00:00Baker Mayfield today uh it was announced through multiple Bucks reporters he will play on his
00:062026 contract with the intention of becoming a free agent in 2027 and I think I'll say I'll do
00:15the the future prediction first yeah I think that what this means is I'd be surprised if they they
00:21got through a contract at this point an 11th hour contract because once Baker says something like
00:26this I think he does mean it so I think what's going to happen is he'll follow the Daniel Jones
00:31route which he'll go through this season play play well enough and then he'll probably get
00:36tagged because the tag's only 44 million dollars for next year and that's going to allow them to
00:42work in a long term I there's no way in which I actually see Baker Mayfield not being the starting
00:49quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2027 I agree with that I I agree with that I just
00:55the only hang-up I'd have is that it got real contentious with the Browns and Baker when Baker
01:00was trying to go for the time which is 40 million dollars right he now has more evidence than what
01:04he had when he was going for the 40 million that he deserves to be paid in the 50s the
01:08problem with
01:08that is that the NFL has responded and saying oh no we gave out too many 50 million dollar contracts
01:13with that we didn't want to set that precedent you know the the Brock Purdy's of the world that got
01:1850
01:18million Trevor Lawrence that got 50 million those guys they set the bar in a spot where Baker Mayfield
01:24should be living but the NFL has tried to pull back from that now so you're right and what kills
01:28me about it is Baker is more proven than those other two guys all right so actually that's not
01:34fair because Brock Purdy has been to a Super Bowl let me go this way he's far more proven than
01:39Trevor
01:39Lawrence has ever been in his career and I think he's a better quarterback physically than Brock Purdy
01:45yeah so in one way or another I'm looking at both those quarterbacks saying Baker should be a 50
01:50million dollar quarterback I mean there's 12 quarterbacks in the NFL that are averaging 50
01:54plus million dollars a year in their current deal like you're getting paid uh to be and not
01:59necessarily top five and you're getting a lot of money to do so and so if I was Baker I'd
02:03probably
02:03want that but the Bucks they don't want to be stupid about this either I understand that teams feel
02:09like the league feels like hey it's no longer boom or bust you're no longer a 60 million dollar
02:14quarterback or an 8 million dollar quarterback and I understand that there's some wiggle room here and I think
02:20the NFL is doing its damnedest in a way that feels very manufactured it feels like there's been a lot
02:28of conversation around the league it feels like the NFL is very intent on creating a middle class for
02:34quarterbacks that's why I think Daniel Jones got what he got it's why I don't think Sam Darnold got
02:39a contract adjustment after winning the Super Bowl I think teams are bound and determined to be like this
02:43is a 60 million dollar quarterback this is a 50 million dollar quarterback and then this is a 45 million
02:49dollar quarterback but for the life of me I just it's it's kind of that thing that I think happened
02:54here where just a little different but basically you have enough success and then you you attain this
03:02level of success and go well that success is no longer the the level yeah so we need to do
03:08better
03:08than that and I just think the Bucks should look no farther than the Browns and see what's happened to
03:13the Browns since we tried to do better than Baker Mayfield for me it's pretty simple though I look at
03:17Jordan Love basically essentially played eight good games because it was year two and he played
03:22eight bad games to start and then eight good games in back of it and they gave him 55 million
03:26dollars
03:26a year off of that so if I'm Baker Mayfield and by the way there was a a postseason appearance
03:31that
03:31he then uh uh he looked good in the one game and then the second game wasn't good right there's
03:37nothing spectacular going on there if I'm Baker Mayfield I'm pointing to some of these guys and
03:41saying wait why are they getting all this money but I'm once again shorted I'm once again I'm not
03:45given the respect he wasn't given the respect in Cleveland and now he's not given the respect here
03:49like if I'm Baker I do have to ask people what am I what am I missing what what's going
03:54on here well
03:54and what's curious about it is I think Baker fit the John Dorsey motif to a T like that like
04:02he was
04:02an extension Baker and Dorsey were extensions of each other because they're both ultimate football guys
04:08when Kevin and Andrew took over the the attitudes in Bria changed and what was acceptable changed and
04:16what people gravitated towards personally changed they no longer wanted the personality they no
04:21want to they no longer wanted the swagger what which is by the way which is why a part of
04:25why I
04:25think he works very well in Tampa Bay that's what I was going to say is Jason liked if you've
04:29ever
04:29heard their GM that is the Dorsey light and I say that as a compliment that is a pure football
04:35guy and
04:35the city works that way too you know like you can in the media Tampa you can hide you can
04:40you can say
04:40a lot of things that just never get discovered because it happens in Tampa and so I don't I just
04:45think if you're Tampa Bay you've got to be very cautious of this and again I I I don't see
04:49him
04:49playing anywhere other than Tampa next year but if I'm right about the Browns and I think the Browns
04:56probably sweet spot is in that seven range I said it yesterday I'm gonna try and stick to this because
05:00I
05:00know I know sometimes the closer we get to the regular season where we can all change our opinions
05:05we get super excited I think they're I think put me on seven right now I think they can go
05:11as far
05:12as nine wins and as low as five but if they hit that sweet spot of seven you're not getting
05:17one of
05:17the five best quarterbacks in next year's draft and so if you end up being a seven win team and
05:23the
05:23only thing holding you back is a quarterback position and a year from now Baker Mayfield is a free agent
05:30all I've heard is Browns fans were sick of Baker five years ago say the Browns will never do it
05:35it
05:35was a bad relationship guys 60 million dollars or 55 million dollars settles a lot of previous
05:42grievances I'm just saying if he's out there and the Browns again they can't do it with Andrew
05:49Barry in charge I don't feel that can happen I can we can make that happen I'll allow that I
05:53mean
05:53you're gonna fire Andrew Barry or what are you telling me uh sure I mean I would have fired Andrew
05:57Barry a while ago but like as long as we're if the idea is you have to get over a
06:01Haslam and
06:02Haslam's commitment to this I think you're right uh but I I don't think Andrew Barry would ever go
06:06down that road I I just don't think he would I think I actually think the bigger I I think
06:12Todd
06:12Munkin's a real key difference this time because I think Todd Munkin and Baker Mayfield would be
06:18best buddies I think again Todd is a football guy if you play your ass off if you have that
06:24swagger I
06:24think that's the kind of thing he wants out of his quarterback I think I think Todd might be able
06:30to be the guy to convince Andrew hey I know what you thought we need to stabilize this quarterback
06:34position let's get Baker have him here for the next five years and along our way we'll take that
06:40stab at that future if it happened I would no longer believe Andrew Barry's got uh control over
06:45this roster that's fine like if it does go down that way uh because that and that way that would
06:49take a lot on the Haslam side of things and that would take a lot of convincing in other spots
06:53but
06:53that would tell me that he is doing a lot of stuff in this building that is not deciding who
06:57the quarterback of the Browns is and in fairness a lot of things have to happen and maybe Andrew
07:01Barry being removed from his position is one of those I would be a little shocked if that happens
07:06given the image rehab that's happened despite eight wins in two seasons I mean what other GM has
07:12done eight wins in two seasons and because of injustifiably good drafts have seen their the
07:19thoughts on them completely erase the worst trait in NFL history I've never seen anything like this
07:23it's remarkable what he's been able to pull off but we've we've kind of marveled at it for a while
07:28now and give credit to like the Browns organization I think their PR staff has done a great job of
07:35of
07:35framing things of utilizing their media contacts I'm not saying any of this in like a cynical tone I
07:42would know because I would say hey this is my cynical tone but I do think like I think they've
07:47done
07:47a great job at helping Andrew refresh his image around the NFL and I think they also did a great
07:52job by the way of of kind of helping Kevin Stefanski maintain his image despite a lot of disappointment
07:58and no question about it no question about it now would Baker be interested in coming back and doing
08:03this all over again I guarantee if they said 55 60 million or so I think for top dollar I
08:09would be
08:10shocked at this point you could present it as like this is us making up for what we did to
08:14you
08:14previously he's always he always loved Cleveland he loved everything about Cleveland all things
08:17considered he just didn't love how it ended and there was the idea that he didn't love he didn't
08:22love the him and Haslam did not get along at the very end there to the point where uh he
08:26stopped
08:27taking Haslam's phone calls and so like there was a there was a disgruntled employee part of this that I
08:32I don't know I don't know that it's as much of a slam dunk I know money cures all things
08:35I don't know
08:36that it's as much of a slam dunk that Baker would be excited to come back here and be willing
08:39to do it
08:39if LeBron and uh Dan Gilbert can get over each other I think Baker and in uh Jimmy Haslam can
08:45yeah
08:45but think about it like they the Browns sent him to the football wolves they were comfortable with
08:49letting his football career die and they made him almost like he's like a phoenix rising from the
08:53ashes they made him resurrect his own career and I mean he got to a spot where he was he
08:58was battling
08:58with backups to be the starter in Tampa and five million dollar deals to take on Kyle Trask like
09:03like the the idea that the organization gave up on him will always be in his brain I I don't
09:10the
09:10way he is because he's vindictive like Baker's vindictive Baker in in college kept all sorts of
09:15things in his locker room of all the people that had wronged him like this is he's not your normal
09:20guy when it comes to feel people that he feel like has wronged and I imagine he wakes up still
09:25to this day thinking the Browns did him wrong I just think if LeBron and Dan can get over it
09:29I think I think that where there's a will there's a way now we don't know if there's a
09:33a will there and we'll find that out LeBron wanted to get over it to finish the story and to
09:37make sure
09:38that he he did something for the the place he grew up in like Baker doesn't have that Baker
09:41doesn't have that connection that LeBron has he sees a 60 million dollar a year contract in his lap
