00:00If he's cleared, I'm starting him.
00:01Even if he knows next to nothing about the game plan.
00:04He's the starting quarterback.
00:06That might sound silly.
00:08Next to nothing about the game plan, I would assume he picks something up.
00:11He knows what they're doing, and they're going to – he'd be the guy.
00:13I mean, he's played the game.
00:14There should be enough muscle memory there that if he comes back.
00:16There is a five-step return to participation when it comes to the NFL.
00:20I don't know if I want to bore you with that, but it's just pretty simple.
00:23You can do limited activity, then you do aerobic activity,
00:27then you can do football-specific exercise training for, like, up to 30 minutes,
00:33and then club-based non-contact training drills,
00:36and then you're allowed for full football activity and clearance
00:40under an independent neurological consultant.
00:43I know it's all kind of nerdy and wordy, but that's the way it is.
00:47Kind of rhymed, nerdy and wordy.
00:49I know.
00:49I think Jeff Thomas would like that.
00:51That was good by you.
00:52Yeah, it's very weird, Al.
00:54Okay.
00:56Step two here.
00:58Shadour starts.
00:59Okay.
01:00You okay with that?
01:01Yeah.
01:01I mean, we don't have a choice.
01:02If he's the backup quarterback and DeSean can't go, he would be the guy.
01:08I'll readily admit, curious to see what he could do.
01:11Absolutely.
01:12I am, too.
01:13I am, too.
01:14I want to see, like, what happens this week.
01:17I know there are a lot of fans that want to see him play.
01:21I'm totally intrigued.
01:22I want to see what he looks like when he starts the game,
01:24not when you hand him the ball on the second series.
01:26And I just, I don't think he was ready.
01:28But, I mean, I can understand why you wouldn't be ready.
01:31He'll be getting all the reps.
01:32Yeah.
01:33I mean, we sit here and we say, you're one step away.
01:35You're one step away.
01:36You're one step away.
01:36You can tell it to everybody.
01:39Oh, he really is.
01:51Yeah.
01:52Okay.
01:52I hope I'm ready.
01:54I mean, what else?
01:56You were in the competition to be the starting quarterback.
02:00If that didn't get you ready, getting all of the activity this week
02:04should get you ready.
02:07Going to New Orleans to play a Saints team that, in theory, you should beat.
02:11But, if you're a legit playoff contender, you go and you take care of the New Orleans
02:17Saints.
02:17Yeah.
02:18Even though they have some good young talent.
02:20If you're Shador, this is, I mean, like.
02:21Here it is.
02:22If I was Shador.
02:23Opportunity's knocking, right?
02:23Yeah.
02:24I would have been angry that I didn't get the starting job.
02:26Because that means that something didn't go right for me to do that.
02:29And I would be motivated to be like, okay, I'm going to be ready.
02:32Why would you be angry if you just got beat out?
02:36Because I'm a professional quarterback in the NFL, and I want to be a starting quarterback.
02:40It's nothing personal.
02:42It's not even, it's more business than anything.
02:45Like, you don't want to lose a customer, do you?
02:49And then all of a sudden you have a chance to get that customer back?
02:51Yes.
02:52So now he's in that same spot.
02:53He's got a chance to go out there and prove that the Browns made a mistake by making
02:58Deshaun Watson the starting quarterback in the beginning of the year.
03:01I'm not saying that that's his, if I was in his shoes, that would be my motivation.
03:07All right, I got a chance.
03:08I'm going to make this work.
03:10I'm going to make this happen.
03:11Without trying to put too much pressure, I want to show them that I should have been
03:15starting from day one.
03:16And if I'm the head coach, that's how I want the quarterback to be.
03:20You know what?
03:20Prove me wrong, man.
03:22Go out there and kick some you-know-what and let's go win.
03:28Makes sense, doesn't it?
03:28How do you handle adversity?
03:29And so here it is.
03:31It's an opportunity for him.
03:32Deshaun Watson's your starting quarterback.
03:34If he's healthy, he plays.
03:36Yeah, I got to think if you hit Friday, you're in.
03:40Again, I'm not talking.
03:41That's probably likely.
03:43I don't think.
03:44First of all, I actually.
03:46Depends what the coaching staff now thinks of Shador.
03:48Yeah, that's really what it comes down to.
03:50Yeah.
03:50They happy with him?
03:52All right, then he can start.
03:54They're not happy with him?
03:55Well, then they'll throw Deshaun out there even if he didn't practice.
03:57Or maybe make another move.
04:00Oh, I.
04:03Honestly, if Shador gets cleared on Saturday, or excuse me, if Dylan, if Deshaun gets cleared
04:10on Saturday, I'd play him.
04:11If he's cleared, you've made the determination at the beginning of the year that Deshaun gives
04:18you the best chance to move the football and score points.
04:21So, if he gets cleared, I would start him.
04:24That's not my call.
04:25Odds are that that's not going to happen, though.
04:28If I'm sitting here right now.
04:30If he doesn't get cleared through Friday, he's probably not going to get cleared.
04:34I don't think he's going to get cleared.
04:35Again, I told you the five-step process.
04:37Yeah.
04:38You got to go through to get back out on the field.
04:40Does that all happen?
04:41And, you know, by Friday, I doubt it.
04:44I highly doubt it.
04:47So, and it's in Deshaun's best interest to let him rest, too, this weekend.
04:53Even if it's, if he's got a concussion.
04:56Well, yeah.
04:56It's in his best interest to let him rest.
04:59I'll be honest.
05:00It's one game we're talking about, you know.
05:02I'd be really intrigued to see what Shador can do.
05:06Because I've used the word competent for Deshaun Watson.
05:10Competent quarterback play is okay.
05:13Okay.
05:16What good quarterback play is what you're really looking for.
05:19If Shador can give you better quarterback play, that's one thing.
05:23If Deshaun can get better, that's one thing.
05:27Deshaun's been terrific in the fourth quarter in five games.
05:31Other than that, he's been okay at best, I think.
05:36So, I don't think, I don't think the question has been answered.
05:40Do you have a quarterback here long-term?
05:42In fact, I would say the answer is no right now.
05:45But, we'll see.
05:47And if Shador goes out and plays really well, if he actually plays on Sunday, okay.
05:52If he doesn't play on Sunday and Dylan Gabriel does, all right, there's a whole other thing.
05:56We'll find out from Todd Munkin when he meets with the media around noon.
06:00Number to join us, 216-474-0092.
06:04Matt Corrali will take your phone calls.
06:05Dan Mennegan standing behind the glass right now.
06:09I would be really surprised if Shador Sanders doesn't start Sunday.
06:13That, to me, is it would be.
06:14Well, but what if Deshaun gets cleared tomorrow or Friday?
06:19If he has a concussion right now, it is in his best interest and the team's best interest to let
06:25him rest for a week.
06:26And I just don't see it.
06:28But what if he gets cleared?
06:28But look at, you know how hard it is to, I still think it's going to be difficult for him
06:32to get cleared.
06:33Guys get cleared all the time.
06:35How many games do they, I mean, how often do, it really doesn't happen often someone gets a concussion on
06:41Sunday and they're back the next Sunday.
06:43I'd be interested to look up the numbers on that.
06:45And if they have, it's just recently that they started doing that.
06:48Because in the beginning, it used to be, if you got a concussion, you were sitting out.
06:53So far this season, every Brown who has left a game with a concussion has been back to play the
06:57next week.
06:58That's according to Daniel Oifusi.
07:01Again, I don't, again, I know what you know, it's every concussion is different.
07:06We don't know any of the levers that are pulled in there.
07:09It's just one of those, here's a factoid.
07:12I don't know what that means in the long haul for this situation.
07:14And see, can I, can I clear this up?
07:18I don't think any of us, and I don't think any Browns fan, should be rooting one way or the
07:24other about anything here.
07:25If Deshaun gets cleared and they start him, that's okay.
07:28He's the starting quarterback.
07:30If he doesn't get cleared, well, he's not going to play.
07:33If they think they're putting him in harm's way, even if he gets cleared by playing him, then they shouldn't
07:38play him.
07:39I mean, I'm just saying, I would assume that if he gets cleared, especially by Friday,
07:45and can actually go through a practice on Friday, that's nothing, that's like, Andy, that could be like,
07:52you have an ankle sprain or your hip is sore and you're cleared Friday and you go through the Friday
07:58practice and you play on Sunday.
08:00That's the way it works in the NFL.
08:02Oftentimes, guys sit the first two practices or they're limited or whatever.
08:06And then you play on Friday.
08:08If he gets cleared, I would assume he plays.
08:12The medical aspect of this, though, Andy, is not anything for me to determine, you to determine.
08:18It's for the medical folks to determine.
08:20And if they clear somebody from concussion protocol, that means he's good to go.
08:24Let me give you some more.
08:25If you combine, you know, if the coaching staff has had thoughts of, boy, we need better quarterback play than
08:31what Deshaun is giving us,
08:33well, that's another story.
08:36According to a study published by PubMed, 38% of NFL players who suffer a concussion return to play the
08:44following Sunday.
08:45Again, the percentage?
08:4638% return from Sunday to Sunday.
08:49And Dan just said the Browns have had an incredible...
08:53Everybody return.
08:54Yeah, according to Daniel Oifusi...
08:56ESPN.
08:57This year.
08:58Correct.
08:59Just this season.
09:00Correct on all of those caveats.
09:02Yeah.
09:02All the Browns who have been in concussion protocol this year have come back the following Sunday.
09:08So, again, according to that study that was published, the overall median time missed for a concussion in the NFL
09:15is nine days with a mean of 15.
09:18About 60% of concussed players miss at least one game.
09:23Again, I don't know what that statement means in the grand scheme of it all, but it seems like it
09:29should be stated.
09:30This is really not a debate.
09:33It's going to be really cut and dry.
09:36The medical folks are going to determine, is he good to go?
09:39Did he pass concussion protocol?
09:41And I would assume if he does, that he plays.
09:44Unless the coaching staff is thinking about making a change of quarterback.
09:49And we'll find that out at noon when Todd Bunkin speaks, you're going to want to hear it right here
09:53on 92.3 The Fan.
09:54Here's the other thing, too, when it comes to concussions and stuff.
09:56The Browns have the best team physician in the NFL.
10:01Dr. Vuce from UH, not only has he been the Browns guy, but he's the NFL's guy, too.
10:07That's a big determination.
10:07I like that.
10:08Well, I mean, he's the president of the NFL Physician Society.
10:12I mean, he is as good as it gets, and he's not going to put in it.
10:18And so, I mean, these guys all hold themselves to a high standard.
10:21I think he holds himself to the highest standard, too, to make sure that he's got players that are healthy
10:25that are back out on the field.
10:26For whatever that's worth, I mean, you want to talk about, we talk about all-star athletes.
10:30I mean, the head team physician for the Browns is an all-star.
10:33There's, like, no doubt about it.
10:34So, like, I don't even, I wouldn't even question.
10:38Have you ever talked to him?
10:39He's brilliant.
10:40Just a great guy, too, on top of everything.
10:41They have a list.
10:43Pro Bowl, Pro Bowl docs.
10:44I like that.
10:46He's a Pro Bowl doc.
10:47He's right there.
10:47He is the...
10:48When the Pro Bowl meant something, he was your guy.
10:50He is the creme de la creme.
10:51It's a beautiful thing, isn't it?
10:53Yes.
