00:18We want to focus on love and we're going to remember our dear the Vivian with love and
00:28love.
00:35Walking by her photo at her booth still doesn't feel real.
00:37You see that photo and you think, she's bound to show up, I'll see her at a gig in a
00:41few months.
00:43She literally paved the way in terms of drag, I'm getting a bit emotional now, I'm sorry.
00:49And I keep getting surprised about when I'm getting emotional, I think things are fine
00:54and then I'll cry or, you know, something that should be sad is actually making me laugh.
00:58It's very weird.
01:00We went into DragCon five days after learning the news.
01:04That was horrible.
01:05Going into it was the weirdest, weirdest headspace.
01:10It was hard, but once you switched in the zone, you switched in the zone.
01:14And I want everybody to remember Vivian for what she was, which was a world-class entertainer.
01:22I wasn't going to do DragCon, but the reason I did DragCon was because of the money.
01:26They did the money to me.
01:29I'm only joking, I'm only joking, but it does help.
01:33Drag Race season one, we were like thick as thieves.
01:35We were two peas in a pod.
01:38We were Velma and Louise.
01:40You know what I mean?
01:41I made, oh, I don't want to cry.
01:43Yeah.
01:44I'm not going to ruin it.
01:46Yeah.
01:47Sorry.
01:49Yeah.
01:50She was amazing.
01:53We wanted to take this moment to thank the Vivian for all that you've given us.
02:00But in those five days, we said, how can we honor her?
02:06So our season one girls all got together.
02:08We stood in that V formation.
02:11We held those roses.
02:13Let this weekend be a celebration of your life, love, and devotion to the art of drag.
02:22Have everybody in one room.
02:26We walked that carpet.
02:29We were all there.
02:33The experience of season one of Drag Race was the best experience of my life.
02:41I just had a ball.
02:43We were all just so grateful to be there.
02:45We'd wanted this show for so long and we finally got it in the UK.
02:51You didn't have to know Viv to be sad about her passing.
02:56She's an entertainer.
02:57We are in your living rooms when you watch us on telly.
03:01The Vivian was British drag, but with this, like, modern polish to it.
03:07The live singing, the jokes.
03:09No shade to lip-sinkers.
03:10You have your place in the world.
03:13I was always, like, really proud.
03:15I'd tell everyone.
03:16I'd be like, oh, he's doing this now.
03:18He's doing that now.
03:20I think my favorite TV appearance would be Drag Race because that's where it all started.
03:29So this is when you first walk in.
03:33OK.
03:40I walked in the workroom and I was like, oh, my God, I'm first one.
03:43Oh.
03:45Bag of chips here, queen of the battered sausage.
03:50Have I got to talk?
03:51Oh, sit down.
03:53Then they were all coming in one by one.
03:56Oh, my God.
03:58Oh, my God.
03:58Oh, my God.
03:59Oh, my God.
04:03Oh, my God.
04:03Here we go.
04:03Standby.
04:04Then Vivian came out.
04:07Oh.
04:09Oh.
04:09We knew that last person walking into that workroom was going to be Viv.
04:13Yeah.
04:14Oh.
04:15And I was like, oh, God.
04:17We might as well all go home now.
04:19Oh.
04:20Well, didn't we all see it coming?
04:21Yeah.
04:22It is here.
04:24And what I will say is we heard her before she even walked in.
04:29OK.
04:30And.
04:34Because that fabulous outfit.
04:41And in that outfit it's hard enough to see it coming.
04:47She was polished right down to a tee and basically go, welcome to my show.
04:54Don't get too comfy girls.
04:56This isn't gonna take two minutes.
04:58Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
05:00Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
05:09Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
05:18Boisterous, adventurous, good baby, nice chunky one.
05:22They both were quite chunky, Chanel and James, yeah.
05:25I come from quite a small family, so there's just me,
05:28my mum Cassie, my dad Lee and my sister Chanel.
05:34He was single-minded, even at such a very young age.
05:40He just wanted to be into everything, see everything,
05:45be as mischievous as he possibly could.
05:48And generally, half the time, he achieved being as mischievous as he possibly could.
05:53Yeah.
05:56He was brought up here till he was five, and then we moved with Lee's job.
06:01When he was very young, he used to like performing in the bedroom
06:05and wearing Chanel's tutus.
06:07A memory that springs to mind straight away, when we went on a family holiday,
06:11he snuck off so my parents were having a meal
06:14with people we'd just met on holiday,
06:16and he snuck off into the ladies' bedroom
06:18and come out wearing nothing but a set of pearl earrings
06:22and a pearl necklace and the ladies' high heels.
06:25That was definitely a sign of things to come.
06:29At a very young age of about five,
06:32I put Chanel and James into a stage school,
06:35only at the local leisure centre.
06:37And he did Bugsy Malone at a very early age in theatre.
06:44I just love to make people laugh with voices
06:46and different characters that are inside of me.
06:49Will you sit the fuck up?
06:50What have I told you?
06:52Will someone get me a drink, please?
06:55From a young age, he'd always do impersonations or impressions,
07:00so we'd watch a film,
07:02and then he'd be able to just take on the voice,
07:06the actions, everything.
07:08Here you are.
07:09Do an impression of dog on the stick, James.
07:11Turn it off.
07:12Do an impression of dog on the stick.
07:14Go, James.
07:16You're lucky.
07:19Oh, I'm sorry to frighten you, dear.
07:23I must look like a yeti in this ghetto.
07:25You must find the book,
07:26brew the potion,
07:27and pack the lives out of all the children
07:28and sing before some rise.
07:30Set to its curtains.
07:31Oh, that's it.
07:32Hello.
07:34Hi, can I have...
07:35Can I have a large Big Mac meal, please?
07:41At school, James was mischievous,
07:44wanted to be the centre of attention,
07:45generally became centre of attention.
07:48He was going to school where I worked,
07:50and generally, he was in trouble every day.
07:54Every day for something.
07:56Nothing major.
07:58Right, come here.
08:00Come here, so the voice, you think.
08:05And for me, a bane.
08:08Right there, I'll just get some healing.
08:11Because every time I went in for lunch in school where I worked,
08:14I was met by staff saying,
08:17couldn't just have a word with James, could you?
08:18That's what I'd have to do,
08:20to a point where I never went for lunch.
08:23Somebody couldn't get me.
08:25At Rydell, the 350 boys and girls
08:28obviously receive a firm academic grounding.
08:32But alongside that,
08:33there are a large number of sporting,
08:35cultural and recreational activities on offer.
08:40I was very fortunate.
08:41My parents put me through private school,
08:43which meant that the classes were small,
08:46and everyone was just nice.
08:48You know, I came out at 14 in school,
08:50and I was already on the rugby team at that point,
08:53and I'd already kind of made friends
08:55by being stupid and silly and the class clown
08:58and doing impressions to people.
09:00So by the time I came out,
09:01everyone was just like,
09:02yeah, we knew.
09:04We know.
09:07I'm a huge, huge, huge Cher fan.
09:10When I was about 14,
09:12I was just YouTubing Cher performances.
09:14And then I found this video of her performing
09:17in this tiny little gay bar,
09:19and I was like,
09:19what the hell is Cher doing performing
09:22in this tiny little gay bar?
09:24And it wasn't until I read the description.
09:26It said Chad Michaels as Cher.
09:29My mind was just blown.
09:31I was like, what?
09:32This is a man?
09:34He's the spitting image of Cher.
09:36So this just sent me into a massive,
09:38you know, rabbit hole of research
09:40and these other people.
09:41I found Derek Barry doing Britney Spears.
09:45I'd say, like, I do impressions,
09:46but I wouldn't say I'm, like, a voice.
09:49You know, I think some voices just speak to you.
09:52I'm off to do my lyrics, girls.
09:54Oh, good luck.
09:55Oh, some peace and quiet.
09:57Oh, finally, a bit of quiet round here.
10:00You know the two old men in the Muppets
10:02that sit up on the balcony
10:04and just talk shit all day?
10:07That was Viv and Bagger
10:08in their little make-up confidence corner over there.
10:12Ah!
10:13Oh, God.
10:14We just clicked that little bit more.
10:16We were a couple of fat bastards.
10:18Jaina.
10:21Vagina.
10:22Like, when we did the Snatch Game,
10:23we were like, oh, yeah, let's bounce off each other.
10:25It was like playing tennis.
10:26Oh!
10:28Right, let's start with Bagger.
10:31The lady's not for turning.
10:33Ha, ha, ha, ha.
10:34Maggie Thatcher.
10:35Maggie Mae, yeah.
10:37I've been waiting 10 years to do this.
10:38Snatch Game is in the bag for me.
10:40I cannot wait.
10:42There's been no collusion with Russia.
10:44Oh.
10:44Melania, my wife, she's great.
10:46I bought her on eBay.
10:47She learned three new words this week.
10:49She's absolutely tremendous.
10:51That's fucking scary.
10:53Well, the characters worked so well to get by
10:55because obviously they're two Republican politicians.
10:58You've got, like, the monster and the witch.
11:00I could be like, oh, let's take all the money
11:03from all the fucking poor people,
11:05give it to the rich.
11:06And you could be like, yeah, that's a great idea.
11:07We can do all that.
11:08Oh, my goodness.
11:09I loved Gorbachev.
11:11I know you.
11:12Oh, the stories I could tell.
11:13I bet you could.
11:15I'm not going to lie.
11:16She is.
11:16She's turning me on, but I'm not into necrophilia.
11:19Ha, ha, ha.
11:20We've got the same sense of humor,
11:21so I was like, I'm going to give you this,
11:22and then she'd give me one back,
11:24and I'd give her one back,
11:25and she'd give me one back.
11:26We were like Venus and Serena.
11:28If anyone knew how to fuck up a country, it was her.
11:31Oh, I love you too,
11:33but please keep those orange cheesy bulls
11:36away from my face.
11:38Ha, ha, ha.
11:39After the stash game,
11:40we walked out of that performance,
11:43walking out of the studio, like...
11:49Don't, because I'm having PTSD.
11:53Did you train as a makeup artist?
11:55No, I completely blagged it.
11:57I finished school,
11:59and I went for a makeup interview when I was 15.
12:03So I got the job, moved to Liverpool,
12:05and the rest is history.
12:09James decided he wanted to move away at 16.
12:15When he went to Liverpool,
12:17I was so worried.
12:26It was a bit awkward in the sense of leaving him at such a young age,
12:31but single-mindedness again took over,
12:35and I'll be fine, I'll be great,
12:37don't you worry about me.
12:40You know, but you do worry.
12:43James was born in North Wales,
12:46but the Vivian was born in Liverpool.
12:48Hi, guys.
12:50Sorry I haven't done a video in ages,
12:52but I've decided to do one,
12:54so I'm going to be showing you how to do this look.
12:58Moving to Liverpool,
12:59I worked in makeup,
13:00and I worked at a bar called Pink behind the bar
13:03when I was 16,
13:04but I said I was older.
13:06Seeing the drag queens
13:08and seeing how much fun they were having,
13:09so I just spoke to the owner one night and said,
13:11can I have a little go of this?
13:13I think I'd be dead good.
13:14So he was like, yeah, go on, love,
13:15I'll give you a blue wickers
13:17and about 20 quid a night,
13:18and then that's how it all started.
13:23She started working in her first venue in Liverpool,
13:26which was Pink.
13:29It was a good venue.
13:32It was a popular venue,
13:33but it wasn't really renowned for good drag.
13:37Tiara Fletcher was one of the queens
13:39that gave me one of my first gigs in Liverpool,
13:41and she was the first one to say to me,
13:43don't you ever come to this club again
13:45with no eyelashes on,
13:46otherwise you are not going on stage,
13:48which put the fear of God into me.
13:50I wasn't just his friend.
13:52I was the driver, the PA,
13:57and I know everything in between,
13:59so we'd all left home.
14:00We were young, free, and wild.
14:05Viv was massively obsessed with drag race.
14:08She was massively obsessed with drag.
14:09She'd wake up in the morning and think about drag.
14:14We'd go back to mine after work,
14:17and we'd have to watch episodes after episodes of drag race.
14:20And if I was lucky,
14:22she'd stop drag race,
14:24and then we'd get to watch Cher live,
14:27or Cher videos,
14:28or Cher this.
14:29And he went through loads of different eras.
14:33The first time I knew of James or Vivian,
14:36she was in some mad phase
14:39with these little pink eyebrows.
14:41And I know she'll be looking down like this.
14:45My hair.
14:48If it wasn't pink hair,
14:50or green hair,
14:51or orange hair,
14:52he'd have, like, a moho.
14:54It just looked wild.
14:57And I'm going to be doing this look,
14:59quite inspired from Cher.
15:04When Viv got on the scene
15:07and took hold of the venue,
15:08she did really well.
15:09She was smashing it.
15:10She was always really popular
15:13from the very beginning.
15:14A couple of months into that,
15:16that's when we poached her
15:18from Pink to come and work
15:19at Superstar Boudoir with us.
15:21Don't want to talk once
15:23and discover the meaning of life.
15:24You're better off darling
15:24a bottle of whiskey.
15:30When I first started doing drag,
15:31I was 16 in Liverpool
15:33and I'd always be wearing,
15:35very much like today,
15:36always wearing Vivian Westwood.
15:38And people just started calling me Vivian.
15:40And then when I started doing drag,
15:42it just had to be Vivian.
15:44Now in the age of social media
15:45where you can't just have one name
15:47going into a search engine,
15:48I thought,
15:49Sir, Vivian.
15:51And here we are.
15:55In London in the 1970s,
15:58Vivian Westwood was the guiding spirit
16:00of the punk image.
16:03I was so outraged
16:05at the way the world is so corrupt
16:07and mismanaged and everything
16:09that the look was supposed to be
16:11of an urban gorilla.
16:13There was a lot of people
16:15who wear Vivian Westwood
16:16that the Vivian was attracted to,
16:19including Pete Burns.
16:22I just love what she's about.
16:24She's fabulous.
16:28Jesus Christ, Vivian.
16:30Sorry about it.
16:31Right, let's go.
16:33One, two, three, go.
16:35I feel like it was almost as if
16:38she knew that she was going to do
16:42bigger things than just work in local venues.
16:46Hi!
16:48You're all right!
16:50She was really spiritual in a way,
16:54I think she believes in manifestation
16:57and, you know,
16:58what you put out,
16:58you get back.
17:00I think I always knew
17:01it was going to happen
17:02and become a drag queen
17:03because even when I got into makeup,
17:05looking back now,
17:06it was kind of like
17:07I was always preparing myself
17:08and putting myself
17:09through the ringer
17:10of learning these skills
17:11so that once I became
17:13to be a drag queen
17:14then I was already okay at makeup.
17:16Thank God I've got
17:17a very accepting family.
17:19I think they were a bit
17:20shocked at first
17:21because they put me
17:22through private school
17:23at first.
17:24I wanted to be,
17:24you know,
17:25like a doctor
17:26or something else.
17:27So then for them to see me
17:29kind of move to Liverpool
17:30and become what they thought
17:33was me either
17:34wanting to be a woman.
17:36I think once they realised
17:38I was safe,
17:38I was happy,
17:39I was doing something I love
17:40and it was just purely
17:41for entertainment,
17:41I think they were
17:42absolutely fine with it.
17:45He always kept in contact
17:47with us
17:48but I do think
17:49that there was a little bit
17:50of separation in,
17:51you know,
17:52things that he was doing there
17:54that he maybe didn't want us
17:55to know the full extent
17:57of what life looked like.
18:04I never used to show
18:05the boy's side to me,
18:06I never used to go out,
18:07it was always Vivian,
18:08Vivian, Vivian.
18:09I was always in drag
18:10because I loved that confidence
18:11so it is like a superhero cape.
18:17Well I used to find it hard
18:18finding a balance
18:19of Viv and James.
18:21I just didn't take care of James.
18:24I didn't buy myself new clothes
18:25because I was buying it
18:26all for Vivian.
18:29Filming out.
18:31And I just didn't
18:33take care of myself.
18:36When he was James
18:37instead of Vivian
18:38he said he felt like
18:39his arm was off.
18:41Drag,
18:42that's what gave him security.
18:44As we know
18:44he was absolutely amazing at it.
18:47I wouldn't go out the house
18:48unless I was in drag
18:49at one point.
18:50I became Vivian
18:51because Vivian was so strong
18:53and everyone loved Vivian
18:54and Vivian was great on stage
18:56and I completely lost James.
18:59As queer people
19:01we often hide from emotions
19:05because we're raised on emotions.
19:08We're traumatised and bullied
19:11and the only way to protect yourself
19:13is to not deal with it.
19:17I love bagger.
19:18It's my job
19:18and it's the best job in the world
19:19but it's like
19:20it's my superhero costume.
19:22Nobody can help bagger.
19:24That's why I'm always in it
19:25because I just
19:26it's nice to get away from Mark
19:27because
19:29Mark is bagger.
19:31Oh.
19:32I was at a bad place in my life
19:34and now I'm kind of seeing that in Mark
19:36so I want to do everything that I can
19:38to make sure Mark feels loved
19:39and that he does feel important.
19:42And what was the bad place?
19:53I was a drug addict for
19:55four years of my life
19:57and my family don't even know.
20:00My friends know
20:01and I've always said
20:03I've always said that
20:04it never bothered me or anything
20:06and I was just
20:07oh yeah whatever
20:09but like
20:10it did bother me
20:11I was pissing me life up the wall
20:13and I could have been dead now
20:14if I hadn't done anything about it.
20:19Anything's possible
20:20if you put your mind to it.
20:21Yeah.
20:21I was a drug addict
20:22for four years girl.
20:24I was a drug addict
20:25for four years girl.
20:27My family don't even know about it.
20:34I didn't know till that point
20:36about it at all.
20:37He obviously hid it from me.
20:41I spoke to him about it after.
20:43I said you know
20:43why did you want to say that on there?
20:45You know I didn't know
20:46but he was open and honest.
20:52I never went on Drag Race
20:54to tell the world.
20:56After the show had aired
20:57my dad just said
20:59I wish you'd have told me
21:00you're dickhead.
21:01I love you.
21:05I think he
21:07he held that from us
21:08to protect us.
21:11For me I think it was
21:12the easiest way
21:13I could have done it
21:14because I don't think
21:15I could have told them
21:15to their face.
21:17Working in the clubs
21:18all the time
21:18it becomes a normal thing.
21:20It does.
21:20So you step back
21:21and look at what you were doing
21:22you were like
21:23whoa
21:24we were nuts.
21:25Like
21:26we were crazy people.
21:27we'd stay up
21:28for seven days straight
21:29and start getting
21:29like sleep deprivation
21:31psychosis and everything.
21:32It was really bad
21:33and I think it's
21:34so prevalent
21:35on the gay scene.
21:37It's very brave
21:38to mention all that
21:40on television
21:41where millions of people
21:42are going to watch
21:42and judge.
21:45Being on the BBC
21:46talking about having
21:47a ketamine addiction
21:48could have actually
21:49backfired on you
21:50and could have actually
21:51blacklisted you
21:52but the fact that
21:53you were brave enough
21:55to share that story
21:56people really
21:56resonated with it.
21:58I came to Liverpool
22:00when I was 16
22:00and said I'd never
22:01touch a drug
22:02oh no I'm not like that
22:03and then
22:04you get offered
22:05half a pill
22:06oh it's fine
22:07it's only half a pill
22:07I'm dancing
22:08I'm having a good night
22:09ketamine was my
22:10drug of choice
22:11now I was fully
22:12functioning on it
22:13you'd never know
22:13I was on it
22:14it becomes so normal
22:15in your head
22:16I could be walking
22:17around town shopping
22:18you wouldn't have
22:19known I was on it
22:19but I was
22:20constantly on it
22:23how early is it Viv?
22:25oh what are you doing Viv?
22:27um
22:27just
22:28making my ass
22:30making my hair
22:32leave me alone
22:35did we have a
22:36conversation about it?
22:38don't think we did
22:45do I wish we had?
22:51yeah
22:56yeah
22:56yeah I do
23:04so many performers
23:06go down the same route
23:07I'm on stage
23:08four nights a week
23:10with the biggest high ever
23:11standing on stage
23:12entertaining people
23:13making them laugh
23:13singing them songs
23:14so
23:15you come off stage
23:16and go back to your
23:18normal day
23:20and you need something
23:21that's gonna match that high
23:23but the truth is
23:24it never matches that high
23:25it just ruins your life
23:32the world does give you
23:33these stage directions
23:34and mine was
23:36sitting in my flat
23:37addicted to this drug
23:39and something said to me
23:41move to Spain
23:42sort your head out
23:45so the Gran Canaria drag scene
23:47it's very kind of
23:48Brits abroad
23:49tourism
23:50you know
23:51dad jokes
23:53it's a typical thing
23:54you'd expect from
23:55a holiday drag show
23:56but it's where
23:57I cut my teeth
23:58learned how to do
23:59audience work
24:00and chatting a mic
24:01who's never ever been
24:02the sparkles before
24:03this is your first time
24:04in the venue
24:04hands up
24:05can you stand up for me
24:07turn around
24:08face the audience
24:10this is what
24:10castle people look like
24:14and then
24:15Vivian joined
24:16I've just got ready
24:17for work
24:18as you all know
24:19by now
24:19I'm living in Gran Canaria
24:21so I'm a bit more
24:23tanned than usual
24:24and
24:26so yeah
24:26I'm gonna be
24:28getting more and more
24:29tanned
24:29I hope not too much
24:31tanned
24:31we did so many numbers
24:33together
24:33had so many ideas
24:34we did
24:35a comedy Titanic routine
24:36where we built a ship
24:38she did like a Lady Gaga
24:40I think we made
24:40the outfit for that
24:42and Vivian just
24:43was magic
24:44at her
24:49I remember him
24:52saying that he was
24:53gonna go to
24:53Gran Canaria
24:56but it's not until
24:59Drag Race
24:59that we knew
25:01that that was the
25:01reason that he'd gone
25:03was because
25:03things here
25:05had become so bad
25:07I never thought
25:08I'd find
25:08love or
25:10anything serious
25:11you know
25:12I mean everyone
25:13has a sex life
25:14but even that
25:15you know
25:15you'd completely
25:16hide what you do
25:18for a living
25:19Vivian what are you doing?
25:20that I'm just brushing me in
25:22just so somebody
25:23will show you
25:24a little bit of affection
25:28before I met
25:29David
25:29it was just me
25:30he went like this
25:31from Manchester
25:32I went from Liverpool
25:33both landed on the same island
25:36I'd been clean for
25:37about three months
25:38when I met David
25:39David was really
25:40the cork in the bottle
25:41of me stopping
25:43and he gave me
25:44something to live for
25:46the first night
25:48I ever met David
25:49I was staying
25:49at James' apartment
25:51and David and James
25:53came home
25:53and David said to me
25:55I'll never forget
25:56he said I'm going
25:57to marry your son
25:58and I said
25:59like hell you are
26:00and that was that
26:01next time I went over
26:03which was the year after
26:04they'd moved
26:05to a different apartment
26:06and they were living together
26:07I got on very well
26:09with David
26:12he just made me feel
26:13like I was a
26:1416 year old girl again
26:17and it just made me
26:18it was
26:19he made me feel nervous
26:20and
26:21and fluttery
26:25before I met David
26:26I longed for
26:28just
26:29a date
26:31or
26:31just someone
26:33to look at you
26:34like
26:34you'd
26:35cause I used to stand
26:36in a DJ box
26:37and you'd see these
26:38gay guys come in
26:39and
26:40and they'd just be
26:41so interested in each other
26:42and
26:43you'd just stand there
26:44like
26:44oh well there's Viv
26:45the funny drag queen
26:51but now
26:52thank god
26:53I found David

28:50you've got
28:50and she could sing
28:51like Cher
28:51if I could turn
28:53back town

29:11I won't take it
29:13I don't like it
29:14stop
29:14while you're ahead
29:16and I remember
29:17I saying
29:17like

29:25and I just knew
29:27I was like
29:28this is what
29:28we need
29:29it's that old school
29:31rough and ready drag
29:33that I come from
29:34but with the polished look
29:35and
29:37I just knew
29:38she was going to get it
29:40I remember him
29:41saying to me
29:42mum
29:43anybody can put a wig
29:44on a dress on
29:45but like he said
29:46on RuPaul
29:46he's going to be
29:47polished
29:48and he was polished
29:49every time
29:52let's say hello
29:53to the Vivian's mum
29:54Cassie
30:00when he saw me
30:01he was like

30:11darling
30:11yeah
30:12James is six foot three

30:15right first things first
30:17have you shaved your minge
30:18James
30:22please
30:22don't put that on camera
30:25I remember us
30:26clapping hands like that
30:27and saying
30:27we're going to do this
30:29and
30:31we did
30:31ready

30:55and have a little vote please
30:56oh my god yes
30:57team legs
30:58she's got the legs
30:59all for the legs
31:00all for the legs
31:00right can we have a vote
31:02cover the legs
31:03no
31:04show the legs
31:05yes
31:07mother
31:09they're coming out
31:10he did me make up
31:12perfect
31:12lovely
31:13then we had another argument
31:15this hair's gorgeous
31:18oh that's
31:19not the difference
31:22that's it Cassie
31:23no
31:25I wanted the wig he had on
31:27and he wouldn't let me have it
31:28he put me in this hideous one
31:31where I look like a Pekingese
31:34I hated it
31:35but I did it
31:37I wore it
31:38I wore better in the slettos
31:41what do you think
31:43which looks the best
31:45it was scary
31:46it was scary
31:46but I knew I needed to do it
31:48I knew I needed to do it
31:50and I did it
31:51upper lands
31:54the family that slays together
31:56stays together
31:57that's right
31:58she gave birth to me
32:00she's the reason
32:01that I'm here today
32:02so what better way
32:04to say thank you
32:05than bring her on drag race
32:06and highlight her breasts
32:10very sweet
32:10all right
32:11thank you ladies
32:13and then when I went back to work
32:14two days later
32:15they wondered why I had glitter
32:17all over me face
32:21we're all fighting for the crown
32:23but I don't think we're all gonna
32:25kick each other under the bus
32:26on the way
32:26listen it's hard
32:27we're in a competition
32:28I think
32:28if I come to you and say
32:30oh maybe put a skirt with that
32:31maybe in your head
32:32you're thinking
32:32is she trying to fuck me over
32:34I can put my hand on my heart
32:35and say if I give you his advice
32:36it's because I mean it
32:37and I think it will look
32:38fucking brilliant
32:38and it will help you
32:39on that runway
32:40I'm not gonna stand there
32:41and sew shit for you
32:42but I will help you
32:43be the best that you can see
32:44because it reflects on UK drag
32:45as a season as well
32:46you look after one another
32:47except for me
32:50that's the type of person
32:51that she was
32:51she championed other people
32:54she didn't gatekeep
32:55she did give me some tips
32:57on makeup
32:57she gave me tips on wigs
32:59she'd say
32:59bagger if you
32:59you need to blend it in
33:01a bit more here
33:01she was a good sister
33:02because she'd tell you
33:03if you looked a bastard
33:04you know what I mean
33:05she'd be like
33:05girl you've got a big air
33:06coming out your nose
33:07or something
33:07you've got a big bogey
33:09hanging out
33:09you've got a bit of shite
33:11on the back of your dress
33:11if that was me personally
33:13I wouldn't tell the person
33:14I'd just let them
33:15go on stage like it
33:17I think a moment
33:18that defines Viv for me
33:20is during lockdown
33:22which Viv sold
33:24so much of her drag
33:25not to raise money
33:26for herself
33:27but to raise money
33:28for local queens
33:29in Liverpool
33:31who were you know
33:32struggling
33:32because they couldn't
33:33go to work
33:35and that's like
33:36something that completely
33:37sums her up as a person
33:38it's like looking out
33:39for others
33:41until you
33:42give that money
33:43and see the help
33:44that it's done
33:44I don't think you'll ever
33:45understand how much
33:46charity helps
33:49once he said to me
33:50I'm going on RuPaul
33:52I said to Chanel
33:53he'll win
33:56without any question
33:57whatsoever
33:58there's only going to be
33:59one winner
33:59and that will be James
34:01I didn't actually know
34:03he'd won it
34:04on the night
34:04I didn't want to know
34:06until I got home
34:07from work
34:07which was like
34:08half past nine at night
34:09and I said to the girls
34:11do not tell me
34:12who has won RuPaul's Drag Race
34:15and I got home
34:16and I went to my neighbours
34:17and we watched it together
34:18and yeah
34:19it was amazing
34:20the time has come
34:22to crown our queen
34:24the UK's first drag race
34:28superstar is
34:35the Vivian
34:41she adored the art of drag
34:44she perfected it
34:46she stood at it
34:47the Vivian
34:48my queen
34:50is there anything
34:51you'd like to say
34:52yeah
34:53I've dropped my nail
34:56can we do that again
34:59no no no
35:00have we got any
35:01super glue hunting
35:06we didn't know
35:07what was going to happen
35:08beyond season one
35:10of Drag Race UK
35:11all we knew was
35:13we were given
35:13an incredible opportunity
35:15to show UK drag
35:16at its finest
35:17and whatever came
35:18we were grateful for
35:21now
35:21once that became
35:23and he won
35:24the Vivian elevated
35:25to another level
35:27she's funny
35:28filthy and fabulous
35:29it's the Vivian
35:31where are you going
35:32career wise
35:33are you going into music then
35:34well I mean
35:35I kind of you know
35:35got me fingers
35:36in all sorts of pies
35:37you know
35:38because you've done a telly show
35:38didn't you as well
35:39you've done a telly show
35:40yeah the Vivian
35:41takes on Hollywood
35:42cut
35:42it was always a joy
35:50to interview
35:50the Vivian
35:51always
35:52and Lorraine
35:52I think
35:53I think you could
35:54replace Melania
35:55I could take you
35:55on holiday to China
35:56funny
35:57smart
35:58kind
35:59interesting
36:00good morning
36:01ladies and gentlemen
36:02I'm Donald Trump
36:03and I'm Margaret Thatcher
36:04and you are watching
36:05Morning TNT
36:07we basically
36:08were talking about
36:09what do you want
36:10to achieve
36:11their dream would be
36:12someday to do
36:13theatre
36:13musical theatre
36:14but in the short term
36:15what they really wanted
36:16to do is use this
36:17opportunity from being
36:17on the show
36:18and somehow
36:19transform that into
36:20a long term
36:21entertainment career
36:21ladies and gentlemen
36:22please welcome
36:23Back and Head's
36:24most celebrated daughter
36:25the blonde
36:26bopsite herself
36:27Miss Lily Savage
36:40in the UK
36:41since Lily Savage
36:43there hasn't really been
36:44a drag artist
36:45that's been on TV
36:46if you look back
36:47in the day
36:48you know we had
36:49Damon Everidge
36:50look at me
36:51am I overdressed
36:52I think I am
36:53I wanted to know
36:55Judy and Sharon
36:57what funeral
36:58have you just
36:58been
37:01but then you'd have
37:02you know people
37:02like Benny Hill
37:03on TV
37:03doing drag
37:04it's a long time
37:05since I saw you
37:06in the flesh
37:07Alan you wouldn't
37:09recognise the old
37:10place now
37:12that had always been
37:12a part of British
37:13culture that I think
37:14that we massively
37:15lost
37:15I think Viv
37:16has done a huge
37:17amount to bring
37:18drag in the UK
37:19back into the
37:20mainstream
37:21oh yeah this is
37:22a lovely road
37:23oh it's great
37:25Viv was bringing
37:26it back from where
37:26it once was
37:27she was sort of
37:28like the next one
37:29to take that crown
37:30from Lily Savage
37:31you know he was
37:32thinking then
37:33where can I go
37:33from here
37:34and I have to say
37:35that Simon
37:36his manager
37:37was amazing
37:39hold on
37:40you're going to be
37:40seeing a lot more
37:41of this
37:41they were working
37:42on plans
37:43all the time
37:44for where their
37:45next stage
37:46would be
37:46might you buy
37:47me a drink
37:49I'm with someone
37:50well that's nice
37:51so you got your
37:52wallet
37:52I spoke for years
37:54to the reality
37:54shows about
37:55trying to put
37:56Viv on it
37:56and there was
37:56such resistance
37:57about putting
37:58a drag star
37:59on even then
38:01because I think
38:01it was seen
38:02as a bit of a
38:02gimmick
38:03they're a star
38:03as much as
38:04anyone else
38:05regardless of
38:05what they're
38:06wearing
38:06and what their
38:06makeup is
38:07boss
38:08we just got
38:09some AMPR
38:09on Vivian
38:10and the
38:10Rolls Royce
38:11we did
38:12Celebrity Hunted
38:13which was
38:13absolutely amazing
38:15this is the road
38:16we just need to
38:17get inside
38:18like ASAP
38:19she's done
38:20countless TV shows
38:21a finalist
38:22on Dancing
38:23on Ice
38:23and should have
38:24won
38:24and then into
38:25the solo
38:26step sequence
38:27where the Vivian
38:27looks as slick
38:29as if walking
38:29in Memphis
38:30and the judges
38:32challenge
38:32show them
38:33attempt the
38:34watch jump
38:34into
38:35toe loop
38:36that got a big
38:36roar from the crowd
38:37it's so incredible
38:38what she was able
38:40to achieve
38:40and we were able
38:41to achieve together
38:42by the end of the
38:43series she was
38:44a true skater
38:46and that was
38:46an absolute joy
38:47to witness
38:49as her partner
38:56at one point
38:58you know
38:58different suggestions
38:59were being made
39:00comedy numbers
39:01this and that
39:01and Vivian
39:02said no
39:03I want to do
39:04this very
39:05seriously
39:06and be really
39:07good
39:07and they did
39:09people that
39:09weren't actively
39:11watching drag
39:12they were being
39:13introduced to drag
39:14and she was the
39:15perfect role model
39:16to do so
39:17to be able to do
39:18this
39:18especially at a
39:19time now when
39:20drag is fully
39:21under attack
39:21to show that
39:23drag is nothing
39:23but entertainment
39:24when we're
39:25nothing to be
39:25feared
39:26we just want
39:27to have fun
39:36the time has
39:37come for the
39:37English queen
39:38here in America
39:39to show these
39:41bitches how it's
39:42done
39:47she has done
39:48so much with
39:50her career
39:50so it made
39:51sense that she
39:52was part of
39:53this all
39:53winners season
39:54welcome to
39:55all stars
39:56all winners
39:57there was such
40:00an anticipation
40:00to it
40:01you know
40:03all of a sudden
40:04being introduced
40:05as the first
40:05eight winners
40:07on an all stars
40:08very very special
40:10as a little
40:11British queen
40:12I'm getting shown
40:13to the public
40:14of America
40:14this could be
40:15a huge revival
40:16for me
40:17I feel like
40:18I've not only
40:19got to prove
40:20myself
40:21but I'm kind
40:21of representing
40:22a country as
40:22well
40:23so the weight
40:24on these shoulders
40:25is like
40:25so if you
40:27don't win
40:29she's the first
40:30winner of any
40:32international franchise
40:335, 6, 7, 8
40:35and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
40:39David my husband
40:40has left me
40:41in my luggage
40:42because he helped
40:43me pack
40:43he's left me
40:44two little notes
40:46that he told me
40:47not to open
40:47until halfway through
40:49which I may have
40:50opened a little earlier
40:51but I didn't get
40:52all the way through
40:52I put them away
40:53because they were
40:53making me emotional
40:54and I just miss him
40:56and I just miss him
40:56so much
40:57Vivian and I
40:58were really close
40:59so she confided
41:01in me with
41:01a lot of things
41:03so I'm doing this
41:05on my own
41:05in another country
41:06where I just want
41:08these queens
41:09to just acknowledge
41:09that
41:10I don't know
41:11I know I'm talented
41:12and I know I'm a great queen
41:13but I feel like
41:14the runt of the litter
41:15and that's never
41:16something I've ever
41:16had to experience
41:18and I don't know
41:19how to deal
41:19with that yet
41:22I'd just love
41:23to speak to David
41:26I knew a lot
41:27of things
41:27that she wouldn't
41:28share on social media
41:30about her
41:32relationship
41:32with her husband
41:33at the time
41:33with you know
41:34relationships
41:35with other people
41:36like we were girlfriends
41:37you know what I mean
41:38like I told her things
41:39and she told me things
41:41if David was here now
41:42he would say
41:44get out of your head
41:46have fun
41:47you're amazing
41:48and I miss you
41:50and stop taking it
41:54so bloody seriously
41:55it's drag
42:04Vivian had big plans
42:06she was very ambitious
42:09and very driven
42:13and then she started
42:14getting into the theatre world
42:17when they got the call
42:19to say
42:19we'd like you to
42:20audition for
42:21Wizard of Oz
42:22from Andrew Lloyd Webber's office
42:24Viv was just like
42:25blown away
42:28Andrew Lloyd Webber's people
42:29were messaging me
42:31after the first rehearsal
42:32saying
42:32how on earth
42:33is she off script
42:34she's absolutely amazing
42:35Viv sent me
42:36a WhatsApp video
42:37of her
42:38in the first rehearsal
42:39singing the big song
42:40from the show
42:41but most of all
42:42I want my slippers
42:44now go
42:45fly
42:46I remember
42:52that he reenacted
42:54the entire Wizard of Oz
42:56on his own
42:57from his bedroom
42:58that's truly living out
43:00the dream
43:04and I think that was
43:06when she was most happy
43:07when she got that part
43:08it was like
43:09okay
43:10this is moving
43:11where I want it to move
43:12my dream
43:13is to be in musical theatre
43:16have a look
43:21being in Andrew Lloyd Webber's
43:23The Wizard of Oz
43:24that's kind of
43:26iconic
43:28you know
43:28he's playing
43:29a part
43:30in a show
43:30that
43:31he'd watched
43:32a thousand times
43:33on TV
43:34as kids
43:35I never thought
43:36I'd even be in a musical
43:37never mind
43:37being able to come here
43:38and mingle with
43:39stars that I've watched
43:40on stage for years
43:43it's the Vivian
43:46it's the Vivian
43:47the Wicked Witch
43:49of the World
43:50wow
43:50you look incredible
43:51thank you darling
43:52you nearly made me cry
43:54backstage
43:54and I can't cry
43:55because we all know
43:55if I get wet
43:56I melt
43:57yeah of course
43:58you know
43:58she's playing a role
43:59that was never done
44:00by anyone in drag
44:01before
44:02hey
44:04and like
44:05basically originating
44:06that part
44:07as a drag role
44:08and opening doors up
44:09for everyone
44:10so yeah
44:11let's go backstage
44:13a Zen pic queen
44:14you wish I was a Zen pic queen
44:16it's called
44:17hard work darling
44:19seven months of ice skating
44:20and living in the gym
44:21you should try it
44:26Vivian
44:26was the shit
44:28but she didn't walk around
44:29like she was the shit
44:29because the thing is
44:30in show business
44:31if you're good
44:32and you're talented
44:33you've got nothing to prove
44:35because the proof's
44:36in the pudding
44:37so much of Viv's life
44:39was based around
44:40wanting to be successful
44:43the really sad part
44:44about all of this
44:45is that
44:462025 was going to be
44:48amazing for Viv
44:57that Sunday
44:59was
45:00a really normal day
45:02and I think that's what
45:04in life frightens me
45:06so much now
45:10I was due to take the girls
45:11to see him that day
45:13for lunch
45:15so I'd gone out
45:16it snowed
45:17and my youngest
45:19never seen the snow
45:19so
45:20we went out
45:21and then
45:22I came back
45:23and I'd had
45:24a few missed calls
45:26and
45:28it was my brother's best friend
45:30and I thought
45:30that was
45:31out of the ordinary
45:35and then
45:36he said
45:37have you heard
45:39have you heard
45:41have you heard
45:42from James
45:48I drank Chanel
45:50before I drank
45:50the neighbour
45:52I think she sort of
45:54knew
45:54that something was wrong
45:56when I was ringing her
45:58and I was woken up
46:00by a text that said
46:01are your messages
46:02going through to Viv
46:03and I was like
46:04oh
46:05and so I
46:06called her best friend
46:09they went round
46:09to the house
46:11and
46:12that's when they found them
46:13and they called me
46:14instantly
46:15and they said
46:17Simon she's gone
46:19and I was in my kitchen
46:21with my husband
46:22and I just
46:23completely broke down
46:27got a phone call
46:28from Chanel
46:30and she just said
46:32James has gone
46:36and you just
46:37you will come
46:37crashing down
46:42so we drove
46:43to the house
46:48there was
46:50ambulance
46:51please
46:53and
46:54I just
46:55wanted to run
46:56straight up the stairs
46:59and we went in
47:02and he was
47:07he's just lying
47:15he's lying
47:16on the floor
47:22he just looked
47:23really peaceful
47:29every day after that
47:30it's just been
47:34not believing it
47:37plodding on day at a time
47:40it's a battle
47:42it's a real battle
47:50there was a very weird
47:52scenario to be in
47:53to be
47:54the person that needs
47:56to manage this
47:58to the outside world
47:59professionally
48:01the person that needs
48:02to tell her friends
48:05and
48:05losing at the same time
48:07someone that
48:08is literally
48:09your best friend
48:11and
48:13it was a really
48:14really tough day
48:17and it was really
48:18hard pressing
48:19like send on that
48:20statement
48:20because it was like
48:21I knew that
48:22everything was going to
48:23change from that
48:24moment
48:29and RuPaul's Drag Race
48:30star
48:31James Lee Williams
48:32better known as
48:33The Vivian
48:33has died at the age
48:3432
48:35publicist Simon Jones
48:37said the performer
48:38who died over the weekend
48:39the only feeling
48:40I can describe it
48:41is it feels like
48:42you've been hit by a train
48:42it's like
48:43boof
48:47everything was falling
48:49into place
48:50for this person
48:51everything
48:57police investigated
48:58the circumstances
48:59of the death
49:00of the 32 year old man
49:01and concluded
49:02there were no
49:03suspicious circumstances
49:07you're grieving
49:08for your loss
49:09of your friend
49:11you'll always be
49:11our queen
49:12you'll always be
49:13the UK's
49:14number one queen
49:15but then there's
49:16all these people
49:17that didn't know
49:17your friend
49:18that are also grieving
49:19and you can kind of
49:19feel that
49:21as you can see
49:22behind me
49:23and at the fabulous
49:24Empire Theatre
49:24there are buildings
49:26all across the city centre
49:27lit up in green
49:28in respect of
49:29James' favourite role
49:30playing the Wicked Witch
49:32thank you Liverpool
49:40sometimes
49:42life throws things
49:43at you
49:43that
49:45some people
49:47can do
49:47and some people
49:48can't do
49:49and some things
49:50take over
49:51people
49:51sometimes
49:57I knew about
49:59Viv's ketamine
50:00addiction
50:00you know
50:01Viv and I
50:02were so close
50:03she was completely
50:04open with me
50:04I didn't know
50:06until later
50:07with us working
50:08together
50:08that it had reared
50:10its head again
50:10there were times
50:11when it crept back in
50:12and there were times
50:14when it disappeared
50:14and I did everything
50:17that I could
50:18as a manager
50:20therapy
50:21counsellors
50:22whatever we could do
50:24when Viv needed
50:25that help
50:25we spoke very openly
50:27about it
50:31I don't know why
50:33she didn't mention it
50:33to me
50:35she didn't want
50:37that facade
50:38to come down
50:41the thing about
50:42addiction is
50:43no matter if you
50:44get clean
50:44and you stay clean
50:45you're still an addict
50:51I know this
50:52from people
50:54in my life
50:54that
50:56are addicts
50:59I
51:01really regret
51:03not pressing
51:03her on it
51:05and not asking
51:06her because
51:07I feel like
51:07we had
51:08a friendship
51:11an honest friendship
51:13enough to where
51:15I could ask her that
51:17and
51:19she could tell me
51:47as soon as
51:48I was aware
51:49that
51:49my brother
51:50had passed away
51:51as a result
51:52of ketamine
51:53I started to do
51:55some research
51:56and that's where
51:57I first
51:58sort of realised
51:59that ketamine
52:01currently sits
52:03as a class B drug
52:04so immediately
52:05I was like
52:07that can't be right
52:08and if it is right
52:09that needs to change
52:11I interviewed
52:12Chanel
52:12not that long
52:13after the 15 had died
52:15and gosh
52:16she was so
52:17incredibly brave
52:19the classification
52:20of the drug
52:21currently
52:21isn't in line
52:23with the risks
52:23that are associated
52:24and I'm fearful
52:26that especially
52:28the younger generation
52:29where it is more prevalent
52:30they feel that
52:31it's less harmful
52:33we need to make it
52:36extremely difficult
52:37you know
52:38for anyone
52:39that is looking
52:41to supply
52:42or is supplying
52:43ketamine
52:44because this is
52:45infiltrating
52:46our younger generation
52:47I was able
52:48to visit
52:50the House of Parliament
52:51and I went there
52:52to discuss
52:53the reclassification
52:55but also
52:56to discuss
52:57the issues
52:58around public health
52:59relating to
53:00the dangers
53:01associated with ketamine
53:03after using the drug
53:04we've had people
53:05come in
53:06that have been
53:06doubly incontinent
53:07frequently urinating
53:09the cramps
53:10but sometimes
53:10they're passing
53:12bladder mucus
53:13and frequently
53:15needing to urinate
53:16but urinating
53:17very little
53:17I think it would be
53:19an amazing legacy
53:20for the Vivian
53:22if this law
53:22was changed
53:25there's a big part
53:26of me
53:26that I couldn't
53:28help him
53:28so this is our way
53:30together
53:30of helping
53:31other people
53:36so we're
53:37our entrance

54:52being on this journey

54:54about yourself
54:55in and out of drag
54:59and I think
55:00out of drag
55:00I've learnt that
55:01I am
55:02quite a helpful person
55:04I like to look after people
55:08it's been
55:09an emotional rollercoaster
55:10and
55:11when you're in drag
55:12you're always
55:12hard
55:13and there's a wall up
55:14and the confidence
55:14has got to go through
55:17but it's really nice
55:18to just let that lie
55:19and show people
55:20that you are a real person
55:22and you're all that glamour
55:25we go through so much
55:27trauma
55:27throughout lives
55:29but to lose somebody
55:31so tragically
55:32so young
55:33we never expect it
55:36we are going to keep
55:38the Vivian's legacy alive
55:39without even realising
55:40if James could see
55:43the world's reaction
55:46I don't think he'd have believed it
