00:17When a wicked person turns from the wickedness he has committed, and does what is just and right, he will
00:26preserve his life.
00:30For I am aware of my rebellious acts, I am forever conscious of my sin.
00:39Hide your face from my sins, wipe away all my guilt.
00:47The sacrifices God desires are a humble spirit, O God, a humble and repentant heart you will not reject.
01:01Dearly beloved brothers and sisters, the scripture moves us in sundry places to acknowledge and confess our many sins and
01:10wickedness.
01:12We should not justify nor hide them before the face of Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, but confess them with
01:20a humble, lowly, penitent and obedient heart.
01:24To the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy.
01:35Although we ought always to humbly acknowledge our sins before God, we should do this particularly when we assemble and
01:43meet together,
01:44to give thanks for the great benefits we have received at his hands.
01:48To give him most worthy praise, to hear his most holy word, and to ask those things which are truly
01:57necessary as well for the body as the soul.
02:02Therefore I pray and ask you, who are present here today, to accompany me with a pure heart and humble
02:09voice to the throne of the heavenly grace, as we say together.
02:16Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
02:23We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
02:29We have offended against your holy laws.
02:32We have failed to do those things which we ought to have done, and we have done things which we
02:39ought not to have done.
02:44But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable sinners.
02:49Spare those, O God, who confess their faults.
02:53Restore those who are truly penitent, according to your promises declared to mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord.
03:03Grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to
03:12the glory of your holy name. Amen.
03:18Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord, to your faithful people, pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all
03:26their sins, and serve you with a quiet mind.
03:30Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
03:38Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed be your name.
03:43Your kingdom come, your will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
03:50Give us this day our daily bread.
03:53Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
03:59Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
04:05For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
04:15O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing out your praise.
04:23O God, make speed to save us.
04:27O Lord, make haste to help us.
04:33Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
04:39As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
04:45Amen.
04:48Praise the Lord.
04:50The Lord's name be praised.
04:56Psalm 78
04:59Pay attention, my people, to my instruction.
05:03Listen to the words I speak.
05:06I will sing a song that imparts wisdom.
05:09I will make insightful observations about the past.
05:14What we have heard and learned, that which our ancestors have told us, we will not hide from their descendants.
05:22We will tell the next generation about the Lord's praiseworthy acts, about his strength, and the amazing things he has
05:29done.
05:31He has established a rule in Jacob.
05:33He has set up a law in Israel.
05:37He commanded our ancestors to make his deeds known to their descendants, so that the next generation, children yet to
05:46be born, might know about them.
05:49They will grow up and tell their descendants about them.
05:53Then they will place their confidence in God.
05:56They will not forget the works of God, and they will obey his commands.
06:02Then they will not be like their ancestors, who were a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that was not
06:09committed and faithful to God.
06:13The Ephraimites were armed with bows, but they retreated in a day of battle.
06:18They did not keep their covenant with God.
06:21They refused to obey his law.
06:24They forgot about what he had done, the amazing things he had shown them.
06:30He did amazing things in the sight of their ancestors, in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.
06:38He divided the sea and led them across it.
06:41He made the waters stand in a heap.
06:44He led them with a cloud by day and with the light of a fire all night long.
06:50He broke open rocks in the wilderness and gave them enough water to fill the depths of the sea.
06:57He caused streams to flow from the rock and made the waters flow like rivers.
07:04Yet they continued to sin against him and rebelled against the Most High in the desert.
07:12They willfully challenged God by asking for food to satisfy their appetite.
07:18They insulted, saying,
07:20Is God really able to give us food in the wilderness?
07:26Yes, he struck a rock and water flowed out, streams gushed forth.
07:32But can he also give us food?
07:34Will he provide meat for his people?
07:39When the Lord heard this, he was furious.
07:41A fire broke out against Jacob, and his anger flared against Israel,
07:46because they did not have faith in God and did not trust his ability to deliver them.
07:52He gave a command to the clouds above and opened the doors in the sky.
07:57He rained down manna for them to eat.
07:59He gave them the grain of heaven.
08:03Man ate the food of the mighty ones.
08:05He sent them more than enough to eat.
08:09He brought the east wind through the sky and by his strength led forth the south wind.
08:14He rained down meat on them like dust, birds as numerous as the sand on all the seashores.
08:22He caused them to fall right in the middle of their camp, all around their homes.
08:29They ate until they were beyond full.
08:32He gave them what they desired.
08:34They were not yet filled up, their food still in their mouths when the anger of God flared up against
08:41them.
08:41He killed some of the strongest of them.
08:44He brought the young men of Israel to their knees.
08:49Despite all this, they continued to sin and did not trust him to do amazing things.
08:56So he caused them to die unsatisfied and filled with terror.
09:01When he struck them down, they sought his favor.
09:04They turned back and longed for God.
09:07They remembered that God was their protector and that God Most High was their deliverer.
09:14But they deceived him with their words and lied to him.
09:18They were not really committed to him and they were unfaithful to his covenant.
09:25Yet he is compassionate.
09:27He forgives sin and does not destroy.
09:30He often holds back his anger and does not stir up his fury.
09:36He remembered that they were made of flesh and were like a wind that blows past and does not return.
09:43How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and insulted him in the wastelands.
09:50They again challenged God and defended the Holy One of Israel.
09:55They did not remember what he had done, how he had delivered them from the enemy when he performed his
10:01awesome deeds in Egypt and his acts of judgment in the region of Zoan.
10:07He turned their rivers into blood, and they could not drink from their streams.
10:12He sent swarms of biting insects against them, as well as frogs that overran their land.
10:20He gave their crops to the grasshopper, the fruit of their labor to the locust.
10:26He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore fig trees with driving rain.
10:34He ran down hail upon their cattle and hurled lightning bolts down on their livestock.
10:41His raging anger lashed out against them.
10:45He sent fury, rage and trouble as messengers who bring disaster.
10:51He sent his anger in full force.
10:53He did not spare them from death.
10:56He handed their lives over to destruction.
11:00He struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their reproductive power, in the tents of Ham.
11:08And yet he brought out his people like sheep.
11:12He led them through the wilderness like a flock.
11:15He guided them safely along, and they were not afraid.
11:19But the sea covered their enemies.
11:22He brought them to the border of his holy land, to the mightiest land which his right hand acquired.
11:30He drove the nations out from before them.
11:33He assigned them their tribal allotments, and allowed the tribes of Israel to settle down.
11:40Yet they challenged and defied God Most High, and did not obey his commands.
11:47They were unfaithful, and acted as treacherously as their ancestors.
11:52They were as unreliable as a malfunctioning bow.
11:56They made him angry with their pagan shrines, and made him jealous with their idols.
12:04God heard and was angry.
12:06He completely rejected Israel.
12:08He abandoned the sanctuary at Shiloh, the tent where he lived amongst men.
12:15He allowed the symbol of his strong presence to be captured.
12:19He gave the symbol of his splendour into the hand of the enemy.
12:24He delivered his people over to the sword, and was angry with his chosen nation.
12:31Fire consumed their young men, and their virgins remained unmarried.
12:37Their priests fell by the sword, but their widows did not weep.
12:42But then the Lord awoke from his sleep.
12:45He was like a warrior in a drunken rage.
12:48He drove his enemies back.
12:50He made them a permanent target for insults.
12:54He rejected the tent of Joseph.
12:56He did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
12:59He chose the tribe of Judah, and Mount Zion, which he loves.
13:04He made his sanctuary as enduring as the heavens above, as secure as the earth, which he established permanently.
13:13He chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds.
13:18He took him away from following the mother sheep, and made him the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and of
13:25Israel, his chosen nation.
13:28David cared for them with pure motives.
13:31He led them with skill.
13:34Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
13:38as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
13:45Amen.
13:48Amen.
13:52The second book of Kings, chapter 23.
13:57The king summoned all the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem.
14:02And went up to the Lord's temple, accompanied by all the people of Judah, all the residents of Jerusalem, the
14:09priests, and the prophets.
14:11All the people were there, from the youngest to the eldest.
14:16He read aloud the words of the scroll of the covenant that had been discovered in the Lord's temple.
14:23The king stood by the pillar, and renewed the covenant before the Lord, agreeing to follow the Lord, and to
14:31obey his commandments, laws, and rules, with all his heart, and being.
14:37The king, by carrying out the terms of the covenant, recorded on the scroll.
14:44All the people agreed to keep the covenant.
14:50The king ordered Hilkiah, the high-ranking priests, and the guards, to bring out of the Lord's temple, all the
14:57items that were used in the worship of Baal, Asherah, and all the stars of the sky.
15:05The king burned them outside Jerusalem, in the terraces of Kidron, and carried their ashes to Bethel.
15:13He eliminated the pagan priests, whom the kings of Judah had appointed to offer sacrifices, on the high places in
15:21the cities of Judah, and in the area around Jerusalem.
15:27These had offered sacrifices to Baal, the sun god, the moon god, the constellations, and all the stars in the
15:34sky.
15:36He removed the Asherah pole from the Lord's temple, and took it outside Jerusalem, to the Kidron Valley, where he
15:46burnt it.
15:47He smashed it to dust, and threw the dust in the public graveyard.
15:53He tore down the quarters of the male cult prostitutes in the Lord's temple, where women were weaving shrines for
16:01Asherah.
16:03He brought all the priests from the cities of Judah, and ruined the high places where the high priests had
16:10offered sacrifices, from Jeba to Beersheba.
16:15He tore down the high place of the goat idols, situated at the entrance of the gate of Joshua, the
16:23city official, on the left side of the city gate.
16:28Now the priests of the high places did not go up to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, but
16:35they did eat unleavened cakes with the fellow priests.
16:41The king ruined Topheth in the valley of Ben-Hinnon, so that no one could pass his son or daughter
16:47through the fire of Molech.
16:51He removed from the entrance to the Lord's temple the statues of horses that the kings of Judah had placed
16:58there in order of the sun god.
17:01They were kept near the room of Nathan-Melech the eunuch, which was situated among the courtyards.
17:09He burnt the chariots devoted to the sun god.
17:13The king tore down the altars of the kings of Judah, which had been set up on the roof of
17:19Ahaz's upper room, as well as the altars Manasseh had set up in the two courtyards of the Lord's temple.
17:28He crushed them up and threw the dust into the Kidron Valley.
17:33The king ruined the high places east of Jerusalem, south of the Mount of Destruction, that King Solomon of Israel
17:41had built for the detestable Sidonian goddess Astarte,
17:45the detestable Moabite god Chemosh, and the horrible Ammonite god Milcom.
17:52He smashed the sacred pillars to bits, cut down the Asherah pole, and filled those shrines with human bones.
18:02He also tore down the altar at Bethel, at the high place made by Jeroboam, son of Nabat, who had
18:10encouraged Israel to sin.
18:12He burnt all the combustible items at that high place, and crushed them to dust, including the Asherah pole.
18:23When Josiah turned around, he saw the tombs there on the hill.
18:28So he ordered the bones from the tombs to be brought, and he burnt them on the altar and defiled
18:35it.
18:37This fulfilled the Lord's announcement made by the prophet, while Jeroboam stood by the altar during the festival.
18:45King Josiah turned and saw the grave of the prophet, who had foretold this.
18:52He asked, What is this grave marker I see?
18:57The men from the city replied, It is the grave of the prophet who came from Judah,
19:03and foretold these very things that you have done to the altar of Bethel.
19:08The king said, Then leave it alone.
19:11No one must touch his bones.
19:15So they left his bones undisturbed, as well as those of the Israelite prophet buried beside him.
19:24Josiah also removed all the shrines of the high places in the cities of Samaria.
19:29The kings of Israel had made them and angered the Lord.
19:34He did to them what he had done to the high place in Bethel.
19:38He sacrificed all the priests of the high places on the altars located there,
19:44and burnt human bones upon them.
19:48Then he returned to Jerusalem.
19:53This is the word of the Lord.
19:56Thanks be to God.
20:15My soul exalts the Lord, and my spirit has begun to rejoice in God my Saviour,
20:23because he has looked upon the humble state of his servant.
20:28For from now on all generations will call me blessed,
20:32because he who is mighty has done great things for me,
20:37and holy is his name.
20:39From generation to generation he is merciful to those who fear him.
20:46He has demonstrated power with his arm.
20:49He has scattered those whose pride wells up from the sheer arrogance of their hearts.
20:55He has brought down the mighty from their thrones,
20:58and has lifted up those of lowly position.
21:02He has filled the hungry with good things,
21:05and has sent the rich away empty.
21:08He has helped his servant Israel,
21:11remembering his mercy as he promised to our ancestors,
21:16to Abraham, and to his descendants for ever.
21:21Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
21:25as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
21:30world without end.
21:32Amen.
21:47A reading from the first epistle of Saint Peter, chapter 1.
21:53From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
21:56to those temporarily living abroad,
21:59Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, the province of Asia,
22:04and Bithynia,
22:06who were chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,
22:09by being set apart by the Spirit,
22:12for obedience and for sprinkling with Jesus Christ's blood.
22:17May grace and peace be yours in full measure.
22:22Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
22:26By his great mercy,
22:28he gave us new birth into a living hope
22:31through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
22:35that is, into an inheritance
22:39imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.
22:42It is reserved in heaven for you,
22:45who, by God's power, are protected through faith,
22:49for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
22:54This brings you great joy,
22:57although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials.
23:02Such trials show the proven character of your faith,
23:06which is much more valuable than gold,
23:09gold that is tested by fire,
23:11even though it is passing away,
23:13and will bring praise and glory and honour
23:17when Jesus Christ is revealed.
23:21You have not seen him,
23:23but you love him.
23:24You do not see him now,
23:27but you believe in him,
23:28and so you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,
23:33because you are attaining the goal of your faith,
23:36the salvation of your souls.
23:42Concerning this salvation,
23:43the prophets who predicted the grace that would come to you
23:47searched and investigated carefully.
23:51They probed into what person or time
23:54the Spirit of Christ within them
23:56was indicating
23:58when he testified beforehand
24:00about the sufferings appointed for Christ
24:02and his subsequent glory.
24:06They were shown
24:07that they were serving not themselves,
24:09but you,
24:11in regard for the things now announced to you,
24:14through those who proclaim the gospel to you,
24:17by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.
24:21Things angels themselves long to catch a glimpse of.
24:27This is the word of the Lord.
24:30Thanks be to God.
24:48Now, according to your word,
24:50Sovereign Lord,
24:51permit your servant to depart in peace.
24:55For my eyes have seen your salvation
24:57that you have prepared
24:59in the presence of all peoples,
25:02a light for revelation to the Gentiles
25:05and for glory to your people Israel.
25:10Glory be to the Father
25:12and to the Son
25:13and to the Holy Spirit,
25:14as it was in the beginning,
25:16is now and ever shall be,
25:19world without end.
25:21Amen.
25:26I believe in God,
25:28the Father Almighty,
25:29maker of heaven and earth,
25:31and in Jesus Christ,
25:33his only Son,
25:34our Lord,
25:35who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
25:38born of the Virgin Mary,
25:40suffered unto Pontius Pilate,
25:43was crucified,
25:45dead and buried.
25:47He descended into hell.
25:49On the third day,
25:51he rose again from the dead.
25:53He ascended into heaven
25:55and is sitting at the right hand of God,
25:58the Father Almighty.
26:00From there,
26:01he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
26:05I believe in the Holy Spirit,
26:07the Holy Catholic Church,
26:09the communion of saints,
26:10the forgiveness of sins,
26:13the resurrection of the body
26:15and the life everlasting.
26:18Amen.
26:23The Lord be with you
26:25and with your spirit.
26:30Let us pray.
26:33Lord, have mercy upon us.
26:37Christ, have mercy upon us.
26:42Lord, have mercy upon us.
26:48Our Father,
26:49who is in heaven,
26:51holy is your name.
26:54May your kingdom come.
26:56May your will be done
26:58on earth as it is in heaven.
27:01Give us this day our daily bread.
27:03Lord, forgive us our trespasses,
27:06as we forgive those who trespass against us.
27:10Lead us not into temptation,
27:13but deliver us from evil.
27:15For yours is the kingdom,
27:18the power and the glory,
27:21for ever and ever.
27:22Amen.
27:28O Lord, show your mercy upon us
27:31and grant us your salvation.
27:37protect and guide those
27:39in authority over us
27:41and mercifully hear us
27:44when we call upon you.
27:47Endue your ministers
27:49with righteousness
27:51and make your chosen people joyful.
27:56O Lord, save your people
27:59and bless your inheritance.
28:04Give peace in our time, O Lord,
28:08because there is none other
28:09who fights for us
28:11but only you, O God.
28:14O God, make clean
28:16our hearts within us
28:19and take not
28:20your Holy Spirit
28:21from us.
28:31Let us pray.
28:33O Lord,
28:35who never fails to help
28:36and govern
28:37those
28:38who you bring up
28:39in your steadfast fear
28:40and love,
28:41keep us,
28:43we beseech you,
28:44under the protection
28:45of your good providence
28:47and make us have
28:48a perpetual fear
28:50and love
28:50of your Holy Name.
28:53Through Jesus Christ,
28:54our Lord.
28:56Amen.
29:04O God,
29:06from whom all holy desires,
29:09all good counsels
29:10and all just works proceed,
29:13give to your servants
29:14that peace
29:15which the world cannot give,
29:18that our hearts
29:19may be set to obey
29:20your commandments,
29:22and also that,
29:23by you,
29:25we,
29:25being defended
29:26from the fear
29:27of our enemies,
29:28may pass our time
29:30in rest and quietness.
29:32Through the merits
29:33of Jesus Christ,
29:35our Saviour.
29:36Amen.
29:41Lighten our darkness,
29:43we beseech you,
29:44O Lord,
29:45and by your great mercy
29:46defend us all
29:48from perils
29:49and dangers
29:50of this night.
29:51For the love
29:52of your only Son,
29:53our Saviour,
29:55Jesus Christ.
29:56Amen.
30:00Almighty God,
30:01who has given us grace
30:03at this time
30:04with one accord
30:05to make our common
30:06supplications to you
30:08and promises
30:09that when two or three
30:11are gathered together
30:12in your name,
30:13you will grant
30:14their requests.
30:17Fulfill now,
30:18O Lord,
30:19the desires
30:20and petitions
30:21of your servants
30:22as may be most
30:23beneficial for them,
30:26granting us
30:27in this world
30:28knowledge
30:28of your truth
30:29and in the world
30:31to come
30:32life everlasting.
30:34Amen.
30:37May the grace
30:38of our Lord Jesus Christ
30:40and the love of God
30:41and the fellowship
30:42of the Holy Spirit
30:43be with us all
30:45evermore.
30:47Amen.
