00:00Good morning.
00:01Today is expected to be the hottest day ever recorded in May in the UK, so some exceptionally
00:07high temperatures over the next couple of days.
00:09Across the north-west of Scotland, though, it's a very different story.
00:11Here we do have much more in a way of cloud, and there will continue to be some bits and
00:15pieces of rain at times through the course of today, mainly for the islands, the Hebrides,
00:19the northern half of Highland, Orkney and Shetland.
00:21But for the vast majority of the UK, it's going to be a dry and sunny day once again,
00:26temperatures quickly lifting in that strong May sunshine, so by this afternoon, we'll
00:30see much higher temperatures compared to over the weekend, and the core of the heat will
00:34be a bit more widespread, so 30s, perhaps up into northern England, parts of Wales as well,
00:39and parts of the Midlands, the east of England, and particularly the southeast, will probably
00:43see temperatures nudging towards the mid-30s Celsius, so it's likely to be, as I say, record-breaking.
00:48The current UK highest temperature ever recorded in May is 32.8 degrees Celsius, but there's
00:55a chance that we could even see locally temperatures as high as 35 Celsius, so that's exceptionally
01:00hot even for mid-summer months, let alone in May.
01:03And it will also be a warmer day for parts of the north too.
01:07Northern Ireland and southern Scotland should see temperatures getting into the mid-20 Celsius
01:10here, so a pleasantly warm afternoon to come here.
01:14Now, you'll need to head to the beaches and the coastal regions if you want some respite
01:17from the heat.
01:18Here we'll have some sea breezes, giving a bit more of a refreshing feel to the weather.
01:22But do bear in mind that the sea is pretty chilly this time of the year if you are expecting
01:28to go for a dip.
01:29Now there's very strong sunshine as well, high levels of UV, and indeed pollen levels
01:34are on the climb as well as we go through the next few days.
01:36We're entering the grass and the weed pollen season, so if you are a hay fever sufferer
01:40and you haven't really had too many symptoms so far this year, then the next few days may
01:45be a bit troublesome for you.
01:48Now, as you go through this evening, if you've got plans for Bancrede Monday evening, the
01:51weather will be fine, sunny and very warm well on into the evening, and it will actually
01:56start to turn drier and clearer overnight across the north-west of Scotland as well.
01:59So, by the end of the night, it should be largely dry with some clear spells, temperatures
02:02falling away into potentially single figures in the Highlands, in the Glens, but in the south
02:07in particular it's going to be another warm night, potentially quite sticky and uncomfortable
02:12for sleeping, and temperatures may not fall below 19 or 20 degrees, especially in the
02:17more urban areas.
02:18If temperatures don't fall below 20 degrees, well that will be another record broken for
02:22May in the UK, and it's a term that we often refer to as a tropical night, something that's
02:27pretty exceptionally rare even in mid-summer months and unheard of in May.
02:32So it does mean that Tuesday will start on once again a sunny and very warm note across
02:36England and Wales, temperatures rapidly rising in that strong sunshine once again.
02:40But we could just see that heat spark one or two very, very isolated heavy showers or
02:45thunderstorms by the afternoon, particularly across parts of Wales, but most places will
02:49miss these, even if they do occur and stay entirely dry.
02:52A much sunnier, brighter day to come across the north-west of Scotland, a bit breezy, yes,
02:56but warmer than over the last few days, and many places will remain dry.
03:01A bit more in a way of cloud coming into north-eastern parts of England though, and that will certainly
03:04peg temperatures back much more so than over the last few days.
03:08So only highs into the high teens perhaps for some, and a bit breezier too.
03:13But in the south, well, temperatures once again into the low to mid-30s for some, particularly
03:18across the Midlands, central southern England and the southeast, and we could well be pushing
03:2235 degrees Celsius in one or two spots once again.
03:25So exceptionally hot for May.
03:27But as I just mentioned, parts of North Sea coastal regions, particularly northeast England,
03:32will see a much cooler day to come tomorrow compared to today.
03:35Temperature's perhaps up to 10 degrees lower than on bank holiday Monday.
03:40So a lot going on in the next few days, and the weather is set to stay fairly warm and
03:45settled as we go through the rest of the week.
03:46Just one or two isolated showers around, and if you're not a fan of the heat, well, it's
03:50good news because it won't be quite as hot in the south as we go from Wednesday onwards.
