Over the last two decades, exam stress has become a mental health crisis in India with an increasing number of school and college going children reporting intense anxiety, chronic fatigue, mental fog and suicidal ideation. According to Pulkit Sharma, a well-known clinical psychologist, psychoanalytic therapist, spiritual counselor and author, timely emotional support and wisdom from parents goes a long way in helping children deal with exam stress.

This is an excerpt from an interview recorded in 2013 in which Pulkit Sharma spoke to Jagran Media team about the mental health issues confronting the Indian society. Although, it's been more than 13 years since this interview was recorded, the insights given by Pulkit Sharma continue to be very meaningful.

00:01In order to mentally prepare your child for exams, it is very important to tell
00:06them that it's an important self-assessment. They'll get to know what
00:11they have done, how much they have learned, how much they know. But at the
00:15same time, it should be emphasized that it's not a catastrophe, it's not the end
00:20of world. Secondly, children should be told and encouraged to maintain a very
00:25balanced lifestyle where they can balance their studies, friend time, internet time,
00:31movies, everything. That will kind of help them to take exams with ease. Thirdly,
00:39during exams, before exams, children are prone to have acute kind of anxieties.
00:45It is very important for the parents to understand these anxieties and not to
00:50rubbish them. I often see parents telling their children that it's irrational, it's
00:55going to be fine. Don't worry so much. Though these things are very good
00:58intention, they tend to be very unhelpful. You need to hear and understand what the
01:04child is feeling.
