Could a MLB lockout really benefit the Tigers in a Tarik Skubal trade.
Transcript
00:01all right stoney could this actually play into the tiger's hands
00:07how does this help them with scoobal yes we're talking about the proposed the predicted lockout
00:16so if you're under the assumption that there's a possibility a strong possibility that 2027
00:25will not be played or it's going to be an abbreviated season whatever but let's say
00:30for argument's sake they lock it out for the season or if they lock it out for the season
00:37there are going to be teams are going to sit there and say wait a second we're not going to
00:41have
00:41baseball for two years for another season not till 2028 i can still get some revenue added to my
00:53coffers in 2026 so i'm a contender
01:01terek scoobal there we go hey here's the deal the offers go high because you're afraid you might
01:08not get another chance to kick the can back till 2028 players get older things like that you say a
01:15heightened urgency from the urgency from contenders to say this this may be it this is my chance
01:22so scott harris that's a huge if it does it the right way they should be able to get better
01:32prospects than you might think or whoever they're going to get i didn't connect the two dots because
01:36people may have seen the headlines the the owners want a hard cap the players have fought this for
01:40generations they have some asks that i think the owners probably feel are ludicrous they're at odds
01:46battle lines are being drawn nobody's optimistic does that help the tigers i hadn't connected the dots
01:52yet stoney but sure if they're going to eat the money if they're going to shop them as soon as
01:56they
01:56can and if they can play into the desperation make the most of a really bad situation right
02:02now here are some contenders according to john hayman who we always fondly call the scott boris
02:10mouthpiece he doesn't like it when you say for the new york too bad um he talks about how scoogle
02:17were that were the tigers quickly he says how quickly things could turn they rallied to make
02:22the playoffs in 2024 as we know after selling at the deadline but they've been as unlucky as anyone
02:26with six starters on the injured list also as unproductive as anyone they're four and 18
02:32since scoogle went out according to him uh the two-time defending cy young award winner has already thrown
02:39two encouraging bullpens and assuming he's back sometime in june following the early may
02:45nanoscope scoogle scope to remove loose bodies he'll become the deadline's absolute star he'll be the
02:54bell of the ball are very early favorites i'll do it from the bottom up i'll build build the drama
03:02yeah
03:02the braves atlanta never made the pitching deal we figured they needed okay do they need much
03:09they're right there well that's all the more reason to put them put them over the top the rays
03:15interesting they tried for otani freddie freeman and juan soto they came up short they can surprise
03:22you it would be a pure rental because there ain't no way they're paying him the brewers this prospect
03:29rich milwaukee club also has a chance to build a super rotation oh man yeah they really would have
03:35the avengers avengers wouldn't they yes the phillies dave dombrowski is mlb second most aggressive they
03:43could form a super playoff rotation with sanchez who hasn't given up a run in what like 40 innings
03:49or something and zach wheeler well who's second most aggressive gm who's more aggressive than dave
03:54dombrowski i'm sure he'll say that coming up i would assume but yeah i could see the phillies
03:58because they've been dancing around this for years i got an older veteran group right the harpers
04:02and schwarbers and we got to go we got to win uh the jays highly motivated and have as many
04:09rotation
04:10injuries as anyone uh tied with detroit and houston as far as that goes the yankees they have young
04:17arms to dangle and maybe their best championship chance in years although the rotation need seems low
04:23now right because now they got garrett cole back they have max freed they've got uh who's this young
04:28arm that was great in the postseason slitter yes very good i always worry i'm gonna screw up his name
04:32i know uh the dodgers it's unfair but they have more top 100 prospects than anyone seven they have
04:39seven top one yeah i mean um number two some execs believe teams will be unwilling to surrender
04:47prospects and low paid young stars as long as a salary cap is on the table and this may play
04:54into
04:54the hands of baseball's most aggressive executive here's your answer aj preller yes while they finally
05:01don't have a highly ranked prospect list they usually find them last year they gave up their number one
05:08prospect for mason miller mason miller and it's because he had control and he's a very very good
05:12back-end pitcher and number one your chicago cubs really they need an ace with kate horton out
05:20they have young players like alcantara uh baliesteros show and more the tigers are said to be even if
05:29they are short on prospect arms another plus tiger honcho scott harris knows cubs deal maker jed hoyer
05:37from harris's cubs days okay so scuba would get to be teammates with alex bregman
05:48of that group who stands out the most
05:53well i think the i think the brewers the brewers have a history now it's a long time ago
05:59but the cc sabathia they did the same thing they went out and he was great and got him to
06:04the playoffs
06:04they didn't go to the world series i don't believe and they obviously didn't win it but
06:09you know they've done it before and they do have a lot of from what i hear really good
06:13people in the farm system look the obvious is the dodgers yeah i mean look you said seven top 100
06:18prospects i i pulled it up and a lot of them are outfielders what have we complained about yes
06:23on outfield defense issues i mean package up one or two outfielders a couple an arm or two i mean
06:31you could put together a hall yeah they could put together a hall for terrick scuba and they'd
06:36actually have the delusions of we can keep them right like a lot of these other teams might go
06:40hey we're the brewers right ain't no way we're paying this guy there is a threshold that we have
06:45to be responsible and can't go over the dodgers don't have to be responsible right either does
06:49really toronto depending how much is money they want right and um the phillies they just don't care
06:54they don't care they're in a market there's a high demand market right i mean they gave look what they
06:59gave schwarber and he's delivering in home runs he still can't you know hit a hit for any average
07:07but i don't care with all the home runs he hits like i i get i'm not watching phillies baseball
07:11but
07:11they had an outfielder who was at the top of their prospect rankings for years this justin crawford guy
07:15center fielder he's not hitting well very good you wouldn't want him as a part of a trade good
07:21defensive outfielder yeah tool i'm not saying he could be a feature because he hasn't hit the ground
07:26running but i think they'd have to if they think they can sign scuba they'd have to give up uh
07:32andrew painter i think yeah that'd be a smart target but who know who the hell knows but yeah
07:38he's gonna get traded by buster only thinks the uh and his boy hembo thinks that the brewers are in
07:45the perfect position interesting yeah it's interesting that he put the cubs number one too that division
07:49might help us because everybody's kind of jockeying for position yes um it's it's the most competitive
07:55division in baseball but the bottom line is the fact is that with the impending lockout if there
08:02is one teams are more urgent i think to give up prospects who are going to have to either languish
08:08in the minors because there's going to be no if they don't believe there's going to be baseball next
08:11year i think that's sharp i think the brewers are pretty interesting team too that yeah do it with and
08:17they're very they're very uh desperate they've continued to fail what they got swept last year in nlcs didn't
08:24they wasn't that last year it was a year before one of the alonzo hit that home no no the
08:29dodgers
08:29i'm talking about the yeah they played the dodgers in the nlcs right okay uh and a team that is
08:35mid the
08:36small market that can really take a stab at a championship and not pay the price in the future
08:43classic rental i think the market is going to be better than people think that's why i think that's
08:48part of the reason i think the value is going to be there and then they won't get what they
08:53would
08:53have got if they traded them two years ago but i think they're going to get more than what people
08:56think because of the suitors that are out there and the brewers have the number one prospect in all
09:01of baseball yeah and i might be shooting for the moon here his name is jesus my day i believe
09:06yes
09:06bring jesus here for scoobal and we'll call it a day right someone on the texas what would you need
09:11to get back for for scoobal and i think jesus might be the answer yes no i honestly think you
09:17shoot
09:17for the moon here and see if if a team will bite like that that you know they they're trying
09:23to get
09:23over the hump with against the dodgers they're trying to move out in front super rotation is the
09:28way you beat the dodgers i would think yeah and i like i said they've done it before i don't
09:33know
09:33if the ownership was the same but with sabathia they haven't they have a precedent i mean they got
09:38him from what was cleveland right and then they and then he ended up signing with the yankees as a
09:42free agent and he was really good with milwaukee this is setting up how the when randy johnson got
09:48dealt from seattle yes like if the the it's a back and forth do you how long do you wait
09:55do you push
09:56it to the deadline and get all these guys competing against each other he's different because you have
10:00to see if he can pitch a couple yeah exactly you know i mean we're not going to do it
10:04right away
10:04he's got to start probably a month worth of games yes and look and casey mize that's why i was
10:11so
10:12upset that he got hurt the other day because his value if he comes back and pitches like he's
10:18been pitching even despite his little injury history they should be able to get something for him
10:25i think they could get something decent for carpenter too if he comes back and gets a little
10:29bit back to form that that lefty situational batter again a team with some postseason moments
10:35in his back pocket yeah exactly like he's the guy you don't have to trade because you have team
10:39control but that's why you get more for players like that uh when we ask what could you get for
10:44scoobal there's not a perfect comp but i've seen people floating around the idea of using um
10:47what luis castillo fetched the reds yes which he gutted um he gutted seattle's farm system when they
10:55made that deal right they got i think three of their top five prospects and another guy in there too
11:00yeah uh martin and martin was a shortstop they got arroyo andrew andrew more yeah i'm not saying
11:08these guys are world beaters but the idea is like if they were listed as a top product and that's
11:12which points the points it out that just because you're a top prospect doesn't mean you're going
11:15to be great it doesn't mean jack but i think if you're harris yeah whoever ends up being the most
11:20aggressive you start going grocery shopping going who's your number one your number three your number
11:25you really ask for the moon and you try to build this up but he can't be you know mr
11:30nitpicky and
11:31sit here and get burnt and end up with nothing it would be a disaster if that's a fire that's
11:37a
11:37fireable offense if you both miss the playoffs and then don't get something significant for tarik
11:42scoobal you you screwed up the best asset you've had that'd be a huge black eye 248-539-9797
11:51by the way yes you know how sometimes you put somebody put something in your head or even need
11:56you agree with it you just can't get out of it gov mentioned this yesterday off the air and i
12:01agree because i guessed who it was but yes every time brian winhorst is on esp and i think of
12:06our
12:06buddy paul sarah i can't get it out of my head jonah hill paul sarah brian winhorst more brian
12:17winhorst okay paul sarah has the brain of bob joe hill though he's pretty smart he's very sharp
12:24yeah all right you're not a michigander if we'll get to that at 8 35 it's another bronner's level
12:29revelation from me coming up next the lions best and worst of the offseason do you agree it's 97-1
12:34fun
12:35you
