While parental pressure often gets expressed in behavioral, social and academic expectations, there are deep-seated unconscious reasons behind it. Pulkit Sharma, a clinical psychologist, psychoanalytic therapist, spiritual counselor and author summarizes how parents would benefit from understanding their unconscious mind and letting children be.

This is an excerpt from an interview recorded in 2013 in which Pulkit Sharma spoke to Jagran Media team about the mental health issues confronting the Indian society. Although, it's been more than 13 years since this interview was recorded, the insights given by Pulkit Sharma continue to be irrepressible and timeless.

00:01All parents see children as their extension. It is a fact that parents look
00:08up to children in order to get their own unfulfilled needs fulfilled. Parents who
00:16have not been as successful as they wanted to be, who have not been as
00:21studious as they wanted to be, who have not got as much admiration as they wanted
00:26to be, they feel very pressured that their child should do it for them. It is
00:33very crucial to understand this baggage of unfulfilled needs and deal with it in
00:39one's own inner self. Once you deal with it, you'll be very comfortable with the
00:45child doing what they want to in studies. Therefore, it's very important to sort out
00:51your own past and not let it influence the present of your child.
