00:00Let's go to some baseball here.
00:02The Mets joke of a season continues.
00:03They decide Kodai Senga's ready for the big leagues.
00:06He gives up five runs in the first inning,
00:08and the Reds are going for the sweep today, Joe, at 12.40 p.m. Eastern.
00:12I know the Mets are probably favored in this one,
00:14but why am I thinking that this is going the other way here today?
00:17Nick Lodolo will pitch.
00:19I know he hasn't been great for Cincinnati,
00:21but what's your confidence level, if at all, with the Mets?
00:25If you can't score, you can't win games,
00:27unless, of course, you've got a guy on the mound
00:29that can miss a lot of bats,
00:31and luckily for the Mets today, that's what McLean can do.
00:35So, you know, he's kind of had his ups and downs
00:37over the last month here,
00:39but the swing and miss potential is there.
00:42You've got a Reds team that strikes out a ton.
00:44If they're going to get a game, Greg,
00:46they are likely going to get this one,
00:49and I wouldn't go much past the five innings, though.
00:53I believe McLean outpitches Lodolo.
00:55I believe the Mets win the first five.
00:58Rays against the Dodgers today.
01:00It's a 3 p.m. Eastern game.
01:01This will be the marquee matchup in baseball
01:03with Shohei Ohtani as of now looking like he's going
01:07against Shane McClanahan.
01:09The Dodgers are minus 184, total seven and a half.
01:14So naturally, the big question is,
01:16how deep can Ohtani get?
01:17Remember the last time, Joe, that he pitched,
01:19he came out early and had a leg issue.
01:22So that's the diciness here,
01:25is knowing for sure what you're going to get today.
01:26I'm assuming they wouldn't throw him out there if he was 100%,
01:29but Ohtani kind of calls his own shots.
01:32He does.
01:33And by the way, this series has been phenomenal.
01:35Won nothing again last night.
01:37It was 4-3 the night before.
01:39And McClanahan, you know,
01:41certainly more than capable of limiting the Dodger lineup here.
01:45I like the under again here.
01:46I don't see a high-scoring series at all here,
01:50and certainly don't see one with these two on the mound.
01:52Hey, welcome back to the early line here on Sports Grid
01:55as we touch on some major league baseball.
01:57Thanks for waking up with us.
01:58It was a big night last night for the Seattle Mariners.
02:01In fact, they described it like opening day for Cal Raleigh,
02:04who missed basically a month, 33 days.
02:06It goes on the IL and delivers the game winner last night
02:10against the Orioles.
02:11Here is manager Dan Wilson on his star catcher returning.
02:18Big key, to be honest with you.
02:20You know, just having fun with the game again.
02:23And, you know, he's an exceptional player.
02:26We all know that.
02:27And I think, you know, he found the joy of the game,
02:30and that's what's important.
02:33And, you know, seeing him out there tonight, he was in his glory.
02:35He was, you know, right where it's his sweet spot,
02:38running the game, getting a big hit.
02:40That's Cal.
02:41And that was an impressive night for him.
02:44All right, so the Mariners get the win.
02:46The Milwaukee Brewers call up their young star, Cooper Pratt.
02:49He makes his debut last night, Joe.
02:51He went 0 for 3, so he didn't get a hit.
02:54But he did make his debut two and a half months
02:56after signing an eight-year, $50 million deal.
02:59He's going to play a lot of defense.
03:01He's going to play a lot of offense.
03:02Last night, he batted near the bottom of the lineup.
03:05But he has a lot of speed,
03:07and that's what the Brewers are looking for, Joe.
03:09They generally have led the league in stolen bases all season long.
03:12They play a little small ball.
03:14They don't hit a lot of home runs, so he'll fit right in.
03:17Yeah, he was a gold glover on a minor league level.
03:20So defensively, he is an absolute vacuum
03:24at maybe the most important position in the middle infield there, Craig.
03:28So they're still there.
03:30They're not expecting big things from him offensively,
03:33but defensively, he is more than Major League Baseball ready.
03:38And he'll play quite a bit because the Brewers are always looking
03:40for those edge players, those players that can help them.
03:43As you said, DRS, defensive run save.
03:45That's why he gets in the game.
03:47Cleveland Guardians make the official announcement yesterday
03:49that Jose Ramirez underwent surgery on his broken hamate bone.
03:53He's going to miss four to six weeks,
03:54and that's generally the timeline for a player like this.
03:57Does feel like there's a chance he could come back before the All-Star break,
04:01but knowing how teams operate, he's probably going to just be out through it,
04:04give him a chance to do some rehab in the minors, Joe,
04:07and then come back right after.
04:09But unfortunately, he probably will represent Cleveland,
04:12I would guess, in Philadelphia at the All-Star game,
04:13but he's not going to play.
04:16No, no.
04:17It's more important, certainly, later this year.
04:21They're in a division where if they can stay afloat
04:24while he gets to rehab, get him healthy, then get him back,
04:29because he is everything to that lineup and to that team.
04:32So let's see if they can stay afloat in the meantime.
04:35If they can, it should be an interesting second half
04:39of the baseball season for sure.
04:41Yep, that's right.
04:42Detroit and Kansas City, both with really bad first halves,
04:45which is basically keeping Cleveland right in the mix.
04:49Meanwhile, Aaron Boone, manager of the Yankees,
04:51backs his player, Jose Caballero.
04:53He's been backing his players for years.
04:55It doesn't matter what happens with Aaron Boone.
04:57He backs everybody.
04:58But Jose Caballero, in case you missed it, Joe,
05:01I don't know how closely you've been paying attention to this.
05:03What he's doing basically is, you know,
05:05stepping in the box and putting his head down
05:07and not looking up until he absolutely has to
05:09without a disengagement at eight second.
05:11And it's starting to get everybody upset.
05:14I mean, I guess it's within the rules so he can do it.
05:17But what has happened here now, Joe,
05:18is that he's made every umpire really pay attention to him.
05:21And if it gets down to seven seconds,
05:23now he's going to get a disengagement every single time.
05:27Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous.
05:29So the utility guy with the Yankees
05:31was the one to find the holes in the loopholes.
05:36And he's actually doing it now Major League Baseball
05:38and everyone's scrambling,
05:40trying to figure out how to stop.
05:41Come on, give me a break here.
05:44Kudos to him because he obviously found some way
05:47to get under everybody's skin here.
05:49And that's what a great utility guy often does, though.
05:53Yeah, a year ago, we were taught,
05:54well, a little bit more than a year ago,
05:56we were told torpedo bats were the next big thing.
05:59We haven't mentioned torpedo bats in 14 months.
06:03Anyway, the Yankees had them yesterday, I guess,
06:05because they destroyed the White Sox 12 to 2.
06:08Davis Martin, who's been fantastic for the White Sox, went down.
06:11He gave up three home runs and three and a third.
06:13He also gave up the first Yankee Stadium home run
06:16to Spencer Jones.
06:17Ben Rice went deep-sooted Paul Goldschmidt.
06:19They got bad news yesterday on Giancarlo Stanton.
06:21He's going to miss a few more weeks with an injury.
06:23He's got that hamstring issue that's going to keep him out.
06:26And by the way, Davis Martin had a 2.41 earned run average,
06:30and now it's 3.31 after yesterday's output.
06:33Let's hear from Spencer Jones.
06:35This is on his first home run in the Bronx.
06:44I think, you know, first time around is so much new experience,
06:48because you can visualize what the major leagues are going to be like,
06:51but until you're in there and you see it, you know,
06:54the expectation and reality don't always match up.
06:56And that first go at it was, you know, just a lot of new information,
06:59a lot of new things, different routines, that kind of thing.
07:01And then I think having a couple weeks just to meditate on the things that were
07:07going on from my first call-up and certain actions, I think,
07:11for me on the fields, certain routine things, certain mentalities,
07:15certain approaches to the game, I was able to really focus on.
07:18And, you know, know that next time I get an opportunity,
07:22that I'll make the most out of it.
07:23They also got a good pitching performance from Garrett Cole,
07:26who seemingly is all the way back now from his injury,
07:30missed, you know, more than a year.
07:31Here is Cole on picking up the victory against the White Sox.
07:35Overall, what did you think of your stuff tonight?
07:38I thought it was pretty good.
07:42I thought the command got a little bit better as the game went on.
07:48I thought we kept him off balance and stayed in the strike zone well
07:52after getting a lead and not too many mistakes
07:57and just kind of lost the zone on the walks in the last inning.
08:02In the offense, they're without some major bats in that offense
08:04and they're still finding ways to get it done.
08:07Just overall, what have you thought of this offense?
08:09I mean, it was obviously a great road trip.
08:13It's a good start to this homestand.
08:16They're putting a lot of pressure on the opponent
08:18with quality of bats up and down the lineup.
08:20They're using their individual strengths well,
08:28doing what they do well in the box, grinding out pitches,
08:32spoiling pitches, guys hitting for power, guys hitting behind runners.
08:36So it's dynamic in the sense that it can be deadly in a handful of different ways.
08:44And then the constant pressure has built up several times against the opposition
08:48where we've been able to score, you know, put up crooked numbers.
08:52The Yankees pitching has been great.
08:54Meanwhile, on the flip side, not much of a silver lining
08:57with the Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies last night.
09:00I mean, I kind of unfortunately saw this coming here the last couple of days.
09:03I did not see Philadelphia taking a seven to nothing lead in the third inning,
09:07which is what they had on starter Tyler Phillips.
09:09They end up winning this one, Joe, eight to two.
09:12Miami has been fantastic in the month of June,
09:15but this is like one of the tougher places to play in baseball.
09:19And I know Sandy Alcantara will pitch for them today,
09:21but that's like kind of the guy you have to have in games in Philadelphia,
09:25or these could end up being sideways.
09:27And that's what happened quick yesterday.
09:30And I have quick in game one, too.
09:32Same thing.
09:32I mean, it's very tough to play from behind in Philadelphia,
09:35and they kind of buried themselves early against Wheeler
09:40and, of course, against Lozada yesterday.
09:41So they have the right guy on the mound today with Sandy going up against Painter,
09:47the rookie.
09:47This could be an opportunity to get one back.
09:51All right.
09:51And finally, the New York Mets decided to call up Kodai Senga
09:56after his minor league sort of get-right stint.
09:59Here's how it went.
10:00First guy walked.
10:01Second guy walked.
10:02Third guy hit a home run.
10:03Three-nothing.
10:04Not good.
10:04Five-nothing initially.
10:06And they end up losing five to three.
10:07It feels like Carlos Mendoza is losing his mind a little bit.
10:10He got ejected during the game, and here he is.
10:13Carlos, what happened on the ejection?
10:16It was a quick one there.
10:17You know, somebody say something from the dugout,
10:19and Carlos just threw someone out.
10:23You know, nobody knew who he was,
10:24and that's when I jumped out of the dugout.
10:26And obviously, I wasn't pleased with the strike zone,
10:28especially with Benji at bat there.
10:32You know, went back and looked at some of the pitches,
10:35and I wasn't happy about it.
10:38Again, I understand that's a tough job there,
10:41but yeah, I was all to it.
10:43The Mets never seemingly got right, Joe.
10:46What's more surprising to you here in the middle of June,
10:48that the Mets are done or the Red Sox are done?
10:51What would have been more surprising to you
10:53at the beginning of the season?
10:55Well, the Mets, I think.
10:58I mean, because the Mets were true.
10:59The injury started piling up early in spring training,
11:02and then excuses.
11:05I think the Mets, I think the Red Sox,
11:07told us they were going to be a hot mess.
11:10And welcome back to the early line here on Sports Grid.
11:12Great to have you here with us.
11:13Joe Ranieri, of course, with me this morning,
11:15as well as Kevin Wall.
11:17She's getting ready for another action-packed day of soccer
11:20at the World Cup, first match today at 1 p.m. Eastern.
11:23But before we get to that, let's get to some afternoon baseball
11:25as Kevin joins us.
11:26And we'll start off with the two great series that we have going on,
11:29White Sox-Yankees, Rays, and Dodgers.
11:31Let's begin.
11:32Right now, Kevin, with the Yankees and White Sox.
11:35This is always dangerous when a team gets hot offensively,
11:37and it seems like that's what's going on here for the Yankees,
11:40even without Aaron Judge,
11:41and even without John Carlos Stanton.
11:43They managed to go deep several times yesterday,
11:46Spencer Jones, Ben Rice, and some others.
11:49And then you see the total reaction to the game today
11:51at 8 1⁄2 when the Yankees take on the White Sox today,
11:55but 12-2 yesterday.
11:57And so when a team like this starts to bat a little bit,
12:01and I know the Yankees are going to go through a stretch
12:03where they're not going to score,
12:04and everyone's going to want to fire the manager
12:05because that's what happens every year,
12:06and it'll happen this year too.
12:08But the total, as you see, is on the rise here, 8 1⁄2.
12:11Yeah, it may happen again.
12:12It may happen again.
12:13It always does with them.
12:14They don't hit the manager.
12:17Except he's not been fired at any point during, what,
12:20a decade run here?
12:21So Aaron Boone, excellent job security for Aaron Boone.
12:28Look, I would actually lean under on the 8 1⁄2
12:30with Rodon and Kay on the mound in this spot here.
12:34I think both guys probably do for solid performances in this spot.
12:38I do think that while the Yankees climbing back atop the AL East
12:43and then therefore the American League is noteworthy,
12:48the bigger story is just the White Sox stuff is still going on.
12:54This is a team who goes for consecutive series against the Dodgers and Yankees,
13:01and they took two out of three against L.A.
13:05If they just avoid the sweep against the Yankees,
13:10like, all of a sudden you go,
13:11oh, all right, we just played 500 baseball with the two league favorites.
13:15The White Sox making the playoffs,
13:18like, it gets realer and realer by the day.
13:23Didn't have that on the bingo card, I'm not going to lie.
13:25Thought they'd be better than they were a year ago,
13:27but did not have the White Sox competing.
13:30That whole division is just absolutely a hot mess here.
13:34A lot of people didn't have the Rays being as good as they are either,
13:37and I got to tell you,
13:38the first two games against the Dodgers delivered.
13:41I mean, these two teams are a lot closer, I think,
13:45than people realize,
13:46and won nothing last night, 4-3 the night before.
13:50Now you got the rubber match coming up here today.
13:52What are you thinking?
13:53Yeah, I feel like the start to this series is really a bookmaker's dream
13:58where all the Dodger run line bets in an attempt to get a good price
14:02don't come in,
14:03but the Rays money line tickets are also losers.
14:06And you wonder, with the total this low,
14:10does that trend continue here?
14:12The Otani starts have been under, under,
14:17it's been outrageous.
14:18And then, we had a 9-8 final in his most recent outing against Pittsburgh.
14:25They lost that game.
14:26It's hard for me not to think you work back towards an under,
14:30but the McClanahan previous two starts are interesting.
14:36He has given up four runs in each of his last two starts.
14:40He's now given up four earned runs in three of his last five starts here
14:46after being, I mean, looking, you know, like a Cy Young-ish type candidate
14:52through the early portions of this season here.
14:54So, is that early fatigue?
14:56Is it just some bad luck?
14:59You know, it's tricky to tell,
15:01but it's certainly something to watch here.
15:04It's why I think the Dodgers, of course,
15:06Otani being a part of it,
15:07but it's why I think they're closer to that minus 200 range,
15:11despite McClanahan being the opposing pitcher.
15:15You're very astute there, Kevin,
15:17because I saw McClanahan here in South Florida against the Marlins,
15:20and he looked very mortal and has since then.
15:22And this is going on now a couple of weeks,
15:24so we certainly will see.
15:26All right, let's take a look real quick, gentlemen,
15:28at the Cy Young race,
15:30which I think to me is the most compelling of any right now going.
15:34And it's very bizarre to me that I see these lines here.
15:37Now, Tommy, correct me if I'm wrong here,
15:40because I'm looking at this graphic here.
15:41Where is Otani on this graphic?
15:43He's got to be somewhere in the middle here.
15:46Okay, yeah, because we got Mizorowski at minus 165.
15:50Kevin, we have Christopher Sanchez.
15:53Otani is now 40 to 1.
15:55Yeah, yeah, so why is that the case?
15:57That's my point here.
15:58He dropped from 20 to 40 over the last week.
16:01Kevin, was that because of him coming out of the last game?
16:04Because he hasn't done anything to, I think,
16:06show that he should be any lower than sale here.
16:09Isn't that where my value is?
16:11And by the way, Kevin, let me add one more thing.
16:13This is a long season.
16:14I mean, who's to say that?
16:16I mean, Sanchez got blown up last time.
16:18Do we trust Miz throwing 105 miles an hour every time out?
16:21I still want Otani on my board.
16:25So, I think it's totally understandable to feel like Otani should have shorter odds.
16:30But what I think is specific to Otani is something, you know, Craig,
16:33obviously you and I for a while were talking baseball every day.
16:36Sure.
16:37And there was a point when I was like, man, maybe Otani can do this.
16:42And then it was following, you know, a really good start.
16:44I was like, he has no chance.
16:46The innings won't be there.
16:48That's right.
16:48Like, he's over 30 innings back of Christopher Sanchez.
16:5420 innings back of Mizorowski.
16:56But it's still early.
16:57Yeah, but the gap's not going to get shorter for Otani.
17:01He's not going to have these eight innings, nine innings.
17:04Well, I think, Craig, though, realistically, if we're going to say, hey, maybe every guy in front of Otani is
17:11going to get hurt.
17:12Well, then maybe Otani is going to get hurt.
17:13And we should really just be betting against him at the end of the game, Mark.
17:16I agree with that, too.
17:18But I guess my – look, I don't think Otani is going to win, okay?
17:22But what I do think is that it's very presumptuous to think that either – Sanchez has gone deep into
17:29games and he's pitched 180 innings or whatever he has.
17:32But every player on that list outside of Yamamoto has gotten hurt in the last year.
17:37Every single one of them.
17:38So why can't I just assume that maybe it's a prediction market bet, Kevin?
17:44Maybe that's really maybe where I should be leaning toward.
17:46But I still can't give that up.
17:48As far as him winning, no, I agree.
17:50Yeah, I wouldn't be betting Mizorowski at minus 165 because the track record isn't there of pitching as much as
17:58he's going to need to.
17:58I think the Sanchez bet is really, really appealing.
18:02But I do think that's just the Otani-specific thing.
18:06I'm just curious for Mizorowski, is he now in a situation where that 300-strikeout benchmark could almost be the
18:15clincher?
18:16Could be.
18:16It's just – it's not something that we've seen in recent years.
18:20It's, you know, the Scherzer sale, Kershaw.
18:23So it would be special if he can get it.
18:25Definitely so.
18:26Great stuff as always, Kevin.
18:27We'll see you later this afternoon on In Game Live.
18:29Thanks again.
18:30Time now for our best bets.
18:31Let's play a little bye, bye, bye.
18:34Bye.
18:34Bye.
18:36Bye.
18:39Joe, you like the Nationals today.
18:43I mean, who likes the Royals on the road?
18:46They're terrible.
18:47I'll take the Nats here, Moneyline, to get it done.
18:51Mine will be Brian Reynolds, 2+, at plus 1,000.
18:58I'm undefeated this week.
19:00So this would be time to fade me, probably.
19:02We'll be back with Prediction Markets Edge next.
19:06The Mets will take on the Reds today.
19:08And Kalshi is telling us that it's more or less a pick-em game, 54% on the Mets, 46
19:13% on the Reds.
19:15But, Joe, the Mets are going through it again here.
19:17They've lost two games in a row to the Cincinnati Reds.
19:20Their pitching can't get out of their own way.
19:22They probably have the better pitcher on the mound of the two.
19:25I don't know.
19:26I think you and I may see this game differently today.
19:28I think the Reds are going to sweep.
19:29Maybe you potentially like McClain on the mound.
19:32But I just don't know that it's going to matter.
19:35I like McClain early here.
19:38And, you know, the beautiful thing about the Kalshi markets is that, yes, if you're looking at just game markets,
19:44you can split the game in half.
19:46You can go to the first five.
19:47You can go to the full game.
19:49But I think McClain has got the edge over a team that strikes out a lot.
19:54He has had his ups and downs over the last month.
19:57But I think he's the better pitcher of the two.
20:00And, listen, the Mets, I don't think they're going to need a ton of runs early.
20:04I don't trust either bullpen.
20:05So, I would go McClain early here and likely look at his K-prop up and over as well.
20:12The Dodgers will take on the Rays as they finish off their series.
20:16And, certainly, this has been a fun, low-scoring, competitive one.
20:19Shohei Otani is expected to pitch for the Dodgers today.
20:22Last time he was out, he came out of the game early.
20:2662% on L.A. today on the Kalshi market.
20:30Rays 38%, Joe.
20:33Yeah, this has been a fun series, kind of flying under the radar.
20:38And, once again, unfortunately, all the value is going to be on Tampa.
20:42It's not going to be on the Dodgers.
20:44You're never going to find value on the Dodgers when Otani is on the mound here.
20:50But we have seen the money go together way early.
20:52Obviously, I tend to think maybe getting a run and a half might not be a bad idea here.
20:59Both games so far in the series have landed where one run separate them.
21:04I think maybe getting a run and a half with Tampa might not be a bad look here in this
21:09market.
21:10Several games this afternoon in Major League Baseball over on Kalshi Polymarket.
21:14And, of course, your sports betting operators as well.
