24 January - National morning forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there, good morning.
00:02There are two parts of the UK where we will continue to experience wet and windy weather
00:06during the start of this weekend, but in between, a slice of drier and indeed sunnier weather
00:12for many.
00:13The two areas I'm talking about, northeast and east Scotland, as well as the southwest
00:18of England, south and mid Wales.
00:21This low pressure continuing to throw gusty winds, spells of at times heavy rain into
00:26the southwest and south Wales.
00:28Some rain encroaching upon Northern Ireland associated with this as well.
00:32Eastern and northeastern Scotland continuing to see strong south-easterly winds, coastal
00:37gales, persistent rain and prolonged hill and mountain snow over the Grampians, above 400
00:42metres, risk of ice accretion and blizzard conditions.
00:46But elsewhere, actually, in between those two systems, reasonably dry and bright.
00:51Western Scotland, northern and northwest England, the Midlands, east Anglia in the southeast,
00:55seeing the best of any drier and sunnier weather.
00:59Temperatures a little above average in the south, 8 or 9 Celsius, closer to average further
01:03north and northeast, but feeling cold with that strong south-easterly breeze.
01:09Now, the rain will continue to be persistent in the east and northeast of Scotland, although
01:13it turns more showery overnight into the start of Sunday.
01:17Meanwhile, spells of rain in the southwest, as well as Wales, start to move into the Midlands,
01:22central southern England, northern Ireland, southwest Scotland.
01:25In between, a gap, some clear spells here and there, but enough of a breeze overnight to
01:30prevent a widespread frost or extensive fog.
01:34But it will be a gloomy start with a lot of low cloud in the east and northeast.
01:38Temperatures generally 4 or 5 Celsius first thing.
01:41More heavy rain to come for the southwest into south Wales as we start off Sunday.
01:46That continues to rotate around low pressure, which hasn't gone far, but it has filled.
01:51And with low pressure close to the southwest, as well as a brisk south-easterly breeze, we'll
01:56see colder air start to arrive.
01:59Not substantially colder, but still, it'll knock a degree or two off for parts of Scotland,
02:05northeast England, and it will feel cold in the wind as well as it switches a bit more
02:09to an easterly showers rather than longer spells of rain and hill snow.
02:14And generally a showery picture for many of us on Sunday with a lot of cloud in the sky.
02:19Seven or eight in the south, four to six in the north and northeast.
02:24We keep the cold air coming in across parts of northern UK, and that means that when another
02:30low turns up during Tuesday and into Wednesday, there'll be a clash with a lot of rain again
02:35in the south, but the potential for some especially hill snow towards the north.
02:41Annie has a full update on this feature of the weather, and you can find that on the Met
02:46Office YouTube channel.
02:47Bye-bye.
