00:00Rick and Morty 2023 Issue 9
00:04It starts with a lot of panels that just waste the audience's time, and I say that because we already
00:09know what Vulture Person is all about doing, and the dialogue is kind of boring, too.
00:14Rick says bongs out of nowhere because he has a random sense of humor, and it was a bit cathartic
00:20that Thinkgiver got annoyed by it and made fun of the fact that he can't stand with that at a
00:24time like this.
00:26But then it goes back to being boring by having way too much dialogue I don't really care about with
00:32nothing happening.
00:34It was especially cool when Rick says he thinks he wins a little more if he kills a god today.
00:39Other than that, they waste my time talking when I'm wondering why they won't just fight each other.
00:45Rick didn't outsmart him so much as got lucky enough to get found by somebody who wanted to team up
00:51with him, so I think he knows he's lying and is fine with doing that to taunt him.
00:56It's explained that the other gods stopped causing trouble because they'd rather have even more entertainment without the work by
01:03watching Thinkgiver fight and betting on who wins.
01:07It humanizes them, and it's a creative twist.
01:11And it makes sense.
01:13It was cathartic when Thinkgiver got his face messed up and got upset about it.
01:18If he was upset enough and Vulture Person's magical enough, I can forgive the fact that we had no hint
01:23he could do this to him up to this point.
01:26And besides, usually modern comics have horrendous pacing, so it's better for the pirates to come out of nowhere than
01:33have a line boringly telling you about them first.
01:35At least in this comic, I wasn't made to think Vulture Person is usually incompetent, so it's not as surprising
01:42when he reveals he's actually more competent than I thought.
01:45After more boredom, the leader of the Mr. Goldenfold says this reality sucks and randomly decides to give up on
01:52conquering in favor of another one,
01:54which comes out of complete nowhere because he's been extremely confident so far in the same way as Rick.
02:01If the other Goldenfolds leave, that won't make any sense to me on its face because right now they're having
02:06fun watching the fight.
02:08And I don't know how he could possibly have sway over all of them.
02:13I would have to assume he bribed them off screen.
02:16And then it goes over to Auntie Hollow.
02:19It was a little cathartic to read that a giant ant tried to eat one of the bad guys with
02:24a screwdriver, but that would have been better to actually see.
02:28I liked the panel telling me that Noelle and the people she used to be around got hatched from eggs
02:33as turtles because it feels a little creative.
02:36The eggs are creative looking.
02:38Then it gets boring again as a recap starts happening.
02:42The next page puts me through way too many panels of Noelle being depressing because her complete despair at the
02:48situation puts her in a bad mood,
02:50and Morty's just making her feel worse by doubting something she believes out of social inepness and trying to cheer
02:55her up badly.
02:56I guess their interaction is justified logically because it's the natural result of two people with Morty's personality being stuck
03:03in a bad situation together.
03:04And there's no indication that Noelle's parallel to Rick is nice to her in any way, so she would be
03:14more pessimistic than Morty.
03:16It doesn't stop it from being tedious drama that goes on too long.
03:20It could have easily stopped being tedious a lot faster if Morty said that Rick's rescued him a lot and
03:27shown that he cared about him a lot, and so will probably save them.
03:31To be fair, it's nice that she said she hopes they can recapture that honeymoon phase, so it could be
03:36a lot worse.
03:37And the worst of it was over in two panels.
03:40She explains that the way she got out the first time was by worshipping an ex-god, so because she
03:45used to be one, Morty worships her.
03:48And since it's working, because this is a ridiculous magical dimension, it's frustrating that she keeps complaining about it,
03:55as if she's somehow under the impression that he's not just going to act like this until the moment they
04:00escape.
04:02Finally, she starts smiling, and they hold hands.
04:05She gets some power back, and I hate looking at how she's drawn because of it.
04:11They get scolded by someone who talks weird for eating some beans because apparently they were gods too, which is
04:17also creative.
04:19Then it goes back to the excessive, boring dialogue that tries to ruin the fight scene.
04:25Vulture person spits out Rick, and eventually Rick ends up in his eye, and the story starts wasting my time
04:30for too long again.
04:32Rick doesn't care about how he's getting taunted, so it doesn't matter anyway.
04:37And neither does anything that happened in his eye, because he ends up outside of it and gets threatened by
04:42Jerry.
04:43At least that makes sense, but it should have happened a lot faster.
04:47There's nothing worth reading until all of a sudden, Thankgiver gets scolded with the nickname,
04:52and talked to in a boringly formal, long-winded way by his aunt, the ruler of Auntie Hola.
04:58I love that they made a pun off Auntie Hola by calling her Auntie Hola.
05:03The story needed something to lighten it up.
05:06Since they already know each other, I can't take it seriously that she's taking so long telling him who she
05:11is anyways,
05:12because apparently she's just that arrogant.
05:16Noelle jumps out of a portal with a sword, and it's satisfying because she's in a good mood again.
05:21I wish the dialogue that Noelle had been listening to last time we saw her had been replaced with whatever
05:27they would have said to each other for things to get to this point.
05:30It's better pacing to skip straight to her being back here, but not as satisfying as it would have been
05:35if we got to see their point of view as it got to escape.
05:39We could have seen how they earned escaping without seeing a single extra panel.
05:45For once I'm not as bored by the dialogue, because he's giving the bad guy what he deserves.
05:49And it's a nice surprise that the writer had the guts to take him down a peg like this.
05:53Mordy saves Rick, and I'm left just wondering how, because I didn't get to see it, so I just have
05:58to assume his punches were so painful they made Jerry let him go.
06:03I've got no idea why a vulture person would defend someone who just strangled him.
06:08Surprisingly, he's comforted by Auntie Hala because she feels sorry for him for being hungry without any godsouls to raid.
06:15So that's why he collects them.
06:17That makes more sense than him just collecting something as weird as that for the sake of it.
06:21He's just this magic monster that magically feeds off of warping souls somewhere.
06:26The next panel's gross, but at least the Deus Ex Machina lady was happy.
06:32She says what she plans on doing, which is redundant since she repeats herself in a differently phrased way a
06:37panel later.
06:39It turns out she can collect souls too, which is supposed to be vulture person's entire purpose.
06:46But it was cathartic to see Think ever get humiliated by being made to talk and look like a little
06:52kid version of himself with a ridiculous costume.
06:56I didn't expect that either.
06:57There's a lot of creative effort in this story when I'm used to almost nothing at all for Mighty W
07:02Sonic.
07:04It is a little anticlimactic that the person who defeats Think Giver wasn't any of the main characters though.
07:11But they're indirectly responsible for it.
07:15There's more bad dialogue until Think Giver is told he'll get punished when he gets home.
07:20Someone tells Auntie Hollow to stop, and surprisingly she actually does despite her being immortal.
07:28So she's nice enough to not think she's super better than them.
07:33The idiots on Earth beg to keep him because he told them things off screen, including teaching someone how to
07:39gamble.
07:40The vulture person actually turns out to be such a nice guy that he suggests letting the person who strangled
07:46him stay here on Earth for such a flimsy reason.
07:49And yet he's also gotta be a monster because he sees nothing wrong with the idea that in a couple
07:53centuries war will get fought with Think Giver as an excuse.
07:58And I guess she agrees to it because she likes him that much.
08:02She makes Think Giver look even cuter as a punishment, and it's cathartic that he hates it, but why doesn't
08:09she brainwash him into being a good person while she's at it since she's already fine with shapeshifting him against
08:14his will, and that would prevent him from doing something evil here.
08:19Noelle gets to get back at Rick by stupidly taunting him for losing to Think Giver even though she might
08:24get made to regret it later, and it was nice of Morty to help Rick walk away.
08:28But usually Rick's able to heal extremely fast because of nanobots in his body.
08:34I got reminded of how fast he could heal from the first episode of Season 9, so this doesn't make
08:39sense either.
08:40I guess it does if the nanobots ran out of energy to heal him by now.
08:45I get to see Vulture Person taunt Think Giver some more, and wonder why somebody thinks he's cool when he's
08:51giggling at him.
08:53I see Morty walking alone, and then all of a sudden Noelle explains that she's breaking up with him because
08:58she doesn't want to be wrapped up in any more terrible adventures than the ones she already has to deal
09:03with since, apparently she's back with her uncle on the next page when he could've replaced her with a clone
09:09if she just didn't come back to him like an idiot.
09:13So that was needlessly dragged out depressing, but I'm thankful it didn't last a lot longer.
09:19Eventually Rick gets so upset about the fact that he lost that he plans on making his own world where
09:25Rick wins, and we find out that Think Giver wants to do the same thing.
09:30And they're all gonna go to the same planet called the Great Earth.
09:34I sure hope there's a good excuse for why they all decided to pick this planet, because that's extremely unlikely,
09:42since there's infinite universes and planets.
09:46Well that was a lot better than I expected, because there were a lot of new ideas and pleasant surprises
09:51in it, but it was still mostly a boring story because of all the excessive boring dialogue and slow pacing,
09:58so it didn't get good until we got to see Think Giver get humiliated.
10:03This story by Alex F. was about Think Giver and Vulture person fighting until the fight gets made to stop
10:10because Auntie Hala got told about what happened off screen by Noelle or Morty, and she sent all of the
10:17gods back to Auntie Hala.
10:19And of course a predictable happens because Noelle breaks up with Morty because she blames her attachment to him for
10:25getting sent to God Hell the second time.
10:28It looks realistic, but she's already going on adventures with her uncle willingly, so it's a flimsy excuse that doesn't
10:35supersede doing something fun.
10:37It was nice to see Morty be made happy because of her.
10:40I stopped watching The Suite Life on Deck because a couple I liked was forced to break up because of
10:46such a stupid reason considering they got along so well before.
10:53The characters weren't that hot-headed before.
10:57So I know you can lose fans by writing like that when even teenagers who aren't trying to analyze a
11:02story can instantly notice the drama being forced.
11:05I shouldn't even get to explain that if most people thought good relationships were too boring, Monica and Chandler and
11:12Bunny and Antoine wouldn't be popular couples.
11:16I think Monica and Chandler might have been even more popular than Ross and Rachel.
11:21But this comic has a premise that's way more interesting than The Suite Life on Deck because it's sci-fi,
11:26so there's a lot more creative potential there.
11:28So it's not really something whose appeal can be ruined by a breakup that might just be temporary.
11:33So next slide is please.
11:34I will put you that back in the right Chloe.
11:34free.
