18 May - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there. For a few days we've been advertising the prospect of warmer weather later this week
00:06and although at the moment it's less cold than it has been, well it's not exactly warm
00:11or indeed hot just yet with more unsettled weather arriving initially at the start of
00:18this week. A lot of showers across the UK during the rest of the afternoon. Some heavy
00:21and slow moving downpours across Scotland into the east of England, the Midlands as well
00:25in between some sunny spells but it'll turn cloudy across Northern Ireland, Wales and
00:30the southwest later on with the breeze freshening up. So although temperatures technically are
00:35a little higher especially in western parts compared with the last few days, it's not
00:41going to feel particularly pleasant. Although parts of East Wales, the West Midlands still
00:46managing to achieve 16 or 17 Celsius. Now the building cloud in the west, the
00:50freshening winds courtesy of this area of low pressure which will send weather fronts in
00:53from the Atlantic and more persistent and at times heavy spells of rain arriving overnight.
01:00It's during the evening that the wet weather reaches Northern Ireland, Wales, Western England
01:04and then the rain turns heavy by midnight in these same areas with a wind picking up as
01:09well. North East Scotland avoiding the rain through the night but increasingly cloudy and
01:16with wet and breezy weather elsewhere, well it's going to be a milder night compared with recent
01:21nights with many places staying in the double figures. Nevertheless, it is a wet and breezy
01:27start to Tuesday.
01:28The heavy and persistent rain shifts into Eastern England, Northern England, much of Scotland
01:34during the morning, again largely avoiding Shetland and Orkney until the afternoon. Wind picking
01:39up though.
01:40Elsewhere, the rain is replaced by frequent and heavy showers. Classic returning polar maritime
01:46air mass with these showers merging to give longer spells of rain in places. Gusty winds
01:51as well. But in between, there will be some sunshine and some warmth in the atmosphere with temperatures
01:59reaching 17 to 19 Celsius in some parts of the east. Although the showers will be slow moving,
02:06like I say, especially for eastern parts of Northern Ireland really getting their act together
02:09later in the afternoon through the evening and plenty of showers across the UK during
02:14Tuesday evening and no real let-up through the night.
02:19Another system moves in during Wednesday, another spell of rain for a time. But at this point,
02:25high pressure is building to the south and that high pressure is going to shift things
02:29as we go to Thursday and Friday, bringing warmer southerly winds in across the UK and really elevating
02:35the temperatures later this week. So just to give you a comparison with the average for
02:40May, this map shows that western area is still on the cool side on Wednesday. The orange colours
02:47to the east show that temperatures by this point are slightly above average with 20, 21 Celsius
02:52expected. But by Thursday, those temperatures are rising quickly with widely 22, 23 Celsius across
02:58central and eastern parts and most places above average at this point. But by the time we
03:04get to Friday, you can see how much hotter it is across eastern parts in particular with
03:10temperatures here reaching 28 Celsius. That's the most likely high as we end the week. And
03:17it stays very warm into the weekend as well. Not entirely dry through Friday and the weekend.
03:22There will be some showers around, but with high pressure nearby, it is going to be drier and warmer
03:28compared with recent days and indeed weeks. Make sure you're following us on YouTube so you never miss
03:34an update. Bye-bye.
