00:00Baskin of Phelps, 92.3 The Fan.
00:02All right, let's go to the Wiseheart Wright.
00:03We make it right.
00:04Call Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:05We jump right back into the Miles Garrett story.
00:07And a guy that I think can give us some great perspective is a guy that you listen to every
00:11Sunday
00:13when you are watching or listening to the Browns game.
00:17Sorry, I lost my mouse here.
00:18Somebody hit it behind the other side of the computer.
00:20When you're listening to the games.
00:22No, it wasn't me.
00:22It was not me.
00:23When you're listening to the games right here on the Browns Radio Network,
00:26he's a super friend of the show.
00:27And, again, he's on the Wiseheart Wright.
00:28We make it right.
00:29Call Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:30He is Andrew Siciliano.
00:32Hi, Andrew.
00:32How are you?
00:33Andrew.
00:33Good morning, guys.
00:34And maybe when you watch as well, I mean, growing up as a kid,
00:38we would always turn down the TV and turn out the radio, right?
00:41That is exactly how I see it, my friend.
00:44I love the thought of your perspective on this trade,
00:47knowing your recent history with the Browns
00:50and your past history as the preseason play-by-play guy for the Rams
00:54and living in L.A. sometimes and living in Cleveland sometimes.
00:57So, I just – what did you think when this thing went down yesterday?
01:01Well, I mean, let's unpack the emotional part of it first.
01:03I hate it.
01:04I don't want to see Miles go.
01:06I think we all agree, right?
01:07I mean, we all agree.
01:08Miles is –
01:09It's great to collect Hall of Fame players.
01:11Yeah, and, like, you've wrapped your head around it for the last year,
01:18ever since the Super Bowl in New Orleans, where you said he wanted out
01:21and you had to stare that in the face and think about the idea that it might happen.
01:25Granted, A.B. was adamant just moments ago that they never thought about it last year,
01:29and that's everything I heard last year as well.
01:31It just wasn't going to happen.
01:32But, you know, you started to wrap your head around that possibility a year ago
01:36and watching all the highlights and SportsCenter and GMFB and everything on our phones.
01:42I mean, we all stare at our phones all stinking day anyway.
01:45And seeing all these great moments, like, it stinks.
01:50And you're like, wow.
01:52Like, he was that good.
01:53Well, of course you know that.
01:54You know that in the moment.
01:55But to see all the highlights and all the memories and, you know,
01:57him running off the field, bumping hips with Baker in 2020
02:00on, like, one of the greatest memories of my adult life, like, it hurts.
02:07So I get it.
02:08Like, for every fan who's like, what am I going to do with this jersey?
02:10Well, there are going to be more jerseys, and, like, we still have great players.
02:14And they're a great young Quinchon fan and exciting players.
02:18Carson, Mason, all these guys.
02:21But it's hard to see this one go because he's one of the greatest ever in uniform.
02:26Period.
02:29He's, you could argue he's the best player in the NFL that doesn't throw a football.
02:33So it's hard to see him go.
02:35At the same time, and I'm going to do the both can be true thing here,
02:40they got a good return.
02:43And he is 30, despite how great last season began, or last season was.
02:49Everyone wants to compare this to, like, the Micah trade.
02:51Well, Micah, they got two ones.
02:53Yes, they did.
02:53They got two ones and, like, an aging nose tackle.
02:58Not an edge rusher, a nose tackle.
03:00Kenny Clark's a good player.
03:01He's a nose tackle.
03:04So this is, for a player four years older, a one and a dog in Jared Verse
03:12and a two and a three.
03:14Ron Trent's going to love Jared Verse.
03:16Love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
03:18He's not Myles Garrett, and no one is.
03:20Myles is the best to ever do it.
03:22But you're going to love him.
03:24And I just want, I don't want people to be disappointed that this wasn't enough.
03:28It was a heck of a return.
03:31And I think they'll finally get that when they see Jared Verse week one
03:36on the road in Jacksonville.
03:39The Rams just, the Rams just basically pulled the Matthew Stafford trade, but at defensive
03:45end, right?
03:46They, they prefer players, they prefer players over picks.
03:50But my thought on this one is this, Andrew, and you tell me.
03:56Is, is Myles that much better for the Rams right now and maybe three years down the road
04:05to include verse in this trade along with some pretty good draft capital?
04:08That, that's the thing to me.
04:10If I'm the Browns, I'm thinking I, I, I've got a defensive end and I have some capital
04:14that could lead to some really interesting things down the road.
04:17Yeah, there's a lot there.
04:19Um, so I can tell you from speaking with Rams people, they absolutely did not want to include
04:23Jared verse period.
04:25They wanted this trade to be picks only.
04:27That's what they wanted this trade.
04:29So when AB is telling you that Jared verse was the game changer, it really was because
04:33that Rams people are saying the exact same thing.
04:36They did not want to give up Jared verse at all.
04:38Um, the Jared trade, I think is a little misunderstood.
04:42You know, a lot of people are like, Oh, we had to throw in all these first round picks
04:45because we were dumping his contract.
04:47Yeah.
04:47They wanted out.
04:48They, they had decided Sean McVay had decided that he wanted to move on.
04:51He wanted to, to, to crank it up a notch and he wanted to go get Matthew Stafford.
04:55And in many ways, the, the Matthew Stafford trade led to the Deshaun Watson trade.
04:58I mean, it was kind of a template, right?
05:00Hey, we're going to go all in trade the picks.
05:02We're going to go get the guy because we think we need to take a step up.
05:05We can debate the Deshaun trade all you want.
05:07And we will obviously for many years, but there are very similar trades.
05:11Hey, we don't think we're ready.
05:13We're good enough to take the next step.
05:14Let's go get the guy that we think can take us there.
05:17The difference is, is that the Rams had to throw in those extra first round picks to go
05:22to Detroit because there were other suitors for Matthew Stafford.
05:27Washington wanted them.
05:28Carolina wanted them.
05:29They made very competitive bids.
05:31So it was going to be a one for one.
05:33Golf was always going the other way, but the Rams had to throw in all these other picks
05:36because if they didn't, Matthew Stafford could be a Carolina Panther or he could be,
05:41he could be a commander.
05:42And like the sliding doors in the NFL are very different.
05:45Two firsts and a third in that trade, right?
05:47Two firsts and a third going to the trade.
05:49Whatever it was.
05:50I don't remember, but they threw in the ones.
05:52And that obviously was the one that when he threw in the ones, everyone's like,
05:56oh, you're just, you have to throw in the ones to make Brad Holmes take the contract.
05:59I mean, well, certainly it helped.
06:01And also Brad Holmes had familiarity.
06:03The Lions GM was Les Snead's lieutenant here for a number of years.
06:06So where was I?
06:07Jared Verse.
06:08Jared Verse, when he hits the open market next year, is going to get it.
06:11Well, he's not going to hit the open market, but when he's extension eligible,
06:14is going to get a very good deal.
06:16If he continues to ascend, let's put it this way.
06:18If he continues to ascend, and after next season, after his third year in the NFL,
06:26if the Rams were to say, we don't want to sign him, make us a deal,
06:31he would get at least a one.
06:33I would say a one and a three in return.
06:36That's what the Rams could get.
06:38I think that's a minimum offer to get Jared Verse.
06:42So that's the kind of player they're getting back in return.
06:44He is an alpha leader dog.
06:49He is a guy who will call out Steeler fans and go back it up.
06:55I promise you.
06:56Because he's already done that with Eagle fans and backed it up.
06:59He has no regret.
07:01No regrets whatsoever.
07:02He's funny.
07:03He's smart.
07:05And he's going to play his tail off.
07:07He plays the run as well.
07:10You're going to love him.
07:12I promise you.
07:14I think it's interesting that it just seemed like when they restructured his contract,
07:20they said, we are open for business.
07:22Like, to me, that made more sense than anything that maybe, I understand what Andrew's saying,
07:28and I think he's saying things that are truthful in the moment.
07:31But how is it not we're open for business, especially when that made the Rams want to kick the tires
07:37and start the car and take it for a test drive and buy the car at that point?
07:42So I thought there were two, there's two interesting points to this.
07:46One, were they open for business for the rest of the league?
07:49And two, why do it now?
07:51I thought that was interesting, too.
07:54Yeah, there's, it's a tough one.
07:57Because when news of the restructuring came out, my reaction was, and I asked people around the league,
08:03like, I mean, come on, this has to mean trade.
08:07And I got a lot of people that wrote back and said, I don't, I don't see how it means
08:13anything other than trade.
08:14But many of them also said in the same breath, that trade may not be this year, that trade may
08:19be next year.
08:20So the idea that they were going to absolutely sell him off right now, I don't, I don't think that
08:24was the case.
08:26Because moving that, they didn't just move the trigger this year.
08:29They moved that bonus structure in all subsequent years of his contract.
08:34You know what I'm saying?
08:34Yeah.
08:35Yeah, that makes sense.
08:36I get it.
08:36It gave, it gave next year some flexibility as well.
08:39But generally speaking, if I'm your investment advisor, right?
08:42Yes.
08:43And you come to me and say, hey, my employer has, my employer owes me $6 million.
08:47Oh, yeah.
08:48My employer owes me $6 million, Andrew.
08:50Wait a minute.
08:51What kind of financial investment guy are you that I'm sitting here and they haven't paid me yet?
08:55Hop on that, man.
08:56Okay, my investment advisor owes me $6 million.
08:59He wants to hold my money for six more months.
09:02Should I let him do that?
09:03Your investment advisor would say, no, we want the money now because we'll put it in some vehicle even.
09:09In today's market that we trust more than them holding that money.
09:12You're losing money, in essence, on interest, like potential interest gained.
09:16Now, I don't know the whole back end of the financial vehicle here.
09:19Maybe there's some way of escrow.
09:22I don't know where Miles could make money if the Browns sold his money.
09:25But you get my point.
09:25Generally speaking, the player needs something in return.
09:28It's without a doubt that this made a trade more palatable for the Browns, certainly with a cap hit.
09:37And here we are.
09:39The Rams called a number of years ago.
09:42And the Browns said no.
09:44They called in 2022.
09:45That got out this morning.
09:47Jordan Rodriguez and Zach Jackson wrote that in The Athletic.
09:49And the Browns said no.
09:52But you got to think plenty of teams have called over the years because the NFL isn't much different than
09:57your fantasy team.
09:59And that's what people got to realize.
10:00I mean, people throw a text at their buddies every now and then going, hey, you ever want to trade
10:05that guy?
10:06And you're right back.
10:07Like, go jump in a lake.
10:10So that's how it happens.
10:12And this time they finally got talking.
10:14Can I tell a quick, Jared, verse story?
10:16Yeah, go for it.
10:16I want to hear it.
10:17Yeah.
10:17Okay, so a couple of years ago, I was back in Los Angeles, and Jared had just been drafted and
10:22the Rams were doing their, like, annual charity 5K.
10:25So I was out at that to, you know, say hi to some people and get a nice workout in
10:28it.
10:29And Jared was there with Braden Fisk, who came in from Florida State.
10:33They were first and second round picks in the same year in 2024.
10:36And Jared and I were talking and, you know, just talking about, like, move to town stuff, like where to
10:41live and, you know, what kind of car to get and all that.
10:44And during our conversation, he takes out his phone and he starts typing.
10:47And he looks up and he goes, oh, no, no, I want you to know, I'm still listening.
10:50I'm not texting.
10:51I'm taking notes.
10:53And I said, you're taking notes?
10:55He's like, yeah.
10:56And he turns his phone around.
10:57I have a notes file, obviously, you know, the iPhone notes file.
11:01And, like, when I talk to people like you who, you know, you have good advice and you've lived here,
11:05I'm going to write all this down.
11:07I'm going to forget it.
11:09So he had a notes file as a rookie.
11:11He had just been in L.A. a couple of weeks where he was like, I'm not going to forget
11:16any of this stuff.
11:17And I'm going to have, like, a game plan for where I'm going to live and how I'm going to
11:22commute and what my day-to-day should be.
11:25And he was taking notes.
11:28Like, the guy's on top of it.
11:29You're going to love him.
11:30I promise you.
11:31Yeah, but you know what?
11:33That's really smart because living in L.A. is a little different than living in Akron.
11:37Or Dayton.
11:39Or Dayton.
11:39Or Dayton.
11:40Or Pennsylvania.
11:41Or Berea.
11:41Or Cleveland.
11:42Or Middleburg Heights.
11:42Or Crocker Park.
11:44Or wherever.
11:44I'd take notes if I had to move to L.A.
11:48I mean, take notes when you move anywhere.
11:51There's also an HR aspect to the entire NFL that I think people forget sometimes.
11:56And we're talking about 21, 22-year-old young men who, I mean, you guys, I don't know if you
12:01guys have kids college age, but, you know, we all have friends who have kids college age.
12:05We've all been in those shoes where you go to a new town and you've got to learn your way
12:09around.
12:09I mean, it's a major life transition.
12:13And we're hoping for these guys to actually perform on the football field as well.
12:16So, you know, remember there are people inside those uniforms.
12:19Here's my best advice.
12:20Find the bathroom first.
12:21Goodbye, Andrew.
12:22We appreciate you.
12:23Thank you, bud.
12:24Good man.
12:24Did I ramble a lot?
12:25I love you guys.
12:26No, no.
12:26You're great.
12:27We love you, Andrew.
12:27All right.
12:28We'll talk to you later.
12:28Peace.
12:30Andrew Siciliano, Browns play-by-play guy right here on the Browns Radio Network.
12:34On the Wise Heart Right, we make it right.
