14:08We find here in this reading some general rules
14:11applicable to all the Lord's disciples of whatever status.
14:18First of all, we learn of the potential for conflict.
14:24Disciples must be patient, looking only to Jesus.
14:29He is our example, our master and our Lord.
14:32He is in all things above us,
14:36immeasurably and beyond comparison,
14:38in his divine power and majesty,
14:40in his transcendent holiness,
14:43in his perfect love.
14:47He was despised and rejected of men
14:50and his people must expect the same treatment.
14:54We are his disciples, his servants,
14:57and the great aim of our life should be
15:01to be to like him.
15:04To draw nearer and nearer,
15:06though always at an infinite distance,
15:10to that pattern of exalted goodness.
15:13We should not look for the high places of the world
15:16when the Lord endured the cross.
15:19We must not look for praise
15:22when he was so cruelly insulted.
15:25We must expect our best deeds to be misrepresented.
15:31People ascribed to the Lord's miracles of love,
15:35the agony, the agency of Satan.
15:40It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master.
15:46It is good for Christians to be blamed,
15:49to be despised, to be slandered.
15:53It is a discipline of meekness.
15:57It leads them to look into their hearts,
16:00to see their own sins and their shortcomings.
16:06And above all things,
16:08it makes them increasingly like their master.
16:12It brings them, if they take it patiently,
16:16into closer relations with their suffering Lord.
16:22And we have a duty of holy boldness.
16:26Suffering becomes a blessing
16:28if it makes men like their Lord.
16:30And therefore they must not fear.
16:33Fear not is the Lord's commandment.
16:35His word of gracious encouragement.
16:40Fear not the misrepresentations of men.
16:44In the great day,
16:46the secrets of men's hearts will be revealed.
16:48The falsehoods,
16:50the malice,
16:50the hypocrisy,
16:51the wickedness of the persecutors.
16:53And the faith,
16:55the purity,
16:56gentleness,
16:57charity
16:58of the Christian.
17:00Men will be seen as they truly are.
17:03The mask will be torn from the hypocrites.
17:07Unreality of every kind
17:09will be exposed.
17:11Therefore, the Lord says,
17:13be real
17:13and be true to your God
17:15and to yourselves.
17:16Speak out and fear not.
17:19The Lord prepared them
17:21for their work in private
17:23in a little corner of Palestine.
17:26But they were to make his teaching public.
17:29He was to teach them secretly
17:31in their hearts
17:32by the guidance of his spirit
17:34leading them into all truth.
17:37But they were to proclaim openly
17:39and fearlessly
17:40the gospel message
17:42for the conversion of the world.
17:47Fear not those who kill the body.
17:50An agony of persecution
17:52would be at hand
17:53and the Lord prepares
17:55his servants for it.
17:58Do not fear them,
17:59says the Lord,
18:00for they cannot hurt the soul.
18:02Their power cannot reach
18:03beyond the grave.
18:06But there is a holy fear,
18:08a fear which is the beginning
18:10of wisdom,
18:11a fear which casts out
18:12all other fears,
18:14the fear of God.
18:16The power of the persecutor
18:18is but for a moment.
18:20He is the kingdom
18:21and the power
18:22and the glory
18:23forever and ever.
18:25They can kill the body only.
18:28Do not fear them.
18:31He can destroy both soul
18:33and body in hell.
18:35Fear him.
18:38This is not the fear
18:39which is a torment.
18:41It is not a slavish fear.
18:43It is that deep,
18:44loving reverence
18:45which gives true dignity
18:47to the Christian life,
18:48which leads the believer
18:50to try always to realise
18:52the awful presence of God.
18:55To live in fear
18:56of displeasing him.
18:57to walk before him
18:59in lowly
19:00and reverential obedience.
19:04This fear is not cowardice.
19:06It is the highest courage.
19:09It strengthened the martyrs
19:10of the Lord
19:11in their cruel trials,
19:12in torture and in death.
19:15And today it strengthens
19:17the true Christian.
19:21And we have a duty
19:23of trustfulness.
19:25God's mercy
19:26is over all his works.
19:27He cares for all
19:30his creatures,
19:31even the smallest
19:32and the most insignificant.
19:34Much more,
19:36he cares for those
19:36precious souls
19:37for which he gave himself
19:39to die.
19:41The smallest of circumstances
19:43in our lives
19:44are not beneath his notice.
19:45The very hairs of our head,
19:47we are told,
19:48are all numbered.
19:50Every little trial,
19:52difficulty,
19:53vexation of our daily lives
19:56are known to him.
19:59Therefore,
20:01let us trust him
20:02in all
20:03the almighty protector
20:05who notes the fall
20:07of every little sparrow.
20:11fear not,
20:12says the Lord,
20:13fear not persecution,
20:15fear not sickness,
20:16pain,
20:17death.
20:18Not one of these things
20:19can separate us
20:20from the love of God,
20:21which is in Christ Jesus,
20:23our Lord.
20:26Right, dear,
20:28in the sight of the Lord
20:29is the death
20:30of each and every one
20:32of his saints.
20:37And we learn
20:38of the end
20:38of this conflict
20:39and the recognition
20:41of the conqueror.
20:44It cost much
20:46to confess Christ
20:47before men
20:48in the days
20:49of fiery trial.
20:50Even now
20:51it is not easy.
20:53It is to own him
20:54as our Master
20:55and our Lord,
20:56not as the many
20:58who say to him,
20:59Lord, Lord,
21:00but as the few
21:02who confess them
21:03deeply in their hearts
21:04in their day-to-day lives.
21:06The whole life,
21:08both the outward life
21:09of word and deed
21:10and the inward life
21:10of thought and motive,
21:12has to be ordered
21:14by the obedience
21:15of Christ.
21:17Both are alike
21:18open
21:19to the searching
21:20ever-watchful
21:21eye of God.
21:24Both
21:26must evince
21:27the confession
21:27of the hearts
21:28that Christ alone
21:29is Lord.
21:31The whole life
21:32must be drawn
21:33around him
21:34as its centre.
21:35It must own him
21:37by ready,
21:38cheerful submission
21:39to him
21:39as its only king.
21:42The reward
21:43is not great.
21:44Such men
21:45will confess
21:45before his Father.
21:48In the glory
21:49of the great day
21:50before the assembled
21:51universe,
21:51the Almighty Judge,
21:53the Most Highly Saviour,
21:54will own them
21:56as his own
21:56true sheep,
21:58his redeemed.
22:00It is a lofty hope
22:02and may it be
22:03all of ours.
22:07We learn
22:08of the rejection
22:09of the disobedient.
22:11Those who deny him,
22:13he will deny.
22:15Not those who,
22:16like Peter,
22:17having once denied
22:18have repented
22:19with a true
22:20and contrite heart.
22:22But those who
22:24deny them
22:24in their lives,
22:25deny him
22:26in their lives,
22:27though they may
22:28profess that
22:29they know him.
22:30But those who
22:31do not show
22:32a willingness
22:33to obey,
22:34have no love,
22:35no self-denial,
22:36those he will deny.
22:39Their profession
22:40may be loud,
22:41he tells us,
22:42their display
22:43of religion
22:43may indeed
22:44be great,
22:45but he will deny
22:46them before his
22:47Father,
22:48for he knows
22:49their hearts
22:50and they are
22:51not his.
22:55The conflict
22:56will be bitter.
22:59The Lord

23:01the Angel,
23:03the Anthem
23:03that celebrates
23:04his Incarnation
23:05dwelt on the
23:06gift of peace.
23:08But glory
23:09to God
23:10came first,
23:11glory to God
23:12in the highest,
23:15necessarily
23:16precedes
23:17peace upon
23:18earth.
23:19The second
23:20cannot be
23:21attained but
23:21through the
23:22first,
23:22and the conflict
23:23which secures
23:24it.
23:25Peace on earth
23:26was the object
23:27of the Lord's
23:28coming,
23:28but the sword
23:29must come first.
23:31The wisdom
23:32that is from
23:33above is first
23:34pure,
23:35then peaceful.
23:37The purity
23:38of Christ's
23:39holy teaching,
23:41its absolute
23:42originality,
23:43its utter
23:43difference
23:44from the
23:45established
23:45modes of
23:46faith and
23:47worship,
23:48would excite
23:49a most
23:50violent
23:50of opposition.
23:52The zeal
23:53of the
23:53Christian
23:53would arouse
23:54the zeal
23:55of the
23:55persecutor,
23:56and there
23:57would be
23:58sharp divisions
23:58even within
23:59the family
23:59circle,
24:01and sometimes
24:02it is even
24:02so today,
24:04and it is
24:05truly a bitter
24:06trial.
24:08But Christ
24:09must come
24:10first in our
24:11hearts,
24:11in our love,
24:13whatever the
24:14cost.
24:15He set
24:16nothing above
24:17our salvation,
24:18and in the
24:18same way we
24:19must set
24:20nothing above
24:21his love.
24:22Human love
24:23is very
24:24precious,
24:24but not so
24:25precious as
24:27the love of
24:28Christ.
24:29All other
24:30love must be
24:31subordinated to
24:32that one
24:33highest love.
24:36In truth,
24:37they love
24:38their earthly
24:38friends the
24:39best,
24:39who,
24:40loving Christ

25:39The cross,
25:40the burden,
25:41his toil of
25:43life.
25:44His words
25:45must have
25:45seemed very
25:46dark and
25:47strange.
25:48The
25:49apostles
25:49looked to
25:50him with
25:51the utmost
25:52of reverence
25:53and now
25:53he,
25:53their king,
25:54spoke of
25:55the cross,
25:55that thing
25:56so totally
25:57loathsome.
25:59He said
26:00that they
26:00must take
26:01it up.
26:02He called
26:03it their
26:04cross.
26:05He implied
26:06that he
26:06himself would
26:07bear it,
26:08but they
26:09could not
26:10have understood
26:10him then,
26:11but they
26:12knew afterwards.

26:15his meaning.
26:16There is
26:17no crown
26:18without the
26:18cross,
26:19no heaven
26:20without the
26:21self-denial
26:22for Christ's
26:22sake,
26:23no salvation
26:24without the
26:26burden carried,
26:28the burden
26:29of faith.
26:34And in
26:35this we
26:35inherit the
26:36true life.
26:39If this
26:39life is
26:40dear to
26:40us,
26:41the life
26:41to come
26:42should be
26:42yet dearer
26:43by far.
26:46our
26:46present
26:47life will
26:47be
26:47continued
26:48in the
26:48life
26:48beyond
26:49the
26:49grave.
26:50Our
26:50personality
26:51is one.
26:52Our
26:53life here
26:53and hereafter
26:54is one
26:55life under
26:55two different
26:56forms.

26:59paradox.
27:00He who
27:00finds
27:01loses,

27:02who loses

27:05love upon
27:06this earthly

27:19life worth

27:22finds,

27:23counts all
27:24things as

27:28finds Christ
27:29and in
27:30him finds
27:31the true
27:31life,
27:32the life
27:33that can
27:34never die.

27:39us conclude
27:40by reflecting
27:41on the
27:41dignity
27:42of the
27:42apostolic
27:43office.

27:45apostles
27:46were the
27:47ambassadors
27:47of Christ.
27:48They
27:49represented
27:49him,
27:50they
27:50carried
27:51his
27:51message,
27:52but more
27:53than that
27:53the Lord
27:54was forever
27:54with them.

27:58them in
27:58Christian love
27:59and hospitality

28:43by their
28:43words,

28:45silent
28:45eloquence
28:46of a
28:46holy
28:47life,

28:48bring a
28:49blessing

28:53who receive
28:54a prophet

29:29people,
29:30when we
29:30help those
29:31with our
29:31arms and
29:32our prayers,
29:33we are
29:33sharing their
29:34work,
29:35making it
29:35in a
29:35measure our
29:36own work.
29:37And the
29:38Lord himself
29:39tells us,
29:40we all
29:41share their
29:42reward.
29:46for think
29:47of the
29:47dignity of
29:48all the
29:49Christians.
29:50All belong
29:51to Christ,
29:52not only
29:53apostles and
29:53prophets and
29:54righteous men,
29:55but also the
29:56little children,
29:57the smallest,
29:59of whom Jesus

30:01whom he took
30:02up in his arms

30:04who he bade
30:05us to bring
