00:00Meanwhile, in Major League Baseball, one of the primary matchups of the night includes one of the favorites to win
00:06the National League, Cy Young.
00:07That's Jacob Mizorowski pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers.
00:11Is this a playoff preview? Possibly.
00:13It's June, so we certainly don't know exactly.
00:16But as you can see, Joe, Milwaukee is just a huge favorite tonight at home, minus 235.
00:22The total is seven and a half.
00:24And the reason why this line is what it is isn't so much even as Mizorowski.
00:27It's the fact that the Phillies have a big problem in their rotation.
00:31Andrew Painter has been the one guy every five days.
00:35I know eventually, Joe, he's going to be a great pitcher in the big leagues, but he's the one guy
00:38right now that's struggling to get outs.
00:41Yeah, it has not been good, but the bats have been good for the Phillies here.
00:46And listen, they're going to give they're going to give a miss, I think, a run for his money.
00:49But you nailed it, Craig. I mean, minus 250. Stop it.
00:53You know, the Phillies aren't going away anytime.
00:56They've got a ton of experience in that lineup there.
00:59I do think and they've been playing really, really well, swinging the bat much better.
01:04And anytime you got figures that you need a Yankee in order to actually turn the Phillies around.
01:09Mattingly has done an amazing job since getting the getting the call there.
01:13And I think they're going to give his this has got run line written all over it to me.
01:19I'll take the run and a half. I'll take the Phillies lineup because at some point he's going to have
01:24to come out.
01:24That bullpen is going to have to come in here.
01:26And as long as they can limit the damage somewhat here, I think the Phillies are alive in this one.
01:33The Braves take on the Mets.
01:35One team going one way and the other going another.
01:38That's been the story all season long.
01:39Mets started to play a little bit better, by the way, but really not making a ton of progress in
01:43the standings.
01:44Spencer Strider starts for Atlanta.
01:47When the Mets win, it's usually this guy pitching.
01:50And that's Nolan McClain.
01:52He starts tonight.
01:53But as you can see, the Braves are just super tough.
01:55So you can't make New York that big.
01:56The favorite total, eight and a half tonight at Citi Field.
02:01You know, they waited so long to call that game last night in Chicago with the White Sox,
02:07who are about to sweep the Braves, if you can believe that.
02:10But they waited a long time for that.
02:13Chicago now has to fly out west to begin a West Coast series there.
02:17And Atlanta had to leave late to go play the Mets here today.
02:22I think the Braves are certainly going to benefit from not having to play.
02:26Because it was getting a little rough there in Chicago.
02:29But I think they can exhale.
02:31They've done a great job of handling the Mets.
02:34Although McClain has bounced back.
02:35He had a couple of rough starts there to end the month in May.
02:39Nice start his last time out, although against the Padres, I don't think the Mets won.
02:43There's a shocker.
02:44But I think the Braves, at this price, certainly worth taking a look at here tonight at Citi Field.
02:51And welcome back to the early line here on Sports Grid.
02:55Major League Baseball, get ready for another big weekend of games.
02:59And Joe and I are going to chop it up with some of the different topics that are going on,
03:02including the Boston Red Sox, whose season is effectively over.
03:06It's very hard to be 12 games under .500 looking as bad as the Red Sox do offensively.
03:12They just can't score runs.
03:14The president of the club this week, Sam Kennedy, said that the Red Sox season is embarrassing and unacceptable.
03:21They already fired their manager, Alex Cora, thinking there would be some sort of turnaround from there.
03:27But it felt like a strange offseason, Joe, for them.
03:30And look, I know that they're pointing a lot to not signing Alex Bregman, and that's why things fell apart.
03:35But honestly, I think it's just so much more deeper than that.
03:39And the club's offense is just not built to win right now.
03:42I know they thought that, but scoring two runs a game isn't going to beat anybody.
03:47Yeah, again, you know, you've got there's I think a little bit of egos going on there in that building
03:54there.
03:55I think Alex Cora might have seen the writing on the wall and might have been like, this is not
04:00a team.
04:01They're not a very experienced.
04:03There's only a handful of veterans on that team.
04:05It's one thing if you're going to fire the manager in Philadelphia, right, and make a change with a team
04:11that has been there and done this before.
04:14Man, there's a lot of young guys, a lot of new guys in Boston that really haven't quite figured it
04:20out to begin with.
04:21It just felt so odd.
04:23And usually where there's smoke, there's fire.
04:25And now Boston's going from, OK, we're going to win the American League East to now they might be sellers
04:31at the deadline.
04:32Craig, is that what we're looking at here?
04:34Not might be will be.
04:36I mean, the team can't play.
04:37I mean, and not only that, I mean, I like Ranger Suarez and he's having a good season.
04:41But now, you know, what was the point of all that?
04:44You're sitting on $200 million of a pitcher on a losing team.
04:48Maybe a role as Chapman could be a chip for them to trade.
04:53Chapman, I mean, for the last few years, once again, has been one of the very best relievers in Major
04:56League Baseball.
04:57But you may remember back in 2022, and I know it was a while ago, but Chapman was struggling at
05:01the end of that season.
05:03And the Yankees decided not to put him on the playoff roster.
05:06And Chapman essentially saying he doesn't want to go back to New York unless he gets an apology from Brian
05:11Cashman.
05:12But I don't know, Joe, that Chapman's going to have to worry about that.
05:16Because I don't ever remember a scenario where the Red Sox helped the Yankees win the postseason.
05:22Or the Yankees, you know, it's not going to happen.
05:25I don't think a trade like this would happen.
05:27I don't think he has to worry about it.
05:29Yeah, first of all, it's I'm fairly certain Cashman's not worried about having to apologize.
05:35So because he would never pull the trigger on it to begin with.
05:39Anyway, the Yankees have some issues, but it has nothing to do with needing a Chapman right now or that
05:45kind of drama.
05:47Yeah, Yankees have some other directions to go, but it's nice of him to bring it up.
05:52But it ain't going to Yankees are not getting help from the Red Sox.
05:56You're absolutely correct.
05:58Yeah, even if the trade matches up, these two teams rarely, rarely make trades.
06:03And when they do, it's in the offseason and it's minor league players or something like that.
06:07All right, Rangers, Red Sox, let's get to this tonight.
06:10One of the fascinating things that I keep seeing in the betting market, Joe, is the fact that somehow with
06:16the Red Sox losing every single night,
06:19the amount of money that's got to be made betting against them has got to be number one in baseball
06:23this season.
06:24Because the oddsmakers still don't make them a huge dog.
06:27In fact, they're pretty much favorites like every night.
06:30I don't understand this, Joe.
06:31It makes no sense to me.
06:32I was talking about this on Newswire.
06:33And once again tonight, they're minus 126.
06:36How could you possibly back Boston watching what they're doing?
06:40I have no idea.
06:42I mean, because you've got also two teams currently heading in different directions, right?
06:46I mean, Boston is struck.
06:47They can't hit water if they fell out of a boat.
06:50And yet the Rangers finally got a little healthier.
06:52And now they're starting to hit the ball.
06:55And, yeah, now the Rangers look like, yeah, what are they at, 500 for the first time, I feel like,
07:01in forever.
07:02So, yeah, I kind of like that.
07:04I'm with you.
07:04I like the Rangers here.
07:06But Sonny Gray's had an amazing season thus far.
07:08I'll give him credit.
07:10It seems to be he's the only guy that seems to be able to win games when he starts for
07:14the Red Sox.
07:16So, Leiter's actually been good, too.
07:18So, I kind of still think that you've got two teams, different directions.
07:23I think Texas is pretty good value on the board here tonight.
07:28Dodgers yesterday, a couple of injuries.
07:30One that's potentially serious.
07:32The other one, we're not so sure.
07:34But let's touch on the first.
07:35And this is Will Smith heading to the injured list.
07:39Of course, the Dodgers could afford to have anybody hurt because they just plug and play guys like nobody's business
07:44on every team.
07:45And so, in this case, I'm assuming Dalton Rushing is the catcher until Will Smith comes back, Joe.
07:50But Smith is arguably one of baseball's best catchers.
07:54But it's a minimum IL stint, it looks like.
07:59So, June 23rd could have him back.
08:02Yes.
08:04They'll have to weather the storm here, right?
08:06I mean, we learned of Otani taking a seat there yesterday, halfway through the game.
08:12Now, Will Smith.
08:13But like you said, it's the other thing this Dodgers team has is plenty enough depth to be able to
08:18withstand these kinds of stretches in this season here.
08:22They're already, what, 46 and 25.
08:25I think they'll be just fine.
08:27And you've got to love it because all these reinforcements will be back in another month or so.
08:34So, as the season moves on, the Dodgers will actually get healthier.
08:38They have more than enough to be able to weather this.
08:41Meanwhile, as we mentioned, Otani left the game yesterday with a knee issue.
08:46It looks like he'll be able to be back in the lineup.
08:49So, that's good news if Dave Roberts is saying that.
08:51Let's hear from him after the game last night.
08:53So, hey, we saw that he left the game with knee inflammation.
08:57How is he feeling and just what is your level of concern with that?
09:01Not high.
09:02I think that we tried to be smart about it and, you know, talked to the trainer and said he
09:07had a little behind the knee and behind the knee, a little hamstring.
09:11So, just wanted to be smart and not push it.
09:15So, I feel good about him being in there tomorrow.
09:18But obviously, with the travel tonight, we'll just kind of see how he comes in.
09:23So, we'll see if Otani's in the lineup.
09:25If you're interested in betting in that market on the Dodgers, make sure you check your lineups in a few
09:30hours from now.
09:32Finally, how about this story here in San Diego?
09:35Manny Machado, who is maybe a future Hall of Famer, Joe, I think most people would agree, may not be
09:42if this is the end for his career.
09:44I mean, because what's funny about guys at the end of their careers, Joe, is that even if they don't
09:48hit great, they just have those counting stats.
09:50You know, they play out their careers, they hit a few bombs, they add to their numbers.
09:54But there's no adding to your numbers when you're hitting 172 on the season.
09:59Machado has been working with Aaron Judge's hitting coach, and it didn't work.
10:04And so, there's no excuses, and basically said that the hitting coach work is not the reason for his struggles.
10:12It's just him.
10:15Well, it's, you know, he's at that point in his career, right, where he realizes it looks, it might as
10:20well be throwing a golf ball at him right now.
10:24Because it just, he's not seeing it well at all.
10:28And you know what happens, Craig, with guys like this.
10:30It starts to be above the shoulders.
10:33Not that he doesn't have the ability, but all of a sudden, man, it's just as the season rolls on,
10:39and now he's going up there thinking he can't hit.
10:43It doesn't get good.
10:44But you know what?
10:45Hitting is contagious.
10:46And I couldn't figure out what was going on with Tatis either.
10:49There's no reason for him to have been as bad as he's been.
10:53And so, hopefully, if one guy turns it around, maybe that'll spark here and get Machado going in the right
10:58direction.
10:59And Juan Soto thinks that fans can get motivated by the Knicks.
11:05Check this out.
11:06I know you were at the Knicks game the other night.
11:08When you see, you know, how the city has rallied around a team like that, how much, if any, added
11:13motivation does that give you guys to get to that spot?
11:16I mean, when you see the fans and how they get crazy like that, you know, it's always motivating you
11:21to be at the top.
11:23But definitely, like you said, it's impressive.
11:27It's motivating, you know.
11:29I would love to, all my teammates, to get to see how it was Madison Square Garden on those finals
11:36games.
11:37And it was really cool to see how the fans, how they react.
11:41Yeah, I'm not going to be critical at all of that comment from Soto, regardless of what he said, Joe,
11:46because he's only answering a question that was asked of him, right?
11:50Like, that never comes up if that question isn't asked.
11:53So, I'm not concerned that, you know, listen, if the Mets can take motivation from anything this season, they got
12:01to take it.
12:01And so, if the Knicks winning does it, good for them.
12:04We'll be back with more of the early line right now.
12:06But again, they haven't won yet.
12:07And we just wait until they win, please.
12:09That's true, please.
12:13All right, Joe, no lineups out here.
12:15It's still too early for the Braves and Mets to figure out who's going to be in there.
12:18So, to me, it's always dangerous here.
12:19But you like the first five in a game today.
12:22Who do you like?
12:23Yeah, and me, I'm going to go if I'm going to get, what is it, McLean, is it Perez, is
12:31it Strider, who is it?
12:32Bottom line is, I like McLean.
12:35I think he turned a corner.
12:36He had a rough patch, a couple of bad outings over the last month.
12:40But I really did like, and I think it was all mechanical there, but I really do like what I
12:45saw from him last outing against the Padres.
12:48And the Braves, Noah Kuna, he's on the shelf.
12:51Call me crazy.
12:52I think runs are going to be harder to come by here today.
12:55I don't care who's starting for the Braves.
12:57It's going to be a first five under, four and a half for me, Craig.
13:00All right, and I'll go with a baseball game in San Francisco.
13:04The Giants did end up scoring 10 runs in a single inning to come back and win their game with
13:10a walk-off to win it.
13:12But they can't score runs, and neither can the Cubs.
13:14So, we'll go under eight runs.
13:16Cubs versus Giants for our best bet of the day.
13:22We have Prediction Markets Edge coming up next.
13:24So, make sure you stick around with us here on Sports Grid.
13:28Don't go away.
13:28This would be for the division, or at the very least, the wild card, Joe.
13:33But it's just a matter of which direction these two teams are headed.
13:37The Braves are headed toward the postseason.
13:39The Mets are headed toward golf season.
13:4150% of the tickets, though, on tonight's game are on the Mets, and 50% are on the Braves.
13:48So, it certainly seems like this could be a fun game tonight.
13:52The question is, does Nolan McClain show up?
13:55And if so, how deep does he go in this game to keep them alive?
14:00That is a good question.
14:02And I think he's going to be fine, Craig.
14:04I mean, outside of a couple of bad starts here where we were scratching our heads out on the West
14:10Coast,
14:11there, like, what is going on with him?
14:13I think he has found it.
14:15He's figured it out mechanically.
14:16He's got better swing and miss stuff than most.
14:20So, and I also think Atlanta kind of going through it a little bit.
14:24No, I mean, they lost two straight against the White Sox.
14:27Their game last night was rained out.
14:29But no Acuna now in this spot here.
14:33And, yeah, I kind of think both Strider and McClain have an opportunity to miss a few bats here.
14:39And maybe, just maybe, keep the run production down at Citi Field here tonight.
14:45Jacob Mizorowski pitches for the Brewers tonight.
14:47When he's on the mound, they generally win.
14:50And so, right now, 60% over on Calshi is on the tickets for the Brewers here.
14:5731% on the Philadelphia Phillies.
15:00Phillies are a really good team, Joe.
15:02I liked your take earlier on this one as far as the run scored in this game.
15:06Maybe they get to the Miz a little bit.
15:07Mitch Schwarber has been hot.
15:08But the problem is, for the Phillies, every five days, Andrew Painter is out there.
15:13And while he's one of their top prospects, and I think eventually he'll be a good pitcher,
15:17he just unfortunately is not getting a lot of outs right now.
15:21Yeah, and he's also not getting, you know, he's had some unfortunate luck here with batted
15:26balls over a couple of starts.
15:28So, his numbers are a little bit inflated.
15:31But the good news for Philadelphia is that the bats are hot.
15:36They weren't very good hitting on the road prior to the last couple of weeks.
15:41But they seem to have righted that ship here a little bit.
15:44And their bullpen has actually been pretty decent since over the last month.
15:49So, you know, the bottom line is, if Miz doesn't go seven, eight innings, you know,
15:54the bullpen has got to get involved here.
15:56And I think the bats are just hot enough for Philadelphia to make things interesting here.
16:01I'm expecting Painter to be better than what he has been.
16:04I don't necessarily trust the Brewers offense that just spent a couple of days in Vegas
16:10playing at a AAA ballpark that was kind of hilarious there.
16:14I think they're live here in this one, especially at this price.
16:18I mean, my goodness.
16:20Prediction Markets Edge here on Sports Grid.
16:23Always great to catch up with Tom Vecchio, who joins us now, along with Joe Ranieri,
16:27to go over some of the Prediction Markets odds and ideas and concepts.
16:33Tom, thanks for coming on the show.
16:35Really appreciate it.
16:36Let's get started and talk some all-star selections here.
16:41I mean, in the American League, there's a lot of different directions that you can go.
16:45And it has not been a great year, by the way, for the American League in general.
16:48Not a lot of teams playing great baseball.
16:50Bats and offense are down.
16:53Pitching is up.
16:54Is there anything that has piqued your interest here from the American League All-Stars here?
16:58And this is on Kalshi.
17:00Yeah, there's a lot of players that I would like to buy into.
17:04You know, Murakami, if he were to stay healthy, I think he'd be a really interesting option.
17:08I want to go a little bit off the board here with Dylan Dingler for the Detroit Tigers.
17:13He has been absolutely awesome behind the play.
17:16Also bringing a ton of offense, which we really haven't expected.
17:20And just where the position of catcher sits overall, not just this year, but generally.
17:25It's generally one of the weaker positions.
17:26So getting a player that I'm going to say is doing his part to help stabilize the Tigers' rotation,
17:32which has been all over the place, obviously dealing with the injuries.
17:35But a lot of offense from him, which is rather surprising.
17:37He deserves a nod.
17:41Yeah, the National League is interesting, too, here, Tom, because I'm looking at some
17:46of these prices, and health is an interesting aspect, right?
17:50But Acuna Jr. at 50 cents, right, hanging in there.
17:54I always like to look at the terrible teams because, you know, somebody's got to make it
17:58to the team, right?
17:59So, I mean, what's the best of the rest here in some of these?
18:03Where's some of the value in the National League here in these markets?
18:07You know, that's a great question of where we're going to be looking because we do know
18:11that, you know, players from each team will be going there.
18:15You know, Cooney not being healthy.
18:16We could look to Michael Harris, who's having a resurgent season.
18:19You know, Matt Olsen started up the season incredibly strong.
18:22He's kind of cooled off a little bit since then.
18:24You know, everyone's going to be looking at Skeens and Chris Sanchez and all these options.
18:28You know, Craig, I want to go with you.
18:29I want to go with another guy.
18:30Liam Hicks has been great, right?
18:32And we're talking about a position that, again, doesn't get a ton of production normally.
18:38I know he's batting DH in a lot of circumstances, but between him, between Ana Lopez, and between
18:43Xavier Edwards for the Marlins, I think they've all been fantastic this year.
18:46We're seeing plenty of production on the top of the lineup from them.
18:49You know, when it comes to the Giants, we want to look a little bit off the board.
18:53Matt Chapman has had quite a resurgence.
18:55I don't think it'll end up being him, but he still deserves a little bit of consideration.
18:58Jung-ho Lee is on a, what, 15, 16-game heading streak after he came back from an injury.
19:03We've got to look off the board at some of those options.
19:06Let's take a look at the home run derby here.
19:09Now, last year, I felt like Junior Caminero had a great shot to win, and so I do think
19:15there's a great shot that he is back in this year, but it still remains to be seen.
19:19The one intriguing name here, Tom, is Mike Trout.
19:24Now, people may wonder and say, why would Mike Trout do the home run derby?
19:27Well, the reason why is because, again, the All-Star game is in Philadelphia.
19:31That's why he's at 37%, and the only reason why he's at 37%, but you would have to assume,
19:38you know, no Aaron Judge.
19:40You would have to think to yourself which offensive players would choose to participate
19:45in the home run derby this year.
19:47We know Pete Alonzo wants to every year, but I don't know that he'll be back, but that
19:51would be an interesting name for me as well.
19:52But Caminero would seemingly be a lock for me.
19:55Right.
19:55I would say Caminero, Schwarber, since it's going to be in Philly, to your point with
20:00Mike Trout, he is from the Philly area.
20:03It also would just be like one last hurrah for him.
20:06You know, we know his health hasn't been there over the last few years.
20:08If he's healthy right now and has a chance to give us one more home run derby, I would
20:12say go for that.
20:13Obviously, his name has always been speculated about being traded to the Phillies, you know,
20:17over the course of the last few years, again, because he's from the area.
20:19But Schwarber, Caminero, again, I would like to see Murakami there if he's healthy and ready
20:24to go.
20:25But Trout is certainly an interesting option, given you all the storylines that we have
20:28going on.
20:30But didn't O'Neal Cruz do it last year, was it?
20:34And didn't fare out very well, I believe.
20:37He's about 30 cents right now trading.
20:40And Jordan Walker also having a pretty good season.
20:43That would be interesting also at about 30 cents here.
20:47So there are some guys, I think, that, you know, once other guys bow out, you know, some
20:52of those younger guys might absolutely step in here.
20:55But forget the hitters.
20:57I think these are two of the most fascinating markets that are still on the board here, Tom.
21:02The American League Cy Young, you and I have talked about this.
21:06We felt it was wide open last month.
21:10Schlittler's had a couple of rough outings.
21:13Dylan Cease, what a battle he just had.
21:16Jacob DeGrom, where are we looking here now for value in the Cy Young market?
21:21You know, that's a really good question.
21:24At this point, it's tough to say, given where the top of the board lies with Cease missing
21:29a little bit of time.
21:30He came back, like you said, he had a great outing versus the Phillies this past week.
21:34Schlittler hasn't been amazing.
21:35It really comes down to what happens this weekend with Terrick Scouble coming back for
21:39the Tigers.
21:40Because he pitched the other day.
21:41He had a rehab start.
21:42He looked good.
21:43We know the upside that Scouble can bring.
21:45If he's healthy and can string together old Scouble-type starts, he's going to be vaulted
21:50right back to the top of this leaderboard before we know it, especially with these other players
21:54faltering.
21:55I'm always concerned about DeGrom not being that he's not going to be good, just the volume
22:00that he'll have, where they may ease back on his innings.
22:02And we may just see other pitchers like Dylan Cease push past him in terms of total strikeouts,
22:07total innings pitch.
22:08And that will always be an argument for some people.
22:10So the top of the board is very interesting.
22:11I still have belief in Brian Wu just because I think the talent is there for him.
22:15I know it wasn't the best start for him yesterday, but I think he's an option we all should be
22:19considering as a much longer shot.
22:21Tom, the Cy Young Award market to me, and man, I hate to say this and throw this on there,
22:27but I mean, this is about health for me because I can't pick a winner between Christopher Sanchez
22:31and Jacob Mizorowski.
22:33So it's like whoever is healthy the entire season and makes every start, I think, wins
22:37the NL Cy Young.
22:38I liked Otani, you know, about a month ago, but it just does seem to me that they are still
22:43going to handle him a little bit more carefully.
22:45His numbers may be better than these guys just statistically at the end of the year,
22:49but the innings for Sanchez and Mizorowski piling up, I can't pick a winner here.
22:53No, I would say the same thing.
22:55And, you know, Otani did leave last night's game with knee inflammation.
22:58They said it's not serious, but I was always under the assumption that they would back off
23:02of Otani in terms of volume.
23:03And they said, oh, he's going to get a day off.
23:05He's not going to hit when he's pitching.
23:06Then he's going to have the next day off, et cetera, et cetera.
23:07So I was never on board with Otani winning the Cy Young.
23:10The MVP is obviously a different score, but between Miz and Sanchez, it's a coin flip at
23:14this point.
23:15And I have to say that it's one of those things you have to be ready for the schedule where
23:19if one
23:20has a bad outing and the next is going to pitch the next day, you want to be looking to
23:24buy
23:24in and out as the pitcher has a bad outing before that other pitcher has a good outing
23:29because the market's going to change so fluidly as they have good outings and bad outings on
23:33the day in and day out or week to week basis.
23:36Tom, enjoy all the baseball this weekend.
23:37Thanks again for coming on the early line.
23:40We'll catch up with you next week.
23:41Thanks again.
23:42Absolutely.
23:43Thanks for having me.
