harlan used that as a talking point for the
09:07rest of the quarter that hit. And then he, and then he stopped bringing it up as
09:10if, as if like he was Roger get to him. I know. I just didn't know if he thought
09:14that was going to be like a storyline for the remainder of the game of like that
09:17big hit that he took in the first quarter and trying to make it seem as if
09:20Deshaun carried some concussion like symptoms the rest of the way. And then at some
09:25point Kevin Harlan was like, no, he just, he's just not having a good day.
09:27Probably the funniest comment I've seen so far in the 92 through the fan YouTube
09:31chat is Dim Brollo said he was asking if there was a party at Forest House this
09:36week. It's too soon, but it was pretty funny considering the last two weeks.
