00:00Knuckles episode 3. It turns out the cliffhanger ending lied because Wade's mom didn't faint right
00:07away upon seeing him again. Instead of getting to see her happily greet him. A female FBI agent ends
00:15up talking to him from right behind her in the tediously bicker for a while without it being
00:20explained right away who she actually is. So that's all I'm wondering about the whole time.
00:27Somehow the mom waits until after Knuckles politely greeted her to faint. I wouldn't expect him to be
00:35respectful of her calling her a matriarch. He comes from an ancient warrior tribe based on Aztecs or
00:43whatever. It's a nice surprise but it's confusing. It only makes sense because he's from an alien world
00:51so anything goes. It's just that there was no indication that there was any matriarch concept
00:59based on the only thing that his tribe was based on. And surprisingly the very next scene has her
01:06talking politely to him and being apologetic that she wasn't nice right away. Lazily skipping over the
01:14interesting part which was him convincing her to be like this in the first place. After a lot of
01:22blatant wasting of my time Wade remembers being fought with and says that every family dinner around
01:29this time of year has been a disaster. Which makes his mom look like a massive idiot for insisting on
01:36there always being a family dinner. Just because of tradition. We didn't need to see the flashback
01:43outright. We already hated her. And we don't hate Wade. When Knuckles said he thought his mom was a weakling
01:51at first I thought it'd have consequences. But thankfully she didn't mind and the same can be said
01:57about him saying that her arms were muscular as a compliment. It's nice that the writer avoided
02:03writing some drama. It's weird to see his sister act like a little kid to him dropping the spoon to
02:10taunt him. I get that siblings still act like their kids around each other sometimes but this is at such
02:16an exaggerated level that she's weird. It's good for making her stand out as a character but it seems
02:24like a miracle she got her job. The only reason her wacky behavior is even slightly defensible
02:31is that she's Wade's sibling so they're both wacky of course. And maybe they get it from their dad.
02:40I don't know why she said Knuckles is wild. All he did was compliment the food. He's only wild looking
02:49but they're already happily sitting there accepting someone who's not family being a part of their
02:54family dinner so they should be past that. Surprisingly she didn't know about gun and says
03:01that's the fakest name she ever heard after laughing at it. While it's realistic it's the opposite of fan
03:08service. After more blatant padding where it was especially boring when they started talking about
03:15an imaginary gym gun agent. Surprisingly it's the mom who causes the dinner to start falling apart
03:23because she calls out the sister on being skeptical and she makes her yell at her which ends up leading
03:29to them briefly hitting each other. And then the mom threatens them with krav maga to get things to
03:35calm down. Getting a compliment for training some warriors. Never mind she starts talking aggressively
03:42anyway. Surprisingly the sister ends up stabbing Wade with a fork on screen. And it also spends several
03:51seconds with him shouting and complaining about it. I get that Wade's the comedy character that bad
03:59things happen to. So that's why they're doing this. And maybe there's a bias against showing slapstick
04:06to women. So that's why they don't give any slapstick to her. I wouldn't have improved a bit either way
04:14but
04:14wouldn't it make more sense for her to fall down? I have to resist the urge to call it bad
04:21just for
04:22being dark and one of the darkest things that ever happened in Sonic. I think the real problem is
04:28it's Wade. And it's not like it serves any narrative purpose. Because after this they pretend that never
04:37happened. It doesn't affect the plot at all so it's just there for shock value. But it's not bad just
04:44because it's a weirdly dark tone. Of course it's tone whiplash compared to how the show was before.
04:51So that makes it confusing that they thought writing this was acceptable. But there's been pretty
04:57serious stuff happening in Sonic stories since the beginning. Unless you think Labyrinth Zone getting
05:04polluted for no reason. And animals being forced to power killing machines isn't serious. And this show
05:12wasn't free of drama before this point. Knuckles goes up to Wade asking if he's injured sounding worried
05:19about him. Which makes it confusing that he says he thought he heard someone crying like a baby.
05:25Why would he insult him if he wants to reassure him? They don't even want to own up to it.
05:31They just
05:31immediately go back to comedy. He gets into a small conversation with Wade that cheers him up.
05:39And then he just complains that his father abandoned him again. But he didn't have to say that. If you
05:47keep
05:47repeating exposition over and over it loses its emotional impact. And this already started to
05:52get a little annoying after the last time. The writer should have just kept it to a minimum instead
05:57of acting like the audience would forget about this if we don't hear about it in every episode.
06:03This should have been the first time he mentioned it. Because it makes sense. At the family dinner.
06:11It wastes my time for a while. At least I liked how he interacted with Knuckles when it came to
06:17music.
06:18I always liked that Knuckles is new to technology like a caveman in the movies. Even though I never
06:23stopped noticing that he's not like this in the games. Because that's how he logically was at the
06:28start of the games universe. And we just didn't find out about that because he didn't get to talk.
06:35Even though Knuckles presumably went to the surface for the first time in Sonic Adventure. We never saw
06:42him really react to the technology in Station Square. When Knuckles talks about when he got lost after
06:51wandering away from his tribe. Wade's mom tries to one-up him about the bad experience by saying that
06:58her ancestors were forced into being a wandering tribe as a whole. Even though it was a long time
07:05before this point. And that's all she mentions when it comes to suffering. I sort of like that
07:11because they actually took advantage of that part of her identity by tying into it instead of doing
07:17nothing with it besides aesthetics. And it's not so bad that she was rude because she says sorry right
07:23afterwards and he doesn't mind. But of course she still shouldn't have been rude in the first place.
07:29He lost his father and everyone he held dear. And had to spend the rest of his childhood
07:37alone. She never went through anything like that. Eventually Wade goes right behind someone who broke
07:45into his house and whispers which he should have heard and responded with attacking him because of.
07:51So even he would know better. And he attacks him which logically should have actually done something.
07:59I get him not throwing something even more dangerous at him because then he would get in trouble
08:05if he didn't hold back. But I hate having to assume that someone had rings for the plot to progress.
08:13He ends up saved by Knuckles. And another bad guy ends up threatening Wade's sister with a chain.
08:20And again she's surprisingly weird because she's not intimidated for even a second.
08:27So I was like why is she treating him like Wade when she just met him? Shouldn't she be scared
08:34because
08:34she doesn't have a gun? It's moments like this that make it a problem that Wade's so forgettable
08:40looking because he's just another brown haired guy. Because this guy is the same color hair and skin as
08:47Wade so it's easy for me to forget what Wade looks like. Maybe it's because I don't get enough sleep.
08:54So it's actually cool that she told him that he just broke into a house full of cops and pretty
08:59soon
08:59or regret it. Now it's pleasantly surprised that the mom was actually expecting the criminals because
09:07there's way too many times in stories where the characters didn't hear something they should have
09:12just because they're off screen. But here she already knew he was here because she could hear all the
09:18commotion the break-in caused from another room. It's also a nice surprise that she's actually brave about
09:24this. But she's used to dealing with conflict because her kids were always fighting. Not like
09:30that's on the same level. And she's got knuckles to protect her. Still feels a little ironic because
09:37usually burglars breaking into her house is a very dark thing. And the burglars were taken completely
09:44seriously when it comes to their personalities. And then all of a sudden the story remembers they're
09:50actually not a threat. It was nice to see the fight scene. But it was the music that did all
09:56the
09:56heavy lifting. Because again it's not like it shows the bad guys get hit a lot. You could have had
10:03them
10:03with armor on. There wasn't really any catharsis against them for me. It's completely forgettable as a
10:10fight scene. So the only thing it does really well aside from the music is the way it has the
10:15camera move.
10:17And this obviously should have been most of the story. They could have used the budget
10:22more on this stuff and less on other stuff to afford more fight scenes. It was nice to see the
10:29family be in a good mood after that because they all fought them off together. So we're supposed to
10:35believe that that makes up for the terrible family dinner. Good I guess. And the story just ends there.
10:43That's nice but I still don't like his sister just because she joined in on a fight that Knuckles
10:48could have won single-handedly. She's just a stereotypical bitchy sibling rivalry obsessed
10:55sibling. That's not impressive enough to earn me calling her by her name. Because she's just
11:01playing into a lazy sexist way of writing. Because she's a federal agent but she's just as tomboyish
11:08someone who doesn't think a woman should have that job would expect her to be. I saw a potential
11:14pretty quick. She could have been cool if she was useful a lot but she never backs up her tough
11:20girl
11:21attitude after this. It sure would suck if she was never rinse and apologized for hurting him with a fork.
11:29This episode was by John Whittington. I didn't think they'd waste the whole plot on Knuckles having
11:36dinner at Wade's mom's house. The plot didn't progress at all. Most of the story was a boring waste
11:43of time. The only really good scene is the fight with the bad guys at the end who once again
11:50are so
11:50personalityless they don't even deserve to be named. There's barely anything good about the story
11:57other than that that's major. One of those things is that it's unusually lucky and sweet it was of
12:03Wade's family to immediately adjust to Knuckles being there and go back to acting natural around him.
12:09It felt convenient but I looked past it because it made for a better story and was still believable
12:15because Wade's so weird that it makes sense that his family would be weird instead of freaking out and
12:20being intimidated of an alien the whole evening. Especially with how weird his sister is too.
12:27So come to think of it another thing great about the episode is that it didn't do what Sonic X
12:31did
12:31when Chris's family threw a dinner party. Maybe the writer wanted to be creative instead because
12:37Wade was smart enough not to have Knuckles try to hide from the family the whole time. Which would have
12:42had the story constantly contrived ways for him to almost reveal that he's there until he would.
12:47The cliche way to have a story like this. It's lucky that Wade knew better after being a clumsy dork
12:53the
12:53whole show to the point where having Knuckles high would be the kind of harebrained idea he'd come up
12:58with. I have to guess this is because the failure of his original rescue plan made him less optimistic
13:05than he's supposed to be for a while. So he figured they'd find out about Knuckles anyways so it's better
13:10to be honest
13:11from the start to avoid the backlash from lying about him.
13:14The other questions we have come up on a wall.
