00:00He says he's, while encouraged, still doesn't seem to be ready to make his decision on Brown's QB.
00:08I'm not ready to say it yet.
00:09The plan was always to get through the Bills game, switch up who was going to start,
00:13who was going to play in the second half, and then we'll go from there.
00:16Every day is important.
00:17He might not be ready to say it, but I think he's ready to think it,
00:21and I think what he's thinking is Deshaun Watts is going to be his starter.
00:23Now, I think that while, yeah, I want to see Shador Sanders take the job,
00:27I want to see him take the job.
00:28And if he can't take the job, then, well, I guess we're just going to have to go back to
00:32the drawing board now, aren't we?
00:33Because you're going up against a quarterback that's not very popular with the fan base whatsoever.
00:37You're going up against a quarterback that really just means a lot of bad memories for Browns fans,
00:42but he is still a veteran, and when you have a new coach in there,
00:45there's things that maybe a veteran can do that a younger guy really can't still.
00:51And it is, I think it's going to be another year of struggling for this offense.
00:55I think that a lot of it's going to be some bare-bones stuff.
00:58I think that we're going to be frustrated again by this offense.
01:01I'm nervous about the secondary depth.
01:03I've talked to you about that twice now in the first hour in passing.
01:06I'll get deeper into it with Daryl coming up at 820.
01:09But one of the things that I think I want to bring up here,
01:12and I want you to explain it to me if you can over there.
01:15You said you picked up a lot of Shador fans who were saying that he's not a backup quarterback.
01:21Yeah, the guys.
01:22And these are fans of Shador Sanders?
01:24Yeah, the guys that make the most noise, and some of them have been a part of his team,
01:30you know, in the past, have been on his travels, doing all the video stuff that they do.
01:36Uh-huh.
01:36Um, they have not been happy with Todd over the last week when they thought things were tilted.
01:43And, you know, we had brought up, you know, clearly things did get tilted a little bit.
01:48There was always that one day when all of a sudden we noticed the patterns were disrupted a little bit.
01:54We wondered whether to make a big deal of it.
01:56And Mary Kay, you know, had reported that it looked like Deshaun had maybe an edge based on the reps.
02:03Then all of a sudden Dylan Gabriel was getting some of the two reps on the days that, you know,
02:10Watson was the starter.
02:11So it was very interesting how things had maybe changed a little bit.
02:15But those individuals were, you know, commenting that, yeah, you know, when you throw Shador in off the bench like
02:22that,
02:22like that's not really a strength of his.
02:24That's not really where he's at ease and most comfortable.
02:29He's not comfortable going, he's not comfortable as a backup?
02:34Yeah.
02:35Yeah, maybe he's not built that way.
02:37Not built to be a backup?
02:40Mm, yeah.
02:44Okay.
02:45So he can't, I'm not, I'm not following here.
02:50So explain, because you said this to me and I went, what the hell are you talking about?
02:54And I'm still not abundantly clear on this.
02:58So he can't, so it's, there's no point of starting him week three when they come back home if he
03:02doesn't get the starting job week one?
03:04Well, no.
03:04Is that what you're trying to tell me or what is this?
03:06Well, I think this is, this is a lot of the same mindset of if he is not going to
03:12be able to win this job,
03:14that they'd rather the Browns just move on from him and get him somewhere else where he can.
03:19Where?
03:20That, I don't know.
03:21I don't know how many teams, like I don't know how many teams he'd really legitimately have a chance to
03:25win a starting job.
03:26In the NFL?
03:27Right.
03:29When is he going to win that job?
03:30So if he, well, if he got cut right now, say they did something right now, what job is he
03:36going to go into and take right now?
03:39Nobody's hurt.
03:40Who's hurt?
03:41Like there's a couple back, like guys who are not going to start this year.
03:44Like, like Carson Beck wasn't going to start the season.
03:47Is Carson, like Carson Beck got banged up because Carson Beck gets banged up.
03:52That's kind of, sadly, that's kind of how it goes with him.
03:54Is he just going to step in there and take that job from the veteran?
03:58No.
03:59Like, that's the same thing.
04:01So what, what, what I don't understand is, is what, so he's, he's in case, if he's incapable of being
04:06a backup, then you're going to make me say a bunch of things.
04:10I got to get the, I got to get the clear context because if what they're pointing out is one,
04:15like there's two things about being a backup.
04:17One is that you get thrust into game situations.
04:20If they think he's not good at being thrust into game situations, like in the middle of the game, I
04:26can meet you halfway on that because you get thrust.
04:29Okay.
04:29You're the Owens.
04:30Give me a point there.
04:31I think that's what it is.
04:32All right.
04:32I think they'd rather him not, if he's not going to start the game, don't even suit him up.
04:38Well, maybe week three, he starts the game and he knows it going in.
04:41And then, okay, I don't think that very many, if anybody likes just to be thrown into a football game.
04:47If a guy is hurt, there's a lot that goes on to it.
04:49It can be tough.
04:50And I do think there's such a thing as rhythm and working yourself into a rhythm.
04:54I think that you can be better in the second half than you were in the first half.
04:58Certainly, if you're learning about the defense that you're playing against and you can go back to the sidelines, you
05:02know, that's what we talk about when it comes to unlocking a defense.
05:05Where, like, yeah, everybody wants to score on every single drive, but when it comes to, like, an actual game,
05:10the first drive, that's why they script the first 15.
05:12I want to see what you saw of us on tape.
05:15I want to see what you've really been keying on with us on tape.
05:18Like, that's part of, like, the look at it sort of thing.
05:21That I can understand.
05:23So, if that's their point, Anthony, then I guess I've been led down a bit of a primrose path there
05:27to go shooting my mouth off.
05:28I want to make damn sure about that because I can sympathize with that point of not being wanted to
05:34be thrust into a football game and having to warm yourself up very quickly.
05:38But if we're talking, like, oh, he can't be a backup and he has to start and he has to
05:42be the guy, well, no, you're entitled to nothing.
05:46Absolutely nothing.
05:47If he were a first-round pick or something like that, I guess he could be entitled to something.
05:50But some of this stuff, we've got to face facts and we've got to face reality here.
05:55It's the worst quarterback room in the NFL.
05:56It's an opportunity.
05:57That's why Dylan Gabriel got some sort of conversation and consideration.
06:01And, boy, you saw how that started to work out there on Saturday there.
06:04Like, that's where the quarterback room is.
06:07So, I just, I'm not going to sit there and say things that I don't believe and I don't believe
06:12to even be true just because I like his dad and I like him and I want him to play.
06:15If he can't do it, he can't do it.
06:17Well, don't we have to once and for all, as much as we were excited about, hey, Shor's going to
06:23have a chance.
06:24He's going to have a legitimate chance to win the starting job.
06:26And I do think he had a chance.
06:29Now, I don't know how fair the quarterback competition is.
06:32Remember, we had the Lewis Rinnick comments from last week that there really is no such thing as a fair
06:37quarterback competition.
06:38There's not enough time.
06:39There really isn't.
06:40The schedule that you're on, how many moving parts, and then, you know, you face the reality of trying to
06:47build chemistry with wide receivers.
06:49And that's more paramount than giving a fair shot to a quarterback in a situation.
06:54At some point, a coach just has to kind of pick the guy and go with them.
06:59There really is no fair and balanced quarterback competition.
07:03No.
07:04There just really isn't.
07:05This is where I thought that this might have the best chance to be fair because your fan base doesn't
07:10really like the other guy.
07:12And I think that they're cognizant of that.
07:14And I think even to a degree that Todd Munkin's been made cognizant of that.
07:18But he's got to do what's best for winning.
07:19And if he feels that the veteran is best for winning, and there's a million reasons why you would naturally
07:25feel that way, even beforehand.
07:27Like, there's no such thing as no preconceived notions.
07:29I'm sorry.
07:30It's impossible.
07:31He's been around the league for so long.
07:32He's been around the game for so long.
07:34It is impossible for him to go in without any preconceived notions.
07:37So the whole thing of fairness and, well, we're all – no, that's out the window.
07:42That's crazy.
07:43But this is about as fair as he was going to find in the NFL to be the starting quarterback.
07:48The only other place I could think of might be the Jets, but is – are the Jets going to
07:53take him, like, this week?
07:54Say they were going to go, you know what?
07:56He's not going to start here.
07:58A change of scenery.
07:59He'd rather have a change of scenery.
08:01We're going to go ahead and we're going to move on.
08:02Okay, fine.
08:03If you want to do that, that's okay.
08:04But I don't think he's just going to MetLife and he's going to start ahead of even Geno Smith, who's
08:09at the end of his line.
08:11Like, you're still going to have to get acclimated and play, and three weeks from the start of the season
08:16is a lot closer than a lot of us think.
08:18Is there at least a little bit, a part of you, even if you were dead set against even giving
08:24Deshaun Watson an opportunity,
08:27certainly dead set if it looks similar, then the tie should 100% not go to Deshaun Watson.
08:34And I think most of our fans have been in that camp.
08:37Is there part of you that likes the fact, never mind who the player is, likes the fact that Todd
08:44Munkin is someone who comes in and doesn't pay attention to anything that's happened before?
08:53Of course. Why wouldn't I?
08:53Well, because it's Deshaun Watson.
08:55Because in this case, it's playing the guy that nobody wants.
08:58Yeah, again, I cannot want him to play all I want, but I'm willing to accept the reality of the
09:03situation over and over and over again.
09:05And while I might not like it, I'd be happy because I do think it would be the head coach's
09:10decision.
09:11Now, Sam Monson disagrees with that, and he has a couple of reasons why, but I don't certainly, I'm a
09:16lot closer to the situation than I believe Sam Monson.
09:19There's no offense to him, but it's like, no, I don't think that they really want to go out there
09:22and play Deshaun Watson.
09:23I don't care how much money they still owed him. The money's out after this year, so it doesn't even
09:27matter now.
09:28It's already basically spent, so that doesn't matter to me.
09:31As far as any of the other stuff, I would say that it would be, if you were looking at
09:35anything but on the field, I would say Shador has the upper hand.
09:38But if what we're getting and what we're seeing is all real, and it's real here, then yeah, I believe,
09:44and that's fine, and I support Todd Munkin and his decision to make Deshaun Watson the starting quarterback.
09:49Now, if he goes out there and sucks, and Shador eventually takes over the reins, and Shador does that, well,
09:54then yeah, I got to answer for that, supporting him in that decision,
09:57because now I got to feel worse about my head coach not really knowing who to look at when it
10:01comes to the starting quarterback.
10:02That's a lot to say in a short amount of time here.
10:04But as we sit right now, yeah, your head coach should make the decision.
10:07I think the head coach is making the decision.
10:10I can find that. I can agree with that.
10:15You can want everything you want, but if it's not going to happen, if it's not true, then you have
10:20to be able to accept reality here.
10:22That's what I'm trying to do, is accept the reality that Deshaun Watson is the starting quarterback of this football
10:28team.
10:28Because I think by this day next week, I think it will be the fact that, yeah, you got a
10:33game on Thursday, maybe he plays, maybe he doesn't.
10:37And I just find myself very skeptical that this would be an open competition until next Thursday against the New
10:46England Patriots, then you would make your decision.
10:48The only thing I would think of is that, yeah, you kind of tend to go away after that time,
10:52and that there's a little bit of a lull as you make out your roster and everything like that,
10:56so there's not a lot of chances to corner you and ask you why.
11:00But you still have to go out and do it before the first game.
11:02You still have to talk to the assembled media.
11:04So I think there's still going to be plenty of things that they'll have to explain.
11:07And yeah, I'm sure some people are going to be upset.
11:09That's the way it goes.
11:11But damn, like, I do want them to try to win football games as much as I don't think they're
11:16going to win them.
11:17And so yeah, I'm fine with Todd Monk and doing it, Anthony.
11:19So I know I'm answering, you're giving me the deposition again, and I'm answering all your questions.
11:24I hope I'm answering them as truthfully as possible there.
11:27Am I doing it?
11:28I think so.
11:29Yeah.
11:29All right.
