A sound mind and good mental health rests on four foundational pillars: sense of self, balance, being and belongingness. Pulkit Sharma, a clinical psychologist, psychoanalytic therapist, spiritual counselor and author shares his expert opinion on how to build and safeguard these basic foundational pillars.

He also highlights that if things go wrong, one should overcome the inhibitions around seeking help. This is an excerpt from an interview recorded in 2013 in which Pulkit Sharma spoke to Jagran New Media team.

00:01You can maintain good mental health by doing a few very simple things.
00:07Firstly, develop a strong sense of self.
00:11Because if you have a strong self, then any failure, any stress, any external event, anything going wrong,
00:18loss of job, loss of relationship would not really shake you up that much.
00:23Generally people crumble because they feel unsure of their own self.
00:28So work on your sense of self and stay grounded.
00:33That's very important.
00:35Secondly, have a balanced lifestyle.
00:38Do not overdo anything, whether it's work, whether it's fun, whether it's studies,
00:43but have time for everything.
00:45You should be working, you should be studying, you should be having fun.
00:48You should also get time for relaxation.
00:52The third thing that is very important is a time to be.
00:56By that what I mean is that our present day life is so much focused on targets.
01:02There's a target for gymming, there's a target for studying.
01:05You have to see how much you are doing, how much you are burning kind of thing.
01:09But all this at the end of the day leaves you highly stressed.
01:13So have some time where you are just yourself, where you are simply doing something and enjoying it,
01:20where you are not focused on targets, where you are not seeing how much you are doing.
01:24And lastly, it is important to have good relationships as well.
01:30If you can bond with someone with whom you could express your own self completely,
01:35then that really makes you feel very good about yourself.
01:39And if things are still not working, then do not shy away from consulting a mental health professional.
01:45At times people feel that they are like bad if they cannot handle themselves on their own self and if
01:52they need someone.
01:53But that is not really bad.
01:54If you delay it and if the thing worsens, then you are in a very very difficult state.
02:00Right.
02:00Right.
