00:00Deshaun impacting the offensive line's booty cheek performance and the offensive line's booty
00:06cheek performance influencing Deshaun's own substandard performance in spite of a second
00:11straight 300 yard passing performance. We got Nathan Segura coming up in one hour's time
00:17and around the NFL coming up in 20 minutes time in a pretty interesting weekend around the NFL.
00:23But yeah, I mean, I think I think that my my struggle with Deshaun is in those moments where he
00:32understands
00:32all right, the offensive line isn't isn't giving me what I need. The problem is he's still whether
00:40it's play calling and he's not speeding up and getting the ball out quicker or he he has to know
00:46he can't do nine step drops. You just have to know that's the one thing you can't do because I
00:52think
00:53the that I thought the tackles had moments where they actually did okay yesterday.
00:58I think Deshaun was responding a lot to just not being able to step up into the pocket and then
01:03that exacerbate exacerbated the problems as the game went on. I think it's pretty clear if there's
01:07any sort of coverage on any of these wide receivers, he just doesn't throw the pass. Yeah, and so it's
01:11pretty obvious. And so the problem that you're running into is that he is so convinced that he
01:16doesn't want to throw an interception that in the process of it, he now has six fumbles, which I
01:21believe leads the NFL for quarterbacks, and he also leads the league in sacks for quarterbacks as
01:26well. So like, like in the process of trying to not commit costly turnover plays with the
01:32interception, he is then in turn doing two really disastrous things. I under and I listen, this is
01:38where there's not a lot that I put on Todd Munkin. We'll get into that as the show goes on.
01:42There's not
01:42a lot that I put on him, but like, all right, guys aren't getting open deep downfield. Maybe we shorten
01:48stuff up and give Deshaun some easier completions. I mean, effectively, that's what they did
01:53once the game was out of hand with Harold Fannin Jr. And with Dylan Sampson too. Like Sampson started
01:58to make all sorts of great plays. You don't have to make this too complicated for him. So like, I
02:02thought Todd was a bit stubborn yesterday, but I think Deshaun gets stubborn too. And like, the funny
02:07thing is, these are not, I'm not trying to be like hard hitting criticisms because I empathize
02:12with what Deshaun is going through. I don't think you would have had more success yesterday with
02:17Shador. As a matter of fact, I think that game would have been even a bigger disaster.
02:21Dylan Gabriel might've gotten the ball out quicker. He would have thrown to the sticks
02:24because that's all I've seen him do in his career. So I don't think you would have gotten any
02:28better offensive performance than that. So it's not like there's a, oh, Hey, we'll go to this and
02:34it's going to save the season. I still think Deshaun is, is the guy that you're going with. And I
02:42those moments, that's where I need him to be the, the, uh, 10 year vet. Like you're talking
02:47about the fumble in that. I don't know what the, when, when a guy's wrapping you up, I don't, and
02:52you feel a guy on your back. I don't know what the hell you're doing trying to then get the
02:56ball
02:56out. That, that like, just take the sack in that moment. Cause disaster. And he has to know that
03:01like that. I don't think that's something that can be coached. You're 10, you're 10 years into the
03:05NFL. And I don't know what Munkin's supposed to do in that spot either. I really don't. I don't
03:08know how Munkin and this kind of goes back to some of the penalties we've talked
03:12about previously too, where at some point you just got to let the players be able to
03:15play. And like, I don't know what you could tell Watson afterwards. Cause we're, we're
03:19consistently seeing this with him with the fumbles. This is not just a one-off. We've
03:22watched that same play happen multiple times this season where we end up, he's getting
03:28wrapped up and he tries to throw the ball to get away. And it just ends up in a fumble
03:31in the worst way. How many times do you think? Now I, I, I listened a little bit to the
03:35NFL
03:35daily podcast, but I didn't get to the Browns. Greg Rosenthal for your, your cup of Joe
03:39this morning. Our guy, Nick shook a lot and Jordan Rodrigue. I knew from Charlotte
03:43too. So I try and support, sort of support my people. Sure. Um, and a little bit of
03:46Ross Tucker today. I didn't actually ever get to the Browns game on either one of
03:51them, uh, because I, I ADHD and also there's only so many ways you can hear this
03:57talk about. I am very curious though, how many people are going to completely
04:00excuse to Sean's performance and, and just look at the box score. I think it's
04:05going to be really fascinating to see how many people actually know how to Sean
04:10got the 300 yards versus the eight sacks. Yeah. Because I venture to guess most
04:17people were watching the one o'clock game, uh, between Buffalo in, in Baltimore.
04:22That one went away pretty quickly too. Once Lamar got injured. Well, but I think
04:25once you saw that game was what 20 to six at a half time, cause I listened to
04:28Coward, uh, earlier today and his thing, they, they immediately pivoted to the Steelers
04:33side of that. And then when I listened to Ben Solak, the aura farmer, he instantly
04:38pivoted to the Steelers too. No real actual predominant thoughts while
04:41acknowledging at least what Coward and Middlecoff did is they acknowledge that
04:46Sean threw for a lot of number or threw for a big number, but they did say it
04:49didn't seem like he himself was actually playing good football. I think this will
04:52be about the, this will be a great litmus test on who actually paid attention to
04:56how to Sean played. Now, I do want to get to something that was asked in the
04:59post game yesterday. Todd Munkin was asked about, uh, whether he had any
05:03inclination to, to take Deshaun out in this game?
05:07Did not. I want to see him play. I want to see him continue to play in battle. And
05:11he did. There's some things that we need to clean up in coaching. There's things
05:14that come up in the game and you're like, man, you know, I could have done it
05:18better, right? As a coach. I mean, that's who are you? If you don't say that
05:21who you are as a man, if you just say, no, starts with me, everything starts with
05:26me and we can certainly be better how we do it offensively. And then how we get our
05:30team prepared as a total, total team in terms of our poise, in terms of how we
05:35handle things better. And that's something we can certainly learn from all of us
05:40coaching and playing without a number one pick behind Deshaun Watson. I think we
05:45should be past the benching Deshaun conversation for right now. I'm not saying
05:51it won't pop itself up. If you lose this game to the saints or the Texans game
05:55after that, like, I know that this conversation can, can veer its head, but
06:00considering at 300 yards a week before I was shocked that this question was asked
06:05and maybe, maybe the reporter in question more was thinking because Deshaun was
06:10getting his ass beat. Maybe that's more what they were thinking. I think maybe
06:13it was about self-preservation, right? To make sure that Deshaun doesn't get
06:16injured. But like, I was thinking, I just look at this and go, I, one, I wouldn't want
06:20to put Shador or Dylan Gabriel in that scenario. And two, I do think there's an
06:25element of these guys continue to just need, need to get reps together and time
06:29together. And I'm not anywhere near having that conversation about, is it time to
06:34bench Deshaun? Cause I think so many things are impacting his play. Oh yeah. I just
06:38took it as it was all about the injury side of things and whether or not you
06:41don't want him to get injured. And what is a, at that point, a meaningless game and
06:45something that doesn't matter. Although I agreed with Munkin keeping them out
06:47there, how the NFL works is during the season, this isn't the preseason during
06:51the season, the guys stay out there. If they're losing, if you get, if you're, it
06:54could be 37 to six and you're still out there playing. And it's for reasons.
06:57Like we saw at the very end of the game, not saying it would have changed the
07:00season. If they all of a sudden got in the end zone there, but there's still
07:03something you can learn and take away from that. And there's something they can
07:05learn and take away from the fact that they weren't able to do it. Should we be
07:08past the benching Deshaun convos for the interim? Let's go with Steven and
07:13Lakewood. Welcome to the show. Hey, thanks for taking my
07:17call. Hey, I'd like to quickly say, without getting off topic here, my, is it
07:21nice how coach Wiseland makes it sound so nice when you got your teeth kicked
07:26in? I mean, you may sound like, Oh, we just got handled, but anyway, no, we
07:31should not be talking about Benson Watson. And to my point, I am much happier.
07:37Yes. I would have wanted to win, but I'm not losing my mind over it. And I
07:40would rather them get their teeth kicked in, get a sour taste in their mouth
07:45because clearly they started reading their own press clippings. And that is
07:49a problem. Like we are going to have to go through Pittsburgh again this year, if
07:55we plan on getting to the playoffs. So with that being said, I would rather they
08:00get killed.
08:02All right, Steve, we appreciate you. Turn down that radio in the background. One,
08:06you don't play Pittsburgh again this year. I do, I do subscribe to, you know, the, I, I
08:13tend to flip to the silver lining pretty quickly of, all right, you got your ass
08:17handed to you. Like there's something that I have learned as a human being of
08:20life has handed me my lunch enough times. And I have found solace in reacting the
08:28right way. And that I've taken pride in, I might've got my ass beat, but I learned
08:32my lesson or I owned my mistakes. That is now the opportunity there for the
08:38Browns. If they want to take it.
08:39Well, yeah, but you got to actually learn the lesson though. And I think the hard part
08:41from that game is that there's so many things it's a, what are the Browns going
08:45to take as a serious lesson learning? And what are they going to take as that was
08:48just one week and it was what it was like I do. And you know, this about me, not
08:53all losses are created equal. We've talked before about good losses or beautiful
08:57losses. Like that was about as ugly of a loss as you can possibly have. And so I
09:01never, I never subscribed to the people that are like, we'll sweep it under the rug
09:05and we're onto the saints. No, hell no. How many things that have persisted for weeks
09:08on end that you saw rear its ugly head in this game? Way too many penalties. Once
09:12again, running backs that continue to run all over this Browns defense continues to
09:16happen again. Bad offensive line play. Judkins not being able to run the ball
09:20because of bad offensive line play. Like if it was a bunch of one-offs, then maybe I
09:23could hear some of that conversation. This is the same stuff and it just keeps
09:27happening over and over and over again. So I know I get in there, figure out what the
09:31hell is going on and fix it. Don't just sweep it under the rug.
09:33Look, the main lesson I need them to learn is the penalties. And it is too many. It
09:39is, it is equal parts that offensive line. Munkin already told you weeks ago. What? Oh,
09:44well, I, we have veterans. They're supposed to know how to do this. Okay. It's been weeks
09:48later. Nothing's changed, but it's also, I mean, I think, I think the, uh, taunting
09:53penalties were really stupid and that's, and that's not, it's not on Todd. That is on the
09:58individual players. You have to understand in the moment you handled that like bleep.
10:03Now you have to take that file it away for the next time that you guys are down, that
10:08you're fighting for your life, that you don't do that same thing. When you feel a little
10:11bit hopeless on the field, let's go with Jeff in Lakewood. Welcome to the show. You
10:15have about 35 seconds, buddy. What you got for us?
10:17What's going on? Now, quick point, man. I want us to like pump the break of my first
10:21point, man. Pittsburgh crushed the Browns when they always go to Pittsburgh. And you know
10:27Pittsburgh, they're a good old little story. Pittsburgh going to win nine or ten
10:31days. They're going to go home. And the last playoff win, the Browns won in
10:352020. Pittsburgh's last playoff win was 2017. We acting like, you know what I'm
10:41saying? I respect them. We act like they represent the ALC in the last four or five
10:44Super Bowls. Pittsburgh is not beating Denver. Pittsburgh not beating Jacksonville.
10:49Pittsburgh not beating the Bill. Pittsburgh not beating Kansas City because them
10:53teams got elite quarterback. You know what I'm saying? Pittsburgh's a good old story,
10:56man. Don't people in Pittsburgh, you're listening. You need to pump the break
10:59because you got nothing coming but an extra game.
11:03All right, Jeff. We appreciate you. All right. So I feel like Pittsburgh fans who
11:07responded yesterday by saying the Browns is the Browns, same old Browns. I thought
11:11that was loser mentality from the winning team. I think if our response is Pittsburgh
11:17ain't bleep, I think that's a little bit of loser mentality. I understand it's the
11:22natural response to you just got housed. It's just the wrong time to say it because we
11:26did just get housed. Yeah. Yeah. I feel like the response can't be no, but you
11:31still suck. But what does that make us then? That means we're awful. I mean, by
11:36the way, the Browns did wave Odrick estimate. So he's gone after a short time
11:41here. Now is that over or is that over or under his estimated time in Cleveland?
11:49I don't think I landed that joke. I tried guys that can't all be winners. That one
11:53won't get me the Marconi.
11:54I think the Sun, cause the Яub ce
11:54is fun. And then, let meуетies it.
